Drug: a substance which may have medical, intoxicating, performance enhancing or other effects when taken or put into a human body and is not considered a food.
Medicine: a drug that prevents or cures illness or eases its symptoms.
Drug Abuse: the use of a drug for nonmedical purposes.

1. Cannabis
Marijuana: a drug made from the hemp plant.
- usually smoked
- often the first illegal drug that teens use
- also called "pot" or "weed"
User feels:
- high
- zoned out
- relaxed muscles
- paranoia & anxiety
- red eyes, dry mouth
Effects of Marijuana UseImmediate Effects
- can't think or speak clearly
- difficulty paying attention
- loss of short-term memory
- slowed reaction time
- increased heart rate & appetite
- sadness or paranoia
Long-term Effects
- problems with normal body development in young users
- damage to lung tissue and immune cells
- feelings of anxiety and panic
- psychological dependence
2. Stimulants
Stimulants: drugs that speed up the body's functions. Also called "uppers"
Effects of all stimulants
- increased heart rate & breathing
- raises blood pressure
- alertness
- provides a false sense of energy and power
- after the effects wear off, the user feels exhausted
Cocaine
Cocaine: Illegal stimulant made from the coca plant. It can be inhaled, smoked or injected. Addiction can be quick.
Street Names: blow, snow, coke, crack
User feels:
- powerful and confident at first
- anxious and depressed later

Methamphetamines
Methamphetamines: powerful stimulant. It comes in clear crystals or powder.
Other names: meth, ice, crystal
Most meth in the US comes from "superlabs." It can also be made in small labs using inexpensive ingredients such as drain cleaner, battery acid and antifreeze.
Effects
- hyperactivity
- anorexia
- excessive sweating
- restlessness
- bruxism (grinding teeth)
- death
- euphoria
- anxiety
MDMA (Ecstasy)
MDMA: drug that produces strong feelings of comfort, empathy, and connection to others. It comes in tablet form and is consumed orally.
MDMA is also called ecstasy, X or molly. It is associated with underground rave parties and is considered a club drug.
Immediate Effects:
- mental stimulation
- general sense of well-being
- emotional warmth
- chills, nausea, sweating, bruxia
Long-term Effects:
- anxiety, agitation
- addiction
- seizures
- dehydration
- heart failure
- reduced mental capacity
Caffeine
Caffeine is a legal "upper."
Amphetamines
Amphetamines: strong stimulant drugs that speed up the nervous system. For this reason, they are commonly called "speed."
Short-term Effects:
- dilated pupils
- reduced appetite
Long-term Effects:
- hallucinations
- weight loss
- violent behavior
- tremors
3. Depressants
Depressants: drugs that slow down the body's functions and reactions, including heart and breathing rates.
- Also called "downers."
- Alcohol is a depressant.
Depressants can be prescribed to treat patients who have anxiety, muscle spasms or sleeplessness.
Effects:
- relaxation
- impairs coordination & judgement
- sleepiness
- depression
- coma or death
Barbituates: medical drugs that are used for anxiety and insomnia.
Tranquilizers: medical prescriptions; Examples: Valium and Xanax
GHB: Illegal in the US; the date-rape drug.
Dangers:
- addiction
- withdrawal can cause seizures or death
- death when taken with alcohol
4. Narcotics
Narcotics: drugs that relieve pain and dull the senses.
- highly addictive
- damages the lungs, liver, kidneys and brain
Heroin: illegal narcotic that is highly addictive

Immediate Effects:
- rush & warm feeling
- dry mouth
- heavy arms and legs
- drowsiness
- slurred speech

Long-term effects:
- collapsed veins
- infection of heart lining
- liver disease
- infection of lungs, liver, kidneys and brain
- withdrawal symptoms
Morphine: one of the most effective drugs known for pain relief.
Effects:
- suppression of pain
- inability to concentrate
- blurred vision
- addiction
Opium: depressant that can be smoked or injected.
Effects include:
- sedation
- relaxation
- feelings of warmth
- quick addiction
5. Hallucinogens
Hallucinogens: drugs that distort moods, thoughts and senses.
- users may become disoriented, less sensitive to pain, and violent
- users may lose control
Effects:
- see and feel and hear things that don't exist
- cannot communicate or think clearly
- rapid, intense mood swings
LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide)
LSD: an odorless, colorless chemical that comes from a fungus that grows on grains. It can also be made synthetically in labs
- most potent hallucinogen known to man
- Other names: Acid, tabs
- Usually taken orally, but sometimes inhaled or injected
Effects:
- usually lasts 10 hours
- nausea, goose bumps, sweating
- rapid heart rate
- hallucinations
- impaired depth and time perception, distorted perception
- "bad trip"
Dangers:
- impaired judgement
- there is no way to stop a "trip" once it starts
- flashbacks of a "trip" can occur days or months afterwards
- illegal in the US
Peyote (Mescaline)
Peyote: a small spineless cactus which contains the hallucinogen chemical Mescaline
Consumption: the top of the cactus has disc-shaped buttons. These are cut off, dried and chewed.
Effects:
- usually lasts 12 hours
- mental illness
Psilocybin (Mushrooms)
Psilocybin: chemical in certain mushrooms found in Mexico and Central America.
Consumption:
- eaten raw
- cooked in food
- brewed in tea
- dried and ingested
Effects:
- intense feelings
Dangers:
- often fake (edible mushrooms laced with LSD or toxic mushrooms)
- death
- stomach pains & diarrhea
- bad trips can be very scary
- illegal
PCP
PCP: invented in the 1950s as a medical anesthetic. It caused serious side effects of confusion and delirium and was discontinued.
- was also used as horse tranquilizer
Other names: Angel dust, rocket fuel
Consumption:
- ranges from a powder to a gummy mass
- orally take tablets or capsules
- powder
- liquid
Effects:
- numbness, slurred speech
- loss of coordination
- strength
- blank stare, rapid eye movement
- hallucinations
- violence, anxiety, schizophrenia
Dangers:
- one of the most dangerous drugs of abuse
- lack of coordination and exaggerated feelings of strength can cause the user to harm themselves or others
- addictive
6. Inhalants
Inhalants: diverse group of chemicals composed of organic solvents and volatile substances commonly found in common household products.
- Known as "sniffing," "snorting," or "huffing drugs.
- Other names: rush, bolt
Consumption: inhaled directly or sniffed from a rag soaked in the substance.
These substances enter the brain so rapidly that the intensity is similar to injection of other drugs.
Effects:
- drunk
- stimulation then depression
- distorted time and space
- headache
- nausea and vominting
- loss of coordination
Dangers:
- Sudden sniffing death syndrome: you can die, the 1st or 100th time you use inhalants
- heart failure
- suffocation
- brain, liver, kidney damage
- hearing loss
