Lead the Way >>>

As rightly said - “Leaders are made, not born” and made more

by themselves than by any external means. The truth is that

most people have the potential to become effective leaders;

however, the only issue is leadership takes time to develop.

I am no Born Leader, but having got an opportunity to lead a

Group of 69 people – each being Leader in his own Profession

or Vocation, it gives me confidence to lead the club.

When I was asked to be the President a couple of years back, I

was fortunate to have Siddha sitting beside me who readily

agreed to be the Secretary and here we are to LEAD THE WAY.

We set about thinking how to do different things, rather how

we can do the same differently. The first glimpse being the

Installation ceremony organized with the wholehearted support

of all the members and their families. We were blessed by the

gracious presence of Shri Nana Patekar as Chief Guest who

also consented to be the Honorary Member of our club, The

New look Directory, Personalized Calendar for each Member,

Theme Song for the Club and the making of Promo videos ably

sums up that planning and hard work is always appreciated.

July was satisfying and a good beginning, besides our regular

events, we got an opportunity to showcase our theme song

and promo videos for the District Governor’s installation at

Dharwad. The district audience, PDGs, invitees were

mesmerized at the well conveyed message and we received

lot of admiration for the wonderful Public Relation work. There

were request for the song and videos from many, including

from Past RI President Rtn. Kalyan Banerjee to showcase it at

the national and international level.

Involvement of Rotarians and our families would be the key to

our success during the course of the year. Celebration of a

Happy Occasion with the Under-privileged, Special children,

Orphanage and Old age home by our members is one such

initiative, and we are happy with the good response from our

members. We have been able to infuse greater enthusiasm

into our Interact Club and we are planning many events for the

Interactors with the help of our Co-coordinator Ann Sangita

Sriram.

We plan to have family meetings every month at different

locations, This month on 17th August we would be visiting

Ganapati Shala to witness the making of the idol and also a

visit to Sesa Football Academy and Butterfly garden at a

reclaimed Mine site, Sankhali. Our Effort would be to follow

the calendar we have worked out in detail and presented to all

members to sync with your plans.

During the last 16 years, our club has been doing yeomen

service to the community. Collectively, we can serve the

community much better than individually and spread our

message “Rotary club of Panaji Mid-Town – Spreading smiles

all around”

Rotary is changing, the emphasis is on long-term measurable

and sustainable projects, our intent is not to do too many

projects for the sake of it, but do projects that are sustainable

and create an impact on the community. Our disability

corrective surgery is one such project that has given us

immense satisfaction seeing the children treated by us, pursue

their studies and some even gainfully employed, Our

Educational Grants Program has transformed lives by

employment of youth from economically backward community

including professions such as Doctors and Engineers. We are

working toward setting up of Home care nursing school with a

Global Grant from Rotary International under Economic and

Community Development one of the six focus areas of Rotary.

We summed up July with an overseas Trip, Our first BOD of

the year with participation of 27 Rotarians, setting up the mood

for the rest of the year to “LIGHT UP ROTARY”

<<< A Time for Action

Whether it is a high profile company, an

established conglomerate or a local club,

everybody has a hard time keeping their

best and brightest to stay. We often have

those amazing members who volunteer a

majority of their time towards club

activities and have invested a lot of their

time and energy towards the success of

the club. These members join various

committees, become executives and

handle anything from menial to the most

complex tasks. As a result, they become

important to the club and to the

members. Sometimes, a simple

acknowledgement isn't enough and it

becomes difficult to retain members.

However, in order to retain members, we

have to understand why members

choose to leave in the first place.

Lack of Open-Mindedness: Everyone

wants to be heard and have their ideas

acknowledged. When members begin to

feel that the decision makers of the club

often waive their ideas aside in order to

follow through with an already set

strategy, they begin to feel undervalued.

As such, they slowly begin to lose

interest in the club and its activities. As a

solution, always try and incorporate the

best parts of their suggestions. New

suggestions can only improve your

current strategy and help you achieve

your goals.

Vision/Mission: Look at your club's

current mission statement. What is your

club's vision for the future? Is it exciting?

Is it sometimes your members proud to

share? Do all members even know what

it is? A mission statement really defines

what your club is about and your vision

defines the future of your club. Who

came up with the mission statement and

the vision? Chances are, when your club

members choose what it is, they want to

achieve as a club, they'll work towards

making it a success because they all

believe in it.

Exciting Tasks & Projects: When we

look at the business world, there are

hardly any companies that have people

follow up with employees asking if they

are enjoying their current project or

whether they are interested in another

project or task. Essentially, these are

'nice-to-have' conversations but hardly

ever take place, once a year at best

during performance reviews. Similarly,

this is something that should be

implemented by clubs. A simple

question like this can make members

feel very appreciated and looked after.

Everybody is driven by the opportunity to

excel and participate in something big,

which will make an impact on their

company, life or even club. Why not

implement an annual 'check-in' for

members to see how their membership

is going and what can be done to

improve their experience?

Team Dynamic: Does everyone in your

club get along with one another? How s

your team dynamic? When everyone

gets along and are on friendly terms with

one another, you can be sure that they

look forward to club meetings and

events because they enjoy each other's

company. If there is a bad seed that

causes friction with more than one

member, deal with them! You may think

that they do so much for the club and

you would hate to lose them, but think

about how many members you turn off

by letting them get

away with bad

behaviour. Ensure

your team dynamic

is strong. To do so,

plan events that

revolve around

building your team

dynamic and find

ways to allow

members other than the usual leaders

play a role. After all, a strong team

ensures success!

Trust & Shifting Priorities: When

members promise to fulfil a goal or have

a task completed, trust that they will

deliver on their promise. You've got to

give them enough time to complete the

task at hand, instead of reassigning it to

someone else. For example, if you've

issued a challenge to a group of

members to raise fund and collect a

certain amount of money by a certain

date, believe they will do so. If you see

that they won't reach their goal by the

set date, offer them advice and help

rather than enlisting another group to

complete the task. If members feel like

their club supports their initiatives, they'll

attempt to do more for the club, and

otherwise, the impression that is left on

them is that the club isn't interested in

their efforts at all.

Authority: Although you cannot exactly

'tell' your club members what to do and

how to participate, the board can still

outline club expectations from all

members. Anyone who is part of an

organization, knows there are guidelines

to follow and will appreciate suggestions

and observations made on becoming

active members.

Everyone wants to feel valued. When

people join clubs or an organization, they

do so to be part of something and

contribute towards something. When

they feel that their participation or efforts

are not acknowledged, they begin to feel

as though the organization they want to

be part of doesn't appreciate them. As a

result, they feel that leaving the club

would be a better option.

Warm Greetings.

The installation ceremony of Rtn. Milind Sankhwalkar and his team for the year 2014-15 was a trend setter for more reasons that one. "Lai Bhari" would be apt for and thinking out of the box. Compering by annettes in sync with the power point of Bollywood extravaganza.

Presentation of team with little annettes leading them to the stage (football culture) was refreshing. Speeches were crisp and short & more importantly there was warmth in the reception accorded to guests & visitors reflecting the true Rotary fellowship traditions.

Further you showed that Rotary can mould its members to become directors, producers and actors with the production of the two short stories of service caught on camera by your own Rotarian.

All in all a good beginning for an enthusiastic year of continued Rotary service benefiting the community.

All the Best.

Dev Borem Korun. Mog Asundi.

-Rtn Gurudatta D. BhaktaDG 2009/10

It was a delight to attend the Installation Ceremony.

The significant, meaningful social service performed

by your club was well documented and what's more

it was interestingly screened.

The youthfulness was evident in all the movements.

Participation by family members gave it a sense of

togetherness.

No doubt, the cherry on the cake was none other

than NANA.

His words are relevant to the Indian Rotary

movement.

I was happy to be present and lucky to have found

the time to do so.

Wishing you and your team an exciting , glorious

year ahead.........the test

was yesterday

Rotary Theme 2014-15

RI President Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up Rotary as his theme

for 2014-15. Huang was inspired by the teachings of Chinese

philosopher Confucius who said : “It is better to light a single

candle, than to sit and curse the darkness.” He called Confucius

as the world's first Rotarian because even though he died 2,500

years before Rotary was founded, his ideas were very

much Rotary ideas: values of service and

responsibility, of respect for family and to others.

Huang said, “I think that one line sums up the way we

in Rotary approach the problems of the world. There is

so much difficulty. There are so many people who

need help. Many people look at this and say, 'There is

nothing I can do'. So they do nothing – and nothing

changes. But this is not the Rotary way. The Rotary

way is to light a candle. I light one candle, you light one candle –

and so do 1.2 million other Rotarians. Together we can do so

much more than we could ever do alone. Together, we can light

up the world.

In 2014-15, I am asking each one of you to light your own Rotary

candle – and Light Up Rotary together. There are many ways to

R. I. PRESIDENT – Rtn GARY C. K. HUANG

He was born in Southern China and grew up in Taiwan. He is a graduate of Eastern

Michigan University, USA and holds an MBA from the College of Insurance (New

York).

He is currently Honorary Chairman of Taiwan Sok Shinkong Security Co., Ltd and is a

past president of Malayan Overseas Insurance Co.

He has been awarded the National Civic Service Award by the Federation of Non-

Profit Association and the Outstanding Community Service award by the Ministry of

Interior, R.O.C. in 2001. In 2001, he was named “Honorary Mayor” by the City of San

Antonio during Rotary's Convention.

A Rotarian since 1976, Gary is a member of the Rotary Club of Taipei, Taiwan. He

has served RI as district governor, director and vice president, Trustee of The Rotary

Foundation, and as chairman and member of numerous international committees

and task forces.

Gary has been instrumental in the area of membership development throughout

Asia. As a Rotary Foundation Trustee, he set the goal of recruiting 100 new Foundation Major donors in Taiwan to help celebrate

Rotary's centennial, which resulted in 106 Major Donors in 2005 and another 103 Major Donors in 2006 contributing more than

US$2 million to the Foundation's Annual Programs Fund.

Gary has recounted his experience in business and his life within

Rotary in a 2004 book entitled 'Finding Solutions, Not Excuses.'

He is the recipient of the RI Presidential Citation and the Service

above Self Award, Rotary's highest honour. He has also received

the Rotary Foundation's Citation for Meritorious Service and

Distinguished Service Award. Gary and his wife Corinna have one

son and two daughters. They are all Major Donors to The Rotary

Foundation.

Light Up Rotary. I hope many of you will choose to host a Rotary

Day, to show your community what Rotary is and what we can do.

I hope you will involve your Rotaract and Interact clubs in your

service, to bring the new generation of the Rotary family closer to

Rotary membership.

And I hope you will keep Rotary strong by inviting new

members into Rotary including your own spouse and

family.

Perhaps the most important thing we can do to Light

Up Rotary is to finish the job we've been working on

for more than a quarter of a century: the eradication of

polio. We are so close to our goal, but we will get there

only if we keep up the fight, keep up the momentum,

and close the funding gap for the polio end game plan.

Light Up Rotary is our theme for this year but it is more than just a

theme. It is how we in Rotary see the world and our role in it. We

believe that no one should sit alone in the darkness. Instead, we

can come together, all 1.2 million of us, to Light Up Rotary. This is

our goal and my challenge to you.”

JULY 2014 THE dream |07|

Rotary Club of Panaji Mid-Town has always been promoting

education especially among the students from the

economically challenged background.

Initially it started in the year 2000 with adoption of 4 children

from slum areas and providing them with uniforms, books,

shoes, nutrition allowance. Gradually the number increased

with adoption of village children from Union High School,

Chimbel, Ideal High School, Taleigao and Dayanand Arya High

School, Neura. Annually around 300-350 students from primary,

middle school and high school benefitted. Simultaneously,

benches, computers, water filters, .laboratory and library

facilities were provided to these schools.

Gradually the scope of funding was raised for the higher and

professional education. The club adopted students pursuing

engineering, medicine, BBA and BCA courses. The fees and

provision of books and conveyance allowance was provided to

8 engineering and 6 medical students. These were the

meritorious students who could not afford higher education

due to financial crunch.

One such student was Sandeep Raja. His father worked in a

restaurant and has 2 more siblings. We adopted this boy. He

was very hard working and studious and passed all his

semesters with first class and distinction. Our educational

Grants committee used to keep a close watch on these

students. After finishing his graduation, he wanted to do his

masters from Edinburgh, Scotland. He was given guidance to

avail of the loans from the bank and proceeded to UK. He

finished his Masters and got a job in a MNC and presently is

occupying a very high post. He supported his younger siblings

for higher education and bought a flat for his family in India.

At the installation ceremony of our club on 1st July 2014,

Sandeep's father presented a cheque sent by Sandeep of Rs

100,000 to Rotary Club of Panaji MidTown Charitable trust to

support the education of needy students like him.

This is a great success story of our club wherein we have

brought smiles to a family and helping them to rise in the

society and lead a respectable and humble life.

“Service is the rent we pay to be living. It is the very purpose of life and not something you do in your spare time.”

Club Secretary Rtn. Siddha Sardessai audits the rent we have been paying in the month of July 2014.

It was on 30 July 2010, at Amari Atrium in

Bangkok during the fellowship post first

overseas BoD meeting of “My Year

Gaurish” that Milind offered to take over as

the President for 2014-15. I was seated

next to him and I offered to take up

position as Secretary.

On 23 February 2012, Milind and I had our

first “official” meeting in Goenchin to

discuss the focus areas and what we

should strive for during “our year”.

“Togetherness” was to be the focus and

it's a very important ingredient to Rotary

life.

Our first interaction with the DG was on 23

June 2013 at Rotary Milan, followed by

pre-Pets & Sets “Samskara”. “Diksuchi”

(Pets Sets) at Mahabaleshwar and

“Deepan” (District Assembly) at Belgaum

gave us a lot of learning. Finally, the stage

was set to take over as Secretary of the

prestigious Rotary Club of Panaji Mid-Town.

Time for all back stage work to be

showcased on stage.

Ist July saw the grand Installation

Ceremony held at Taleigao Community

Centre. This Event showcased a host of

Public Relations measures that the Club

has initiated. But what captivated all was

the participation of the family of Rotary in

the various facets of the organization. In all

43 members of the Rotary family engaged

themselves in the event proceedings.

A project gallery at the entrance of the

venue displayed the works of the Club

through the last 16 years. The venue was

setup a la RCPMT style. A huge 15 ft x 10

ft LED wall as the backdrop to the stage

left its impact. Theme boxes on each table,

Wall of Flags, and the hanging flags added

those little details to bring out the

ambience of a Classy Rotary gathering.

The event began with the family of RCPMT

singing the “swagatham”- a welcome

song. Annets - Rhea Mallya, Vansika Shah,

Rakshanda Khaunte, Ved Sardesai, Krish

Verlekar, Yashodhan Dhume; Anns-

Ranjana Ashok, Swati Shetye, Minal Kamat,

Swati Shirodkar & Rotarians Manohar

Kamat, Ashok Menon, Vinaykumar Pai

Raikar and Siddha Sardessai participated in

the singing whereas Vidisha Patil, Nimisha

Patil, Niketa Lawande and Trisha

Shankhwalker put up a dance sequel to the

welcome song.

Shri Nana Patekar was invited to be the

Chief Guest for the evening. He was also

conferred as the Honorary Member and

now being a Rotarian himself, the Board

had the privilege of getting themselves

pinned by the superstar of Indian cinema.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, Shri Nana

Patekar enlightened the gathering on the

true values one needs to follow. He

emphasized that giving back to Society is

as much a part of living for oneself.

Shri Srinivas Dempo was re-conferred the

Honorary Membership. And Kedar Kenkre

was inducted in the Club under the

classification- Chartered Accountant

Corporate Audit.

The presentation of the Board was made in

truly filmy style with each board adorning a

Bollywood character on screen. This

created a lot of enthusiasm in the crowd.

I N S T A L L A T I O N

The show was anchored by Mohit Caculo and Urvi Shankhwalker in an impeccable

style. Another seven of our Annets – Vedant Dhume, Aishwarya Menon, Neel Lawande,

Anshula Menon, Shamik Caculo, Mayura Ashok and Nrutika Shah were a part of the

compere team and introduction of the board was handled by them. Escorting each

board member to the dais were our little annets – Siddhi Desai, Ananya Verlekar and

Samah Sardessai whereas Annets – Vansika Shah, Khushi Palan, Simran Nadkarni and

Niketa Lawande helped with the trays. Annets – Anushka Adwalpalkar, Mihika Mehta,

Tanish Sawkar and Rahul Chandrashekar manned our Reception counters. And help for

the coordination came in from Swati Shetye, Ranjana Ashok, Supriya Shankhwalker and

Sweta Sardessai. Wow!!! That's an exhaustive list of participants indeed.

The flowers that were given to the guests on dais and to visiting dignitaries were specially made

by the children of Disha Special School. Our little way of helping one of our supported schools.

Membership Directory was released at the hands of AG Rtn Rajesh Salgaonkar. The new format of

the Directory has inclusion of family photo of each member. Mobile app “Roster-On-Wheels” was

also launched on this day. This app has a lot of applications and will be extremely useful and

handy to every member.

Rtn Manoj Caculo gave the

Vote of Thanks. Acclaimed

as the best Installation

ceremony in Rotary circles

and addressed as Grammy

Awards by some, I would

want to thank all of those

who came in for rehearsals

for almost 2 weeks. Your

immense support and

encouragement is

heartening. Thanks also to

those helping hands and

vendors who helped us put

up this show.

Rtn Milind informed the gathering about the new initiatives the

Club intends to take in accordance with the RI theme "Light up

Rotary". He also threw light on the success stories of the Club and

reiterated his endeavor to work selflessly for the community.

Earlier outgoing President Rtn Bhupesh Shah acknowledged the

donors and thanked everyone for the support during his tenure

while outgoing Secretary Rtn Sunil Mone presented the report of

activities undertaken during 2013-14.

01 July 2014 - Handover of

Computers to Disha Special School.

At the start of the new Rotary year, we

took our first steps in community service

by handing over computers to the Disha

Special School. Thanks to IPP Rtn Bhupesh

Shah for his kind gesture in arranging this

project.

04 July 2014 – Handover of Cloth

material for Night gowns for inmates of

Matruchaya

We handed over 60 mts of cloth material to

Sandeep Naik for the purpose of night

gowns for the inmates of Matruchaya. This

material will be given to Self help group

working with Matruchaya for stitching the

same and will benefit the self help group

also with the workload offered. This

project was co-ordinated by Rtn Santosh

Shetye.

The Installation Ceremony of the

INTERACT CLUB of the “Our Lady of The

Rosary High School” at Dona Paula was

held on 15th July 2014 at School Premises.

Miss Sian Rodrigues was inducted as the

President, Veda Desai as the Secretary and

Resha Banaulikar as the Treasurer. Along

with 48 other members, this Interact Club

is all geared up to

take up the social

responsibilities

along the ideals of

Rotary. Ann

Sangeeta Sriram has

kindly consented to

be the co-ordinator

for the Interact Club.

15 July 2014 – Happy Occasion

with the less fortunate

When one experiences the joy of giving, he

will come forward with newer ideas. This

has been the underlying thought of this

project. “Happy Occasion with the less

fortunate” project aims at enriching oneself

with the joy of giving. We requested

members to celebrate at least one of their

happy occasions in family like birthdays

and anniversary with schools around

Panaji. And we have received a very good

response. The first of this project was

celebrating Ann Anitha Menon's birthday at

the National Association for the blind at

Santacruz. Anitha hosted lunch to the blind

students and derived happiness seeing the

children relish on the lunch and sing to her

the birthday song. She said later that “this

has been a very different and a really very

satisfying birthday”

05 July 2014 – Tree Plantation

10 of our youngest annets planted saplings

along the Merces road as a part of our Tree

Plantation drive. The tree guard carried the

name of the Annet and read as “This tree

planted by (Annet name)”. This gesture is

bound to bring in a sense of belonging to

the environment for our future generation.

Arushi Kenkre, Sayee and Siddhi Desai,

Vaishnavi Dempo, Samah Sardessai, Roma

Kapadia, Jia Chandan, Kaya and Manas

Kholkar, Ananya and Krish Verlekar

participated in the Project. We also

felicitated Rtn Andrew D'Souza at the

hands of Rtn Manoj Caculo for his support

in this drive for all these years.

15 July 2014 – Installation

of Interact Club

23 – 28 July 2014 – First BoD

Meeting (Overseas)

The Board and other members of the Club

set off to Bangkok and Pattaya for the First

Board of Directors Meeting. An

overwhelming response to this trip saw 27

members of the Club join together for a

wonderful trip that brought everyone

closer to each other.

PROMO VIDEOS

The first promo is on the community

service projects. A story about an elderly

mother estranged by her own son. She

recalls her moments with her son when he

was a young boy and looks at how he

changed over the years. Rotary supported

old age home welcomes her and brings

back a smile on her face.

We also launched 3 promo videos based on our Club Projects:

The second promo is on our education

grants project. A girl student who is

excellent in her studies and scores high

marks in her exams feels the brunt of

education when she realizes that the fees

for higher education are beyond their

means. Once again, with help from Rotary,

she graduates with a degree in hand.

The third is on our disability

corrective surgery project. A polio disabled

child is depressed seeing his friends play

football while he is left to himself. And with

Rotary's intervention, after undergoing

corrective surgery, he goes on to play his

heart out and achieves his goal.

promo

I would like to thank our main cast, Anagha Deshpande for her role in the promo on community service, Prerna Palekar for the promo

on education grants project and Saish Mahale for the promo on disability corrective surgery. Thanks also to Tushar Kamat for

arranging music and recording voices of Dr Vinaykumar Pai Raikar and myself for this video, and to Manu Anand for his voice over.

Special thanks to Madhavi Bhobe for her lyrics and for being my assistant director. And to Sweta who's been the most able hand in

arranging everything behind the scenes. And all this would not have been possible without the support of Milind and all the side-cast &

crew and those helping hands who tirelessly worked with us to bring to life a crazy little thought that sprang in my head while driving.

|14| THE dream JULY 2014

There are many age old

occupations in Goa

namely, toddy tapper

(render), coconut plucker

(paadeli), street cobbler,

cane chair weaver, chari

(blacksmith), shimpi (tailor) ,

farmer, raandpi (cook), umbrella repairer

and so on. One of the significant occupation is that of Goan

Baker or commonly called as Poder , coined after the

Portuguese word Padeiro.

There is a saying in Goa which says : “Paakhle gele aani unde

gele”. This in literal sense means that after the Portuguese

(Paakhle) left Goa, even the quality of bread (unde) has

deteriorated. The Portuguese brought to Goa various plants

and fruits like jackfruit, guavas, chillies, mangoes, coffee and

so on. They also gave the art of making the traditional Goan

bread.

This Goan bread is in the form of square bread (paav) coming

in loaves or the in individual variety. These may be shaped

round with small cut at the centre or like a figure of eight. The

bread made from the whole wheat was called as polee and is

very popular amongst the diabetic patients.

There is a huge oven (called as khorn in Konkani) with the base

hollow wherein the wood preferably from tamarind or borum

(zizyphus zuzuba) which gives more heat and burns over a long

time. The dough is made from the wheat flour (maida) and in

the past the poders used to use toddy for fermentation in

place of yeast. After the initial process, the dough was shaped

in various sizes depending on the demand in the community.

The bread used to be put in the oven for baking. Some of the

unde were overdone to make them crispy.

PODERGOAN BAKER

In the evening and morning the poder or his helper would visit

the homes of the natives with a large weaver basket on a cycle

blowing horns announcing his arrival. People would either buy

the bread personally or hang a cloth bag outside the door with

a note denoting the number of bread required. Mostly the

money used to be paid monthly.

Now most of these original bakers have either closed down

their bakeries due to reasons like inadequate supply of wood,

no helping hands as the children have migrated to Gulf or UK,

or more and more use of sliced bread etc. Any one who has eaten a Goan UNDO will never forget its

taste specially with bhaaji or xacuti.

JULY 2014 THE dream |15|

First Goan Inspector General of Police to

head the Goa police, Mr. Prabhakar

Sinari, a veteran freedom fighter and

promoter of athletics and other sports in

Goa. The man who inspires awe and

respect is a very soft spoken and kind-

hearted person. Here are glimpses of the

interview with the editor:

What was the scenario when you

decided to get into this profession?

Mr. Sinari: Well, as you are aware I

joined the freedom struggle immediately

after Shri Ram Manohar Lohiya was

arrested on 18th June when I was just

14 yrs of age. In due course of time, I

got trained in the guerrilla warfare,

producing bombs and using various

weapons. I did not fear death and

wanted to fight for the liberty of my

motherland. The Portuguese had

imposed a lot of curbs of the activities of

the Goans. We used to attack the police

outposts and steal the weapons. I have

been wounded with bullet injuries

(shows the bullet injuries on his legs). I

was arrested and put in jail. My two

brothers who were not active in the

freedom struggle were also arrested and

jailed for 2 years. Our whole family was

harassed. I was jailed for almost 4 years.

The Portuguese had planned to send me

to Africa. However, I managed to escape

from the prison. The hardships faced

during the freedom struggle were plenty.

We used to hide in jungles with scarce

food at times. Staying underground after

escaping was not easy either. In the

prison we were beaten very severely.

What prompted you to get into this

profession?

Mr. Sinari: After Goa was liberated on

19th December 1961, we all enjoyed the

freedom. But, I had to take decision

about a job in order to do some earning

to support my family. It so happened

that in 1962, Indo-China war started.

They were recruiting soldiers in the

army. I appeared for the exam and was

selected. I was also selected in the

police department as Dy. Superintendent

of Police. My mother wanted me to stay

in Goa as I was away from home for 15

years during the freedom struggle.

Any hardships that you faced?

Mr. Sinari: After my selection in Police

dept. I was placed in charge of sports

without any policing powers. I got

actively involved and started to promote,

football, hockey, athletics and

swimming. I started the Goa Athletic

Federation. Subsequently, I was

absorbed in the police service after the

department was redesigned and worked

till I rose to head the department. The

funny part is that during the Portuguese

regime, my photo used to be put across

police stations as Wanted criminal and

later on my name figured as the Chief of

Goa Police.

Why did you remain confined to Panaji

and not move out to greener pastures?

Mr. Sinari: I did leave Goa on postings

to North East, Pondicherry and Andaman

and Nicobar Islands, but I never left India

and this was because of my love for my

motherland. I had lucrative offers in

Brazil, but declined.

What do you think

is your biggest

achievement?

Mr. Sinari: The

biggest day came

when Goa got

liberated. In fact,

we gave the Indian

Army all the details about the Portuguese

troupes and their methods of operations

so as to facilitate an easy victory.

Any regrets looking back?

Mr. Sinari: Well, there are. We had hoped

to have a beautiful Goa with everybody

living in harmony. To tell you frankly,

during Portuguese regime, but for the

atrocities of the military, the living was

peaceful. There was law and order, no

robberies, cheating and so on. The Goa

that we dreamt was never realized. Today,

majority of the Goans have opted for

Portuguese passport and have migrated

for better prospects. Probably, if they

were given opportunities in Goa, they

would have stayed back. The

industrialisation of Goa was not properly

planned and Goans were given nuts and

bolts jobs. Even those who had higher

education are still not having job

opportunities in Goa and hence are

migrating abroad or to rest of India.

Message to youth of today?

Mr. Sinari: Be sincere in your work. I

would like younger generation to

participate in sports on a larger scale as

that will keep you physically and mentally

healthy. This results in better

development and makes more creative

minds. Nowadays, schools concentrate

on marks. Except a few schools, majority

of schools do not have playgrounds. My

request for the next generation is to make

Goa corruption-free, garbage-free and

clean and beautiful. Though it is a tiny

state, try to retain its identity and be

proud to be a Goan.

Alu Wadi

Ingredients:6 Alu/Colacasia/tora leaves (available in rainy season), 1 wati besan, ¼ th wati rice flour, 1 wati coconut, 1 tbsp jeera, 5-6 pepper corns,2 tbsp mirchi powder, ½ tsp haldi powder, Small lime sized tamarind ball, little jaggery & hing powder.

Method:Grind coarsely coconut, jeera, pepper & tamarind with little water. Add chilli & haldi powder to it. Mix the above mixture to the besan & rice flour. Then add salt to taste, jaggery, hing and form a homogenous mixture like chutney.

Cut the stems and wash the leaves thoroughly and dry them. On a platform, arrange one leaf overlapping the end of the other (veins of leaves downwards) and apply the besan mixture to the leaves. Then keep one more leaf on top of it and another overlapping the end and reapply the mixture untill all the leaves and the mixture are over.

Roll the leaves (the swiss roll way) and cook in an idli steamer for 30 minutes. Once cooled , cut slices, roll in rawa & shallow fry with little coconut oil till nice & brown.

Tip:Tamarind cuts the itchness of the leaves which is temporary in nature. One should relishthe dish for its nutrient contents. This dish is generally made only during the monsoons when the leaves grow wildly and are fresh & green. They can also be easily grown in the home garden.

JULY 2014 THE dream |19|

Dear friends,

As I present this first issue of The Dream for the year 2014-15

before you, I wish to tell that this year the editorial board has

decided to bring a new look bulletin as the change is the main

word in Rotary which helps it to grow and improve. As you

have noticed, the installation ceremony this year was marked

with a difference with the release of theme song and three

videos based on our pet projects. Keeping pace with this we

have changed the design of this new look bulletin.

We have named each and every leaf in the magazine with the

Rotary themes of the past which we thought was apt for that

particular leaf. Besides the president's vision and secretary's

report, we have planned to include articles on our

beneficiaries, leading personalities of our community who have

offered exemplary service, projects of other clubs, brain

teasers, Anns' articles about delicious Goan recipes, Rotary

information around the globe, looking back at our club projects

and so on. None of the article are from the internet but are

contributions of the members.

The purpose of this exercise is to involve more member

participation in the club, improve club's and Rotary's image in

the community. Tying up with other clubs giving publicity to

their projects will go a long way in improving inter club

relations.

Hope you appreciate our endeavour and give your frank

opinions which will help us improve the quality of the

publications in future.

Performance inspired by Good Leadership

The new Rotary year has started and new leaders have

assumed office in various clubs across the globe. This change

over happens probably only in Rotary wherein a very

successful leader is made to step down in spite of performing

wonderfully well in the preceding year.

The successful management of an organization can be

measured by the people working for it and their level of

satisfaction and happiness. Much depends on a leader in an

organization, who must rise above the limited views. He must

carry in his mind the total vision, the complete panorama. If his

idea of success is limited, then his success will also be limited.

Ultimately the vision of the totality that the leader carries,

determines the growth, development and success of his club.

True knowledge gives us humility. Humility leads to greater

ability which in turn leads to higher prosperity.

A true leader must instil the right moral values in his fellow

members and teach them the right way to work. His action

must be inspired as we understand that the joy lies in the very

performance of the action. When the members are happy, they

are more productive. If they are disgruntled their performance

will fail. The higher or greater the level of inspiration, the more

will be the output of the members. When people discover joy

in the very execution of action, the quality of their performance

changes.

With dedication the quality of performance undergoes a radical

change. When actions are dedicated to a nobler and higher

ideal, inspired thinking produces more refined performance.

Akbar was very pleased with Tansen's singing prowess and

praised him greatly. Tansen humbly requested the emperor to

listen to his guru, who he opined was a greater artist. Akbar

was intrigued and after listening to Tansen's guru, wanted to

know the difference in the quality of his singing. Tansen

attributed the superiority to his guru's singing to the fact that

his guru sang for the Lord, whereas he himself sang for the

emperor.

The inspiration gained while working for the Higher Self is

much greater. Inspired performance will yield superior result.

Knowledge leading to humility ensures success and power,

which in turn leads to greater knowledge, more humility and

even greater success and power.

Rotary's motto of Service Above Self exemplifies it all.
