What are Biomonitors?

n Instruments that measure changes inthe function of organisms in responseto pollutants

n Made possible by advances in digitalvideo processing, signal analysis, andfast computers

Biomonitor Advantagesn Real-time Drinking Water Source Testing.n Sensitive to toxic compounds. Unlike

analytical instruments, will respond to severaltoxic compounds without pre-calibration.

n Alarms can be set to not only monitor hightoxicity but also rate of change of toxicity.

n Remote Connectivity Possible

Available Biomonitorsn Daphnia Biomonitor - Preliminary

testing performed at T&E Facilityn Algae Biomonitor - Testing initiated at

T&E Facilityn Clam Biomonitor - Unit to be installed at

T&E in FY2003n Fish Biomonitor - Proposed unit for

FY2003

Daphnia Biomonitor -Operating Principlen Uses a camera to monitor activity of several

Daphnia Magna in a test cell.n Computer analyzes the image continuously to

detect changes in several parameters such asspeed, swimming height, curviness of swimpattern, etc.

n Computer uses measurements of theseparameters to compute a “toxicity index”.Alarms based on limits set on this computedtoxicity index.

Tests Completed on DaphniaBiomonitorn Approximately 55 total test runs, including

baseline and controls.n Exposure to Cadmium at 2.5 ppm, 0.5 ppm,

and 0.1 ppm.n Exposure to Gasoline at 5 ppm.n Effect of water source - Tested reconstituted

hard water, laboratory control water andsurface water (from East Fork Lake).

n Test results correlated to water qualityParameters: pH, DO, Alkalinity, Hardness

Cadmium Tests on Daphnia

n Baseline Time: 12 to 24 hoursn Cadmium Concentrations: 0.1, 0.5, 2.5

ppmn Exposure Times: 2 hours and 4 hoursn Recovery Period: 6 to 24 hours.

Results of Cadmium Testing

n Cadmium is not acutely toxic at lowconcentrations; this is borne out by thefollowing results:n Alarms consistently achieved at 2.5 ppm

cadmium.n Alarms seen 50% of the time at 0.5 ppm.n No alarms at 0.1 ppm cadmium.

Algae Biomonitor - OperatingPrinciple

n Measures the fluorescence of an algaepopulation.

n Compares measured fluorescence in thepresence of toxic compounds to thatmeasured under baseline conditions.

n Alarms based on limits set for thedifference in fluorescence.
