INTRODUCTION

DTH stands for DIRECT-TO-HOME television.

DTH is defined as:

The reception of satellite programmers with a

personal dish in an individual home.

DTH does away with the need for the local cable operator

and puts the broadcaster directly in touch with

consumer .

HISTORY

DTH services were first proposed in INDIA in 1996. But was notapproved due to the concerns over national security.

Finally, in 2000 DTH was allowed and it was Doordarshan whichmake it possible to provide its facilities to consumers from 1st April2000.

Broadcasters like STAR and ZEE are pushing hard for DTH servicesin INDIA.

The operators were required to setup earth stations in INDIA within12 month for getting license of broadcasting whose cost was $2.14million and will be valid for 10 years.

HOW DOES DTH DIFFER FROM CABLE TV?

In DTH, TV channels would be transmitted from the satellite to asmall dish antenna of the subscriber's home.

The broadcaster directly connects to the user. The middlemen likelocal cable operators are not there in the picture.

DTH followed cable TV in Urban while in Rural, it was riding on itsown but the cable TV is limited in Urban areas.

DTH will be definitely more expensive than cable as it exists today.

IS DTH SUPERIOR TO CABLE TV?

DTH offers better quality picture than cable TV.

DTH offers stereophonic sound effects.

It can also reach remote areas where terrestrialtransmission and cable TV have failed to penetrate.

DTH has also allows for interactive TV services such as

Internet access, video conferencing and e-mail.

The thing that DTH has going for it is that the powerfulbroadcasting companies like Star, Zee, etc are pushing for it.

DTH-BENEFITS

Benefits of DTH extends to all sections of the society since DTH

has a reach in all areas whether it is remote or urban , it provides

equal benefits to everyone. Benefits of DTH are listed below:

Cost effective communication, information and entertainment to

all . Small size terminals can provide up to 4000 TV channels and

2000 radio channels through a click of a button and thus brings

worlds at least information, news, entertainment to your home .

DTH services bypasses mediators and thus content provider

comes with customer directly. DTH services are transparent providing digital quality video,

audio, radio, and IP to all at equal prices and other benefits with

reliability.

FUTURE PROSEPECTS OFDTH

The DTH market in INDIA is relatively increase day -by-day. In thepast 5 months, two solid competitors like Airtel ,Reliance, SunDirrect, Tata Sky have entered the market .

In coming 5 years.... We have managed to overtake Japan as thelargest DTH market in Asia.

In the next 5 years (by 2014) we will be able to add another 30million subscribers .(which is about the same as the population of Belgium, Portugal andGreece put-together!)
