GRAD HOUSELOCATION: Cincinnati, OHAREA: 80,000 SFPROGRAM: Graduate Student Housing
PARTNER: Luke Sinopoli, M.Arch 2014
The Grad House takes a new spin on an otherwise out-dated typology. Located on a busy street at the intersection of the University of Cincinnati campus with the neighboring Uptown District, the building acts as a welcome mat for the campus. With a Grand Stair in the style of the Spanish Steps cascading down the hilly terrrain into the campus, the landscape invites the adjacent community into the University. Two primary masses frame the central procession, each bi-furcated to allow light to flood centralized common spaces. At the ground floors, retail, dining, and
gallery spaces promote interaction with the public. The floors above are dedicated to the more academic elements of campus life, with twenty-first century amenities including conference rooms, breakout spaces, study carrels, and a gymnasium. The residents occupy the upper stories. Instead of the traditional apartment or suite-style residential spaces, each student is afforded a small private space which progressively opens onto a public internal avenue with meeting spaces, reading zones, dining areas, and other points to encourage interaction amongst the residents.

CRANBROOK WELLNESS CENTERLOCATION: Bloomfield Hills, MIAREA: 10,000 SFPROGRAM: Holistic Health Center
The Cranbrook Wellness Center is situated along the Grand Allee of the Cranbrook Campus in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The Center provides the bodily compliment to the mental stimulation provided by the Library and Art Museum on the end of campus immediately adjacent to the Orpheus Fountain. The new building reinforces the symmetry of the current configuration by mirroring the setback established by the Archives building. Taking cues from the original Saarinen plan, the building uses established axes and unfinished pavement patterns to determine boundary, access, and
orientation. The building takes advantage of views where available and considers the environmental context of the site. Per the program, it provides smaller, human-scale places for individual contemplation within the context of a monumental setting. The architecture reflects the program, centering itself on a crystalline complex which houses the baths on the lower level. Above, hospitality suites ring the exterior. Material selections juxtapose texture with cleanliness. In total, the Wellness Center establishes a cultural hub for mental and physical health on the Cranbrook Campus.

SHAKER RETREATLOCATION: Greater Miami Valley, OHAREA: 8,000 SFPROGRAM: Meeting Center
Filling the void between two existing structures - the farmhouse and a machine shed - new elements of program establish a more immediate connection amongst the units on the farmstead. Passageways direct movement away from the neighboring road and sever the connection to the outside world. The new structure celebrates the isolation that the Shaker Retreat may afford. This is not a lonely place, though. Added to the complex are places for gathering: classrooms, an auditorium, a cafeteria, and a courtyard. All are composed around a centralized core, which both provides
service and dampens potential interruptions. Internal and external views continue to connect the spaces, with overlooks in multiple places, and internal windows allowing for continued interaction amongst the parts. Indeed, interaction informs the entirety of the composition. A variety of breakout spaces abound on the ground level. Above, the staff is housed in an open plan book-ended by conference rooms that could be converted to private offices. In all, the building celebrates the heritage of the existing site while providing for contemporary modes of interaction.

SCHOLAR’S RESIDENCELOCATION: Greater Miami Valley, OHAREA: 1000 SFPROGRAM: Residence for One
Balancing stewardship and privacy, the scholar’s residence is the on-site home to the sole resident of a Rural Field Station. The structure sits at the elbow between a welcome center and a research facility, serving as a hinge between the two zones of the greater complex. The residence hunkers against a large wall that runs north-south adjacent to a major movement corridor on the site. Built from locally-sourced brick, portions of this wall are designed to slowly decay, reinforcing the connection to the site. To the south, the formal front entrance sits tucked behind this wall, in a comfortable nook
that continues into the heart of the building. The northern and western portions embrace the woods beyond, and a complimentary courtyard is embedded behind the wall of this private compound. The ground level provides compact spaces for food preparation, service, and relaxation. Integrated into an interior bookshelf, a small staircase ascends from the lounge on the ground floor to a sleeping and dressing area on the second. In addition, a small office opens off of the sleeping quarters. The residence is a quiet retreat that celebrates its context, both in form and material selection.

INDIE RECEPTIONInterior DesignMillwork
Given a blank floor plan of an 18’ x 24’ space, the digital design of a reception desk became a generator for the rest of the interior. The front is composed of a series of CNC-milled slats that are assembled and mounted onto a laminated plywood surface that acts both as a destination and a director of traffic to two doors beyond. Inlaid wooden accents in the floor invert the relationship and echo the geometry of a billowing ceiling above. Conceived as a sheet of fabric stretched over an aluminum frame, the ceiling ripples out from the door frames. Inset lighting acts to direct traffic, illuminate the work surface
of the reception desk, and flood light down the finished faces of the walls of the space. The receptionist desk sits between two glass doors etched with ‘Studio’ and ‘Office’, which lead to those destinations. At the rear of the space, built-in seating angled towards dual-screens provide a place for guests to wait. In all, this project is an attempt to integrate the many possibilities afforded by designing in the digital environment into a cohesive, constructible place. The space serves to engage the visitor and create a state of anticipation for the spaces that lay beyond.

SWEETGUM LAMPCNC Milled SculpturePlywood
Taking inspiration from the form of a sweetgum ball, this floor lamp was assembled using component parts that were milled from a single 4’ x 8’ sheet of birch plywood. The geodesic structure is based on a twenty-sided polyhedron composed of equilateral triangles. Subtracting the common points of intersection of these surfaces transformed the triangles into hexagons, and additional operations further opened up the exterior surface of the built form. To secure adjacent faces, the “spikes” of the sweetgum ball were reconceived as connectors, which plunge through the exterior envelope
to express themselves on the interior. No additional fasteners are used. Additional surface articulation on the spikes is the remnant of cusps left by successive passes of the mill. When illuminated, the form casts wild geometric shadows in all directions. The light source is embedded into the base and obscured from vision. Future development of this project might consider different materials or geometric forms. Considering the potential afforded by illumination, additional iterations could make use of varying degrees of transparency or selective use of color to further amplify the effect.

300 CATHEDRALLOCATION: Baltimore, MDAREA: 40,000 SFPROGRAM: Apartments
FIRM: Ziger / Snead ArchitectsTEAM: Jonas Risen, Katherine LePage, and Drew Suszko
300 Cathedral was built in 1849 by the Odd Fellows, a fraternal order of gentlemen that used the building as their headquarters for the better part of the following century. After several years of vacancy, the property was purchased by a Washington, D.C. - based development company. Ziger / Snead Architects was hired to survey the existing structure and produce a CD-set with the expressed goal of maximizing the rentable property. After modeling the existing building in Revit and generating a series of alternative options, the firm was able to carve the building into 59 rentable units: Studios, 1 BR, 2 BR’s,
and Lofts. In order to meet the goals of the client, each unit is as compact as possible, while still striving to meet the expectations of the Baltimore rental market. In addition, the building hosts off-street parking in the basement of the structure and amenities include a shared gym and entertaining space. My contributions to the project included field measurements, managing the digital model, generating detail and construction drawings, and coordinating with the client and external consultancts to produce the final CD-set.

MARYLAND HALLLOCATION: Annapolis, MDAREA: 20,000 SFPROGRAM: Performing Arts Renovation and Addition
FIRM: Ziger / Snead ArchitectsTEAM: Joe Cellucci, Jonas Risen, and Drew Suszko
Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts is a community-based organization in Annapolis, Maryland that celebrates and promotes the creative and performing arts. Located in the old Annapolis High School, Maryland Hall houses spaces for fine art, ballet, theater, vocal groups, and the Annapolis Symphony. Recently, the organization has identified deficiencies with the performing spaces, which are located in the old high school theater and gymnasium. Ziger / Snead Architects was hired to generate a conceptual design to renovate several of the existing spaces, especially those dedicated
to performance. In addition, the firm proposed the addition of three new zinc-clad volumes, designed to complement the existing structure - a set shop, a fly (on top of the existing stage), and a reception/dressing complex, successively. I joined the team during our transition from conceptual design to design development. In the process, I modeled the existing building in Revit, translated the proposed concept to more concrete physical form, and proposed several variations, including a revised entry-vestibule into the reception space, which will become the new face of the building.

KINGDOM TOWERLOCATION: Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi ArabiaHEIGHT: 1,000+ metersPROGRAM: Hotel, Office, and Residential
FIRM: Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architects
My primary responsibility during my time on the Kingdom Tower project was to coordinate a comprehensive set of Fire and Life Safety drawings. Partnering with consultants and specialists, the team produced a design and the corresponding documentation to satisfy IBC 2009 for what will be the world’s tallest building upon completion. To accompany this set, I also produced a document summarizing the fire and life safety features of the building for the Saudi Arabian Civil Defense Authorities. During this process, I worked in close partnership with Peter Weismantle, Director
AS+GG and Chairman of the Height Committee of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. During design development, I produced a set of alternative designs and details for the series of balconies that ring the tower, as well as the initial night-lighting concept for the top of the tower. This design celebrates the floral quality of the tower’s apex. Upon implementation, the design will mark the building on the Jeddah Skyline by night.
