Bio Blurb

Dr. R. Venkatesan has a long experience in the field of ocean and science technology for the past 32 years a d is currently working as Scientist G & Head-Ocean Observation Systems Group, National Institute of Ocean Technology Chennai. He is responsible for planning and coordination and implementation of ocean observation systems activities of NIOT. He is responsible for reestablishing Moored Buoy network in Indian waters and his working for sustinanace of this programme to provide real time met ocean and tsunami early warning data. He was successful in implementing indigenous development of data acquisition system for such ocean moored buoys. He also built expertise to design deep sea instrumented mooring systems. He is also responsible for successful development of Robofish an autonomous ocean observation vehicle. A state of the art moored buoy transmitting 106 parameters in real time was developed and installed in Arabian Sea.

His current success includes leading a team to establish ocean observatory near North Pole in Arctic. His work on materials for marine application s includes coastal, deep sea and Polar region. He enjoys working on

projects having direct relevance to the society such as real time data from moored buoys for cyclone and tsunami for coastal hazard warning, coastal cleanup campaign as a part of International coastal cleanup day and successfully executed societal programme to support livelihood of coastal fishermen. In the scientific front he has been working on behaviour of materials for marine applications for shallow and deep sea applications and has an international patent filed on eco-friendly anti-fouling paint under Indo-Bulgarian project. He is working with leading Universities in USA on a collaborative project to study monsoons in the Bay of Bengal He received his M. Tech from Karnataka Regional Engineering College and was awarded Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and to continue his academic pursuit to complete courses in Marine Environmental Pollution and Management and International Business Management from IIFT New Delhi.

Dr R Venkatesan has been working on the behaviour of materials for marine applications for shallow and deep sea applications up to 5000m depth. He was also responsible for an Indo-Bulgarian S&T project between NIOT and University of Chemical Technology, Sofia Bulgaria and filed a Patent. He had undertaken projects under Naval Research Board in association with IIT Madras. He also executed international collaborative project through Department of Science and Technology. He also completed project for UNDP Government of Thailand, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research BARC. He also executed projects Talchar Thermal power plant, Tanir bavi Thermal Power plant, Surya Chakra power plant Andaman for Industry. He was responsible for societal activities, to support livelihood of coastal fishers as an alternate employment by initiating projects such as on lobster and crab culture in sea cages and Fish Aggregation Devices in Tamilnadu, Orissa and Andaman.

He was PI for Coastal Ocean Pollution Monitoring Project and Drugs from Sea of Department of ocean Development now MoES. He has field experience on board Indian and Foreign Research Ships and boats for more than 1500 days.

He was nominated by Government of India, as a National Consultant for marine litter management activity under the South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP) Sri Lanka. He worked as a Regional Coordinator. South Asian Seas Programme, South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme Sri Lanka. He led mission to UN New York, UNEP Nairobi, International Coral Reef Initiative General Meeting at Monaco (2010) & Phuket (2009), GESAMP Bangkok, Regional Seas Meeting Bangkok. He is a receipt of Tamilnadu State Scientist award in 2006; NDRF Award Institution of Engineers (2009), MOSCOT National Award from Electrochemical Society of India, Indian Institute of Science Bangalore in 2007; best PhD award from NACE in 2002 constituted by Oil and Natural Gas Commission for his doctoral thesis. Recently National Research and Development Council Government of India announced Societal Innovation Award for the year 2013

He has to his credit 65 publications in referred national and international journals, Co-author of book by Springer Germany, ISmithers United Kingdom; Co-Editors of three conference proceedings. Reviewed PhD theses and reviewed manuscripts of reputed Journals. He guided 5 PhD scholars and 35 Post Graduate students for dissertation and has three patents to his credit and was in Doctoral committee for 15 students in different Universities. He was associated in initiating M Tech course in IIT Madras and is member of NIOT IIT Cell and Member of committee for Defense Institute of Advanced Studies He is instrumental in conceptualizing and executing national competition on Autonomous Underwater vehicle for College Students SAVe by NIOT, CII CMC Corrosion Awareness Video competition He has filed 3 patents and Co-authored two books on Marine and Industrial Biofouling by Springer Publications Germany and Polymers in marine environment iSmithers UK He has widely traveled to 32 countries. He organized many international and national conferences and workshops.

He christened a national capacity building exercise on student autonomous vehicle competition (SAVe) and is being organised by NIOT. Three national events were organised and winning team like IIT Kharagpur IIT madras Panimalar Institute Chennai were deputed to participate in International AUV Competition in USA. Today country is proud to have 9 AUVs designed by students

Dr R Venkatesan is elected to serve in many International committees including Vice Chair Asia for DBCP supported by UNESCO IOC and WMO; Chair for International Tsunameter Partnership and Chair on working group on Buoys. He is elected to be a steering committee member for Asia Pacific region of Global Ocean Observation System of UNESCO IOC; National Consultant for SACEP NORAD IMO Project appointed by Government of India

Recently nominated by Government of India to serve as national consultant for a project of International Maritime Organization UK on regional Oil spill contingency Plan with SACEP Colombo. He is also national focal point of international committee on Belmont forum representing India

He has special interest on Biomimics and his team has developed a Robofish mimicking fish to swim in waters His responsibility include Scientist In charge for Sea front facility and has enabled NIOT to acquire 211 acres of land abetting sea in Andhra Pradesh. He is working on diversified field of ocean science and technology and wishes to continue his endeavor to look at newer avenues and prefers to work in team
