Events

1. Order tickets in advance at www.OhioWines.org or call our Toll Free Number 800-227-6972. Orders can be charged to a credit card or a check can be sent by mail. You must be 21 to order tickets. All ticket sales are final.

2. When ordering tickets, travelers will be asked to choose a winery to start at where their Shott Zwiesel wine glasses and main gift item will be waiting for them. All additional items will be collected at each stop.

3. Each event features a unique theme and will offer various hors d’ouevres prepared by each winery and paired with one to two samples of their wine. Allow for at least 30-40 minutes at each winery learning about the wines, the region, and the wineries.

4. The Wing Watch & Wine trail is a self-drive tour. For larger groups we suggest renting a bus/cab/limousine. In any case, please be responsible and use a designated driver to make the day safe and enjoyable!

5. There are between 12-13 wineries on the Wing Watch & Wine trail. Many travelers may choose to make their experience a two-day trip, as it is difficult to visit all the wineries in one day. There are many local Bed & Breakfasts and lodging accommodations in the area that may offer special rates for trail travelers. Please contact our office for more details.

6. Ohio Wine Producers will send all travelers an information packet about a week before the first day of the trail. This packet will include the travel card stating the designated start winery and a place for each winery to sign their initials signifying that you have visited that winery. This is your trail “ticket”. The packet will also include a brochure with a map of the trail. We suggest going to mapquest.com with the winery’s addresses to better plot a course. Credit cards will not be charged until your trail packet is finished and a receipt will be included.

We hope to see you on the trail!

Rules of the RoadWhen you travel to a winery, the first ‘rule’ is to have some fun and enjoy your visit. However, a few simple tips will help you accomplish that goal.

• If you are sampling, remember, Ohio law precludes giving away wine, so be prepared to pay a small amount for each one you taste.

• Do NOT wear heavy perfumes or colognes – and do not chew gum. All will interfere with your tasting experience.

• If you don’t enjoy a variety, simply dump it out.

• Remember – safety first. Consume responsibly – no more than a couple of ounces of wine per hour – and make sure you enjoy some food as you sample, OR, better yet, appoint a designated driver to make sure everyone who tastes has fun and returns home safely.

Once you begin your actual tasting:

• Start with the driest wine you think you will enjoy and progress through dry to sweet, whites before reds.

• Follow four basic tasting steps:• Appearance: tip your glass and look at

the wine. Is the color brilliant, intense, clear?

• Aroma: swirl the wine to release the aromas. Is it fresh, fruity, complex, grapey?

• Taste: take a small sip and roll it around in your mouth. Is it sweet, dry, light, full bodied?

• Finish: What is the overall impression after the wine is swallowed. Is it pleasant, well balanced, memorable, short lived or long lasting?

Wine Words

Ohio produces wines from many different kinds of grapes under our ‘cool climate’ conditions. This means our reds tend to be lighter and our whites more aromatic with fruit forward. They fall into three basic families:

Vitis vinifera: grown extensively in every wine-producing region in the world

French-American hybrids: originally developed in Europe but also widely planted in the eastern United States.

Vitis labrusca: native to North America and noted for ‘grapey’ characteristics.

Our most common winegrapes with very abbreviated descriptors:

Vitis vinifera - European style varietiesChardonnay – white – rich, complex, oaky, dry, the ‘Queen’ of white wine varietiesGewürztraminer – white – spicy, off dry, intense floral aromasPinot Gris – white – dry to off dry [grigio style], crisp, subtle fruit aromasRiesling – white – off dry to dry, fruity, crisp, fresh with nose ranges from melons to citrusCabernet Franc – red – dry as light red, sometimes an off dry blush, soft and spicy undertonesCabernet Sauvignon – red – always dry, bold, complex, depth from tannins, oak and intense fruit flavorsMerlot – red – light, dry, more fruit up front, an approachable red for beginnersPinot Noir – red – dry but lighter bodied, aromas of cherry and smoke

French American varietiesSeyval Blanc – white – with chardonnay parentage – dry, usually with some oak Traminette – white – with gewürztraminer parentage, off dry, light and spicyVidal Blanc – white – light, off dry, very fruity and aromatic, also used for ice winesVignoles – white – versatile, from dry to sweet, light and fruityChambourcin – red – most common red hybrid, light, dry, cherry and black currant nose, good introductory red

Vitis labrusca - Native American varietiesNiagara – white – aromatic, sweet and intense flavors Delaware – white – less intense labrusca, often used as a base for sparklersCatawba – white or pink – historic grape that was once the foundation of the industry – still one of the most popular of all the sweet wines soldConcord – red – another foundation grape, rich sweet, jammy grape flavors
