US President D o n a l d

Trump’s travel ban on citizens of seven Musl im-majori ty nations is not anti-Islam, the United

Arab Emirates foreign minister said yesterday.

of Washington, said it was “wrong to say” that the decision by the new US administration was “directed against a particular religion”.

“The United States has made a sovereign decision,” he said at a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, pointing out that it was “provisional” and did not apply to “the large majority” of the world’s Muslims.

In his defence of the ban which has stirred widespread protests across the globe, Sheikh Abdullah also said that some of the countries on the blacklist had “structural challenges” on the security front that they still had to overcome.

Trump’s controversial

executive order on last week singled out citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen to prevent “radical Islamic terrorists” from entering the United States.

But the 90-day ban, which could still extend to other states, has exempted Muslim-majority nations associated with major attacks in the West.

Out of the 19 hijackers of planes used in the September 11, 2011 attacks on the Unites States, 15 came from Saudi Arabia, also the birthplace of attack mastermind Osama bin Laden. The other four included the Egyptian plot leader, two Emiratis and a Lebanese. - (AFP)

Word “ban” is inappropriate“This is not a Muslim ban. It’s not a travel ban. It’s a

vetting system to keep America safe. That’s it. Plain and simple,” White House spokesman Sean Spicer said, complaining that the word “ban” is inap-propriate.One problem: Trump used the very word in a

tweet on Monday.“He is using the word that the media is using,”

explained an uneasy Spicer.

Target: GermanyTop Trump eco-

nomic advisor Peter Navarro bashed Germany for exploit-ing an undervalued

euro to take advan-tage of its European

neighbours, in a rare public rebuke of a major

US trading partner.Navarro’s comments, made in a Financial Times interview, were the latest example of the new United S administration’s abrasive tactics, with Trump himself using public attacks and Twitter to criticize businesses and allies. Navarro, who heads the White House’s new National Trade Council, told the FT that Germany “continues to exploit other countries in the EU as well as the US with an ‘implicit Deutsche mark’ that is grossly undervalued.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sharpened his criticism of Trump’s ban on travellers from seven mainly-Muslim nations, calling it a “blind” measure more likely to fan extremist propaganda than combat the threat of terrorism.Guterres warned that countries seeking to strengthen control of their borders cannot do so “based on any form of discrimination related to religion, ethnicity or nationality.”

Mexicans are replacing profile pictures on social media with

their country’s flag. Others are calling for boycotts of American products like Coca-Cola and Starbucks.

US President Donald Trump’s vow to make Mexicans pay for a massive border wall has not only caused a diplomatic row, it has sparked patriotic fervor south of the border.

On Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, people are using the hashtag #WeAreAllMexico, punctuating anti-Trump tweets with cries of “Viva Mexico!” and boasting that they live in “the best country in the world.”

President Enrique Pena Nieto’s spokesman, his foreign and finance ministers, and government departments

have made the country’s green, white and red flag their profile photo on Twitter.

A slew of hashtags encourage Mexicans to stay away from American goods: #AdiosProductosGringos (goodbye gringo products), #AdiosStarbucks, #AdiosMcDonalds and #AdiosCocaCola.

Telecommunications magnate Carlos Slim, the world’s fourth richest man, called a rare news conference to express his “great pleasure” at the burst of national pride and support for the president, even though Pena Nieto’s economic reforms have chipped away at the billionaire’s telephone empire.

“This is the most surprising display of national unity that I have seen in my life,” Slim said, urging Mexicans to support Pena Nieto’s negotiations with the US administration. - (AFP)

Trump introduced conservative fed-eral appellate judge Neil Gorsuch as his choice to fill the Supreme Court seat that has been vacant for nearly a year, since the death of conservative Antonin Scalia.Gorsuch, 49, is considered to be an “originalist” -- guided in his legal rea-soning by what he believes to be the constitution’s original intent and meaning. He is the youngest nominee in a generation. The nine-seat court has been at eight since Scalia died in February 2016, as Republicans refused to set up a con-firmation hearing for Barack Obama’s pick, Merrick Garland.

Probe begins into incidents on January 26 DT News NetworkManama

Isa Al Ruwaie, the Chief Prosecutor at the Terror Crime

Prosecution, yesterday said that investigation has begun into January 26 incidents in which a terrorist group targeted security men and vehicles and attacked public and private properties in various parts of Bahrain.

The Public Prosecution was informed by the National Security Agency that suspects were arrested on January 26 as part of its investigation and search to identify all terrorists implicated

in targeting security forces and private and public properties. The investigations led to seven suspects who joined in the terror group and arrested three of them as the search continues to arrest the others. Weapons, explosive devices found in their possession were confiscated.

The first suspect confessed he joined the terrorist group and sheltered wanted fugitives. The second suspect also admitted he joined the group and assisted in taking first aid to those injured during confrontations with the security forces.

At the request of the Public Prosecution, investigations were conducted by police and led to the identification of the culprits who committed the crime.

Investigations indicated the suspects had set up the group, recruited members who assisted them in their terrorist crimes.

The Public Prosecution questioned the suspects and provided them with all the sureties under the law and charged them with setting up and joining a terrorist group, possession and using weapons and explosive devices.

Shootout between two groups caused injury to teenager, says NIHRDT News NetworkManama

The injury of the 17-year-old youngster during a protest last week in Duraz

was caused during a shootout between two groups of masked men who hurled stones at security forces, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) said yesterday.

NIHR statement comes in the context of the injury of Mustafa Hamdan who was shot in the head in Duraz while protesting near Issa Qassim’s house. The shooter is unknown. An 18-year-old Bahraini citizen was killed while two others, aged 16 and 26 sustained injuries during the protest on June 26.

“They were subjected to a physical assault which resulted in temporary incapacitation of one of them as well as physical and moral suffering to the other who was deprived of freedom and held captive in breach of the law,” the NIHR said. Referring to the police officer who was shot dead recently, the NIHR added that it received with great sadness

the Interior Ministry’s news on the martyrdom of First Lieutenant Hesham Hassan Al-Hamadi.

“The right to life and security are basic human rights and are considered as main elements in the democratic society,” the NIHR said. NIHR denounced all acts of violence and called to promote values of tolerance, justice, sovereignty of the law, respect of human rights as well as political, civil, economic, social and cultural freedom. The institution also urged to shun fanning hatred and deepening division, calling to face violence and take unified and effective procedures to stop all illegal acts undermining national unity and cohesion.

The NIHR called on all citizens to throw their weight behind the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to continue the reform approach and guide Bahrain into a more promising and prosperous future. It also reiterated commitment to respecting human rights as well as international covenants and conventions.

Warm welcome

to HM in Riyadh

4 Thursday, February 2, 2017

DT News NetworkRiyadh

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa arrived

in Riyadh yesterday on a visit to Saudi Arabia at the invitation of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

HM King Hamad will attend the opening ceremony of the 31st edition of the National Heritage and Culture Festival, held annually by the Saudi National Guard Ministry under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques at Al-Janadriyah region.

On arrival at the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, HM the King was welcomed mainly by King

Salman, members of the Saudi Royal family and the Bahraini Ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

HM King Hamad delivered a statement in which he expressed pleasure to participate in the 31st Al-Janadriyah Festival at the kind invitation of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.

“This festival has become a civilisational tradition, and an Arab and human platform that brings together an elite of writers, intellectuals and researchers from all over the world,” HM the King said.

HM the King lauded the festival which, he said, aims to deepen the civilisational identity and maintain the generations’ communication with their heritage, culture and

traditions. HM added that the festival has become a key event that embodies the authentic Islamic heritage and attracts prominent Arab and Islamic intellectuals. “Al-Janadriyah Festival has become a model to be emulated in the GCC and Arab countries,” HM King Hamad said.

“The festival has a special status, and that’s why we have been strongly attached to it ever since it was launched. We are happy to make this brotherly visit to Saudi Arabia at the invitation of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, whose support to the glorious national festival we highly appreciate,” HM the King added.

HM the King stressed strong and historic fraternal relations between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, commending the historic and honourable stances of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia towards Bahrain which reflect deep-rooted ties binding both countries.

King Hamad valued highly the progress boom witnessed by Saudi Arabia in all fields during the era of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, commending King Salman’s efforts to defend Arab and Islamic issues, rally ranks and support legitimacy backed by the UN resolutions.

His Majesty wished the festival continuous success, praying to Allah the Almighty to bless both countries with constant security and stability.

(The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the policy or position of this newspaper.)

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa confirmed “that the Kingdom of Bahrain will maintain, God-

willing, its secure and blessed status in the sprit of one family” in celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the National Guard. His Majesty’s reassurance reminds citizens of the importance of peaceful co-existence and mutual respect as the foundation and responsibility for each Bahraini citizen and resident to maintain security, peace and cohesion, enabling us to continue living as one family as we always have.

In the modern globalized world cultures and societies are more interconnected than ever before, but unfortunately this has not alleviated conflicts and sustainable development, particularly if we scan the Middle Eastern region. A decent and peaceful life is a valuable treasure, and without peace life is not worth living. While the government plays an essential role to safeguard peace, peace is not something that can be “given” to societies, rather all citizens and residents are responsible to maintain security, peace and safety within their own personal life and sphere of influence. Every citizen must defend Bahrain and our mutual security, to support the government’s efforts.

Unfortunately recent events in the Kingdom of Bahrain have indicated heightened violence and extremism in the behavior of a minority of people seeking to undermine peace and social cohesion. Beginning by verbally attacking others and spreading this ideology of hate, such individuals and groups ultimately murder our fellow citizens, which is particularly outrageous when they target police and security officials who put their life on the line every day to defend the life of every Bahraini. This violence is an aberration and something alien to the classical features of the Bahraini community, which has always been particularly known for its social cohesion and mutual cooperation among people of various religions, denominations, cultures and races.

It is very challenging in the modern world, with its rapid movement of information and people, to stem the flow of evil ideologies that encourage violence and extremism. However, by continually stressing and reiterating our “Bahraini shared values” it is possible to defend our country against this violent trend that threatens you and all of your loved ones. We do not need international interventions, we need our inherited peaceful behaviors that have always granted us social and economic success in our lives and development previously. This inheritance exists in each Bahraini citizen from our parents, ancestors and community, but this precious treasure can be lost forever if all of us do not ensure that we protect our shared characteristics in an outwardly globalized world, continuing the secret of our safety and security.

The peace of the community is a fundamental need and right. Just as any illness in the body must be diagnosed by specialist doctors, the illness in community values and behaviors should be outlined carefully as an advanced step to protect the value of security, which entails military security to maintain peace in the community.

Multinational School Bahrain (MSB) has filed

a lawsuit against its former board members Julia Jefferson and Grant Jefferson, school officials said yesterday.

The duo, who owned a combined 50 per cent stake in the institution, stopped their involvement in running the school recently. Both have also made a public statement that they ended their partnership with the local owners of MSB.

Asked why Julia Jefferson and Grant Jefferson have ended the partnership, the Board consultant Ismaeel Ridha said: “In the recent past there were some issues, they fell short of our expectations when it came to the school operations. The high standards we set were not being met. Even the Ministry of Education mentioned this to us. So we found that it was necessary to part ways.”

Explaining the case further, Ridha said: “When we did the auditing we found some points that we needed clarifications and they did not provide us the clarifications. They had rights to sign agreements and such, they had these powers but we believe they have misused this. According to the audit report they have made related party transactions so we will go ahead with this case in court.

We are not here to say that they are cheaters, we will let the court of Bahrain to decide on the matter.”

“We will also take legal action for using our data to harm us,” he said adding that there will be further cases filed against them.

Julia and Grant have made

allegations against the board, accusing them of committing ‘illegal acts’.

“We are sorry to inform you that starting November 27, 2016 we ceased to be involved in the management of the MSB due to a series of illegal acts committed against our legitimate interests and rights in the school. We have proceeded in taking all necessary legal measures needed to restore our rights and to protect our interests as well as to obtain indemnities from the breaching parties to cover all material and moral damages caused to us. Unfortunately, the MSB - Bahrain is no longer part of the Multinational group of schools. We are very disappointed not to be able to continue to serve and

support the MSB – Bahrain community,” they said in a statement.

“We set up the MSB with the intention to run the school indefinitely. We were stunned that the school was taken over without any prior consultation including the finances of the school. We have been trying

to resolve this situation but have been unable to since November 27. We would like nothing better than the school to be part of the Multinational Group of schools. U n f o r t u n a t e l y our local partners do not share this vision. We are unable to comment on the capabilities of the school’s current m a n a g e m e n t and ownership.

I can say that me and my team’s capabilities from the Multinational School group are no longer available to the school. This includes our school improvement capabilities to deliver outstanding teaching and learning, leadership and management and school administration,” they said

in their statement. Ridha dismissed the allegations stating that the board have not committed anything illegal.

“I believe this change is very positive for the school. I am very happy with what the board members are talking about. We have ambitious plans to develop the school further,

we are looking at options for getting a bigger campus more facilities,” said Head of Learning Enhancement Paul Large.

However, neither the changes within the management nor the legal battle it is involved will affect students, Large assured.

Jakarta

Indonesian women are taking on a more active

role in violent extremism, with some seeking to become Islamic State (IS) group suicide bombers, a leading security think tank has warned.

The growing problem was highlighted after the arrest in December of two women with links to IS allegedly planning suicide attacks in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, according to a report from the Jakarta-based Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict (IPAC).

Many from Indonesia, which has long struggled with Islamic militancy have flocked to join IS in the Middle East, while radicals in the country have pledged allegiance to the group and attacks and plots have been linked to the jihadists.

But the increasing eagerness of Indonesian women to get involved in radicalism themselves, rather than merely support their extremist husbands, poses

new risks, said the report from IPAC, which is headed by veteran Indonesian security analyst Sidney Jones.

“Indonesian women in extremist organisations are now catching up with the lethal practices of their sisters in other parts of the world,” according to the study.

Increasing female involvement is linked to the appeal of IS but also to the growing sophistication of social media, which allows more women to read the jihadists’ propaganda and

take part in radical chat forums, said the report, which was released late Tuesday.

The most high-profile cases were the arrest of two former domestic workers, Dian Yulia Novi and Ika Puspitasari, who had allegedly volunteered to become suicide bombers in Jakarta and Bali.

Leading Indonesian IS radical Bahrun Naim, who has been accused of directing a series of mostly botched terror plots in his homeland from Syria, had given them instructions and financial

support, the report said.Authorities detained Novi

and her husband the night before a planned attack on the presidential palace in Jakarta and later picked up Puspitasari, who was part of the same network and had been planning to carry out a bombing on the holiday island of Bali, the report said.

Other women have been arrested for offences including setting up a pro-IS charity, helping to make a bomb, and being fighters with a militant group on Sulawesi island.

IPAC called for the Indonesian government to try to find out more about female radical networks, including interviewing the many women who have been deported from Turkey after allegedly trying to cross into Syria to join IS.

“The need to know more about Indonesian extremist women suddenly has become urgent,” it said.

Indonesia’s national counter-terror agency declined to comment. - (AFP)

‘Rent-a-monk’ thrives as Japan loses temple tiesFunabashi

In a quiet room thick with the smell of incense, Buddhist

monk Kaichi Watanabe chants sutras to commemorate the one-year anniversary of a woman’s death.

The 41-year-old may look like a traditional holy man in Japan -- but he wasn’t dispatched by a temple. Instead, the family ordered him through a fast-growing rent-a-monk business that has angered traditionalists who warn it is commercialising the religion.

Watanabe’s employer, Tokyo-based firm Minrevi, said demand for its monk delivery service has spiked since it started in May 2013,

as more and more Japanese lose their ties to local temples -- and lose faith in an opaque donation system.

The monk later rings a small traditional bell and bows to relatives as the 30-minute ceremony winds down at the grieving family’s home near Tokyo.

“There are many temples in the neighbourhood, but I didn’t know where to call,” said the deceased woman’s middle-aged son, who asked not to be named.

“Also, I have no idea how much I should donate. But this has a clear pricing system.”

At the click of a mouse, customers can hire a monk

from Minrevi from 35,000 yen($300) depending on the ceremony.

Retailing giant Aeon sent shockwaves through Buddhist circles in 2010 when it started a service that had a price list for introducing customers to temples for funeral services.

The open pricing flew in the face of longstanding system in which monks collect donations, known as ofuse, in return for performing ceremonies.

India building collapse killsfour, more feared trapped

New Delhi

A building under construction collapsed

yesterday in northern India killing at least four labourers, an administrative official said.

Workers were placing a concrete slab on the top floor of the seven-storey residential building in Uttar Pradesh state’s Kanpur district when it came crashing down.

“Four labourers have been killed and 17 have been rushed to a hospital with injuries,” said Kaushal Raj, area’s top administrative official.

Raj said the rescue operation would continue overnight “since there are some 30 more who are feared trapped under the debris”.

Mentally ill patients died in S.Africa fiascoJohannesburg

At least 94 mentally ill patients died after

authorities moved them last year from hospital to unlicensed centres that were compared to “concentration camps”, an investigation revealed yesterday.

Many of the deaths were due to dehydration as the patients were hurriedly shifted to 27 “poorly-prepared” facilities, the probe showed.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for

Syria’s return to the Arab League yesterday, saying its membership would allow the organisation to help find a political solution to the country’s conflict.

“The League could play a more important, more effective role if the Syrian

government was part of the organisation,” Lavrov, whose country is a key ally of the Damascus regime and also a broker in peace efforts, told a press conference in the Emirati capital.

He said Syria was a “legitimate” member of the United Nations and yet “cannot take part in discussions inside the Arab League”.

“This does not help our joint (peace) efforts,” said Lavrov.

But Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit, speaking at the same press conference, ruled out an early return of Syria to the Cairo-based organisation.

Any decision was up to the League’s 21 other members, he said, adding that the issue was not on the current agenda

and would only be raised when “a political settlement” was in sight for Syria’s almost six-year-old civil war.

The Arab League suspended Syria’s membership at the end of 2011 following months of brutal repression of anti-regime demonstrations and an opposition movement supported by Gulf monarchies.

Turning to new US President

Donald Trump’s proposal of establishing safe zones for refugees in Syria and Yemen, another war-torn Arab nation, Lavrov expressed scepticism.

“The Trump administration still has to work out a concrete approach. The idea of safe zones was studied at the onset of the Syrian crisis, something that would reproduce the sad experience of Libya,” he said.

“Everyone understood this when Libya was destroyed,” the Russian foreign minister said.

But Lavrov said he remained convinced that Russia could “re-establish a complete and regular dialogue with the United States to lead to pragmatic results towards settling the situation in Syria, Libya and Yemen”.

He said such cooperation would “not be dictated by the ideology of democratisation for example”, referring to the role of past US administrations in the

overthrow of dictators such as Iraq’s Saddam Hussein and Moamer Kadhafi in Libya.- (AFP)

US, Saudi reject Iran

‘interventions’Riyadh

New Pentagon chief James Mattis agreed

in a telephone call with his Saudi counterpart to oppose Iranian “interventions” in the Middle East, Saudi state media reported yesterday.

Mattis and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed “their full rejection of the suspicious activities and interventions by the Iranian regime and its agents”, the Saudi Press Agency said.

The two ministers spoke on Tuesday.

Mattis, a retired four-star Marine general, has described Iran as “the biggest destabilising force in the Middle East”.

Trump has opposed a July 2015 nuclear deal between world powers and Iran that saw the lifting of international sanctions in exchange for guarantees that it will not pursue a nuclear weapons capability.

On Sunday, the White

House said Trump and King Salman, Prince Mohammed’s father, agreed on “rigorously” enforcing the I ran deal.

Also during the call, Prince Mohammed said he “looked forward to working together to serve the interests of both countries and the fight against terrorism,” SPA said.

It is the latest hopeful comment issued by the

longtime US ally about the administration of Trump, who took office on January 20.

The United States and Saudi Arabia have a decades-old relationship based on the exchange of American security for Saudi oil.

But ties between Riyadh and Washington became increasingly frayed during the administration of president Barack Obama. - (AFP)

Iran confirms missile testTehran

Iran confirmed yesterday that it had tested a ballistic missile,

but denied that was a breach of its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

The comments from Defence Minister Hossein Dehghan came after the UN Security Council met Tuesday to discuss the weekend test.

“The action was in line with boosting Iran’s defence power

and is not in contradiction with the the resolution” Dehghan said.

“This test was in line with our ongoing programmes,” Iranian media quoted him as saying.

Iran’s ballistic missile programme has been a bone of contention with the West since the nuclear deal took effect in January last year, triggering the lifting of international sanctions.

India’s finance minister pledged to raise spending on the rural

poor and halved the basic rate of income tax in his annual

budget yesterday, seeking to ease the pain of a shock move to

ban high-value banknotes.Arun Jaitley defended so-called demonetisation, saying it

would increase revenues by forcing people to declare untaxed

wealth, but conceded it had hit the economy and promised

relief for the poor and middle classes ahead of key polls.

Jaitley pledged to double the income of farmers, who have

been hard hit by the currency ban, in the next five years and

bring 10 million households out of poverty by 2019.

He also promised more affordable housing for the poor

and halved the basic rate of income tax to five percent.

“My overall approach while preparing this budget has been

to spend more in rural areas, poverty alleviation through fiscal

prudence,” Jaitley said in a speech to parliament.

The finance minister said tax evasion had become India’s “new

normal” as he laid out further measures to increase the number

of people paying their taxes after last November’s currency ban.

He said the rate cut was intended to reward those already

paying income tax, and encourage more to do so. The basic tax

rate applies to those with annual incomes of between 250,000

rupees ($3,700) and 500,000 rupees.

“We are largely a tax non-compliant society. When too

many evade tax, the burden falls on those who are honest,”

Jaitley said.Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unanticipated decision

removed around 86 per cent of India’s cash at a stroke, triggering

massive queues outside banks and a cash shortage that has hit

businesses across the country. (AFP)

BUSINESS Thursday, February 2, 20178

AgricultureThe government will aim to provide credit worth 10 tril-lion rupees ($150 billion) to farmers over the next fiscal year and will waive interest for 60 days.

Corruption Jaitley announced a ban on cash transac-tions worth more than 300,000 rupees and said the government was considering new legislation to seize the assets of “big time offenders” who flee abroad. Indian banks are currently trying to recover more than $1 billion owed by the Formula One tycoon Vijay Mallya who left the country for Britain last year.

TaxesThe basic rate of income tax was halved to five percent to help low earners. But those earning more than five million rupees a year will pay a 10 percent tax surcharge. The basic rate applies to those with annu-al incomes of between 250,000 rupees ($3,701) and 500,000 rupees and will fall from 10 per cent to 5pc from April.

Health and welfare Spending on health and welfare will rise to 489 billion rupees as the gov-ernment seeks to rid India of deadly diseases including leprosy, measles and tuberculosis.

EmploymentFunding for a gov-ernment scheme known as MNREGA, which guarantees a certain number of days of work to the rural poor, will rise to a record 480 billion rupees.

The budget has some positive elements with reductions of the income tax and

measures to improve GDP growth. However the healthcare sector has not been given much focus to attain the goal of   Right of Health for all citizens. The NRIs also don’t have much to cheer  except the removal of prior sanction for FDIs The much awaited scheme of Health Insurance for the returning NRIs didn’t find place in the budget.

One of the major areas which will benefit the common man is the decision to make generic medicines more widely available. This will reduce cost of medicines significantly and help the poor people.

The declaration to provide Rs 6000 to women after delivery if they get the child immunized is a very innovative step to help poor people and ensure immunization

The increase in  post graduate seats by 5000 and two new AIIMS will increase the availability of trained specialist doctors.

More of Primary Care Centers in the rural area will help a lot in preventive medical areas. Aadhar-linked health cards with data on their health for senior citizens will ease the worries with easily accessible information in times of emergencies, especially for those senior citizens living alone.

InfrastructureA record 3.96 trillion rupees

will be spent on infrastructure including modernising India’s roads, airports and crumbling railways. That includes a tril-

lion-rupee plan to improve safety on the railways after a

slew of deadly accidents.

Lowers forecastThe government lowered its growth forecast for the 2016-17 fiscal year ending in March to 7.1 per cent, down from 7.6pc in the previous year. Jaitley said India had under-gone “historic reform” over the past year, but remained an “engine of global growth”.

Deficit target Jaitley relaxed India’s fiscal deficit target to 3.2 per cent for the financial year 2017/18, citing the increase in govern-ment spending, but said it would be back on track for a three-per-cent deficit the following financial year.

The Waqf Fund, a Bahrain-based special fund to

support Islamic finance training, education and research, yesterday approved its budget for 2017 as well as new projects. The board has approved a budget of approximately US$1 million.

The 2017 budget includes a number of new projects such as the next phase of Leadership Grooming Programme and AAOIFI’s CSAA qualification revamp. Approvals were also given to a training programme for Bahraini judges, public prosecutors and criminal investigators of the Interior

Ministry. The decisions were made during the 27th Board of Trustees meeting at the Central Bank of Bahrain.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Waqf Fund Khalid Hamad briefed the board about the activities of the Fund during 2016. These included training programmes for junior staff of Islamic banks such as Advance Diploma in Islamic Finance, which is in its tenth year and has become the industry standard.

Advance Diploma in Islamic Commercial Jurisprudence, another flagship programme, is designed to build the capacity of Shari’ah resources by dwelling

deeper into jurisprudential issues. Both these programmes are conducted by BIBF.

The Waqf Fund also held two Roundtable Discussions during the year. The topics were “Liquidity Management of Islamic Banks” and “Revamping AAOIFI’s CSAA Qualification”. So far ten such Roundtables have been organised.

The board was informed that the revamp of AAOIFI’s CIPA qualification has been completed, a landmark project which was funded by the Waqf Fund. Two training programmes were conducted during the year for lawyers,

judges and public prosecutors to orientate them towards Islamic finance issues. The Waqf Fund also sponsored a textbook on Islamic economics by International Shari’ah Research Academy (ISRA), Malaysia. This will be a comprehensive book on Islamic economics meant for universities’ bachelor and master programs. BIBF provided an update on its e-learning initiative, a project funded by the Waqf Fund. The Board appreciated BIBF for generating additional funding for the project from the industry and ensured its continued support.

Getting a good night’s sleep

s imperative, and there are foods that can actually

help you sleep better. Perhaps you already know of

some foods that will keep you up past your bedtime, like coffee

and cola, but there are foods that provide vitamins and minerals that trigger your body’s natural sleep signals, making you feel sleep and helping you stay asleep

once you’re there. Incorporate the following foods into your

diet to see just how much of a difference it can make to

your quality of sleep.

GrapeEating grape before bed has been an old wives’ tale , but as it turns out there’s a rea-son why this has been known to help sleep. It contains lycopene, an antioxidant in the body that has been shown to improve the way you sleep. (breakingmuscle)

CherriesYou don’t actually have to eat cherries before bed in order to get their benefit. Keep a bottle of cherry juice in the refrigerator and sip on it a few hours before you plan to retire for the night. You’ll help your body boost its own melatonin levels naturally, so don’t be surprised when you find that you can’t keep your eyes open around the 9 o’clock hour.

YogurtThe calcium in yogurt and other dairy products will help your body de-stress, which will help you fall asleep more quickly and avoid the wandering mind when trying to get to sleep. When eaten as a nighttime snack you’re also introducing good bac-teria to your digestive system.

WatermelonYou can enjoy this fruit and the nutrients it brings, especially if you’re having trouble sleeping. Watermelon is a source of lyco-pene, the same item found in tomatoes that earns toma-toes such a healthy repu-tation.

Actor Johnny Depp is in financial crisis due to his monthly expenditure of $2 million to maintain his

“ultra-extravagant” lifestyle, claims a lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles County Superior

Court on Tuesday by his former managers who are asking a judge to rule that the actor has no one but himself to blame for his financial troubles, reports hollywoodreporter.com.

In addition to owning multiple homes and a luxury yacht, Depp spends $30,000 a month on wine, travels by private jet and maintains 12 storage facilities housing his fine art and memorabilia collections.

The “Pirates Of The Caribbean” star filed suit against The Management Group (TMG) earlier this month alleging mishandling of his finances and seeking compensation of at least $25 million. (IANS)

Leonardo DiCaprio is all set to star in and produce

the adaptation of ‘The Black Hand’, a detective book written by Stephen Talty.

The studio has acquired the rights of the book and the ‘Revenant’ star is ready to put on

the producer’s hat for the project.

He will produce the movie through his banner Appian Way, along with three more producers. The

movie, based on the adaptation of a book

of same name, will hit shelves around April. It

is set in New York City summer of 1903, when a crime wave hit the city. The criminals always leave a calling card of the symbol of a black hand at the crime scenes. (TOI)

“Game of Thrones” actress Maisie Williams says people who have leaked the hit series

online, are “childish and annoying”.During an interview to Radio Times,

Williams, who plays Arya Stark in the hit fantasy series, also admitted that it “really upsets her” when the programmes are spoiled before official release, reports express.co.uk.

“It really, really upsets me, because, there’s only a certain group of people who would look at that anyway, compared to the audience that watches the show,” Williams said.

The 19-year-old added: “It hurts. It’s just like, oh we wanted to tell this story, and yeah, lots of people don’t want to read it, and don’t want to look at it. But then it’s even more annoying when you know (the leaks) might be from someone on the inside, and it’s just like... You’re trying to make something really cool, that is really cool.’ (IANS)

Arnold Schwarzenegger is in talks to return for the sequel,

which will be co-produced by Emmett/Furla/Oasis and Beijing-based Leomus Pictures.

Escape Plan 2, the sequel to Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 2013 prison-

break thriller, is heading east.Beijing-based Leomus Pictures

and Emmett/Furla/Oasis have partnered to co-finance and make the film as a China-U.S. co-production.

Stallone has signed on to reprise his role as a prison security

specialist, but Schwarzenegger’s return is still under discussion, a Leomus representative said. Miles Chapman, screenwriter on the first film, is back to script the sequel. Given how the first film’s release went, deepening the sequel’s connection to China, the world’s number-two film market, would appear a smart move. With Leomus handling local marketing and distribution, the original Escape Plan earned $40.9 million in the Middle Kingdom — a large slice of its $137 million global haul and considerably more than the $25 million the film took in North America.

Escape Plan 2 is expected to feature some Chinese story elements to deepen its local resonance, Leomus said.

Leomus is a partner with Hunan TV in the Chinese broadcaster’s $375 million slate financing deal with Lionsgate, which began in 2015. (hollywoodreporter.com)

Ben Affleck directs and acts in this one and though it may

not be in the same league as The Godfather, his film doesn’t fail to arrest your attention. While one might assume it solely revolves around gang wars, rivalry, deceit and murders, you’ll be glad to discover that love, friendship and redemption are an integral part of the film as well. If you are open to watching introspective crime dramas that double up as life lessons and a path to mull over the choices we make, you’ll love this one.

It’s also fascinating to see Affleck’s choice of roles of late. He doesn’t pick the heroic parts but opts for the reticent ones that conceal his inner turmoil. Be it in The Accountant or this film. While his stoic execution may seem dull for some, if you are not in it for the ‘drama’, you’ll prefer it instead.

The film has its issues though. For instance, the story lacks urgency and occasionally wanders around aimlessly. Luckily, that seems to be intentional as the impact lingers

on for much longer. A talented cast helps as well. Affleck is ably supported by Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, Elle Fanning and Chris Cooper.

The cinematography and art direction deserve a special mention. The bygone era has been recreated well. The vibrant Cuban culture and picturesque locales make for great visuals.

Live by Night is not an out-and-out gangster film. If you don’t go in expecting the same, you’ll enjoy watching it.

Some letters and calls that you may have agreed to do for a group you’re affiliated with might have to be taken care of today. Don’t be surprised if you spend a lot of your time on the phone. It might take a little persistence, as some of the people you need to reach may not be in. But you’re likely to get everything done. Your determination is strong. You may need to take care of paperwork related to financial matters today. You will pay bills, make deposits, or balance checkbooks. Whatever you need to handle, you will get it done, and done well. You might even find that you’re better off financially than you thought you were. In the evening, go to a movie and forget about money for a while.

You should be especially efficient in whatever work you need to get done today. Your natural eye for detail is especially sharp. You’re also feeling energetic and efficient, so don’t be surprised if others give you some admiring compliments. When the work is all done, you might reward yourself by making some definite plans for a vacation.

Your dreams might be especially intense now, and some could even be prophetic. You may have recently dreamed of an old friend you haven’t seen for a while. Don’t be surprised if you suddenly hear from this person. You might also come up with some previously unknown ideas for advancing yourself professionally.

Social events involving both old and new friends could prove especially satisfying at this time. You will be able to catch up with those you haven’t seen for a while. You might also be introduced to new people who prove valuable business contacts in the future. Expect good news, stimulating conversation, and a lot of reminiscing about the past with warm.

Today you might decide to get some annoying but necessary chores done. You have the energy to finish them and probably will, although you may go crazy from boredom in the meantime. Your mind should be especially active, so don’t be surprised if during the course of doing your chores you find the answers to questions you’ve been asking yourself for a long time.

Some information that you’ve been seeking for a long time might finally be unearthed today through your diligent efforts. This is going to increase your ability to take on whatever challenges you’re planning to address. Your already sharp business acumen is likely to be enhanced by whatever you discover. Be prepared for a lot of hard work and continued success over the next few months. Some volatile emotional matters that may have reared their heads over the past few days could finally be settled to the satisfaction of all involved. The subject of money may come up. Happiness reigns in the home, as all the members of your household are basically pleased with the way their lives are going. The appearance of some well-loved visitors may add to the contentment.

You may have let household tasks and chores go for a few days, so today you might decide to get them all done at once. You have the energy and the stamina to do it. However, take care not to get too caught up in little details that only you tend to notice. This can keep you from getting the most important chores done.

Some solid, honest communication between you and those you love is likely to clear up some confusion. Roles are more clearly defined, emotional problems clarified, and chores are more fairly allotted. This is going to make a big difference in your daily life. The removal of relationship issues will guarantee that the atmosphere is more harmonious from now on.

Today you might feel the need to get as much done as possible. You’re especially energetic, and you have stamina and focus, and so you should be able to accomplish whatever you want. Tasks and chores you may have put off finally get done today. Don’t work too hard, however. You will want to save some energy for tomorrow.

You might need to do some of the less exciting chores involved with creative or artistic projects today. You’re in the right frame of mind to get them done. Your efficiency is at a peak. A practical, no-nonsense manner marks all your interactions. By day’s end you should feel more than satisfied with what you’ve done.

India skipper Virat Kohli yesterday said he has faith

in Yuzvendra Chahal’s abilities after the leg spinner claimed six wickets to set up his country’s 75-run series-clinching

victory    in the third Twenty20 international in Bangalore.Chahal recorded his T20 best of

6-25 to help skittle out England for 127

in 16.3 overs. The visitors,

c h a s i n g 203, lost

e i g h t

wickets for eight runs in the space of 18 deliveries.

The 23-year-old Chahal became only the second bowler

in T20 cricket to get six wickets in

an innings after Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis achieved the feat twice with figures of 6-8 and 6-16.

C h a h a l ,

who received the man of the match and series award for his eight scalps in three games, got great support from seamer Jasprit Bumrah’s three wickets.

“I have a lot of faith in him, and he plays with a lot of confidence. He has a lot of skill and he has the character as well,” Kohli said of his wily spinner who played just his sixth T20 international.

The attacking spinner started England’s batting rot in the 14th over of the innings, getting dangermen Joe Root (42) and skipper Eoin Morgan (40) on consecutive deliveries to derail the tourists’ chase.

Root and Morgan had kept the chase alive with their 64-run third-wicket stand but the innings fell apart after their departure.

Chahal got three wickets in his fourth over to rip through

the England middle and lower order -- five batsmen

were out on zero -- as India won the series 2-1.

The hosts reined supreme against England after the hosts won the Test rubber

4-0 last year and triumphed 2-1 in the one-day internationals.

“Come the big game, even in the one-day series, series decider, he (Chahal) stepped up, and he stepped up again today. It’s a memorable series win for us, the whole tour,” Kohli said in the post-match presentation.

“It’s been a brilliant couple of months for the Indian team, going forward we know exactly what to do in each format,” he added.

Earlier scintillating half-centuries from Suresh Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni helped India post a mammoth 202 for six after being put into bat.

South Africa captain AB de Villiers hailed an “almost perfect performance” after his team crushed Sri Lanka by

121 runs in the second one-day international at Kingsmead on Wednesday.

He singled out Faf du Plessis and David Miller, who both hit centuries as South Africa recovered from a poor start and piled up 307 for six after being sent in on an unusually dry, slow Kingsmead pitch. Du Plessis (105) and Miller (117 not out) put on 117 for the fifth wicket off 136 balls after South Africa had been struggling at 108 for four.

South Africa’s total always seemed likely to be too many for the tourists to chase and so it proved, as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 186, giving South Africa a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

“It was a fantastic effort by Faf and David, an incredible partnership after being four down early on,” said De Villiers.

The batting was backed up by good bowling and lively fielding.

Arsenal’s Petr Cech said Tuesday’s shock loss to Watford was a “huge

setback” to the Gunners ahead of their meeting with the Premier League leaders this weekend.

First-half goals from Younes Kaboul and Troy Deeney gave visitors Watford a quick-fire 2-0 lead in Tuesday’s Premier League game and although Arsenal pulled one back through Alex Iwobi, the Hornets held on for three away points.

Defeat left Arsenal nine points behind Chelsea ahead of their trip across London to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

“This was a huge setback,” said Cech. “We wanted to put ourselves in a better position going into the weekend.

“I always say that at this level you cannot play 80 minutes, or 85. You have to play 90 minutes with full concentration and everybody on top of their game.

“We were second best in

the first half. We made so many bad passes, we lost every challenge, we were simply second best, as I said.”

Cech added: “In the second half we improved, we had a lot of chances. I thought we were brilliant second half, but obviously we only scored one goal.”

Tuesday’s match saw Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger continue his four-game touchline ban and Cech insisted they had paid when their veteran French boss questioned if the team were “mentally ready” to face Watford.

“We had a very bad start,” Cech said.“We were unlucky with the first goal

when it takes a big deflection and it goes in. Obviously it gave a lot of hope and motivation to Watford because this was something that lifted them,” the Czech Republic international added.

“But then I think we didn’t play well at all. It was too much for us to take in the first half and it’s very hard to say

why because we were prepared.“We were on back-to-back

wins, important wins, we had the momentum after the Burnley game and obviously the Southampton game went completely our way, exactly the way we wanted.”

For Watford, a first win in seven league games help them move eight points clear of the relegation zone and a delighted Kaboul said: “In the first half they couldn’t live with us.

“We were on top of everything from Troy (Deeney) to Heurelho Gomes -- all of us were brilliant. We did a terrific job and it will give us a lot of confidence for the rest of the season.

“Everyone on the pitch and the players who came on did a terrific job. We couldn’t have started better. We could have scored more, we knew they would come b a c k stronger and they did.” (AFP)

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has refused an offer to join Corinthians of Brazil

that would have included generous wages and a bullet-proof car.

The Ivory Coast star, 38, is out of contract after a spell at Montreal Impact and was offered $120,000 (110,000 euros) a week, a 24-hours-per-day translator, six return tickets to Europe -- and a bullet-proof car.

Drogba said on Twitter on Wednesday that he had spoken with the Corinthians president Roberto de Andrade to decline the offer.

“I’m very honoured... but it doesn’t feel like the right

move for me at this time,” wrote Drogba.

The club thanked the player for showing an interest.

Berlin

German clubs shattered the previous record in splashing

out 97.35 million euros ($105m) on fresh talent during the Bundesliga’s January transfer window.

Bayern Munich, Germany’s richest club, kept their purse closed but have signed Hoffenheim’s Germany pair Niklas Suele and Sebastian Rudy for next season.

However Bayern’s rivals took the chance to boost their squads.

The combined winter spending

of the Bundesliga’s 18 clubs, based on transfer sums according to transfermarkt.de, easily beat the previous record of 65 million euros set during the 2014/15 season.

However, the 97.35 million euros was dwarfed by the £215 million that Premier League clubs shelled out. Dortmund made one of the most eye-catching buys when they snapped up Sweden’s 17-year-old striker Alexander Isak -- dubbed the next Zlatan Ibrahimovic -- from AIK.

Isak heads a trio of teenage talent which Bundesliga clubs want to nurture despite no experience in a top league.

Promising Jamaican teenager Leon Bailey, 19, joined Bayer Leverkusen from Belgium’s Genk. France’s Dayot Upamecano, 18, swapped Red Bull Salzburg for RB Leipzig, who are having a stellar first season in Germany’s top flight.

Defensive stalwart Branislav Ivanovic

ended his hugely successful Chelsea career yesterday when he signed for Zenit Saint Petersburg for an undisclosed fee. The 32-year-old Serbian has signed a two-and-a-half-year c o n t r a c t with an option of a n o t h e r year.

“I had a s t r o n g

desire to return to Russia,” Ivanovic, who scored five goals in 54 matches for Lokomotiv Moscow in 2006-07 before joining Chelsea in 2008, told the Zenit website.

“I feel high motivation and a desire to continue playing at the highest level.”

Ivanovic won two Premier League titles, one Champions League, one Europa League, three FA Cups and one League Cup during his spell at Chelsea.

He is one of only five foreign players -– along with Didier Drogba, John Obi Mikel, Petr Cech and Gianfranco Zola -– to reach the 300-game

C h e l s e a tweeted that Ivanovic, who

Marcel Kittel (Quick-Step Floors) left it late but proved he is the

strongest sprinter at the Dubai Tour with his second stage win in two days.

The German came through a congested sprint to beat Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) into second once again, with Jakub Mareczko (Wilier Triestina) in third. Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) was in the hunt for the stage win but found himself boxed in just when he appeared to be moving forward. Kittel’s win extends Quick-Step Floors’ impressive start to the season and the German will wear the leaders jersey on stage 3. He is on course to win the Dubai Tour for the second year running.

Once again Kittel could count in excellent work from his well-drilled team. They kept the break of Mark Christian (Aqua Blue), Simone Andreetta (Bardiani-CSF), Jempy Drucker (BMC), Peter Williams (One Pro Cycling), and Yousif Mirza (UAE Abu Dhabi) in check throughout the day.

The five-man move jumped clear

in the opening 20 kilometres of racing and built up a lead of over four minutes on the flat, 188km stretch to Ras al-Khaimah.

Drucker claimed both intermediate sprints before sitting up and allowing the rest of the break to bask in the glory of the Dubai sun, but their efforts were once again in vain. This is a race designed for sprinters and only an extreme miscalculation would upset the odds.

Lotto NL-Jumbo briefly looked in trouble when they lost ground inside the final 3 kilometres as Bob Jungels once again ratcheted up the pace, while Bardiani CSF, BMC Racing and Wilier Triestina swamped what was already a crowded peloton.

Despite a more determined opposition, Quick-Step once again got their tactics right. They did, however, concede the front to Lotto NL-Jumbo with 1.5km to go and the Dutch squad were well placed as the final lead-out men positioned their sprinters but Kittel, even when there’s still work to be done, is match for anyone on this form.

He started his sprint on the outside,

almost level with Cavendish, but in the space of a few pedal strokes the entire nature of the sprint changed. Whereas the road opened up for Kittel, with a smooth passage to the line, Cavendish was left blocked by Groenewegen, who was starting to fade just as Kittel came over the top. The Manxman banged his handlebars in frustration, once again robbed of the chance to really test himself against Kittel. However, the German will have cared little for the Dimension Data rider’s plight.

Although this was a closer affair compared to stage 1, Kittel still looked the best sprinter on the road. His lead-out is supreme but he still has the form to finish off the job. Two from two, he will take some stopping. (CyclingNews)
