Your alma mater is 57 years old now and has seen many changes over this long period. The old equipment gifted by UNICEF in 1960 and installed in STD are still working, but the manpower has changed. The faculty is almost new with only few old face of eighties like me, Dr Bhadania, Dr JP Prajapati, Dr Aparnathi, Dr Jana. We are dynamic and have changed over time in many respects. The syllabus has been revised several times and we will be implementing the lasts revision of course curricula as per the recommendation of 5th Dean’s committee formulated by Indian Council of Agricultural Research. We have world class infrastructure facilities including Anubhav dairy, Vidya dairy, hostels, classrooms, upgraded laboratories, all equipment and instruments for high tech research and so on. During sixties, we were admitting only 20 students every year, which increased to 40 for many years and at present we have admission capacity of 65. This includes 43 normal seats, 7 from ICAR and 15 payment seats. Entire admission process is online and we admit students based on merit of 12th science and JEE score. The number of applicants is in thousands and SMC is still a number one preferred college for seeking admission. We still maintain a record of 100% placement. However, as the number of girl students is increasing, we are finding some problems for placement. Looking to our infrastructure facilities, faculty strength, alumni profile and placement record, we are not less than an IIT,IIM or any other national institute. Friends, let us come to gather and strengthen our alumni association and our college. We already have alumni chapters in Gulf, USA and Canada. This year, we opened a chapter in Europe too. Apart from these, alumni of different batches organize get-to- gather. Last year, there was a grand alumni meet of 1981-85 batch in Jaipur. This shows our family strength. Our unique activity of biannual alumni convention and honoring of silver jubilee batch continues since last 25 years. We will have our 12th Alumni convention during 4-5 February 2017, where we will honour the pass out students of 1991 and 1992, apart from some distinguished alumni. From the Patron...Your alma mater is 57 years old now and has seen many changes over this long period. The old equipment gifted by UNICEF in 1960 and installed in STD are still working, but the manpower has changed. The faculty is almost new with only few old face of eighties like me, Dr Bhadania, Dr JP Prajapati, Dr Aparnathi, Dr Jana. We are dynamic and have changed over time in many respects. Alumni Association ActivitiesFarewell Function of outgoing batch of B. Tech (DT)

The outgoing batch of B. Tech (DT) was bid farewell on 14th April, 2016. Dr. A. G. Bhadania, President, Alumni Association welcomed all the students, faculty and guests. He made an appeal to the outgoing students to be in contact with their almamatereven after completion of their study. Dr. J. B. Prajapati, Patron, Alumni Association delivered motivational speech to strengthen the alumni bonding. On the occasion a certificate of life membership of alumni association of SMC College of Dairy Science, was distributed to all students. Mr. Istiyakhusen Chauhan, Secretary, Alumni association was the cocordinator of the function. Dr. Satish Parmar, SRC Chairman, Mr. Raj Patel, Vidya Dairy training In-charge and Mr. Chetan Dharaiya, NSS coordinator, also delivered speech and blessed the outgoing batch. The function ended with proposal of vote of thanks by theSecretary.

Door step seminar at Sumul Dairy, Surat

A door step seminar was organized at Sumul dairy, Surat on 16th April, 2016. Dr. Atanu Jana delivered a lecture on “Butter Technology: Manufacture and quality aspects” and Dr.

Sreeja V. talked on “Technology of probiotic butter milk”. In the beginning, Shri Jayesh Desai, MD, Sumul Dairy welcome all the guests, including Dr JB Prajapati, Principal of the college. About 50 officers of Sumul dairy participated in the program.

Alumni Association, Europe Chapter formed

On June 4, 2016, a formal meeting of alumni residing in Europe was called at Canway Island, London. Total 11 alumni families residing near London remained present, while other 12 were in contact by email. Dr Baboo Nair (IDD first batch, 1962) settled in Sweden was also present with his wife. Dr JB Prajapati, Patron of the Association also attended the meeting. This was the second get-to-gather in London and this time a formal resolution was passed to establish the chapter. The objective and committee was approved in the meeting as under:

Objectives:

1. To establish a platform to coordinate and connect alumni working in Europe in general.

2. To organize activities and meeting in Europe for social bonding and helping the alumni.

3. To communicate and support Alumni Association’s activities and events at SMC College of Dairy Science.

4. To represent Alumni Association at parent institution.5. Any other activities or events or project that enhances

bond between individuals and Alumni Association at Anand.

6. Any activities that motivate and support students of college, that include sponsoring activities, sharing knowledge and idea, commercial projects.

Present working committee comprises of Mr Rasik Patel (Chairman), Mr. Vajsi Borkhatriya (Secretary), Pritesh Shan (Financial Secretary), Mr. Pranav Shahand Vivek Upadhayay (Europe Co-ordinators).

SMC Alumni meet at DIC, NDRI, Karnal

Several alumni attended 44th Dairy Industry Conference at NDRI, Karnal during 18-20 Feb 2016. About 20 alumni had an informal meeting after dinner on 19th Feb that brought memories of SMC back and also had technical discussions with Dr J S Punjarath. Mr Shahi Jahan Vani working at Model Dairy Karnal coordinated the activity.

Mini Alumni convention in Toranto

Dr HK Desai, B.Sc. (DT) 1979 and presently General Manager of Amul Dairy visited US and Canada in April 2016. A mini alumni convention of the alumni working around Toranto was organized followed by dinner which was attended by more than 10 families.

SMC Alumni meet at Jaipur

A total of 26 alumni of 1981-85 pass out batches along with their families had a get together at Gold Palace Resort, Jaipur on January 23-24, 2016. Alumni came from places such as Dubai, Assam, Delhi, Bhilai, Bhopal, Himachal, Ahmedabad and Jaipur. All are serving in varied sectors such as government, cooperative and private. They had great fun remembering the good old college days they spent at SMC College of Dairy Science.

Mr. Krunal Chauhan, an alumnus of 2009 batch, worked in ALMARAI and Banas dairy for three years.He then did hismaster of design from National Institute of Design as well as M.B.A (Marketing) from NIMS university. He did his first project with DRDO (Defense Research Development Organization). He developed a human machine interface for next generation of sonar console. Mr. Chauhan also worked for ISRO where he proposed a design for handling scheme design for precision space camera during ground activities. He did a project with Crompton and Graves,AMC (clean India) and Invent India.Then he got an opportunity to work with SAMSUNG R&D Institute of India where he worked on emotional user experience and published research paper. Hardik Mehta (BTech, 2004) is an independent film maker. After his graduation he worked with advertising and then pursued his Masters in Mass Communications at the renowned AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Jammia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He has been an integral part of Phantom Films’ productions, Vikramaditya Motwane’s ‘Lootera’ (2013), VikasBahl’s‘Queen’ (2014) and ‘Shaandaar’ (2015) as a script supervisor and an Assistant Director.

His first short fiction film Skin Deep (2014) was released theatrically across India along with three other short films in

an anthology called ‘Chaar Cutting’. Amdavad Ma Famous (2015) is his first documentary Directed by Hardik. The film has traveled extensively at film festivals world over and has won several awards including the National Award for Best Non-Feature Film (2015). He is currently writing two feature films for Phantom Films and a feature screenplay of his own.Apart from this, he has received several awards from India and abroad.

I.M. Mansuri (B. Sc. (DT) 1978) is presently working as Chief General Manager with Modi Dairy, Bikaner since October 2014. Prior to this, he was working as DGM with Amul - Mehsana till July 2013.

Kirtikumar B. Dave (B. Sc. (DT) 1993) is working as Manager (Plant Operation and Quality Assurance) with Azam Dairy Products Ltd., TANZANIA since 2014. Before moving to Tanzania Mr. Dave was with Dudhsagar Dairy, Mehsana as Assistant Manager (QA) and work there from 1993 to May 2014.

Sudeep Jain (B. Tech., 2000) worked at Mother Dairy and Vidya Dairy for few years after completion of his graduation and then moved to USA to get masters in Food Science in 2002. Since past 9 years he is with Leprino Foods in Denver, USA and currently he is Senior Manager - Quality Assurance and Product Compliance.

Rahul Sharma (B. Tech., 2002)after completion of his graduationpursued his Master Degree from CFTRI, Mysore and PhD from UCC, Ireland. Currently he is working as Research Scientist, ABP FOOD GROUP, ARDEE, IRELAND.

Sanket Agarkar (B. Tech., 2006) pursued his MBA in Marketing & International Business from Jaipur after completion of his Graduation. Currently he is employed as Business Development Manager - Technical Service (Dairy & Beverage segment) for IMEA(India, Middle East and Africa) with ROQUETTE RIDDHI SIDDHI PVT LTD. (Fully owned by RoquetteFeres’ of France). He has played instrumental role in development of Glucono Delta Lactone market for Paneer.

JambuIndravadan (B. Tech., 2007) has joined PROVAS S.A.S., a France based company as Regional Sales Manager. Currently he is based at Bangaluru.

Nikunj Modi (B. Tech., 2008) joined IFFCO group Company,UAE through campus interview as Executive – Production. Since August 2011 he has joined Havmor Icecream Ltd. as Assistant Manager – Production. After successful performance he had been promoted to Dy.Managerand currently he is promoted as Manager - Production.

Pranshu Kulshrestha (B. Tech. 2008)is working as Application Group Assistant Manager for Infant Nutrition at Nestle, Samalkha Factory.

Vijay Joshi (B.Tech. 2008) is working with US Army as Food Inspector in the Department of Defense. His wife Hetal Joshi an Alumni of the same batch is working as Food Safety and

QA Manager with H Brooks, Minneapolis, USA.

Wridhhama Prasad (B. Tech. 2010), Gunvant Rathod (B. Tech., 2011) and Sanket Borad (B. Tech., 2011) have joined ICAR- National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal as Scientists in Division of Dairy Technology after clearing ARS.

Kesha Vankar (B. Tech. 2011) after completion of her graduation pursued M. Tech. (Dairy Engineering) from NDRI, Karnal. She then joined TetraPak as Process Engineer. Now she is pursuing MBA from IIM-Ahmedabad (Food and Agri Business Management).

Mr Rajkumar B Patel, (B. Tech. 2005) was working as Sr. Executive at Vidya Dairy and has now joined IIM-Ahmedabad (Food and Agri Business Management) for doing MBA.

Suresh N. Chaudhari (B. Tech. 2012) is working with Vadilalindustries Pvt. Ltd, Gandhinagar as Sr. Executive (Quality Assurance and R & D).

Tushar Joshi (B. Tech. 2001) is working as National Head - Technical & Supply Chain, Coca-Cola India, Gurgaon since 2010.

Girigalla Ramesh (M. Sc., 2010) is working with Reliance Retail Ltd. at Hyderabad as State Quality Head position.

College Currents…Dr J.B. Prajapati, Principal & Dean visited UK, Ireland, Sweden and Denmark

Dr.J.B. Prajapati was on tour to Europe during 2-13 June 2016. The main purpose was to (1) To meet alumni and form Alumni Association’s Europe chapter (2) To meet academicians, researchers and professionals to promote exchange of students and collaborative research work and (3) To promote SASNET-Fermented Foods network activities. He visited University College of Cork (UCC) on 3rd June and had discussions with the faculty for exchange of students and collaborative research work. He met Dr P F Fox, a stalwart in Dairy Chemistry and DrMcSweeney Paul, who have guided many of SMC graduates for PhD. He met Prof. Paul Ross, Head of UCC and Dr Alan Kelly, Professor at the School of Food and Nutritional Sciences, who showed common research interests.

Dr Prajapati visited the facilities at Moorepark, Ireland which has facilities of pilot dairy plants for research and development work. He then visited the facilities of M/s CP Ingredients, Limerick who makes flavours and other ingredients for dairy and food applications. Their cheese flavor looks very useful reducing ripening time of cheddar cheese and save money. The company has made an Indian counterpart named Adare Foods Pvt. Ltd, with one of our alumnus, Mr Kaushal Kothari, who has employed four of our graduates during this year’s placement.

In London, Dr Prajapati stayed with Mr Vajsi Borkhatariya and attended Alumni Associations Europe chapter formation meeting. Dr Prajapati was in Sweden from 7-12 June with Dr Baboo Nair. He attended several professional meetings to strengthen the activities of SASNET-Fermented Foods network. He had meeting with Dr Lars Eklund, Dy. Director, SASNET; Prof. Olle Holst, Prof of Biotechnology; Dr Jorgen Holm, CEO, Glucanova; Dr Rickard Oste, CEO, Aventure and so on. He made a presentation on Human microbiome and probiotic products at Functional food centre of Lund University.On 10th June, Dr Prajapati and Dr Baboo Nair visited Copenhagen University. Dr Richard Ispen explained about the activities of Food Science faculty and arranged a visit to Dairy Research facilities. He discussed about making an MOU with AAU for student exchange and collaborative research projects.

On 12th June, Dr Prajapati met two more alumni working in Copenhangen; Mr Pranav Shah (2003 B. Tech DT batch) working in SPX Flow Technology and Mr Sudip Bhattacharya (1996 B. Tech DT batch)working with Tech Mahindra, managing SAP solutions delivery in Scandinavian countries..

Dr. Atanu Jana, Professor and Head, Department of Dairy Technologywas conferred with Fellowship Award of National Academy of Dairy Sciences (India) – NADS(I) at the 4th Convocation function held at National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal on 6th April, 2016. The award was given by Dr. A.K. Srivastava, Director and Vice Chancellor, NDRI, Karnal.

Dr.Subrota Hati, Ms. Nikita Patel and Dr. JB Prajapati of Dairy Microbiology Department got the Best Poster Award (First Prize)on “Antioxidative activity, Beta-glucosidase activity and biotransformation of Isoflavones during fermentation in soy milk using potential Lactobacilli” presented in the International Conference on “Recent Advances in Food Processing and Biotechnology” organized by Centre of Food Science and Technology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi during April 05-06, 2016.

DBT funded Twining project-2015 is sanctioned in Dairy Microbiology Department, SMC College of Dairy Science, AAU, Anand on “Development of Technology for the preparation of Fermented Rice Beverage in Meghalaya and evaluation of its functional properties”with North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, Meghalaya. Dr. SubrotaHatiis the Principal Investigator of the project and and Dr. JB Prajapati is the Co-Principal Investigator.The project cost is Rs.1crore.

Dairy Business Management Department of SMC College of Dairy Science organized one day National Seminar on “Human Resource Management in Indian Dairy Sector” on 17th March, 2016, sponsored by ICAR. The event witnessed participation of 250 delegates from academia and dairy industries. Dr. J. B. Prajapati, Principal & Dean SMC College of Dairy Science, in his welcome address briefed about the 55 years of contribution made by college to Human resource in Dairy sector. The Guest of Honour of the function Dr. K. B. Kathiria, Director of Research and Dean P.G. Studies, Anand Agricultural University, Anand remarked that human resource management is very crucial in any sector. He also added that Anand being the hub to NDDB, GCMMF, AMUL, IRMA,

Vidya Dairy and SMC college of Dairy Science occupies a prominent place in India’s dairy Map. Shri Pankaj Shah, Managing Director, Baroda Dairy, the Chief Guest of the function recalled that earlier electricity, fuel and water were considered crucial component for an industry, but now time has come to focus more on human resource management, an inevitable component for any industry of present time. He stressed on the importance of proper rapport among managerial and different levels of work forces and of proper appreciation based on performance. Dr. N. C. Patel, Honourable Vice Chancellor, Anand Agricultural University, Anand, in his presidential address endorsed the importance of hands on training in industry. He said that role of human resource management is to train and uplift the man power so as to extract the best out of them. He also stressedthe importance of ensuring personnel and psychological health of human work force and remarked that clarity of assigned job is very essential which will ultimately ensure the quality. Dr. A.K. Makwana, convener of the seminar proposed vote of thanks. On the occasion a compendium of research articles published in the form of book with ISBN number was released by the dignitaries. The seminar had five eminent speakers, Shri Sujit Kumar Bhuniya, General manager, HRD, NDDB, Anand, Prof. Saswata Narayan Biswas, Professor, IRMA, Anand, Dr. Preeti Shulka, Assistant manager (HR & CSR), AMUL dairy, Anand, Dr. J. V. Parekh, International Dairy consultant, Mumbai, Dr. K.S. Prasasd, GHPIBM, S.P. University, V. V. Nagar, Anand and Dr. A. K. Makwana, I/C professor &Head, Dairy Business Management, SMC College of Dairy science, AAU, Anand. The deliberations in the seminar have come up with important key point to make dairy science education more effective in the country and also for effective management of human resources in dairy sector.

Dr J.B. Prajapati was invited to 44th Dairy Industry Conference organized by Indian Dairy Association at NDRI, Karnal duirng18-20 February, 2016, where he acted as an expert for poster session as well as a panel member for B2B session.

in association with SASNET-FF and ICN, Canada during April 5-6, 2016 at BHU, Varanasi, India. Dr. Prajapati presented a lead talk as well as chaired a session.In the same conference, Dr. Hatiacted as Rapporteur in the Technical Session on Fermented Food, Food Biotechnology and Clinical Aspect.

Dr. Sreeja V, Dairy Microbiology has attended and presented her research work in the 8th International Conference on “Translational Research in Cardiovascular Sciences” India section organized by International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences (IACS), and Anand Pharmacy College, Anand, Gujarat during February 5-6, 2016.

Dr. Atanu Jana delivered an Invited talk on “Dietary Interventions in improving human nutrition through vital dairy components” at the Seminar at NDRI, Karnal on 6th April, 2016. Dr. Jana gave an invited talk on “Villain with guerrilla tactics – trans fat in processed foods” at half day seminar organized by the Department of Foods and Nutrition M.S. University, Vadodara on 20th January, 2016. He also delivered an invited talk on “Value addition to ice cream and frozen desserts” in Technical Seminar in Tech-Fest “Spectrum-16” at AD Patel Institute of Technology, VithalUdyognagar on 24th February, 2016. Dr. Jana was invited to deliver two guest lectures on ‘Fat-rich dairy products’ and ‘Ice cream and frozen desserts’ at Training programme on “Basics of Dairy Technology” organized by MIT-NDDB on 18th May, 2016 at Mansinh Institute of Technology, Mehsana.

Mr. Amit M. Patel, Mr. A. J. Gokhale and Mr. Hiral H. Modha have successfully completed their Ph.D programme in the discipline of Dairy technology while Mr. Satish C. Parmar, Mr. Amit Jain received their Ph.D degree in Dairy Chemistry.

Placements

Placement of almost 100% students is done in the academic year 2015-16. Of which about 15% have joined private dairies, 70% have joined co-operatives in Gujarat and other states and 15% opted for higher studies. NSS Activities

SMC College of Dairy Science carried out various NSS activities under the aegis of Anand Agricultural University, during the academic year 2015-16. Thalassemia test for first year students has been carried out on January 29, 2016. Matrubhasha Divas was celebrated on February 21, 2016. Different competitions such as essay writing, singing, extempore and poster makinghave been conducted.All students enthusiastically participated in the events and made it a successful one. A special camp of 7 days has

been organized at Navli village, Anand in which 63 students have participated. Different activities like cleaning of village, slogan writing, drama on social problems and lectures of experts from different field of agriculture, veterinary, dairy and food was conducted for the benefit of village people.Mr. Chetan Dharaya was the coordinator of various NSS activities.

12th Annual Convocation

Twelfth annual convocation of Anand Agricultural University,

Anand was held on February 2016. President of the

convocation was Honorable Governor of Gujarat and

Chancellor of Anand Agricultural University, Shri O. P. Kohliji

while the chief guest was Shri TapanMisra, Director Space

Applications Centre, ISRO, Ahmedabad. The guest of

honour of the function was Shri Chhatrasinh Mori, Honorable

Minister of state for Food & Civil supplies, Consumer affairs,

GOG. ‘Best Teacher award’ in Faculty of Dairy Science

was awarded to Dr. A. G. Bhadania, Professor & Head,

Department of Dairy Engineering. Vice chancellor’s gold

medal was awarded to Patel Harshketu Jagdishbhai for

being adjudged the ‘Best Student’ of Faculty of Dairy Science.

Abhisek Panwar, received eight gold medals and one cash

prize for securing highest C. G. P. A in various subject of B.

Tech degree course. Patel Rinkal Rajendrabhai, Panchal

Kalpak Mahendrakumar, Chauhan Rashmi Rupsinh

and Chaudhary Priyankaben Rameshbai received gold

medal for securing highest O. G. P. A in the subject of Dairy

Technology, Dairy Microbiology, Dairy Chemistry and Dairy

Engineering respectively for their Post Graduate studies.

Vidya Corner…From September 2004 to June 2016, Vidya Dairy has offered

375 short-term training programmes and trained 6417

practicing dairy / non-dairy professionals from throughout the

country. So far Vidya Dairy has trained 992 students. A new

23rd batch of 68 students joined Vidya Dairy on 15.04.2016.

Awards

Vidya Dairy was adjudged for the Silver Shield of “ICAI Awards

for Excellence in Financial Reporting” for the Financial Year

2014-15. Award was presented by Shri Tshering Kezang,

Auditor General of Bhutan and CA K. Rahman Khan, MP, Rajya

Sabha. On behalf of Vidya Dairy, the shield was received by

Shri Jaydev V. Patel, Assistant Manger (Sales & Gen. Admn)

on 06.02.2016.

Parents’ day was celebrated on 9 th April 2016, in which

parents of almost all students were present. On this occasion

students having Zero Deficit, First Prize winner in category of

Best Student, Poster Competition, Best Group and Highest

Dr. JR Patel Memorial Charitable Trust has instituted

following two awards for the alumni and faculty members of

SMC College of Dairy Science.

1. ‘Dr. JR Patel Memorial Award for Education and

Research’

2. ‘Dr. JR Patel Memorial Award for Dairy/ Food

Professionals’

Each award comprise of a cash amount of Rs. 5000 and

a citation. The purpose and spirit of these awards is to

recognize outstanding contributions in India or abroad, of

an educationist and/or researcher and professional as an

individual or as a team. Contributions of 10 years proceeding

the year for which applications are invited will be considered

for the award. The claim of achievements/contributions by

the candidate(s) must be duly supported by documentary

evidences/publications etc.

Nominations are invited in prescribed formats for both the

awards for the years 2015 and 2016. Application forms can

These awards will be given in a ceremony at the Twelth

National Seminar

“Dynamism in Dairy Industry and Consumer Demands”

Though milk consumption as a beverage is showing a declining trend, its use as an additive or ingredient in cereal and coffee/chocolate based beverages has increased, accounting for 73% of total usage. To meet the expected growth rate, based on population boom, it is necessary to employ advanced technologies, automation, application of ICT, Big data analysis for studying consumers’ preference and tool to predict the future needs.Consumer demands for healthy, safe and nutritious food is increasing. The dairy industry has to bring in dynamism to cater to the changing needs of the today’s consumer demands and move in that direction.

The technical sessions will cover the major areas of dynamism related to the theme viz;

Safe and Clean milk production, Advances in dairy processing and new product development, Mechanization for commercial production of Indigenous and Western dairy products, Changes in the perspectives on Quality and Safety in Dairy Industry, Innovative Packaging and Marketing, Dynamism in dairy industry targeting the consumer demands. Lead papers will be presented by eminent speakers in each Technical session. Poster sessions related to the theme has been organized.

ALUMNI CONVENTION

The 12th Alumni Convention of SMC College of Dairy Science will be held on 4th February, 2017. At this reunion, about 350 Alumni working in dairies and other areas from all over the country and few from abroad will meet and discuss industry related technical matters and share their experience. This time the pass out graduates and post-graduates of the years 1991 and 1992 batches will be honoured for their valued contribution in past 25 years. Apart from them, a few distinguished alumni will also be honoured.
