a Time fOr Changegreetings everyone! it’s been a hectic quarter since we last spoke. The joyous occasion of ramadan and Eid, much awaited and much anticipated, gave us time to reflect and ponder. The annual Ramadan iftar was held in abu Dhabi, Dubai, egypt, Oman, saudi arabia and other Dsi locations and it was great to see Drake & scull united under one roof, talking, smiling and mingling with each other. We will share our memories of the iftars in this issue, through our cover story.

This was also a time for catching up with family, as many of us took off for annual vacations. i hope everyone had a pleasant time and is recharged, post eid, to tackle deadlines and targets head on.

We have had an eventful and satisfying year and all of us have contributed in equal measure to achieve positive results in the first three quarters. We are now heading into the home stretch, and with each one of us making an extra effort, we are sure to achieve the target we’ve set for ourselves in 2011.

While we make good progress in our careers, it is equally important to grow as people. One of the pillars of the month of ramadan is the concept of Zakat, where we try to help out people who are unfortunate and who lack the things we take for granted.

but we can extend Zakat beyond ramadan and try to make it a part of our daily life. One can make a small individual contribution in many ways, which can become significant later on. Some can contribute through donations and charities, while others can also help out by lending their hands.

lending a hand is the main thought behind Drake & scull’s latest initiative, which we call Drake & scull foundation. in this issue, we introduce you to the foundation, and will give you a small idea about the vision and our aspirations for it. i would like to congratulate Drake & scull employees who contributed generously, and the management who matched the amount raised during the ifar, to start the foundation on a positive note

This is the last issue of ba7ki in 2011 and the next time we meet again, it will be a brand new year with a new beginning. i wish you a happy 2012 in advance and look forward to your comments, suggestions and general feedback.

Until next time.

There was an air of mystery on the evening of 17th August, as more than 1000 Drake & Scull employees across the UAE gathered at the Ball room in the Atlantis hotel in Palm Jumeirah, to take part in the Annual Drake & Scull RamadanIftar.

The Iftar is an important part of DSI culture and is eagerly anticipated and awaited by all Drake & Scull employees andthemanagement.Besidesbreakingthefast, italsoserves as an occasion for staff from Dubai and Abu Dhabi to mingle and get to know each other, as well as catch up withthelatestdevelopments.

Theballroomwasfilledandbuzzingbythetimetheevening prayers were held and then everyone was treated to some delightful starters before moving onto the food stationsoutside.

ReflectingthemulticulturalmakeupofDrake&Scull’sworkforce, the food on offer was a delightful mix of traditionalArabic,Asianandsub-continentalcuisine.Asaneclectic mix of instrumental Oud music played gently in the background for an hour, everyone relaxed and chatted with strangersandfriends.

Once the hour hand reached 8, it was time to get startedwiththeothermainactivitiesfortheevening.Mr. khaldoun Tabari, Drake & Scull CEO & Vice Chairman, started off with a rousing speech where he welcomed the gathering, and emphasized the importance of the annual Iftar.Hethenoutlinedtheperformanceachievedbythecompany in 2011, the hurdles and challenges on the way ahead, aswellasthetargetsthathadtobeachieved.Aspeech that was punctuated with regular applause, he also greeted Drake & Scull employees in other countries and sharedsomepersonalanecdoteswiththeaudience.

Eager to make the best use of the opportunity, we met with Ms Duaa Sayed Ahmed, Project Electrical Engineer, to get to know a bit about the important design aspect, which must be thoroughly reviewed before the main construction activitycanbegin.

“We are currently working on theVicePresidentialwing”,shebegan, “and my job is to review the designs that come from the consultant, and check to see whether they are compliant with

thecivilregulationsofAbuDhabi.I work with the draughtsmen to convert the designs to what we call shopdrawings.”The design team is focusing on the lighting, power, load schedules, data(voiceandcommunications),firealarm, containment,ICT(CCTVandothersecuritysystems),clocksystemsetc.TheplansfortheMainpowersystems, which are essential services for any building are also being thoroughlyreviewed.

We then met Mr Mohammad Qeshta, Project mechanical Engineer, to explain to us the mechanical works that were beingundertakenatthesite.Hegaveusatourofthereception area in the massive main Building complex, and told us that the foundation works had been completed, and thatactivityonthegroundservicewouldcommencesoon.

“They are currently making the retaining walls, after which we will proceed with the underground slab, mezzanine and the first floor slabs.”, he explained. “Right now, we are installing the sleeves and boxes for our WCs. We also install embedded pipes at this stage, which carry water for things like wash basins, condensers etc. We also embed the Storm water systems, which are useful for draining rain water from a building.”

This is a crucial stage of mEP work, he pointed out, as after this, concrete is poured over the boxes and sleeves, to lay the ground slab, and any future corrections would be almostimpossibletomake.

We visited the Parking area, where a drivers’ waiting area isbeingbuilt.Sincethiswasstillinthepreliminarystages,we were able to observe how the underground systems areinstalled.

A painstaking effort is made after the excavation stage, as pipes are laid by the mEP teams, and then hydrostatic pressuretestsarecarriedouttocheckforleaks.Thetests are carried out by the consultant, who then gives an approval for the Civil teams to pour concrete on top of the pipes.Thesepipesformthecoreofthedrainagesystemsinbuildingsandareapartofessentialservices.

Besides mechanical, work on the HVAC, plumbing, chilledwater, firefightinganddomesticwatersystemswillalsobestartingverysoononthesite.Oncetheslabsare completed and the walls erected, the main electrical activitywouldalsobeinitiated.

We thank the Presidential Palace team for their hospitality and co-operation in giving us a tour of the premises, patiently answering our queries, and we wish them success as they achieve yet another milestone in our proud history.

Ba7ki: Thank you for meeting us Mr Rajaei. To start off, can you tell us a bit about the scope of our work on this project?Ans: The scope of our work is the complete mEP packagesfortheMainBuildingandthePresidentialWing.Themainbuildingwillbetheofficesofthepresident,andtheWingswillbetheprivatequarters.Anotherpartofourscope is the Parking and waiting areas for the drivers andthemusicbands.Thesiteitselfwillalsocontaintheaccommodation for the security and the support staff, so itwillbemassive.Almostacitywithinthecity.Itisaveryprestigious project, and once completed, it will be a talking pointandahighlightoftheUAE.Theprojectisscheduledtobecompletedbyearly2013.

We are in discussions to increase our scope and role on thesite, butthosearestillinthepreliminarystage.

Q: Please take us through the design of the site itself, and some of its unique features.A: Becauseit’ssuchahighprofileproject, there’salotofinputfromtheclientsandtheconsultantsconstantly. While mEP features are very similar in all construction, the ideaisthechallenge.Becausethispalacewillserveastheseat for the UAE government, a place where dignitaries andheadsofstatewillmeetwiththepresident’soffice, everythingmustbeofthehighestquality.Thechallengefor us is to ensure that all designs are in place when any activitystarts.Sitechangesmustbeabletocopeupwithdesignchanges.Implementingthechangesdespitewhatever stage of progress has been made in an area is a bighurdle.

Q: Can you tell us about the DSI team here? How many did we start with and how many additions are you anticipating in the future?A:WecameoverhereinDecember2010.Therewasan initial team of engineering team of 7 draughts men, engineering manager, 3 engineer, senior mechanical engineerandsupportstaff.Nomajorlaborworkforceat that point of time, as foundation work was still going on.Todaywehavearound48staff,constructionandengineering.Theteamofdraughtsmen,engineers,safetyofficersandinspectorshasincreased.WealsohaveQA/QC, documentation control and the number of laborers has

increasedtoaround60roughly.It’satightship,butfightingfit,asIliketocallit.Aswemoveforward,Ianticipateourteamtogrowtoaround1500orso.

Q: Can you tell us about any problems that we faced so far?A: Wellanyprojectfacesthesamesetofchallenges. We work with strict deadlines and try to stay ahead of schedules.Sometimes, therearelastminutedesignschanges that make you rework on something already completed.Whenworkingwithmultipleteams,withothercontractors,communicationisvitalforco-ordination.Sometimes, let’s say we mark an area to install our pipes, but the civil contractor pours concrete on the area beforewehaveinstalledthem.Thenyouhavetolookintoreroutingpipelinesandsoon.

Such things tend to happen sometimes, which is why, we must make sure to have proper documentation and issuenotificationsasconcernedwithourwork, andto also make sure that any activity commences afterobtainingapprovals.

Q: We know that the summer break was in force along with Ramadan this year. How much did this affect our productivity, and how did we plan to compensate for it?A: Productivity always drops during the summer, but that is something that can’t be really helped.Weloseworktimebetween 12-4 Pm, because it becomes so hot that no one can be humanely expected to work in such conditions.Plus this year, Ramadan fell during the

Q: Do you have any words for your fellow

teams, working on various projects worldwide?A: At the end of the day, as

DSI staff, we have to ensure that our work speaks for ourcapabilities.Wemustmakealleffortstomeetanydeadlines, whether it’s submissions, approvals or anything else.Ifwecompareittoaship, thentheprojectmanagerhas a responsibility to ensure that the entire team makes ittocompletionordockingsafely.Eachjobhasitsownrequirements,complexityandclientinvolvement.AsMEP,wehavetoworkintandemwithotherteams.Someintheindustry place mEP on the bottom end of the Totem pole, butMEPconstitutesagood30-40%ofconstruction.Wehave to be more informative and make general contractors treatusasthemainsubcontractors.Weareluckythatonthis project, the general contractor has been very receptive toourrequestsandneeds.

Incontrastto“design–bid–build”(or“design–tender”),design–build relies on a single point of responsibility contract and is used to minimize risks for the project owner and to reduce the delivery schedule by overlapping the design phase and construction phase ofaproject.

DB with its single point responsibility carries the clearest contractual remedies for the clients because the DB contractor will be responsible for all of the work on the project, regardless of the natureofthefault.

The traditional approach for construction projects consists of the appointment of a designer on one side, and the appointment of acontractorontheotherside.Thedesign–buildprocurementroutechangesthetraditionalsequenceofwork.Itanswerstheclient’s wishes for a single-point of responsibility in an attempt to reducerisksandoverallcosts.Itisnowcommonlyusedinmanycountriesandformsofcontractsarewidelyavailable.

Proponents of design–build counter that design–build saves time and money for the owner, while providing the opportunity toachieveinnovationinthedeliveredfacility.Theyalsonotethat design–build allows owners to avoid being placed directly betweenthearchitect/engineerandthecontractor.Underdesign–bid–build,theownertakesonsignificantrisksbecauseofthatposition.Design–buildplacestheresponsibilityfordesignerrorsand omissions on the design–builder, relieving the owner of major legalandmanagerialresponsibilities.Theburdenforthesecostsandassociatedrisksaretransferredtothedesign–buildteam.

The cost and schedule reduction and decreased litigation associated with design–build project delivery have been demonstratedrepeatedly.AmericanresearcheonSelectingProject Delivery Systems found that design–build projects are delivered33.5%fasterthanprojectsthataredesignedandbuiltunderseparatecontracts(design-bid-build).Theyalsoshowedthat design–build projects are constructed 12% faster and have a unitcostthatis6.1%lowerthandesign-bid-buildprojects.

It is a fairly new concept in the middle East, but as more is seen of this method, the roles and responsibility of the contractor will becomeclearer.Theclientwouldalsoneedtoensurethattheright contractors are used, with enough experience and resources toenablethemtocompletetheprojecttothequalityrequired.

Design-build (DB) is a project delivery system used in the construction industry. It is a method to deliver a project in which the design and construction services are contracted by a single entity known as the design–builder or design–build contractor.

h WZZaT?Cricket, as a popular saying goes, is more than just a sport in South Asia. The India-Pakistan match at the World Cup earlier this year almost brought the two countries to a standstill. Home to the sport’s governing body (The ICC) and thanks to a large expatriate populace from the subcontinent, cricket is among the most popular sports in the UAE. It is competitively played at local and national levels, with a number of corporate tournaments held round the year.A small team of 15 employees have been representing Drake & Scull at some of these events in the last few years, and have also notched up several victories. Ba7ki met with the team at the Al Sajja accommodation and had a small chat.

Ba7ki: Hello. Thank you for meeting us.
