Experience countsThe so-called “chipping” is the reduction process of ligneous material of various types and

shapes (logs, branches, sawmill waste, wood scrap, etc.), into small elements, by means of

a mechanical cutting action.

PEZZOLATO S.p.A. has thirty years of experience in the construction of machines for the pri-

mary conversion of wood.

PEZZOLATO’s know-how has become consolidated through time, by means of the collab-

oration of a network of specialised distributors worldwide that has allowed the technicians

to increasingly understand the requirements of industrial users, also in the chipping field.

In the two establishments (an area of 70,000 m2 of which 28,000 m2 are covered, with

more than 150 employees), the Company manages three production lines, among which

the “GREENLINE” that plans and designs the wide range of CE marked machines, PTH series

drum chippers in compliance with the machinery directory. H series disc chippers, PZ series

grinders for volume reduction as well as the Shredders.

These chippers, the smallest “GREENLINE”, have beendesigned most of all to obtain large volumes of good qualitychipped material destined to whoever burns biomass inplants used for the production of electrical and/or heat ener-gy and the industry that produces pressed board, withoutexcluding the use by the large screw feed heating plants. Chipping, also calibrated, therefore, for regularity and sharp-ness of the cut and the sieve that operates on the relevantgrid. The latter can be easily accessed and quickly disassem-

bled, in order to allow replacement when the size of thechipped material is to be modified. Particular technicalarrangements also allow the chippers in this series to workcontinuously for many hours without fatigue and onlyrequesting normal routine maintenance interventions. The rapid return of the investment allocated to a PEZZOLATOmachine is also assured in this case, by the proverbial robust-ness of the machines, performance and control components(easily accessible) with which each machine is equipped.

Here are the main features of Pezzolato “GREENLINE”, from which the solutions originated, of which someexamples of significant applications are given successively.

Drum chippers – PTH 480/660 and 700/660 series

FunctioningThe material to be chipped is placed on the hydraulical-ly-activated feeding belt, with closed link steel chain andspikes. The chain drags the material underneath the upper feedingroller, which is equipped with inverted-teeth that attack thematerial, easing its entry. The roller then compacts everything using the necessarypressure, in order to push the material against the action ofthe drum chipper (cf. the layout). The standard machine version has two knives on the drums,in opposite positions, which guarantee constant calibrationof the chip.For particular requirements, four knives can be mounted onthe drum in equidistant and alternating positions (cf. photo3 and 4). The power is transmitted to the drum by high resistance“power band” belts.The on-board controls are easily accessible (cf. photo 2); how-ever, it is possible to supply the machine with a radio control,in order to allow the operator to mange the main chipperfunctions at a distance.

The speed of the feeder chain and the upper roller are syn-

chronised and can move forwards or backwards, on control

of the operator. The entry speed of the material can be mod-

ified by the operator, if chip dimension must be changed.

The chips that exit from the calibration grid (cf. photo 7 and 8)

are transported, by a collection screw feed to the blades of a

fan that expels them outside by means of the discharge con-

veyor (cf. the machine layout).

Protection devices All PTH series chippers have the well-known “no stress” device

that stops and inverts the direction of movement of the feed-

ing system of the material to be chipped, if there is exces-

sive power absorption by the motor. The “no stress” automat-

ically re-starts the feeding system, as soon as power absorp-

tion returns to normal.

All chippers in this series can have a reversible fan protection

device (optional) that allows to clean the radiator.

Knife replacement is made easier by the opening above the drum chipper hood. Machine control devices are protected by easily accessible covers,making routine maintenance operations easier.

Sifting grid for chipped material, in the standard version and in the square-hole version, mounted in order to obtain fine feed calibration. The grid is realised in material that is resistant to wear and is easily accessible in order to allow quick mounting/dismounting.

PTH 900/1400This chipper – one of the largest realised in Europe - for exam-ple, has been constructed by PEZZOLATO S.p.A. for the Swissco-operative Sodefor, which required very high production,without renouncing the quality of the chipped material.Mounted on the truck bed of four-axle lorry; served by ahydraulic loader; equipped with a mobile control unit, thePTH 900/1400 is activated by a 1000 HP industrial MANdiesel engine.

The strong chipping chamber receives the material to bechipped through the two lower notched rollers and an upperinverted-tooth roller. The latter eases the introduction of anytype of wood, thanks to a torque of 500 kgm.The pipe, centrifuge and discharge conveyor are built in high-tensile steel: the entire chipping expeller system can turn ina radial manner by 70°, with respect to the rotor axis, to directthe chipped material also into underground silos.

“CUSTOM” CHIPPERS – PTH 900/1400 e 1400/1000The know-how gained by Pezzolato S.p.A. in the chipping field has recalled the interest of heavy users. Two qualified references confirm it.

PTH 1400/1000This machine was realised for Vibo Legno, pursuing the objec-tive of allowing both chipping of large diameter logs and thatof bundles of cumbersome material with various formats,assuring the best performance in every situations.The chipper unit – can be transported on a lorry – has beenhas been built on a centre bearing mounted on a frame withfour hydraulic, telescopic feet.

The chipper has a 904 HP CATERPILLAR engine that drivesa drum with the diameter measuring 1000 mm and 1400mm in width. Average hourly production of the machineexceeds 300 m3.The chipped material expeller system in the PTH 900/1400has been realised to direct discharge in any direction.

The accessibility simplifies the maintenance operations. The chipped material expulsion system, PTH 900/1400, has been realised to orientate dischargein any direction.

The rangePezzolato PTH series drum chippers, distinguish themselvesfor the capacity of realising an hourly production of chippedmaterial that goes from 20 to 150 m3 and even beyond, whentalking about “custom” machines. This is mainly in order to obtain large volumes destined to

industry that burns biomass in plants used for the produc-tion of electrical and/or heat energy and the industry thatproduces pressed board. The smallest machines in the seriesare also qualified to produce calibrated chipped material tobe burned in screw feed heating plants.

Starting from the larger models (diameter of drum chipper), here are some realisations.

DRUM CHIPPERS - PTH Series

PTH 1000/1000It is particularly indicated for forestry industries and for “con-tractors” that must realise high production without renounc-ing the quality of the chipped product.

The standard version is driver by a 430 HP IVECO engine ora 590 HP SCANIA engine with dry clutch. The engine has areversible fan for cleaning of the radiator.

PTH 1000/1000 at work with short material. An extension can be con-nected to the standard hopper. Hydraulically raised, it eases introduc-tion of the material by making it slide onto the chain.

Here is a static solution of the PTH 1000/1000 with hydraulically-lifted sta-biliser feet. With this layout the machine can be easily loaded onto suit-able means of transport.

PTH 1000/1000 can fill a 350 quintal container, in less than an hour. PTH in the sliding version.

PTH 900/820 at work with different sized logs. The operation is madeeasier by the fact that the operator can raise the upper feeding roller,by activating the controls positioned on the crane, or using the radiocontrol.

PTH 900/820This is the medium/large model in the series. The feeder –structured equipment to allow loading of material usingmechanical means – is particularly adapt for chipping largevolumes of wood(logs, branches, sawmill waste, etc.), as ithas an entry hopper that measures 900 mm and width and500 mm in height.

The feeding chain of the material to be chipped can behydraulically tilted for transport. A lower roller (in addition tothe upper roller) favours the working of small pieces and car-pentry waste.The machine can be activated by an autonomous engine orby power take-off from a tractor.

PTH 480/660 – PTH 700/660 – PTH 900/660They are the medium/small models in the PEZZOLATOchipper range. The diameter of the chipper drum measures660 mm. They are driven by the power take-off from thetractor or by an autonomous engine (diesel or electric).

The chippers driver by power take-off cardan can use aloader with log grippers mounted directly on the drawbar,using the same hydraulic plant as the chipper; or usinghydraulic controls installed in the tractor cab.

PTH 900/660 at work with bundles of logs and branches with different diameters. The operation is made simpler by the fact that the operator can acton the controls positioned on the loader (or with the radio control) in order to lift the upper feeder roller, in a way to ease loading of large volumes.

PTH 900/660 at work with sawmill waste. Themachine can be equipped with an addition-al, lower hydraulic roller in order to ease load-ing of the material.

PTH 900/660 at work with branchwood. Evenwhen this chipper works with low value mate-rial it can produce calibrated chipped materi-al of optimal quality.

PTH series chippers can be driven by an electric engine. The stat-ic version, particularly adapt in sawmills for chipping the wastecan be set up with “ad hoc” service automations (vibro-convey-ors, discharge belts with pallets, iron removal systems, etc.), so

allowing to introduce the chipper, for example, into a pellet pro-duction line. The compactness and the strength of the machine,together with the low energy consumption assured by the elec-tric engine, make the chipper ideal for continuous cycles.
