HISTOLOGY: CONNECTIVE TISSUE
HW: PAGE 150
• Find a Group of 4 to help you complete the Analysis & Review Questions!
• Each person should do 5 Questions. Decide who is doing which questions.
• Print 4 copies of answers.
• Bring to class tomorrow!
CONNECTIVE TISSUE: BACKGROUND
• Most abundant type of tissue.• Epithelial tissue is more dense.• Made up of: cells, fibers, and extracellular
components• Structure allows support, yet is pliable.• Produced by fibroblasts.
EXAMPLES
• Blood• Bone• Cartilage• Tendons• Ligaments• Adipose (fat)• Lymph
EXTRACELLULAR PORTION OF CT
• Interstitial Fluid• Fluid that contains proteins and cells
• Adhesion proteins• Allow cells to bind to each other and to structural fibers.
• Proteoglycans• Proteins that act to filter fluids through the ground substance.
• Collagen• Extremely strong fibers that provide support
• Elastin• Fibers that are able to stretch and return to their original shape,
much like a rubber band.
• Reticular fibers• Fine networking fibers
CONNECTIVE TISSUE TYPES
FUNCTIONS OF CT
• Protect• Store Energy• Support• Transport• Insulate• Connect all body tissues
HIGHLY VASCULAR TO AVASCULARAvascular tissues made up of extracellular (non-living) matrices, or
substances, rather than cellular components
THREE TYPES OF CARTILAGE TISSUE
CT DISORDERS & DISEASE
• Collagen and Elastin most common components affected.• May become injured through trauma (sprain)• Or genetic or environmental factors cause
problems.• Own Immune system may cause inflammation.
SYMPTOMS
• Fatigue• Fever• Muscle Pain• Stiffness• Weakness• Joint pain
CONNECTIVE TISSUE DISORDERS & DISEASE
CONNECTIVE TISSUE LAB
• Using the charts/PPT complete pg. 141-145.• Record the description, function, and location in
the chart.• Draw and label an example in the right column
for each picture.• Example seen in Figure 1.• No talking.• You will have • 3-4 minutes Per slide.
