“I definitely find I am more drawn to valley-bottom than moor-top”
Since relocating to the Bere peninsula last year my partner Ysella and I have
been building our design business, Tungsten Design. Things are coming along
nicely and we are very pleased to be working with several new clients, including
Tamar Trails centre at Gulworthy and the UK’s leading constructor of outdoor
adventure courses, based in Dorset. In this transitional period it has not been
easy to maintain momentum on my art, but I have been keeping sharp
(sometimes) and getting frustrated (often) by attending life drawing every week
in Tavistock.
I am loving the process of tuning-in to our new surroundings and the landscape
here offers different stimuli to that of wooded Surrey. We are set between rivers
Tamar and Tavy and the light and movement are both serene and exciting. I
have managed some quality time with my camera and made some images which
I hope pleasingly reflect the varying moods of the rivers. I definitely find I am
more drawn to
valley-bottom
than moor-top
– I guess you
can take the
boy out of
Friday Street
but it is harder
to take the
Friday Street
out of the boy.
FEATURED ARTIST: GLEN PADGHAM
For as long as I can remember I have considered myself someone who draws.
There is something about the simplicity and rigour of pencil and paper that is
both instantly accessible and endlessly challenging; there will never be enough
time to resolve those two but I will always have fun trying.
I lived until May 2016 in a spot called the Surrey Hills, near Dorking. My father
still lives in the same tied cottage in which he was born in a twelve-house
hamlet called Friday Street, and this somewhat remote wooded valley setting
continues to have a large influence on me and my way of seeing.
I never had the opportunity to go to art school and instead went into graphic
design via a City & Guilds course at Guildford College. Design is an absorbing,
challenging and rewarding business and it has kept me thinking laterally and
creatively for over 30 years so far. In tandem I try to keep working all the time
on the practice of drawing which, as many will agree, is really the practice of
looking and seeing… to this end I often substitute camera for pencil when
making images.
WHAT IS THE BEST WORK RELATED THING YOU HAVE DONE RECENTLY?
Getting to Grenofen before dawn with camera and tripod.

ASK THE ARTIST
Where is your favourite
place?
The path along the River
Walkham from Grenofen to
Double Waters takes some
beating.
What is your worst habit?
Overthinking.
What irritates you?
Under thinking.
Top 2 dinner party guests?
Flann O’Brien, and the
grandfather I never met,
Nelson Padgham.
Which super-power would
you most like to have?
Who wouldn’t want to be able
to fly?
What is your favourite
motto?
One that I can only aspire to:
Have a good time, all the time.

Tungsten Design is owned and run by Drawn to the Valley member Glen Padgham and partner Ysella Sims. We have relocated to the beautiful Tamar Valley from Surrey and have nearly thirty years’ experience in effective design and communication. Our clients range from large corporates to enthusiastic start-ups – currently we are working on projects for; the leading constructor of outdoor adventure courses in the UK, a chain of indoor climbing centres, an award winning hair and beauty salon, a venue for family outdoor adventure, and more besides.
We are committed to providing a thoughtful, bespoke design service and we like to think that our results derive from doing things with integrity, our way. Here is an ABC of design, the Tungsten way:
A: Initial brief and review
We look before we leap; nothing is taken at face value. We ask questions and build confidence by listening carefully, then we do our homework and make sure we are well-informed. We take a step back and expand on the initial premise, then we focus on the fine stuff and try and properly see – details can be crucial.
B: Finding our focus
Clear communication starts with clear choices, wisely made. If there is one strategy above all others that we rely on, it is to adopt different perspectives. Viewpoint changes everything, so we put ourselves in different positions to see what happens. Choosing where to place emphasis, and finding the places to push, enables us to strip away any distractions. When we work in a well-chosen direction we can be creative and confident.
C: Great design is honest and open
We test ourselves so we don’t get attached too soon, and then we share – when we deliver our ideas we are prepared to explain ourselves. We believe this is how we produce original work which delivers – the end result should communicate in a clear and unique way.
We hope that another key point of difference with our design service is the breadth of capability in a small two-person company. We take responsibility for the entire process; from research and broad concepts, through content creation, design visuals, testing, presentation, and then to eventual oversight of final production. We are as tenacious about seeing the job through to completion as we are rigorous about the initial stages. www.tungstendesign.co.uk 01822 841156
