From Tuesday to Saturday they operate an inclusive, ‘All styles, all genres’ attitude, delivering bass-heavy house, techno, trance, electro and disco. The likes of Moby, Carl Craig, Disclosure, and Alan Braxe have all laid down the beats, with resident Brodinski, who heads up the regular Bromance nights, championing the club as “the soul of Paris’s electronic dance scene”. Social Club also has a unique reputation for conjuring up experimental collaborations with known and unknown artists, their commitment to pushing the cultural boundaries drawn from the building’s history. In the late 1890s presses there printed Emile Zola’s infamous ‘J’accuse’ letter, exposing the apparent anti- Semitism of the French government after the notorious Dreyfus Affair. And those principles remain, providing the backbone of Social Club’s ambition to “shape minds and lives” through a blend of music and culture. The decor, however, is far from historic – the black wall panels and booth are all split with bright white lines to give the main room a futuristic, Tron-like feel, enchanced by the neon strip lights and glowing coloured boxes on the ceiling. Aside from two bars and the odd sofa, there’s nothing but decks and a dancefloor, constantly packed with 500 sweating Parisian twentysomethings. In further tribute to its dedication to dance music, Resident DJ collective Club Cheval describe the 16-speaker, sub-strengthened soundsystem as “one of the best in Paris”. Doors are 11pm to 6am Tuesday to Saturday (3am on Tuesdays and Wednesdays); door taxes range from free to around €13-20, and if you’re lucky you’ll get a french kiss from Louis himself.
