Preface

This Annual Report is our second one. It is to track our activities, initiatives and successes during April 2006 to March 2007. This year has been

particularly encouraging and fruitful for IITK.

The number of alumni donors to IITK doubled from 295 in 2005-06 to 622 alumni in 2006-07. There has been a four-fold increase in this number in two

years from 142 alumni donors in 2004-05. Yet, 622 alumni donors are only about 3% of our total alumni. This is miniscule when compared to some of

the top engineering schools in the United States where 30% to 50% alumni may donate every year to their alma mater. The important thing here is the

engagement of alumni with their alma mater regardless of the amount of donation. To increase the involvement of alumni with the Institute, an

Alumni Contact Programme was started during the year wherein second and third year undergraduate students call the alumni, brief them about the

developments at the Institute and seek their participation through donations and otherwise.

The total amount of donation rose from 2.5 crore in 2005-06 to Rs. 5.4 crore in

2006-07. Most donations are meant and used for a specific purpose as per the

donor's wish. The endowment continues to yield good rate of return, and all

donation endowments were credited interest at the rate of 8.75% for the year

2006-07 as against 9.25% for the year 2005-06.

Eleven new chairs, seventeen new scholarships and several awards have been

instituted during the financial year. Partial travel support from the donations

enabled 71 students to participate in conferences overseas as compared to 43 last

year. During the year, a cash award for publishing journal papers was

introduced for the students through the donations: 204 students received a total

of Rs. 26.11 lakh under the Programme. Five new faculty members of the Institute

availed partial travel support from the donations for participation in conferences

overseas.

The alumni data base increased from about 55% alumni in April 2006 to about 63% in April 2007. However, a lot more remains to be done in order to

connect with all our alumni.

There is enormous potential to improve the quality of education and research at IITK with support and active engagement of our alumni. The

Institute is embarking on an ambitious plan towards this and invites each and every alumni and well wisher of IITK to come and join hands with us in

this endeavour.

SURGE—Summer UndergraduateResearch Grant for Excellence

Undergraduate research is a pedagogical tool that helps channelise the energy and

enthusiasm of students into conceptual-based education, thereby igniting their minds to

explore the world around them with curiousity. It can help students (a) bridge the gap

between class-room education and real world challenges, and learning the relevance of

the curriculum that they undergo at the Institute, and (b) internalize and take ownership

of the process of learning and education.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Grant for Excellence (SURGE), which started last year to develop a culture of UG research at IITK, supports

UG students to carry out 10 weeks of research on an independent project under the supervision of a faculty mentor. The program of summer 2006 was

highly successful and well-acclaimed. This year, the program has spread even further. The number of students from IIT Kanpur and NITs has more

than doubled. In summer of 2007, 20 students from IIT Kanpur and 33 from the NIT's will participate in the programme.

The student exchange program with California Institute of Technology (Caltech) was started last year. It was a very fruitful exchange as Caltech, with

its long tradition of UG research, provided advice and support to IITK for developing the programme. The arrangement with Caltech in 2006

continues and enables IITK students to conduct UG summer research at Caltech and Caltech students to work at IITK.

Another MOU was signed with Ecole Centrale, Paris this year. The MOU enables several IITK students to conduct UG research at Ecole Centrale

and Ecole Centrale students to work at IITK during summers.

Alumni Contact Programme

During the year, an Alumni Contact Programme was initiated wherein the undergraduate students call alumni on phone and brief them about the developments at IITK and seek their support and participation. A pilot programme in the summer of 2006 with five students showed good results, and the number of students in the programme was increased in stages which went upto about 40 in November 2006.

The initiative has been very well received both by the alumni and the students. It has enabled many alumni to reconnect with their alma mater, many have contributed financially small and large sums, and some have associated with IITK in a professional manner as a result of this programme. The students, besides earning some money, find it as an excellent opportunity to improve communication skills and leadership qualities.

Opportunity College

A pilot project named "Lakshya" was launched in December 2006 to help college educated, unemployed youth in and around the campus with a minimum of Bachelors degree to improve their skills to enable them become more marketable to a prospective employer. Considering the high rate of unemployment in the nearby villages the faculty and students at IIT Kanpur started this to improve the economic conditions of the people living around the campus. IITK students were employed on part-time basis. Besides earning money, the IITK students get a chance to gain teaching experience and get sensitized on social issues. This effort was given the name of “Opportunity College.”

A three-month free of cost, employment oriented training began in December and covered:

•English Reading

•English Writing

•Arithmetic and Accounting

•Computers Skills

Classes are held at the Opportunity School in the campus. The coursework is custom designed. There is one course advisor (faculty members) for each subject taught, who guides the instructors (students of IIT Kanpur) in course content and teaching methodology. In the first batch 27 trainees, 10 instructors and around 8 faculty members of the Institute were involved. Based on the success of the first batch, another batch is to start the program in May 2007.

During 2006-07 financial year, a total sum of Rs. 0.85 lakh was spent. This was covered through the donations of Mr. Ashok Roy (BT/ME/1991) and Mr. Gaurav Gupta (BT/CSE/2002).

Annual Gift Programme

Other Donations

During 2005-06 IITK started an Annual Gift Programme wherein alumni and friends of IITK contribute any amount, small or large, annually. Unlike huge donations from a few individuals which vary from year to year, small but steady contributions from a large number of donors ensures renewable support. The Programme enables IITK to support several initiatives towards excellence. During the year, about Rs. 49 lakhs were contributed by 441 donors. This compares well with Rs. 13 lakhs contributed by 120 donors during 2005-06. The amount raised through the Annual Gift Programme was utilized during 2006-07 as follows:

Rs. 12.50 lakhs. Rs. 1.55 lakhs.

Rs. 8.15 lakhs. Rs. 1.07 lakhs.

Rs. 0.56 lakhs. Rs. 5.76 lakhs.

The balance funds are being carried forward into the next financial year.
