Drive-Thru Events Bring Our Community Together!
Thanks to All Who Came Out and Joined In
On Thursday, September 17 and Friday, September 18 the Temple Israel parking lot was once
again full of activity, all while staying safe and social distancing. Many came out to take part in the
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur drive-thru event. We had so much fun seeing everyone and
re-connecting we did it again on Friday, October 9 to celebrate Sukkot and Simchat Torah.

With fall holidays in the rear-view
mirror and Thanksgiving only a few
weeks ahead, it is the perfect time to
reflect on the things in our lives for
which we are grateful, including all
added meaning to these unusual High
Holy Days.
Thank you to all who shared your
talents, voices, and friendly faces. I
loved seeing you virtually through our
services and in your cars at our drive-
thru events.
Thank you to those who built our
streaming Beit Tefillah, which gave
space to bring new life to our ancient
traditions. Thank you to the creative
teams of the Imprint Group DMC for
their masterful work on producing
our services and to The Ohlmann
Group for their spectacular Welcome
Video.
Thank you to Monika Shroyer and
Beth Styles for the incredible audio
work that brought the beautiful
sounds of our choir into our homes.
Thank you to those members of the
choir and to Joshua Halpern for a
memorable Kol Nidre. I’d like to give
a shout out to Andy Snow, as well, for
his generosity of time and expertise.
Thank you to our Temple Israel
senior staff team and to our incredible
families that have supported us. Rabbi
Tina Sobo, Courtney Cummings,
Grant Halasz, and Suzanne Shaw –
none of this could ever have
happened without your talents and
gifts. Nobody could imagine just how
large of a task this has been. Thank
you also to our support staff – Ellen
Finke-McCarthy, Annette Stogdill, and
Scott Francis. You especially helped
us bring the holidays to life with our
special drive-thru events.
Together, we have created an
enormous amount of meaningful
content that is still available for you to
enjoy. If you have not yet watched our
Welcome Video, please take a few
minutes to share in our joy of this
season with the special greetings of our
community members at https://
services.tidayton.org. If you did not
watch the supplemental Torah and
Haftarah readings and translations,
please do so. How wonderful it is to
see so many familiar faces. Be sure to
also take a moment to listen to the
Yom Kippur Afternoon Haftarah
translation of Jonah, by Saul and
Nathan Caplan. It is fantastic and no
Yom Kippur feels complete without
that story.
Also available is our healing service
from Yom Kippur afternoon, our
sermons from both holidays, and the
special musical productions by the
choir and Joshua Halpern.
Additionally, for those who missed the
afternoon session with Eric Ward, who
spoke about Antisemitism and Racism,
you may still watch that session by
going to https://
www.fairmounttemple.org/worship/live
-stream/, clicking on the Mandel
Sactuary Live Stream, and searching
through the “previous” programs.
With full hearts we turn again to the
future. Thank you all for your
partnership in reaching this moment in
time.

Comparing Jewish Resources on the
Genealogy Giants
A Zoom presentation, Sunday, November 8, 10:00 a.m.
Each of the giant genealogy websites — Ancestry, FamilySearch, Findmypast,
MyHeritage, and JewishGen — offers unique tools and/or record collections
relevant to researching Jewish ancestry. Ellen Shindelman Kowitt and Sunny Jane
Morton will give us a comparative overview of the Jewish resources across all of
these sites and tips on when searching one of them over another might be
advantageous, including an examination of JewishGen data found on Ancestry.
Presented by Miami Valley Jewish Genealogy & History, Beth Abraham
Synagogue Men’s Club Speaker Series, and Temple Israel’s Ryterband Lecture
Series. Support for this event is provided in memory of Marcia Jaffe.
Free. Register at https://jewishdayton.org/event/comparing-jewish-resources-on-

Global Day of
Jewish Learning
Temple Israel's Religious School will
once again participate in the Global
Day of Jewish Learning on
November 8. This years theme
centers around Human Dignity.
Although we cannot join with our
community partners in person on that
day, we join in spirit. Students will
have a shortened virtual session in the
morning and families are asked to
come to Temple for a Drive-Thru
activity related to Human Dignity,
materials for a family project
sponsored by PJ Library, and some
hot chocolate or coffee to keep you
warm!
*This drive-thru will also serve as the
opportunity to pick-up religious
school class materials for November
and December sessions for all
students.
**Feel free to bring a folding chair and
sip your hot beverage socially distant
while saying hi to some friends, if you
are comfortable doing so.

Saying Farewell to
Bernadette
For the last few years,
if you attended
Shabbat services on
Friday night, you likely
had the pleasure of
seeing and hearing
Bernadette O’Connor
play the piano. Her
musical talent and
sunny personality
always added such
light to our services,
and we have been grateful to have her
as a part of the Temple Israel family.
Sadly for us, Bernadette has decided
to relocate to Tennessee to be closer
to her family and to pursue some new
musical adventures. We will miss her
terribly, but we wish her nothing but
success and happiness in her new
home, and know that we will see and
hear her play again sometime in the
future. L’hitraot!
