1.3 Charging the BatteryNew batteries are not charged when shipped. Be ore you start usingyour phone, you need to install and charge the battery. Some batteriesper orm best a ter several ull charge/discharge cycles.

To charge the battery1. Connect the USB connector o the Charging Cable to the sync

connector on the bottom o your phone.

2. Connect the other end o the Charging Cable to the AC Charger.

3. Select the AC Charger plug adapter that is appropriate or yourlocale and insert it into the AC Charger.

Press and holdTo open the available options or an item (e.g. contact or link in a webpage), simply press and hold the item.

Swipe or slideTo swipe or slide means to quickly drag your inger vertically orhorizontally across the screen.

DragPress and hold your inger with some pressure be ore you start

to drag. While dragging, do not release your inger until you havereached the target position.

FlickFlicking the screen is similar to swiping, except that you need to swipeyour inger in light, quicker strokes. This inger gesture is always in

a vertical direction, such as when licking through the contacts ormessage list.

RotateFor most screens, you can automatically change the screenorientation rom portrait to landscape by turning the phone sideways.When entering text, you can turn the phone sideways to bring up abigger keyboard. Re er to Chapter 4 or more details.

PinchFor some applications, like Albums or Browser, you can pinch thescreen using 2 ingers ( or example, thumb and index ingers) to zoomin or zoom out when viewing a picture or a webpage.

Using the TrackballRoll or press the TRACKBALL to select or highlight items on thescreen. The TRACKBALL also lashes when you receive an incomingcall or a noti ication.

Setting up your phone for the first timeWhen you turn on your phone or the irst time, you will be givenoptions to let you quickly set up various accounts, such as GoogleAccount, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, Microso t ExchangeActiveSync, and other email accounts.

Notes You need to be connected to the Internet, using Wi-Fi or dataconnection, to set up accounts.

Setting up some o the accounts does not give you access to all theeatures o the application. For example, when you set up a Facebook

account, you will only be able to view your Facebook albums and

your riends albums. You can, however, download the Facebookapplication rom Android Market or use Browser to go to theFacebook website.

You do not need to set up all accounts to use the phone.1. You may be asked to choose the language you want to use, view

tutorials, or set up a Wi-Fi connection in the ollowing screens.Tap Next or Skip to go to the next screen.Note You will only be asked to set up a Wi-Fi connection i there is a

Wi-Fi connection available.

2. On the Set up accounts screen, choose which accounts you wantto set up. Tap Skip i you do not want to set up accounts.

To learn how to set up a Google Account, re er to Chapter 8.To learn how to set up an Exchange ActiveSync account andother email accounts, re er to Chapter 5.

5. Tap Finish to inish the setup process and return to the Homescreen.

Turning off the screen when not in useTo save battery power, the phone automatically turns o the screen

when you leave it idle a ter a certain period o time. You will still beable to receive messages and calls while the phones screen is o .

You can also turn o the screen by pressing END/POWER . PressingEND/POWER or incoming calls will turn on the phone screen and

space for adding icons, widgets, andmore. Press HOME, then slide yourfinger horizontally across the screento go to the left or right side of theextended Home screen. There are 6additional screens apart from themain Home screen.

2.1 Making CallsThere are several convenient methods to make a call rom your phone.

Calling using the phone dialer screenYou can either dial a number directly, or youcan use the Smart Dial eature to search andcall a contact in People or a number rom orCall History.

When you enter the irst letter o the nameor number o a contact, Smart Dial searchesor contact phone numbers and the irst

character o a contact name as well as romthe character that appears a ter a space, dash,or underscore in a contact name. As you entermore letters or numbers, the list shows onlythe corresponding matches.

When a call is in progress, pressMENU to open the call options.Tap the available buttons on thecall options menu to put a callon hold, dial another contact fora phone conference, mute thephone microphone, and more.Note When the phone is dialing,

1. Press CALL > MENU, and then tap Call history .

2. Press and hold the received call that you want to save to yourcontacts list, and then tap Save to contacts .

3. In the blank contact record that appears, enter the contact nameand other in ormation. The phone number is automatically addedto the Mobile ield in the Number section. To store it as anothertype o number, or example a home number, tap the Mobile button.

4. Scroll down the screen and tap Save .

Checking a missed callYou will see the missed call icon in the status bar when you miss acall.To check who the caller was, press CALL > MENU, and then tap Callhistory . Missed calls are indicated by the missed call icon ( ).

Tip You can also press and hold the status bar, and then slide your ingerdownward on the screen to open the Noti ications panel. The missedcall number and/or contact name is displayed.

Clearing the Call History listOn the Call History tab, do one o the ollowing:

To remove one name or number rom the list, press and hold thename or number, and then tap Delete from Call history .

To clear the entire list, press MENU and then tap Delete all .

3.1 About PeopleIn People , you can easily manage your communications with contacts

via phone, messaging, and email. You can also view updates on theirFacebook and Flickr accounts, as well as updating your own Facebookstatus.

I you are synchronizing contacts with your Google account, withyour PC, and/or with an Exchange Server, any contacts stored inthose accounts are displayed in People. For more in ormation on
