Matt Harmon is a fixture in the Northeast Ohio songwriting scene. He consistentlyengages regional audiences with songs that adeptly observe and interpret thehuman experience. Matt's songs range from the simple (the love of a dog), to thecomplex (the love of a mother with a child at war), from the imaginative (an Alienperspective of life on Earth), to the philosophical (recognizing the rarity of everysecond in life), and all points in between. He is a storyteller of the highest order, and he paints these stories over a canvas of exceptionally crisp acoustic guitarplaying.

Chapin's infectious songs, sterling musicianship and personalwarmth consistently shine through, whether he's performing on record or in aconcert hall, an outdoor festival, a school, in front of a symphony orchestra or in anintimate coffeehouse.

The New York Times called Chapin "one of the great personalities in contemporaryfolk music."

The son of noted jazz drummer and teacher Jim Chapin and the grandson ofauthor/critic Kenneth Burke and portrait painter James Chapin, Tom grew up in afamily that encouraged artistic pursuits. He began performing professionally as ateenager in the early 1960s, playing in Greenwich Village folk clubs alongside hissiblings Harry and Steve as The Chapin Brothers.

Chapin launched his solo recording career with 1976's Life Is Like That. It was thefirst of a string of albums that further established his reputation as both a giftedstoryteller and a natural entertainer, winning him an uncommonly loyal fan base inthe process. He also continued to venture into other creative areas, playing thelead role in the hit Broadway musical Pump Boys and Dinettes, working off-Broadway as musical director of both Cotton Patch Gospel and Harry Chapin: Liesand Legends, and serving as host of TV's National Geographic Explorer. He's alsowritten and performed satirical topical songs for National Public Radio's MorningEdition, and had a cameo role as the Vice Presidential candidate in JonathanDemme's 2004 remake of The Manchurian Candidate.

He also remains active in a variety of environmental causes, as well asefforts on behalf of music and the arts in our public schools.

"I'm at that place in my life where I follow what interests me," Chapin concludes. "Istill love the guitar, I still love to sing, and I still love the thrill of creation: a goodsong, a good recording, a good concert. vocals, Terry Hynde-sax, Bill Watson-bass, & Frank Casamento-drums.

15 60 75 The Numbers Band has been praised by almost every national musicpublication and several international publications since the beginning of their 30years of live performances and recordings. Many fans are under the impressionthat the band remains obscure by choice. In fact, they have never been offered acontract from any recording company in the industry, ever.

The music "cannot be categorized", "it is undefinable", "too original". The musicindustry is not about music anymore. It is about selling products the public canrelate to. After all, it is a business. Even "alternative" music has become a label. The founder of the band, Robert Kidney, explains, "The music industry, the media, and the tellsusourvision (TV) are defining for the American public what is goodmusic by only playing and supporting what is profitable. We are taught to disregardeverything that is not familiar. We (The Numbers Band) give the people our best. Our effort goes into being creative, unique and original. We define our own sound. There are no rules because we don't play the game. We are not in it for the game,we're in it for the music."

So, the band continues to create and evolve outside of the "Rock & Roll"establishment. The majority of the recordings were financed by friends who lovedthe music enough to put up their own money. Hundreds of photographs taken ofthe band in different stages of it's existence by different amazing people tell astory of intense performances, long nights, and the passing of time. Bandmembers have come and gone, and returned again. Robert sees music as muchmore than an emotional release or a performance. It is a job, a job for which hedemands respect and payment for services.

The title of the band has always aroused curiosity from fans. The fans called themThe Numbers because it was easier than trying to get the figures right. Numbershad not been used in a name before, and the political climate in 1970 was quiteOrwell-ian. Robert choose a sequence of numbers mentioned in a book written byPaul Oliver called The Blues Fell This Morning. In the chapter "The Jinx Is On Me",Oliver describes the Numbers Racket popular in Harlem in the 1950s and howdreams were analyzed as number sequences and used for placing bets. Theband's music theory specialist, Terry Hynde, also discovered that 15 divided 15 is1, 60 divided by 15 is 4, and 75 divided by 15 is 5. In a musician's world, "1, 4, 5," isreferred to as the "universal progression".

The band resides in northeast Ohio. They have several recordings under their beltand more music than they can afford to release.

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Alvin has beensinging since the age of two and pecking at the keyssince the age of three. Both of Alvin’s parents wereinvolved in music at some point in their lives. “My dadwas a singer who had his own group, and my mom wasa drummer for her church when she was young. As you

a drummer for her church when she was young. As youcan see, the combination of singing and musicianshipwas in the blood.”

Through watching and listening to his father rehearseand work out harmony arrangements with his group,

Alvin would begin to imitate what he heard. “My Mother saw the potential andstarted buying me toy instruments (i.e. pianos and guitars) and it wasn’t longbefore I started to hear ideas as early as three years old, believe it or not, and I’vebeen going strong ever since.”

Over the years, and without formal training, Alvin would go on to learn to play thepiano, guitar, bass and drums. Outside of being a singer and self-taught musician,Alvin had a love for writing and storytelling. He would eventually use that talent forsongwriting. Alvin’s musical journey has been extensive and those experienceshave been instrumental in Alvin’s understanding of the various aspects of music towhich he has been involved and is the key to his versatility as a producer. “Ofcourse like any of the people who do what I do, I have many musical influences.Artists like Steely Dan, Earth, Wind & Fire, Pat Metheny, George Duke, StanleyClarke, James Taylor, Sting, Sade, to Deitrick Haddon, Fred Hammond,Commissioned, The Winans & Israel Houghton to name a few. However, I am verycareful about the things that I choose to listen to.”

Occidental Gypsy$20.00 Friday 5/13 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Top Notch Gypsy Jazz Quintet From Providence, Rhode Island!

Featuring: Brett Feldman-lead guitar, Jeremy Frantz-vocals & guitar, Eli Bishop-violin, Jeff Feldman-bass, & Erick Cifuentes-percussion.

Occidental Gypsy is pioneering the sound of Gypsy Pop. Their mélange ofuptempo, high-energy rhythms of Gypsy, melded with the catchy melodic hooks ofPop delivers a thrilling auditory experience to listeners.

It should then come as no surprise that Occidental Gypsy decided to gypsifyMichael Jackson’s “Thriller” on the band’s debut album. "Over Here," released inFebruary 2011, has been quick to garner critical acclaim. Motif Magazine wrote,“Listeners will surely be all in with Occidental Gypsy’s Over Here” and defined theband as “a terrific and unpretentious fab four”.

The appeal of Occidental Gypsy is finding its way across multiple markets. In thepast, Gypsy music has proven its accessibility in the success of acts such asCaravan Palace, The Lost Fingers, and the Gogol Bordello. Now, Occidental Gypsy’ssound is engaging an incredibly wide spectrum of listeners. In many ways the heartof Gypsy Pop embodies the essence and spirit of what jazz was in its infancy:developing, improvising, and arranging, with contemporary music as a foundation.

Occidental Gypsy was originally formed by brothers Brett (lead guitar) and JeffFeldman (bassist) as a straight-ahead Gypsy Jazz Quartet. Through the release ofOver Here and the addition of new members, the band has taken on a far morediverse, sophisticated, and eclectic sound. The group is fronted by Berklee trainedsinger and rhythm guitarist Scott (“Scottie”) Kulman, and supported by two Berkleestudents: violinist Jakub Trasak from the Czech Republic, and percussionistFrancisco Vielma from Venezuela.

An Occidental Gypsy performance includes so much more than just music. Scottie,Jakub, Brett, Jeff, and Francisco are incredibly energetic and charming entertainerswho interact with fans on a personal level. Live, the band compliments originalmaterial with expertly arranged gypsified covers.

The name Occidental Gypsy (Western gypsy) embodies the concept behind GypsyPop. The group has taken the Gypsy sound that originated in Eastern Europe andbrought it Over Here to blend it seamlessly with contemporary American music.Interestingly, Gypsy Swing was created by taking American Jazz to the East andblending it with the Gypsy Folk tradition. Now almost a century later OccidentalGypsy is bringing the music back home.

Guitarist George Benson calls Napoleon “sensational.” Detroit Free Press criticMark Stryker says Napoleon “plays with a gentle, purring tone that makes you leanin close to hear its range of color and articulation.” Washington Post critic MikeJoyce praises his “exceptionally nimble finger-style technique.” Comparing him toWes Montgomery, music critic Michael G. Nastos says, “he displays an evenbalance of swing, soul, and single-line or chord elements that mark an emergingvoice dedicated to tradition and universally accessible jazz values.”

Born in Brooklyn in 1977 and raised in Ann Arbor Michigan, Randy Napoleon beganhis journey in jazz immediately after graduating from University of Michigan. JeffHamilton of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra invited the young Napoleon to doa series of performances with them at the Hollywood Bowl. From there,Napoleon’s career took off, first touring with pianist Benny Green nationally andinternationally for a year, and then full time with the Clayton-Hamilton JazzOrchestra. A three-year stint with crooner Michael Buble followed; Napoleon isfeatured on Buble’s Grammy-nominated CD “Caught in the Act.”

Vintage Guitar Magazine: What younger jazz guitarists stand out to you?

George Benson: I like the guitar player who’s playing with Freddy Cole [RandyNapoleon]. He has an all-fingers approach; he doesn’t use just thumb or pick. He’sspectacular.

Guitarist, Vocalist, & Founding member of Blood, Sweat, andTears, and Blues Project, plays special Solo show, with classictunes, and great stories!Steve Katz started at 15, studying guitar with Reverend Gary Davis. Steve wouldsometimes act as road manager for Reverend Davis and met many of the great“rediscovered” blues men like Son House, Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt.

Steve starting playing in Greenwich Village - during this time there were numerousmusicians obsessed with American roots music. Steve, Maria Muldaur, JohnSebastian and David Grisman – who found the common denominator in jug bandmusic. They and some other friends formed the Even Dozen Jug Band and werecourted by Elektra Records for whom they recorded an album in 1964.

Steve was asked to audition for the Danny Kalb Quartet. He got the job. Al Kooperjoined, and they had the Blues Project, a foray of young white middle-classmusicians into the amplified world of Chicago blues.

After the Blues Project, Steve, Al Kooper, Bobby Colomby and Jim Fielder decidedto work up a set, mainly of Al’s new songs, for a benefit concert whereby enoughmoney would be raised to send Al to London where he wanted to live. Joined byFred Lipsius on alto sax, the concert raised enough money for Al to get a cab to theairport. There was no choice but start another band. Influenced by the Electric Flagand the Buckinghams, a horn section was utilized with rock arrangements thatwere a touch more sophisticated. Thus, the formation of Blood, Sweat & Tears, aColumbia Records contract, and the album Child is Father to the Man. Recordedand mixed in only two weeks, the album sold moderately well but was a hugecritical success.

Al left BS & T after only six months. Getting the record company to continue withthe band without Kooper was difficult. Auditions were held and David Clayton-Thomas was hired. Columbia reluctantly agreed to go ahead with a new album. That album sold six million copies worldwide and fostered three number onesingles. Steve continued with BS & T for five years, during which time the groupwon three Grammies, were voted best band by the Playboy Jazz and Pop Poll twoyears in a row, and won three major Downbeat awards, to name a few. Steve wrotemany songs during his tenure with BS&T, including his well-loved “Sometimes inWinter”.

In 1972 Steve met Lou Reed and became friends. Steve was asked to produce hisnext record Rock & Roll Animal and then Sally Can’t Dance. After a number ofproductions during this period, including the wonderful Nightlights by ElliottMurphy, Steve wanted to return again to playing music.

Although American Flyer was not a performing band, it gave Steve anothercreative outlet in which to work and talented people to work with. Steve was joinedby writer Eric Kaz, Craig Fuller from Pure Prairie League, and Doug Yule from TheVelvet Underground. The first of their two albums was produced by George Martin.

Steve was offered an opportunity to get closer to the business of music in 1977with his appointment as East Coast Director of A&R and later as Vice President ofMercury Records.

Later Steve became enamored with all things Irish and in 1987 became ManagingDirector of Green Linnet Records, the foremost record label of traditional Irishmusic in America.

Upon moving to NYC, Bianchi quickly established himself on the competitive scene.Legendary saxophonist Lou Donaldson immediately took notice of the youngorganist. Donaldson would hire him when organist Dr. Lonnie Smith could notmake an engagement.

Upon resuming his tenure in Denver, Bianchi joined the faculty of the University ofColorado at Boulder Jazz Studies Program teaching piano, theory and ensembles toundergraduate, masters and doctoral students. During this time he recorded hisfirst album as a leader, East Coast Roots, which includes Mark Whitfield on guitarand Byron Landham on drums. At the same time, Bianchi began working closelywith drummer Ralph Peterson Jr. on collaborative projects including, co-leadingThe Unity Project (a tribute to organist Larry Young and his album Unity).

While still actively performing with both Pat Martino and Lou Donaldson, Bianchinot only continues to collaborate with many well known musicians he also leads anumber of different groups including his trio, which is featured on his latest release“A Higher Standard”.

Pat shows no signs of slowing down. He is constantly working to push his playing tothe next level.
