Channels of Distribution It is a process of transferring the goods or material from one place to another through person. In hospitals the drugs or medicines are distributed from one place to another like:

Four systems for distribution of drugs:Individual prescription order Complete floor stock systemCombination of individual and floor stock systemUnit dose system

1.Individual prescription order system

Where the doctor writes the prescription for individual patient who obtained the drug from medical store and hospital dispensary.

2. Complete floor stock system

The drugs are given to patient through the nursing station.This system may be divided into:Charge floor stock systemNon charge floor stock system

Charge floor stock system

Medicines stocked on the nursing station at all times and charged to the patients account after they have been administered to them.

The patient have charged for each dose administered to him.

Non charged floor stock system

Medicines that are placed at the nursing station for the use of all patients on the floor.Drug distributed by two methods:Drug basket method Mobile dispensary method3.Combination of individual and floor stock system

This system followed in government as well as in private hospitals who run the basis of no profit no loss.

Requirement of drugs or medicines given to the patients who purchase and deposit these item in hospitals wards or rooms under supervision of registered nurse.

4.Unit dose dispensing

Those medicine which are ordered , packed, handled administered and charged in multiplies of single dose units containing a predetermined amount of drugs pr supply sufficient for one regular dose.A single unit package is one which contains one complete pharmaceutical dosage forms,Eg. One tablets and capsule

Drug distribution to out patient

No medication should be issued without the prescription.After the issuing, drug has been made in the quantities to be supplied.Medicines are given to the out patients from the pharmacy situated in the out patient department (OPD).

Drug distribution of controlled drugs

Doctor orders for administration of controlled drugsIn large hospitals dangerous drugs like opium ,morphine and pethidine are used for various purpose.Prescription for those drugs should contain:Patients full nameAddress Date Name and strength of drugQuantity of drugSign of prescriberDose and route of administration
