their gifts by being involved in numerous activities. Athletes are involved in music and service. Forensics competitors are in athletics. Theatre and music students are involved in academic and faith activities. This requires a significant amount of time, commitment and coordination by Principals, advisors, teachers, coaches, students and parents. Schedules are closely coordinated so tournaments, theatre productions, concerts and tours are scheduled for maximum participation.

An amazing example of this balance and the importance of it to JPII leadership is the planning that is currently underway for the 2013 March for Life in Washington, DC. The Teens for Life group, under the leadership of Father Charles, is currently working with Randy Nelson and the activities office to look at game scheduling next January so that Shanley athletes can participate in the March for Life trip.

Participation and balance are joined by achievement in the trifecta of extracurricular activities. Shanley competes in Class A in all activities with the exception of football, which has 4 classes of competition. We are one of the smallest Class A schools in North Dakota along with Bismarck St. Mary’s and Valley City. The majority of Class A schools have enrollments 3-5 times greater than Shanley.

Despite the enrollment handicap, Shanley teams have excelled. All teams are regular qualifiers for the State Tournaments. A few of the noteworthy achievements in the past few years include:

if not the only High School in North Dakota to qualify all teams and activities for this Award. This is a strong testament to the balance and priorities maintained by the students, teachers, coaches, parents and Shanley Activities Director, Randy Nelson.

The pinnacle of academic achievement for High Schools occurred this fall. Five Shanley seniors qualified as Merit Scholar semifinalists for their scores on the PSAT taken in their junior year. One Shanley senior qualified for the National Achievement Scholarship Program for “outstanding Black American high school students”. There were 12 semifinalists named in the 8 metro area high schools of North, South, Davies, West Fargo, Oak Grove, Park Christian, Moorhead and Shanley. Shanley seniors make-up less than 4% of area seniors but represent almost 50% of area Merit Scholars. All six seniors were recently notified of being Merit Scholar Finalists.

Extracurricular activities are an important part of developing the total person. These activities require time management and prioritization, teamwork, goal setting and significant effort and motivation. There are dozens of activities covering service, faith, music, theatre, forensics, athletics, foreign language, academics and leadership. The participation of JPII students in these activities is close to double that of the area public schools. The extensive offerings and small school environment focusing on each individual make it possible for over 85% of Shanley students to participate in activities.

In addition to participation, students stretch

Shanley

vocalists received 4 individual and 6 ensemble Star Ratings at State Music

In addition to these specific achievements, the theatre and music departments continue to excel in participation and the performance of concerts, tours and productions. The 46th annual First Nighter and spring musical will be performed the week of March 12th. The choir will complete their annual tour, this year to Memphis and Nashville, later in March. Close to 50% of Shanley students are involved in theatre and music. The elementary schools feature vibrant music and arts opportunities with productions, field trips and of course the very moving Advent Programs.

The total person aspect that completely differentiates our schools is the focus on faith and service. Our faith is celebrated and taught every hour of every day. Chris Mering highlighted this when their family was contemplating moving from Jamestown to attend Catholic Schools. When she was walking up to Shanley she could hear the daily morning prayers over the loudspeakers on the outside of the school. Mass

is celebrated as a community each week in each school. Adoration takes place every week in the Presentation Chapel at Shanley. Reconciliation is available each week and in community services during Advent and Lent. 40 days for Life prayer vigils and the Teens for Life trip to the March for Life are offered to end abortion. Prayer reflections are included in the Daily Emails sent to all families.

Prayer requests are solicited by all of our JPII Fund student phonathon callers. The annual Memorial Mass is offered for all of the souls of the departed members of our Catholic schools community who have been memorialized during the year. Alumni are included through Deacon Alerts that are sent out by the Development Office whenever a member of their class is impacted by a life event and prayers are needed. Cemetery service through gravesite maintenance is offered annually to members of our extended family who no longer live in the area or are unable to maintain the graves of their loved ones. The Class of 2010 donated a cross for the McCormick Gymnasium wall as their senior gift. We also recently completed the NCEA Assessment of Catechesis Religious Education and our students were very knowledgeable of their faith as reflected in their advanced and proficient scores. The faith instruction provided in the classrooms is providing an excellent foundation of our Catholic faith. These are but a few examples of the many, many ways that our faith is integral to our schools.

As Deacons, the living of our faith and Gospel spirit through service is a major focus and culture of our schools. The total number of service hours performed through our schools by our students, staff and families approaches 30,000 hours per year. Tens of thousands of dollars are raised for charities. Service projects are conducted at class and school levels. Student leadership of service is completed through the Charity and Justice class, Deacon Leadership Team, Shanley Ambassadors, Key Club, Philanthropy and Youth Team, Teens for Life and the religion classes at all grade levels. Over 40% of Shanley students belong to Key Club whose focus is service. A few examples of the Gospel spirit alive in our schools include:

Official Press Release

Feb. 6, 2012

Most Rev. Samuel J. Aquila, Bishop of Fargo, announced today the hiring of Dr. Michael P. Smith as Superintendent of the Blessed John Paul II Catholic Schools.

Dr. Smith earned his doctorate in education from Saint Mary’s University in Minneapolis, where he also acquired his master’s degree. He received his bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Elementary Education at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minn. His doctoral dissertation addressed Differentiated Instruction and Teacher Flow.

In a letter to Blessed John Paul II Catholic School board members, Bishop Aquila wrote that he is confident Dr. Smith, “will continue the good work we have begun in the Blessed John Paul II Catholic Schools through our ongoing strategic planning process. He has experience teaching and serving as a principal both in the United States and abroad. He will begin his position as Superintendent this summer as we begin the 2012-2013 academic year.”

Deacon David Haney has served as interim superintendent since May 3, 2010. “After Dr. Smith joins us this summer,” Bishop Aquila noted in the letter, “Deacon David Haney will continue in the diocesan positions of Chairman of the Board for the Blessed John Paul II Catholic Schools and Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Fargo.”

Other recent changes in the administration of JPII Catholic Schools include the naming of Lori Hager as Director of Marketing, Recruitment and Admissions and the revision of Mary Beth Traynor’s position toward a greater focus on school accreditation. Her new title is Director of Accreditation and Student Services. She and Cindy Hutchins, principal of Nativity Elementary, Fargo, will serve as co-chairs of the accreditation steering committee.

Blessed John Paul II Catholic Schools include Shanley High School, Sullivan Middle School, and Nativity and Holy Spirit elementary schools, all in Fargo. A future elementary school is planned for the new site of Holy Cross Catholic Church in West Fargo. The new site of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in the Horace area will also allow for a future elementary school.

Dr. Michael P. Smith named Superintendent of Blessed John Paul II Catholic Schools

What would you do for an orange headband? Deacon family members Sarah Lacher (’98), her brother Michael Lacher (’91) and their brother-in-law John Andrews (married to Marie Lacher Andrews ’94) ran through

fire, crawled through mud and endured up to 10,000 volts of electrical shock to get theirs. Sarah and her Navy Reservist teammates, Michael and John, participated in the Tough Mudder event at Devil’s Head Resort in Merrimac, WI to raise money for charity.

Obviously participating in a Tough Mudder event is about more than just receiving an orange piece of fabric, but the three teammates are quick to point out, “the only way to get one of those headbands is to cross the finish line”. And while crossing the finish line of this 10-mile military-style obstacle course is the ultimate goal of everyone who participates (although according to the Tough Mudder website – www.toughmudder.com – only 78% of participants finish the event), the Tough Mudder philosophy

is focused around teamwork and camaraderie.

Every one of the 10,000+ participants at each event must recite the following Tough Mudder pledge at the start line:

As a Tough Mudder I pledge that…* I understand that Tough Mudder is not a race but a challenge.* I put teamwork and

camaraderie before my course time.* I do not whine – kids whine.* I help my fellow

Mudders complete the course.* I overcome all fears.

This philosophy makes it easy to understand why Tough Mudder raises money for the Wounded Warrior Project by offering a $25 registration discount to participants who pledge to raise $150. The Wounded Warrior Project is a non-profit organization that helps American servicemen and servicewomen who have been severely injured transition from active duty to civilian life. The for-profit Tough Mudder has raised nearly $1.8 million for the Wounded Warrior Project since it began just two years ago.

People participate in Tough Mudder for many different reasons. John had begun a regular regimen of exercise just to get healthy when a co-worker introduced him to Tough Mudder. The challenge had him hooked. It wasn’t long after that when Michael jumped on board, and Sarah had been training for the Fargo Marathon when she decided marathon running was just too boring for her taste. Tough Mudder is anything but boring and all three agree that the adrenaline rush it invokes is also addicting. John is already signed up to participate in his next Tough Mudder event in Indiana in November. Others are also obviously hooked as the number of events is growing from 14 scheduled in 2011 to 28 scheduled across the country in 2012.

Sarah, Michael and John have more than just their orange headbands to show for crossing the finish line. (Both John and Michael also had the Tough Mudder logo tattooed on their bodies within hours of finishing the challenge.) More than that however, they have the pride of accomplishment and the knowledge of how to live the Tough Mudder pledge both on the course and in their daily lives.

Class of 1951(60 Year Reunion)

50 years apart were melted away in two days for 50 of the 1961 Shanley graduating class at their Reunion in August.

The piano music by former classmate Tom Conoboy, delicious banquet, night lights outside the Radisson windows, and joy of visiting with friends from our high school years added up to a fantastic weekend!

We started our freshman year at Shanley in 1957 by stepping over debris from the worst tornado to hit Fargo, with the gym and several classrooms too damaged to use. We graduated with the Vietnam war developing, with several joining the military, some for decades and leaving with high rank. Careers have taken some far away, with many teachers, medical professionals, and homemakers,

Shanley’s class of 1966 met in Las Vegas the last weekend of April to celebrate its 45 year reunion. The setting allowed classmates living in that part

of the country, particularly CA and AZ, to join us that might not be able to make it back to Fargo. It also afforded at least one classmate to check off one item on his “bucket list”.

Fifteen classmates were in attendance, many with spouses, or other family members to not only renew old acquaintances but enjoy new experiences in a unique setting. Some were also able to visit local family members.

The group gathered Friday evening in the “get reacquainted” session at the Hilton Garden Inn. Originally scheduled to be pool side it was easily moved indoors to allow for the “meet and greet”. Introductions were made. Stories were told. Pictures were reviewed. And the party rolled on

many now with grandchildren. Most of us are retired now. We’ve lost 9 of our 110 classmates to the Lord, lost touch with a few*, missed those who couldn’t come, and changed a lot.

Highlights included seeing classmen for the first time in almost 50 years—Karen Galvin Nichols, Joe Busek, Janet Rene Polosky , Audrey Fisher Anderson, Judy Leclerc Ertsgaard , Tom Marsden, and Patty Dullea Dwyer, mother of 11 who drove from Colorado. We appreciated the many spouses and companions who joined our fun.

We relived our memories of those special years with our teachers --mostly Presentation sisters, several of whom we met again this weekend-- and priests including Fr. Leo Stelten who led Mass in the new Shanley chapel. We also loved meeting again our sisters at their new home, including one of our lst grade teachers—Sr. Grace Marie (now Sr. Geraldine) who taught 60 kids and today has ‘kicked the habit’, is still about 4’5”, and just retired as manager of a retirement home. Reality hit hard as we learned of our classmates and instructors who are seriously ill or have joined the Lord.

Some took a tour of Fargo, amazed at the disappearance of our football field, Shanley School, and most of Sacred Heart Academy where the nuns lived, which is now condos. We passed the churches noting changes, including the newest, near the new Diocesan offices in South Fargo. More amazing was the new Shanley school and football field with

artificial turf, named after our special social studies teacher and coach, Sid Cichy. I substitute teach there now, and with three grandkids attending there and at the adjoining middle grades’ Sullivan School, believe it is still is the best place to learn skills for a successful life and to meet good people.

Although most knew either live in the area or knew of the city’s changes, traveling the sites and recalling 50 years of change including the Mall, freeway and Microsoft, was a time warp. Our world has changed in 50 years. We thank the Shanley alumni office for helping us with mailings and posters, as well as former reunion coordinator Sharon Lepine, and coordinators Karen Evje Opgrand and Karen Scheffler Meyer. Reunion books with photos are $20 for those who didn’t attend, from [email protected].

*Please contact us at Karen’s e mail if you know the address/phone/email of these Shanley graduates: Ed Biren, Kathleen Collins Fisher, Diane Hersch Green, Diane Olson Hale, Eldora Miller, Pete Schuck, Faith Hall Smith, Al Wiley.

Wanting to stay in touch, we encourage viewing our l961 Yearbook and current news (with many reunion photos!) on the www.shanley.com website. John and I invite classmates to our home for a winter social in Chandler, Ariz. at l p.m. on Feb. 22, 2012 —details on website or [email protected].

with plans made on how to spend the rest of the weekend.

Saturday evening was a more “formal” setting with a full agenda of remembering deceased classmates, teachers and a coach followed by dinner and dancing throughout the night to the sound of an entertaining DJ. This gathering started with pictures of all being taken in the poses of choice!

Obituaries of classmates Mike Crary, Luella Dukart Mack, Pat Fettes, Steve Follet, Linda Kreyer Roemeling, Rosie Lang Rheault, Joe Spier, Susan Turner; teachers Charles Simonitsch (father of Margaret Simontsch Crummy), Hildegarde Taylor (mother of Kathy Taylor Valenta); school board members Stanley Duginski (father of Helen Duginski Eaton), Joseph Kuppich (father of Dorothy Kuppich Hagemann) and coach Bob Hanish (father of Charlie Hanish) were read by various classmates.

Classmates that served in the military were honored

with a brief presentation of their service to our country, including those that have given their life for our country.

A pictorial presentation of classmates’ pictures, current and years gone by, were continually run throughout the evening. Prizes, i.e. memorabilia of Shanley, were awarded as well.

It was a night for many that had no end as most adjourned from the banquet room to the hotel lobby to continue to play “Did you know?” from the year 1966.

The commitment was made to reconvene in 5 years in Fargo to commemorate our 50th. A possible “planning session” might be necessary prior to 2016 on a cruise up the West Coast. Stay tuned…

A special thank you to all the planning committee headed by Dan Deutsch, Mike Flynn, Gayle Kranz Noraker and Donnie Rodger. See you in Fargo in 2016.

Who would have thought that your 40th reunion would turn out to be the better of the entire prior ones? For many of us attending it was just that! We came "home" on a beautiful September week-end to hugs, laughter, more hugs and some happy tears. Starting with the Shanley Homecoming on Friday night we had our "classy ladies", Mary (Doyle) Goldberg, Mary Ann (Clower) King, Deb Mickelson, Mary Ann (Klien) Mehl, Deb (Lapinski) Kullberg, and our ‘71 Queen, Mary (Collins) Johnson, ride in a convertible and part of the parade. So cool! From there we went to the Radisson for a night that found us staying up WAY past our normal bed time. Yes at 58, if you make it to midnight you’re lucky, let alone till 2-2:30 on BOTH nights. On Saturday

everyone was on their own with some shopping, re-laxing, and golfing. It was golfing that we joined the class of 69 and 70 and shared some cold "pop" and watched who has stayed

in shape and could still golf! Does the name Cichy sound familiar? Saturday night was at Edgewood's "Divots" with the weather as good as it can get on a fall night! It was a great way to end the night with Al Danielski being MC and doing what he does best! Make us laugh! We all would like to give thanks to Shanley High School and are very proud to say that we are from or live in Fargo today! It is this foundation (the Shanley Community) that has molded us, and brought us together for such a fun weekend. One that we all want to do over in 5 years! 2016 we will be back! Thank you all so much who came, and made this weekend so special!

Class of 1991 (20 Year Reunion)The class of 1991 started off the reunion weekend on July 29th with a gathering at JT Cigarro’s. On Saturday, there was a golf outing at the Fargo Country Club. Also, there was an opportunity for classmates and their families to gather at Lindenwood Park. After some fun in the sun, classmates headed to the Ramada for a night of lively conversation, great food, SHS trivia, and, of course, plenty of tunes from 1987-1991. The weekend culminated with a tour of

Shanley. A great time was had by all! Thank you to Eric Johnson for leading the reunion committee.

Our reunion started Friday night July 8th at the Edgewood Chalet. It was a hot and sticky summer night that ended with a smashing thunder and lightening storm. We mingled and snacked and listened to music and perspired. But most of all we laughed. Saturday included a tour of the “new” Shanley in South Fargo, followed by a mass at St. Anne and Joachim church led by our own Father Paul Duchschere. From there we headed to the Howard Johnson for another night of big smiles, picture taking and pizza devouring. Thanks so much to the Shanley alumni offfice for providing a great picture board with fun snapshots of the class of 1981. We are happy to report that we had 45 classmates plus guests over the course of the 2 nights, a great turnout. We had classmates with newborns and classmates with grandkids. So this is what they call middle age. Good fun!

SHANLEY’S SPIRIT IS A TRADITIONBy Jackie Kvamme Cox, class of ‘61

Carole Lepird Kvamme, class of l937, is with her daughter Jackie Cox, ‘61, at the over 50-year graduate Reunion on Homecoming Day in September. They’re surrounded by Carole’s three Sullivan/Shanley great grandkids: Davis Ekman, 8th grade, wearing the Homecoming t-shirt, Paris Ekman, 11th, in her football cheerleading uniform, and Peyton 6th, in a 2009 State Championship t-shirt.

The social was at the Fargo Country Club prior to the football game, when Shanley upset #1-ranked Wahpeton, 37-0 on artificial turf at the new Sid Cichy football field.

Despite the continuing spirit, the school has changed a lot in the 74 years since Carole’s graduation. She was a student at Sacred Heart Academy in junior high, returning her junior and senior year as a boarder as her home in West Fargo meant city buses and cars during our difficult winters. She recalls having calluses on her knees from daily prayers. There were no sports. Yearbooks began in l938, and several classmates remained close friends all of Carole’s life. At 91, she was the oldest at the reunion, but she is proud the Shanley

tradition continues in her great grandchildren. Grandkids Paige and Tom Radeck, Fargo, also attended.

Carole married Fred Kvamme, and they had eight children, several attending Holy Spirit, one of three Catholic elementary schools. Steve, who lives in

West Fargo with his family, also graduated from Shanley. There were only boy’s sports.

When Jackie began at Shanley as a freshman in l957, secondary classes had moved to the new 12th Ave. brick building beside the convent, which was severely damaged by a tornado just before classes began. Today the brick school has been replaced

by condos and a new school built in South Fargo. The junior high, previously at St. Anthony’s, is now adjacent to Shanley and named Sullivan. The Sacred Heart building transitioned from diocesan offices into condos, and recently new diocesan offices were built adjacent to Shanley once again.

Today, students wear red, white and navy uniforms. Girls have several sports, and can earn a Letterman’s jacket in academics and in sports. Another elementary is planned. Shanley is on top in sports, music and academics, and the Deacon spirit lives on-- it’s a family tradition.

Our Beloved FacultyThe Deacon • Spring 2012

The death of Michael Collins, F.S.C., President of De La Salle High School in Minneapolis, on January 8, 2012, brought back a flood of memories to many of the members of the Shanley Community who were privileged to have known him. For those involved in music, drama, and especially the First Nighter, some of those memories were their most meaningful and valued of their time at Shanley.

Brother Michael Collins made his first never-to-be-forgotten appearance on stage at Shanley during the spring of 1965, when he brought a group of singers from De La Salle High School to entertain our student body. These young men were very talented, but Brother Michael, lead singer in several songs, was sensational. This was the memory that the Class of ’68 held when we learned several years later that he would be with us our senior year as Assistant Principal.

Before he created a Boys’ Chorus, became Principal and later Superintendent, and encouraged Shanley’s first endowment through GROW, he volunteered to direct the music for Shanley’s second musical – “Plain and Fancy.” (Those of us who were in that production hold the distinction of being among the very few people in America who actually remember any of the songs from that “not-so-well-known” play) He went on to direct the singers and orchestra for ten more productions, including “Hello Dolly” in 1970, which still holds the all-time attendance record for Shanley musicals.

Brother’s enormous musical talent – a voice that left an indelible impression on all those who heard it – his great skill in bringing out the best performances in his students, and his commitment to excellence were amazing, but his impact goes wider and deeper.

Brother Michael saw the First Nighter to be a great opportunity to build and celebrate community. Literally hundreds of people – students, staff members, parents, friends – helped make it a success. With Brother Andrew directing, Brother Michael Lee doing the sound, classroom teachers directing students to set-up table and chairs, parents sewing costumes and decorating, almost everyone helped and then could share in the elation and satisfaction of the performances. As Brother Michael often said,

“When something good happens for one of us (at Shanley), it happens for all of us.” This perspective carried over to sports, academics and other activities we shared.

Both Brothers Andrew and Michael were committed to double-casting the lead roles to give more young people the chance to shine. Some were clearly musically gifted from the beginning, but the search was always on to discover new talent, not with the goal of displacing others but rather building the self-esteem and confidence of those who didn’t believe they had any talent at all.

At the gatherings that were a part of his funeral, many former students reminisced about the influence he had on their lives. Two significant “gifts” were recognized. The first was the gift of music, that some of his former students have made careers in music and theatre, but that so many came to love music, theatre and dance, and have been enriched by the performing arts throughout their lives.

The second was the sense of both wonder and gratitude that a man with such a spectacular voice, one who could have made a career for himself as a performer, and perhaps could have become very successful in the eyes of the world, chose to dedicate

Distinguished Young Woman of ND – Keyna HoseltonBy: Tracy Frank, INFORUM

What’s Happening in our Schools

FARGO – Keyna Hoselton is a vibrant young woman with a passion for dance and a strong faith life.

The 18-year-old Fargo woman was recently named Distinguished Young Woman of North Dakota, a competition similar to a pageant but based more on scholarship, Hoselton said.

Hoselton, daughter of Scott and Cindy Hoselton, was awarded $500 in cash scholarships during the statewide scholarship program for high school girls held Nov. 27 in Fargo.

Hoselton, a senior at Shanley High School in Fargo, decided to compete for the title after a friend, who won the competition last year, recommended she participate.

“I loved it. It was a really fun experience,” Hoselton said. “It was fun to meet the other girls who were doing it, too. We’re all really confident in ourselves and they were just really interesting. I would definitely recommend it.”

Hoselton submitted her school transcripts and college entrance exam scores, which counted toward 20 percent of her overall score.

Hoselton also gave a speech, where she talked about the importance of following your dreams.

“I want to go into dance performance, so I think it’s very important to have the courage to pursue whatever you want with your life, even though it’s not guaranteed you’ll be successful,” she said.

During the interview category, which accounts

for a quarter of a participant’s score, Hoselton answered questions about world issues, her core values, problems her generation faces and what she’s most proud of in her generation.

“I talked about our generation’s courage to stand up for what we believe in,” Hoselton said. “Something I would change about our generation is our selfishness, people’s need for things.”

She choreographed and performed a jazz dance number for the talent competition. And in the fitness category, she had to learn a cardio-fitness routine and then perform it with the other contestants during the competition.

Throughout the next year, Hoselton will represent North Dakota at various public events. In June, she travels to Mobile, Ala., to participate in community service projects and the national Distinguished Young Woman competition.

Distinguished Young Women, known as America’s Junior Miss until changing its name in 2010, is a national scholarship program for high school girls founded in 1958 in Mobile.

Hoselton participates in a variety of school activities such as the American Math Competition and church activities like Teens for Life, which raises awareness for pro-life issues, but her passion is for performing.

She has been dancing since she was four years old

and has three older siblings who all danced. Hoselton has taken ballet, tap, jazz, point and modern dance at Camria Ballet Academy in Moorhead.

She has participated in school musicals, Trollwood shows, and was named Concert Chorale Outstanding Soprano and Outstanding Soloist.

She plans to go to Oklahoma City University to major in dance performance. After college, she hopes to perform in musical theater.

“I really love performing. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do,” she said. “It’s a rush. It’s really exciting, especially with huge audiences. It’s exciting affecting that many people.”

A Deacon Profileby Todd Mickelson

to work. They would be leaving the community that frequented the business. Last but not least, they would be incurring the cost of tuition for 4 children in the Fargo Catholic Schools.

They enrolled Ray and Sarah in Sullivan Middle School and Melissa and Jennifer in Shanley High School for the 2005-06 school year. They are now in their 7th year in the Fargo Catholic Schools. Their youngest child, Sarah, will graduate from Shanley in May. Melissa, Jennifer and Ray graduated from Shanley in 2007, 2009 and 2011, respectively. They have incurred tuition costs for 14 years of high school and 5 years of middle school. There have been countless miles and hours of commuting and family separation.

They wouldn’t do anything different. Chris explains that their children have received a very good education, established friendships, immersed themselves in activities and experienced the small school, faith environment that had been missing. Chris has been very involved in the schools both as a volunteer and as an employee in the kitchen. Ray has traveled from Jamestown and adjusted work schedules to attend their children’s activities. The Mering family has been an integral part of the Fargo Catholic Schools.

As they prepare for Sarah’s graduation and the subsequent move back to Jamestown, Chris and Ray feel the investment in their children’s faith and total person education was worth all of the sacrifice. The Mering family legacy in our schools will live on long after their return to Jamestown Their story and commitment to the formation of their children provide a wonderful witness. We are blessed to call them Deacons.

Ray & Chris Mering were all settled in Jamestown, ND in 2004. They had owned and operated Jetstream Carwash for 22 years. Their four younger children had grown up in Jamestown and were enrolled in grades 5,6,8 and 10. However, something was missing.

Their children had attended St John’s Catholic grade school but there was no Catholic education available in Jamestown beyond 6th grade. They missed the sense of community that came with the small school environment where faith is a focus. Chris had also attended Catholic schools through 8th grade in New Rockford. They began to look at their options to get all of their children back into Catholic schools.

I received the first phone call from Chris early in the 2004-05 school year. They were looking into the Catholic middle school and high school programs in Bismarck and Fargo. The Merings had family in both cities and explained that they were considering moving so their children could have a Catholic education. Numerous conversations ensued and they scheduled tours and meetings with Sullivan and Shanley administrators.

It was a heart wrenching decision. They would be moving their children from their childhood home and established friends. They would have

to maintain two residences so Ray could continue to run the family business. The family would be separated as Ray frequently commuted 100 miles

Annual Memorial MassThe 39th Annual Memorial Mass was held at Sts. Anne and Joachim Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 on All Saints Day. The annual Memorial Mass at Shanley High School was originated in GROW (Greatness Requires Our Willingness) 38 years ago for members of the Shanley family who had passed away and as an opportunity to raise funds for Shanley High School through Memorials. This Mass is said each year to remember and pray for Blessed John Paul II Catholic Schools Network and Shanley High School alumni and friends who were memorialized during the preceding year. This Memorial Mass is attended by family members of those who have been memorialized and Shanley High School students and staff. The Mass exercises our duty and dignity to care for the souls of the faithful departed as part of the JP II Mission”…to teach the total person and foster the following of Christ in an environment inspired by the Gospel Spirit , as taught by the Catholic Church”

2011 Shanley AuctionSaturday, April 30, 2011 was an exciting and important night for the Fargo Catholic Schools Network. The 27th Annual Shanley Auction was held that night at the Fargo Holiday Inn, hosting over 400 faithful and generous sup-porters of the school. This event was a culmination of many months of ef-fort put forth by countless volunteers on behalf of our students. Last year’s gala, chaired by parents Brian & Marilyn Bjoralt and Kevin & Brenda Wolf, was a huge success generating more than $325,000 in bids. Highlighting the evening’s generosity was the additional donation by guests of $69,000 for technology needs, including the installation of remaining classroom white-

boards as well as providing a base for wireless applica-tions to be implemented at the high school level. This year’s Auction is scheduled for Saturday, April 28th, 2012. We encourage you to join with other alumni, parents and friends in making a cash or tangible gift to this very important gala or plan to attend what is sure to be another festive and successful Shanley Auction. To make a donation, reserve tickets or join a committee, please contact Lee Hoedl, Auction Director at [email protected].

The majority are funded through an endowment with a few funded annually. Many of the endowed scholarships were initiated as a memorial to a deceased loved one who valued Catholic Education. The current endowed scholarships provide approxi-mately $42,000 annually and include:

The Joy of Giving

A Catholic Educa-tion for all has been a long-standing goal of the Church and a major legacy of The Presentation Sisters in founding Catholic Schools in Fargo. Achieving that goal has taken

many forms over the years. Tuition assistance, work study programs, charitable donations and more recently, endowed scholarships have pro-vided support for families who desired a Catholic Education for their children but were unable to pay full tuition. The JPII Catholic Schools cur-rently offer multiple sources of support including a tuition plan based on Adjusted Gross Income, a multiple student family plan and scholarships. The increasing cost of Catholic Education has made this commitment very challenging. We re-cently asked our alumni from 1966-1975 to share their knowledge of the cost of a Shanley education from those years. We received many responses including from Al Danielski, ‘71 who shared Brother Paul’s registration letter from Febru-ary, 1965. Shanley tuition was $210 per year. For those on the “Parish Payment Plan”, the families paid $150 and the parish paid $60. The family’s portion of the tuition was 4% of the per capita income of Fargo families in the mid 60’s. This low cost was due to the religious orders who taught in our schools. Shanley tuition today is $5,200 before adding fees. These costs represent approximately 15% of per capita income in Fargo today. A Catholic Edu-cation today can be out of reach for many families who don’t have access to the AGI and tuition as-sistance plans available to lower income families. This increases the need for scholarship funds, both endowed and funded annually. The stories abound of generous donors who made a Fargo Catholic Education available since 1882 through annual gifts. The first endowed scholarship, ac-cording to Shanley historians, was the Ken Fis-cher Memorial Scholarship established in GROW. Endowed Scholarships are funded through a donation to the Foundation. There have been a number of new scholarships established this year.

The Madeleine Kaiser Skogen Memorial • Scholarship was established this year through a $101,000 gift from Madeleine’s estate. Mad-eleine was a 1929 graduate of Sacred Heart Academy. The Louis J. Keller Memorial Scholarship was • established this year through a $96,000 gift from Louis’s estate. Mr. Keller has grandchil-dren currently attending JPII Schools. The Mark & Lenore Sweeney Scholarship • was initiated this year by their 7 children in honor of Mark’s 80th birthday. Mark is a 1949 graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and their 7 children are all Shanley graduates. The Father James Ermer Scholarship was es-• tablished by members of St. Anthony’s parish to honor Father Ermer and his commitment to Catholic Education and provide much needed scholarship funds for parishioners. The Elaine Barth VanDeVoorde Memorial • Scholarship is being initiated by Elaine’s fam-ily. Elaine was a 1980 graduate of Shanley. The Brother Michael Collins Memorial Schol-• arship was recently created by alumni to honor Brother for the impact he had on their lives.

In addition to these new scholarships, the follow-ing endowed scholarships were enhanced through additional donations: Don Bach, Alacoque Gibb, Dick Kasper, Jim Seminary, J. Michael Collins, Steve & Mary Lou Nistler, Cliff & Blanche Cos-sette, Fred Desautels and Hablas Family. All endowed scholarships are open endowments and can be enhanced by gifts from any donor. Dona-tions to endowed scholarships now can be made online through the Shanley alumni website at http://alumni.fdjp2.k12.nd.us/donations/.We are very grateful to the donors and families for these scholarships that provide critical funds for Catholic Education and honors a family mem-

ber, teacher or friend. How-ever, the need is also very great. The top impediment to enrollment is the availability of financial assistance. There are many ways that scholarships and financial assistance for families can be accomplished. First and fore-most, gifts to the JPII Fund provide tuition assistance to

families. Gifts to the JPII Fund can be made electronically or with the commit-ment form included in this edition of the Deacon. Scholarships can be funded annually by an indi-vidual, family or graduating class through single or monthly gifts. An endowed, named scholarship can be created with an initial gift and then added to until it reaches $10,000 and begins to fund a scholarship each year. Estate and planned gifts are especially effective for establishing scholarships and can be as simple as including the JPII Catholic Schools in your will. Insurance policies, IRAs and stock gifts are other good sources for establishing a scholarship. There are many families who desire the same opportunity for a Catholic Education provided to previous generations in our 130 year history. Perhaps you can make an eternal difference in the life of a student today and honor a family member, teacher or friend.
