ports Challenge Australia is a non-profit, public benevolent organisation established in

1992. Sports Challenge now offers a number of ‘world first’ mentoring programs that are delivered through an experiential (hands on) learning medium. The programs are delivered by trained male and female sporting mentors with the aim of up skilling and empowering children and adolescents to use more of their potential in dealing with peers, family, school and community.

The highly motivational activities, which are age specific, engage and develop cognitive function and use both indoor and outdoor settings.

All programs are based upon thorough research and longitudinal application. The successful programs offered include:1. An objective Pastoral Care (self esteem/self

concept) audit of whole school cohorts as an identification protocol for both ‘at risk’ students and potential leaders aged six to 17 years.

2. A prevention/intervention mentoring program of life skills which enhance self esteem and self concept, run successfully over the past 16 years.

3. Leadership and Values programs to extend and develop potential leaders including objective audits.

4. A new Emotional Intelligence (EI) audit and program for the development of emotional literacy, fitness, depth, creativity as well as the development of increased empathy, social relationships and self esteem.

5. The objective testing of fitness and skill levels of students called Physical Quotient (PQ), as well as designing and implementing physical education and sports programs.

The pivotal Sports Challenge programs are based upon the notion of ‘challenge’, with small groups of identified students working with caring, committed and trained mentors.

The various programs on offer range from a six-week (two x 90 minute sessions per week) to whole class programs ranging from one to six weeks. Programs are individually designed to meet the identified needs of each target group and include whole school programs in country and remote locations.

The mentors, both male and female, deliver programs designed to enhance the following life skills: positive communication; leadership; conflict and anger management; reasoned risk taking; healthy lifestyle choices; wellness; realistic goal setting; stress and time management; problem solving; and promoting values of school, family and community belonging – while

developing a sense of basic trust and empowerment.

With a team of passionate and committed staff, supported by outstanding long term sponsors, Sports Challenge Australia has been able to be a ‘peak provider’ of youth programs throughout Australia in metropolitan, country and remote locations.

In 2004, Sports Challenge launched its corporate training arm, Australian Corporate Challenge (see reverse side

of this issue for stories and information). Proceeds from Australian Corporate Challenge

programs are donated to Sports Challenge to support its worthy cause.

amily has always epitomised the values that drive Sports Challenge and in 2008, that

family has grown again. We said goodbye to Camilla Milburn, our

former Manager who returned to Queensland due to a family illness and welcomed Sydney nusbaum from Vancouver, Canada as our new Programs Coordinator.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Camilla for her six years of dedication to Sports Challenge and Australian Corporate

Challenge where she made an enduring legacy with both the children and corporates she engaged. We wish her well in her new journey in life.

As one door closes another one has opened with Sydney, who is a graduate of McGill university in Montreal, Canada. Sydney also completed her practicum with Sports Challenge in

2007, which motivated her to keep in contact with CEO Garry Tester for the opportunity of a permanent place on the Sports Challenge Team.

On coming back to Perth in early 2008, she was given a baptism of fire, five days after stepping off her Singapore Airlines flight from Vancouver she was on another Singapore Airlines flight to work in our Singapore program, then straight back and onto a SkyWest flight to Kununurra to work in the remote community of Timber Creek, northern Territory. Then back to Perth to the corporate training world of St Georges Terrace assisting in a program with Medicare Australia. Throughout this unrelenting schedule,

Sydney has brought a fantastic caring and passionate breath of life to our programs and is already a valued member of the Sports Challenge family.

I would also wish to thank Jennifer Clay, Sports Challenge Financial Controller, director and IT Manager who is one truly outstanding member of our team. As a volunteer, nothing is too much trouble and her reward is being able to “give something back to the community and see those smiling faces” at the end of each program.

Again, I must thank the other valued members of our Executive Team who work tirelessly to ensure we can reach the most needy in our communities Australia Wide.

Sports Challenge would not be possible without our passionate supporters. This year we welcomed onboard drinkWise Australia who are equally inspired by our work in remote communities and also see young people as the responsible adults of the future. The other members of our family are the corporate sponsors who have been with us for so many years, thank you so much for your ongoing commitment.

Finally, our wonderful group of mentors who make it all happen on the ground, thank you for your enthusiasm, passion and commitment. This year when faced with a growing workload and a drain of experienced mentors, Julian Leach, Mike Ellis, CJ Jackson, Briony Keenan and ramon Andersson have all stepped in to coach and mentor our ‘rookies’. This is what family is about and I thank you all.

As always, Sports Challenge is inundated with requests for needy communities around Australia and we will always try our utmost to deliver.

In our 16th year, the Sports Challenge family motto still burns brightly: ThE ChALLEnGE hAS BEGun, ThE JOurnEY COnTInuES

ecently retired Governor General Michael Jeffery has been a passionate supporter of Sports

Challenge Australia since 1998. Born in remote Wiluna, Western Australia he knows personally the pressures of isolation that young people face and the need for quality role models and programs in their lives.

The partnership between the Governor General and CEO dr Garry Tester began in 1998 when Michael was serving as the Governor of WA. Garry and the Sports Challenge Program won the prestigious Queens Trust Award for their outstanding services to young people in country and remote locations in WA. When Michael presented the award, it triggered an enduring friendship between the two, who were both passionate and totally committed to the future of this country, through its young people.

The journey of Sports Challenge has always been close to the heart of the Governor General and in 2008 marking 10 years, Jennifer Clay (Sports Challenge director and Financial Controller) along with Garry met with Michael in darwin to discuss the plight of indigenous young people in remote locations.

Michael was delighted to see drinkWise Australia getting right behind Sports Challenge to provide much-needed role models and programs in these areas. he said, “clearly the future of this great nation is in our young people and we must not forget those who by circumstance are in remote locations, I am thrilled to support such a professional organisation like Sports Challenge which delivers such positive outcomes, over such a sustained time”.

We know that in retirement that Michael will not be resting, as there is much to do in

life’s journey. One thing for sure, he is well and truly a dedicated member of the Sports Challenge family.

ike Captain Kirk’s Log from Star Trek, Sports Challenge CEO Garry Tester’s diary reads like a

time warp.

05:00 hours 18/10/08 Perth, temperature 10deg C, depart on SkyWest for Kununurra with Sports Challenge Team: Sydney nusbaum, Brendon Kelly and Taryn Priestly.

11:15 hours Arrive Kununurra temperature 36 deg C in the shade. depart in Budget 4Wd for Timber Creek and Katherine (nT) 525km. Arrive Katherine 19:00 hours, temperature 37 deg C.

06:00 hours 19/10/08 depart Katherine, stock up with fuel and groceries, depart for ngukurr (480km East) in Arnhem Land. Gravel roads, cross rivers, arrive accommodation at roper Bar 15:00 hours, temperature 42 deg C. unload provisions, set up camp and then to ngukurr school to set up for first day of program.

The good ship Enterprise could have been a welcome addition to the Sports Challenge Fleet. Just to allow the Sports Challenge program to start has taken some 3500km by plane and road and some 26 hours of travel, an exhausting trip for most, but all part of a day’s work for the Sports Challenge Team.

As rick Eade, Principal of ngukurr explains, “This is what makes Sports Challenge stand out from the rest, there are so many well meaning organisations who want to come here when it is cold down south. Sports Challenge delivers all year round and this makes a

real difference in bonding with students and staff alike.”

With the support of drinkWise Australia for the next two years, Sports Challenge began baseline testing of fitness and skill levels, exercise patterns, self-esteem and Aspirational levels, while allowing all staff an insight into what can be expected.

With such a dedication just to arrive, all goes well for another successful foray into the next unknown galaxy, as Captain Kirk would say.

ngukurr is a remote Aboriginal township on the northern bank of the roper river some 100km inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria; the town is 310km by road from Katherine, the nearest regional centre that has Government offices, banking, hospital and supermarket facilities. ngukurr’s remoteness is increased by poor road access. This is cut off entirely during the wet season that stretches from november/december to April/May.

ith the support of drinkwise Australia, Timber Creek has been able to make Sports Challenge

part of their family in 2007 and onwards. After building a strong commitment with the school and the community, Sports Challenge is able to come back time and again to deliver first class programs to the students.

In 2008, fitness and skill testing has been completed along with daily PE classes and life skills programs. One key highlight has been the construction of 15 African drums under the expert guidance of African drummer Paul Osei. In another logistical milestone for Sports Challenge, the drum bases were imported from Africa, the goat hides for the drum faces and the leather binding sourced locally, and all of this was transported from Perth to Timber Creek successfully, ready for action.

The week of building and playing the drums was a highlight of 2008. Each class rotates the drums, plays, and sings African songs in beautiful symmetry. As Paul explains, “These kids have such great rhythm, all they need is a focus and direction.” And did they succeed.

Caroline Brennan-Tucker loved the experience. As a teacher in remote schools for many years, she said, “This is what we love about Sports Challenge, they are always thinking of ways to motivate and encourage our children to succeed.”

IT specialist Phill Bell has also bought into the program with the assistance of Sports

Challenge director Jennifer Clay providing a new laser colour printer thought her company Jh Computer Services, which now allows students to produce high quality productions like the colour example on these pages.

It is what CEO dr Garry Tester embraces from this time involved in Australian Football. “It is the one-percenters that matter. If we can get the fundamentals right in the remote schools and ensure support and partnership with all, we will make a difference.”

You only have to look at the numbers who are now regularly attending school to see that learning is valued by all.

John McEnroe

SYdnEY went there . . . but her heart and head told her to cross to the “other side” of the country. And Sports Challenge is mighty glad her feet followed the message.

Instinct also told Vancouver Island reared Sydney ‘Ski-ing’ nusbaum that she would love Perth. And now the west has fallen in love with the bright and bubbly 22-year-old Canadian, the programs co-ordinator at Sports Challenge.

Sydney, who visited the eastern states years ago with her parents and sister Kim, did the exchange semester section of her Bachelor of Commerce degree at the university of WA in 2007. She went back to the Montreal-based McGill university to complete her certificate, before returning to WA six months ago.

“I’m glad I did, I just love it here,’’ Sydney, who learnt to ski the world-famous Whistler mountain when she could walk, said.

“I miss the downhill ski-ing, I miss my sister and mum and dad. But I love it so much here.

“For a girl who grew up in the snow, I cannot get enough of the sun here. I will go from being in minus 40 degree to 40 degree weather.’’

Sydney worked part-time as a coach at Sports Challenge while studying in Perth last year.

“I’m loving it and look forward to the role expanding and exploring new programs. For now, I am helping Garry [Tester] focussing on our core programs.

“It’s a very versatile position and I’m loving it.’’

however, the lady who’s loving the sun, also wants to get some snow. “I crave the snow, I was reared on it, so when I get holidays I will be going back to ski Whistler,’’ she said.

WhEn this time last year his girlfriend told him there was a coaching position going at Sports Challenge, david Chitty had a spring in his step.he contacted CEO Garry Tester . . . and the rest is history.

When he started at Sports Challenge, david, 25, was studying

education at Edith Cowan university. he’s still at that educational

facility, but is now studying sports

science. “I’m loving my course and

I’m loving my role at Sports Challenge,’’ david said.

The fitness coach for the colts at East Fremantle Football Club, david’s main role at Sports Challenge is making a weekly visit to Scotch College.

“I am running a leadership program for about 20 boys,’’ david said. “The lads are really interested and involved and it’s more than just games for the sake of it.

“We do activities that makes them think. My plan

is to become qualified in sports science by the end

of next year and then I will work out where I want to go.

“right now it’s good fun.’’

ThE kids will tell you that C.J. is better than any dJ. “he’s much more fun and sometimes he’s louder,’’ one observed of the most popular C.J.

C.J. stands for Craig Jackson, though, he admits, very few people would know such. “I’m just C.J. Jackson,’’ he said.

When asked why he relates to the youngsters in the Sports Challenge program so well, he replied: “Because I understand them.’’

“I am 45 going on 14. I’m a kid at heart and I think the kids like that. They certainly understand it.’’

C.J., a former star in the State Basketball League, recently had to relinquish roles as

an assistant coach with the Perth Wildcats and the coach of the

Cockburn Cougars – because he was appointed the operations manager

of Basketball WA.“It was seen as a

conflict of interests and I had to give the coaching away,” C.J. said. however,

that’s something he won’t be doing at Sports Challenge.

“Like Mike Ellis (former Wildcats captain and later coach), I’ve been here since

day one. It’s a large part of my life,’’

C.J. said.“I enjoy the

interaction with the kids. I love the camaraderie, the mentoring role with the. And as I said, I’m just growing up like them.

“And Sports Challenge has been very good for me. It has development me as a person and as a professional and Garry [Tester] has mentored me. his advice has helped me step into different organisations.’’

he response from parents to the visit of Sports Challenge to Kinross College said it all –

particularly one.“Some parents noticed a favourable

difference in their children after they did the program,’’ Mandy Grant, the team leader of years six, seven and eight at the school, said. Mandy shares the year eight duties with Jessica Sandhu, who also leads year nine at Kinross.

“One girl become much calmer at home after Sports Challenge came here,’’ Mandy added.

“her family noticed a big difference to her character.’’

Forty students from Kinross broke into two groups late last year. Mentors from Sports Challenge visited the school each week for six weeks.

“The kids had an absolute ball. They played basketball and did some fitness, but the mentors mainly involved

them in emotional testing and life skills,’’ Mandy said.

“The children responded positively. Getting Sports Challenge back is something we will be seriously looking at.’’

ith sporting legends Mike Ellis basketball and John O’Connell soccer combined with emerging

elite athletes Jessie Phillips kayaking and Taryn Priestly basketball the year 10 girls from St Mary’s completed a festival of sport before terms end.

Combined with highly motivated problem solving activities the theme of important team work with good collegiate spirit was the message of the day.

As former Wildcats captain and coach Mike Ellis explains, “getting these girls motivated

in team work activities drives home the message that every individual is vital to a successful outcome, this is where it must start”.

John O’Connell former state captain and international player concurred, “it gives me great hope for the future of sport when you see these girls so inspires to help each other… it has been a pleasure”.

Margaret Jordan the year 10 coordinator loves the work Sports Challenge delivers

every year with her girls… “I look forward to this day as it runs like clock work and the girls get so much out of not only rubbing shoulders with great athletes, but learning the fundamentals of sportsmanship and team work… It is a great program.”

porting a surname of Beckham, one would probably be pretty good at sport.Wendy Beckham is . . . and she’s

also a good sport. A seven-year physical education specialist at Manning Primary School, Wendy introduced the 260-children strong school to Sports Challenge last year.

And the pair will be reunited in 2009.“With obesity such a big issue, we wanted

to measure the fitness levels of our students,’’ Wendy said.

So the coaches from Sports Challenge tested the 100 children in years one, three

and five. Follow up tests will be done early next year.

“All the children loved the activities and the games and stretching exercises. They were also tested on their upper body strength.

“The results weren’t particularly good in that area and we will be entering a fundamental movements program, which will also involve the pre-primary children.

“We do fitness here every day. Our Principal, robert Searle, is very big on us doing such and has had a big influence on the program.’’

We want Manning Primary to lead the way in health and fitness.

The extensive reports for teachers and parents made available by Sports Challenge will ensure the whole community of Manning works to improve standards

he success of Wesley College’s middle school in Perth has been the result of Principal Geoff Kay’s

vision to equip all boys from years six, seven and eight with problem solving and leadership skills, emotional intelligence (EI) and good self-esteem/self-concept.

The partnership with Sports Challenge began several years ago with objective baseline data in self-esteem and EI, along with an experiential leadership and life skills program.

As Principal Kay explains, “having good, reliable data has been the backbone to our (MIS) data to identify areas of both strengths and weaknesses. From here our teachers can design programs with targeted outcomes.”

In comes Sports Challenge to work with each year level throughout the year with cognitive and experiential learning activities where each boy is assessed on key skills of communication, problem solving, leadership, team work and EI.

Basketball player C.J. Jackson, who has coached at Wesley over the years, has seen the development. “We used to have boys who were to ask qestions and they were very

shy – now we can’t hold them back. They are into everything and they are fantastic to work with,” he said.

“Wesley’s partnership with Sports Challenge is now paying off and is important for the success of our middle school,” said Principal Kay. “We are thrilled with their professionalism and enthusiasm.”

eter Frietag, deputy Principal of Scotch College in Western Australia and a former national

hockey player for South Africa, knows the meaning of commitment and dedication to reach your full potential in any field. Also the boys in year 10 know that many of them have great expectations from their families to succeed in business when they leave school.

These two ingredients have led to a wonderful partnership with Sports Challenge

over the past five years where each year 10 student participated in a leadership program combining world-first cognitive and experiential problem solving activities to develop their skill level to lead.

2012 Olympic kayak hopeful Jesse Phillips has led this program for many years and as he says “many of these boys remind me of myself at their age, the pressure at school and home to succeed, but no road map to where I am supposed to be going.”

“This program opens your eyes to what is required to make it in any area: teamwork, commitment, asking for support and being passionate about your field of endeavour,” Jesse said.

That is why Peter and Jesse get along so well, the skill and energy that Jesse and his fellow coaches bring to the program can only enhance and motivate the boys to want to give their journey a ‘red hot go’.

At the end of the program, each student is assessed on their skills of communication, teamwork, enthusiasm/vitality and leadership potential along with a narrative comment based on their application and outcomes. To ensure ‘best practice’ is maintained students evaluate the program from their stance and each coach is involved in a rigorous debrief.

hen Julie Mernaugh, Year 10 coordinator of Perth’s Iona College, sat down with Sport

Challenge’s CEO and Programs Coordinator she was beaming with anticipation for the 150 girls who were to participate in the 2008 program. In the past two years outstanding results had been achieved by ensuring each girl used their right brain capacity (emotional side) along with their left side (decision making) to their best ability.

By using Sport Challenge’s base line testing of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Self Esteem (SE), programs have been designed to develop skill levels in both areas of the brain.

In 2008, under the new leadership of Programs Coordinator, Sydney nusbaum a

new program was launched to identify any weaknesses from the baseline (EI) and (SE) testing to build a program which will also target key components of skill to enhance leadership, effective school and community participation, engaging effectively with peers, teachers and family wile prioritizing personal development.

As Sydney explained, “I have been so lucky in having an opportunity to travel and study in my home country of Canada and meet students from around the world and there are a few things I have learnt which will make a success of your life: Family, Listening and hearing, write a diary and never be afraid to ask for help.”

So the program I designed for Iona is overlaid with these principles where after every lesson a reflection and debrief is written by every girl to reinforce the new learning.

By the end of the meeting Julie Mernaugh was well impressed by the new direction of the program and by program’s end the satisfaction of the outcomes was now transferred into the beaming faces of each girl as they received their certificate of success from the Sports Challenge coaches.

ith the wonderful support of the St George Foundation Sports Challenge is again reaching

the needy students of Sarah redfern high in Minto and Sackville Primary in Ingelburn, nSW.

under the leadership of Program’s Coordinator Sydney nusbaum, 800m runner Chris deBoer, Melbourne Symphony orchestra Violinist Garry Laun and retired athlete Libby Allen students from these two schools experienced vastly different programs highlighting the versatility of Sports Challenge.

Sarah redfern identified a group of students who needed enhanced life skills,

improved resilience and to build aspirations for the future. Along came Sydney and her team to deliver a “remarkable and energizing program” as Tim Bordado school coordinator commented. “Sports Challenge has motivated and engaged these students in such a way that their improved skills in all areas, gives great hope for the future”.

Coordinator Sydney nesbaum concurs with Tim “These are great kids who thrive with our hands on activities and in partnership with the efforts of the school have seen improved determination in their eyes and attitude”.

“Go Sackville” was the cry from one student as she encouraged fellow school mates as they completed their 12 minute run. This encouragement and energy was felt by the Sports Challenge team throughout the fitness testing program of all students from year three and year six at Sackville Primary.

new Principal neil robertson explains, “We have a committed staff here and with my connections with successful programs at my other schools with Sports Challenge, I thought establishing some base line data in fitness and skill would enhance the children’s health,

learning and lift the bar for all”.What an impact the Sports Challenge team

had. Students were even ‘googling’ the seven item fitness test called the Physical Quoteent (PQ) on the internet to see what was required in each test so they were ready for action on the testing day. As 800m Olympic hopeful Chris deBoer explains, “These kids were so motivated and determined I think we will see more great results emerging for future sports aspirants”.

With the support of the St George Foundation all students will receive a report card comparing their own results by age and gender, with the school average and the national average which we hope will be the lever for improved exercise patterns.

eter Williams has been known to back a winner or two in his time. With a long

association with Sports Challenge though his daughter Janine as a coach, he jumped at the opportunity to help back the Mornington Peninsula’s Somerville Primary

in their innovative ‘Think Fit’ with Sports Challenge program.

School Principal Sue Goodall and former Sports Challenge Manager Camilla Milburn, along with coach Brendan Webb and Sean doherty, delivered a daily PE program to improve health and fitness. using the Sports Challenge world-first measure of fitness and skill, called the Physical Quotient (PQ), to measure pre and post the program, along with a dedicated staff, Somerville students successfully improved not only their fitness but also their attitude to exercise.

To help the students reach their goals, Williams got right behind the program by providing t-shirts, caps and vests for all participants. “To see those beaming faces when they received their kit was all the

motivation I needed to meet the cost. Sports Challenge does so much for the kids, it is my small way of helping out,” he said.

Principal Goodall was equally impressed. “Providing a uniform to use for exercise is just the tonic our children really needed to give this program a go and I am thrilled that Sports Challenge linked us up with the Williams family to enable us to achieve so well.”

PQ testing – Fitness and Skill

This ‘world-first’ measurement of fitness

and skill has been

growing execptionally as schools realsise the importance of monitoring standards in physical activity.

Testing is suppplemented with age-specific programs in fitness, ball skills, educational gymnastics, dance and sports.

LeadershipIn such turbulant and changing times, new and innovative leadership skills are required by our young people.

Our new mentoring leadership programs are designed to expose potential leaders to hands-on experiences to develop that potential, using ‘benchmarked’ activities.

Professional development in schools and communitiesdealing with change, innovative strategies for the classroom, collegiate development,

wellness and futures are delivered in half and whole day programs by our trained professionals.

Emotional IntelligenceEmotional Intelligence (EI) is becoming increasingly relevant to schools in the holistic development of their students. This is because the principles of EI provide a new way to understand and assess students: behaviours, attitudes, interpersonal skills (empathy) and potential.

how often do we meet students and people who are academically brilliant and yet socially and inter-personally inept?

To this end, Sports Challenge Australia has established:> A ‘world first’ measure of EI> An Experiential Mentoring Program to address the skills needed for good EI.

Ping Yi Secondary was first cab off the rank this year with skill testing of all sec one students used the Physical Quateent (PQ) measure to set the parameters of the PE program over the whole year and to identify students with the skill needed to succeed in the various CCA sports. As Mr Azlan hod Pe explained, “Sports Challenge PQ data is fantastic as it is hierachically ranked for boys and girls, along with individual reports which is helpful for our PE program, it is now objective and targeted.

Over a St Joseph’s Institution Junior Boys school Sundarum (hod Pastoral Care) and

Ben Yeo (Pastoral Care) are focusing when reaching the most needy students along with their potential leaders. Led by Siobahn Birmingham and coaches Cam Watkins, Jullian Walton and Catherine Charnley. The targeted students completed outstanding programs. Ben Yeo summed up the impact “Sport Challenge delivers high class data and the focus of our programs has been excellent with feedback from all boys outstanding”.

Finally to Mrs Getha hod Pastoral Care at Chij Tou Payoh where the data is in (SE) is used throughout the school by teachers to ensure every student is given an opportunity to fulfill their potential. Further Sports Challenge delivered a successful leadership program where parents and teachers alike commented upon the positive changes in the girls at home and in their attitude

to their school work. These successful and enduring partnerships

are best summarised by Mrs Yeo a teacher when she said, “I have been teaching for 20 years and I have seen no other program that has all the components that Sports Challenge offers, from data to programs and most importantly how our students respond so positively to the coaches… thank you for coming to Singapore”.

hen State Manager Sandy Mammo received a memo in 2008 from Medicare Australia’s

head office outlining the new values for all staff around Australia, she knew she was already ahead of the game with her staff.

Earlier in 2007 through her Senior Management Team and with ACC facilitation, all 300 plus WA staff had been involved in developing a set of authentic values for Western Australia with developed ownership. Sandy knew if staff felt they owned the values they aspired for, and then the work with the WA public would have improved outcomes.

In 2008 the new Australian Values did not pose any problems for WA as the statements

cascaded beautifully into the already established ones. All that was needed was an induction and a marring of the two. In came Jonathan Woolfrey human resources with the task of organising 27 workshop sessions to be led by Garry Tester and Sydney nusbaum from ACC in ensuring all staff had a clear understanding of what behaviors were required under the new values.

The workshops ran over several months were a delight as the interaction in teams of around 15 staff were outstanding. Staff could speak freely and discuss how they were going to implement the values and induct new staff.

As Sydney from ACC explained, “It was so refreshing to see the Medicare staff valued

by their Management team to be empowered to make these values work for them and their clients”.

avid Collins, Principal dealer of the Audi Centre Perth, knows what it takes to be number one in

the luxury car market. A veteran of the industry with an impeccable record in the Perth market meant the challenge of owning his own dealership everything was on the line.

After three years and a partnership with ACC in providing professional development and training the Audi Centre Perth recorded the number one spot for car sales for the first

time. As david explained, “To maintain this growth and to make sure our customers keep coming back we need to make their experience professional, seamless and with a sense of humility. To this end in 2008 david asked ACC CEO Garry Tester to develop a charter for the Audi Centre Perth which reflected ‘Best Practice’. To allow ownership of the charter all staff were involved in workshops to hammer out a charter which had aspirations for staff and inspiration for customers. The hard slog of the charter was combined with the motivation of the experimental activities aimed at galvanizing the team approach.

ACC’s Garry Tester was thrilled with the final outcomes of the charter where he said, “What I like about this charter is both the Aspirational aspects for the staff to achieve and with the inspiration the charter will provide to customers to deal with a truly professional unit.” This hasn’t been done by any other dealership before and will allow Audi Perth to be the ‘bench mark’.

pecial Programs Organization (SPO) AnZAC class ships director Chris Eggleton holds

the importance of team work as one of his key performance indicators as paramount. The 300 strong SPO staff maintain and upgrade the front line AnZAC ships of the Australian navy to be one of the best front line operations in the world.

To ensure the team work, which is vital at sea is maintained on land takes an

enormous amount of planning and persistence to ensure high level collegiate spirit to maintain outputs. With a mixture of intrinisically motivated men and women working in a highly charged environment, work/life balance is essential for all.

As Chris explains, “We need our people to enjoy the work place we have all created which is always in a state of ebb and flow, there are great people with high expectations.”

Australian Corporate Challenge has become part of the AnZAC SPO family through CEO Garry Tester facilitating the change process, leadership and management training and most importantly his mentors involved in running ‘leading edge’ team building exercises to extend the envelope of all staff.

The last major exercise involved African drumming for team work and a simulation

game called Go Go Island to enhance planning, budgeting, forecasting and risk management.

As Manager roger Puttman said, “We are all time poor, but once we get involved with these great activities, we all enjoy each others company a lot more.”

he new Western Power Alliance is a multi million dollar infrastructure alliance between Western Power,

Tenix and downer EdI, is off and running at a lightning pace. After just 12 months of frenetic strategy planning led by Alliance manager Andy Wood the new structure is being massaged forward.

To bring these three organisations together to form a new ‘alliance culture’ in such a short time meant developing new ‘alliance behaviours’ for an up and running roll out.

With the experience of Australian Corporate Challenge and CEO Garry Tester’s successful alliance work in both Victoria and Western

Australia their engagement to fast track employee induction was critical.

To allow the blue collar worker a real understanding of the issues and behaviors required for a successful alliance culture the work of dr Spencer Johnson Who Moved My Cheese? was used as the overarching statements to allow a simple story of two mice to convey a very serious message. Leave our old culture, values and behaviors behind as you are now working in a new alliance with new expectations.

All staff had a fantastic team building day at Willow Pond in WA where they received their own copy of Who Moved My Cheese? and a mandate of rapid change needed for changed behaviours.

The two central figures in the Cheese

story were Sniff and Scurry where one mouse was afraid of change and was left behind. Where as the other mouse Scurry embraced change and enjoyed the challenges that went with change.

The words left by Scurry on the wall of their shared maze is now the Challenge for the WA Power Alliance.
