Ghapter 5 * $ignals and Signs 89
solid, yellow lines are used as left-edge lines ondivided higfrways. If you see the tevetse, you aretraveling in the wrong direction-
On certain multi-lane highways, a specialcenter lane is reserved exclusively for two-.way lefttummoverrents inboth directiors. The two-wayleft tum lane must notbe used for passing anothervehide or for the purpose of merging into traffic. The marking for this type of lane is shownby thediagram below.
/ \
,.^
White and yellow pavement "markers" arereflective devices used in the pavement toimprove the visibility of marking lines at nightwhen the road is wet. Red markers indicatewrong-way movements for motorists.
"Traffie OffficersUnder special circumstances, an officer may
be directing the flow of traffic. If so, obey the offi-cels hand signals instead of the normal trafficsignals or signs. Most traffic officers signal driv-ers to stop by holding up one hand with the palmfacing the vehide and giving a long blast on thewhistle. The officer signals drivers to stalt or tokeep moving by motioning with the hand andglving a series of short blasts on the whistle. Atnigh! the traffic officer may signal by using aftashlight.

92 Ghapter 6 - Sharing the Road
Ghapter S
$]raring the RtradOur streets and highways are becoming
more crowded every day. Therefore, it is neces-sary that you, as a driver or pedestrian, knowand practice the rules of the road. You shouldalways be aware of the traffic around you andbeprepared for errrergerrcy situatioru.
BicyclesBicycle tidi.g is an important means of
iransportatiort particular$ for traveling to andfrom work and school. Because bicvcles are vehi-cles, bicyclists must obey the same haffic laws asother drivers.
Bicyclists usually ride on the right.side ofthe lane. but are entitled to the use of a full lane.
Fass l,5i*h o,areA bicyclist staying to the right in their lane
is accommodating the following drivers by mak-ing it easier to see when it is safe to pass, andeasier to execute the pass. Drivers wishing topass a bicyclist may do so only when there isabundant clearance and no oncoming traffic is inthe opposing lane. When passing a biryclist, always remember the bicyclist is entitled to theuse of the fu1l lane.
&a With The FlowIt is especially important for biryclists to
Go With The Flow, NOT against the flow. Rideright with the traffic, NOT facing traffic.Motorists often do not look in the direction ofbicyclists riding the wrong way.
