You now have an exclusive DIRECTV®Universal Remote Control that will control four components,including a DIRECTV Receiver, TV, and two stereo or videocomponents (e.g 2nd TV, DVD, or stereo). Moreover, itssophisticated technology allows you to consolidate the clutterof your original remote controls into one easy-to-use unitthat's packed with features such as:

Four-position slide switch for easy component selectionCode library for popular video and stereo componentsCode search to help program control of older or discon-tinued componentsMemory protection to ensure you will not have to re-program the remote when the batteries are replaced

Before using your DIRECTV Universal Remote Control, youmay need to program it to operate with your particular com-ponent. Please follow the instructions detailed in this guide toset up your DIRECTV Universal Remote Control so you canstart enjoying its features.

INSTALLING BATTERIES

1. On the back of the remote control, push down on thedoor (as shown), slide the battery cover off, and removethe used batteries.

2. Obtain two (2) new AA alkaline batteries. Match their +and - marks to the + and - marks in the battery case,then insert them.

3. Slide the cover back on until battery door clicks intoplace.

CONTROLLING DIRECTV RECEIVERThe DIRECTV Universal Remote Control is designed to giveyou access to features and functions found on your originalremote control. To use it with your brand of DIRECTVReceiver, you will need to program the remote control by per-forming the following steps.

Programming DIRECTV Remote1. Locate the DIRECTV Receiver's brand and model num-

ber (on the back or bottom panel) and write it in thespaces below.

2. Locate the 5-digit code for your DIRECTV Receiver (seepage 10).

3. Power on the DIRECTV Receiver.4. Move the slide switch to DIRECTV icon.5. Press and hold in the MUTE and SELECT keys until the

green light under the DIRECTV icon flashes twice andthen release both keys.

6. Using the number keys enter the 5-digit code. If per-formed correctly the green light under the DIRECTV iconwill flash twice.

7. Aim the remote at your DIRECTV Receiver and pressthat the power key once. The DIRECTV Receiver shouldturn off. If it does not turn off, repeat steps 3 and 4, try-ing each code for your brand until you find the correctcode.

8. For future reference write down the working code foryour DIRECTV Receiver in the blocks below:

PROGRAMMING TO CONTROL YOUR TVNow that you have successfully programmed the newDIRECTV remote to operate your DIRECTV Receiver, youwill want to program this remote to control your TV.1. Turn the TV on.

NOTE: Please read steps 2-5 completely before proceeding.Highlight or write down the codes and component you wish toprogram before moving on to step 2.

2. Locate the 5-digit code for your TV (see pages 13-16).3. Move the slide switch to TV.4. Press and hold in the MUTE and SELECT keys at the same

time until the green light under the TV icon flashes twiceand then release both keys.

5. Using the number keys enter the 5-digit code for yourbrand of TV. If performed correctly the green lightunder TV will flash twice.

6. Aim the remote at your TV and press the power keyonce. The DIRECTV Receiver should turn off. If it doesnot turn off, repeat steps 3 and 4, trying each code foryour brand until you find the correct code.

7. For future reference write down the working code foryour TV in the blocks below:

PROGRAMMING THE TV INPUT KEYOnce you have programmed the DIRECTV remote control foryour TV, you may want to activate the TV Input button.1. Move the slide switch to the position under TV icon.2. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys until the green

light under the TV icon flashes twice and then releaseboth keys.

3. Using the number keys enter in 9-6-0 (The green lightunder the TV icon will flash twice)

You now have the ability to control the Input select feature foryour TV.

DEACTIVATE THE TV INPUT SELECT KEYIf you want to hide the TV INPUT button, follow steps 1through 3 from the previous section. Afterwards, the greenlight will blink 4 times. Pressing the TV INPUT key will now donothing.

PROGRAMMING OTHER COMPONENT CONTROLSThe AV1 and AV2 switch position can be used to program aVCR, DVD, STEREO, 2nd DIRECTV Receiver or 2nd TV withthe following instructions.1. Turn on the component (e.g. DVD Player) you wish to

program.2. Locate the 5-digit code for your component (see pages

13-22).3. Move the slide switch under the AV1 (or AV2) icon.4. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys at the same

time until the green light under AV1 (or AV2) flashestwice and then release both keys.

5. Using the number keys enter the 5-digit code for yourbrand of component being programmed. If performedcorrectly the green light under TV will flash twice.

6. Aim the remote at your component and press the powerkey once. The component should turn off. If it does notturn off, repeat steps 3 and 4 trying each code for yourbrand until you find the correct code.

7. Repeat steps 1 through 6 to program a new componentunder AV2 (or AV1).

8. For future reference write down the working code forthe component(s) programmed under AV1 and AV2 inthe blocks below:

SEARCHING FOR YOUR CODE IN AV1 OR AV2MODEIf you were unable to find the code for your brand of TV orcomponent, then you can try a code search. This process maytake up to 30 minutes.

1. Turn on the TV or component.2. Move the slide switch to the AV1, AV2 or TV position.3. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys at the same

time until the green light under the selected switch posi-tion flashes twice and then release both keys.

4. Enter in 9-9-1 followed by one of the following 4-digits:COMPONENT TYPE COMPONENT ID #Satellite 0TV 1VCR/DVD/PVR 2STEREO 3

6. Point the remote at the TV or component and pressCHAN . Repeatedly press the CHAN until the TV orcomponent turns off.Note: Every time CHAN is pressed the remote advances to thenext code and power is transmitted to the component

7. When the TV or component turns off, stop pressing theCHAN key. Then, press and release the SELECT key.NOTE: If the light flashes 3 times before the TV or componentresponds, then you've cycled through all codes and unfortunatelythe code you need is not available. You must use the remote thatcame with your TV or component.

VERIFYING THE CODESIf you have setup the DIRECTV Universal Remote Controlusing the SEARCHING FOR YOUR CODE PROCEDURE, youcan find out the 5-digit code your component responded towith the following instructions:1. Move the slide switch to appropriate position.2. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys at the same

time until the green light under the selected switchflashes twice and then release both keys.

3. Enter in 9-9-0 (The green light under the selectedswitch position will flash twice)

4. To view the first digit in the code, Press and release thenumber 1 key. Wait three seconds, and count the num-ber of times the green light flashes. Write this numberdown in the leftmost TV, AV1 or AV2 code box foundon pages 11 or 12. Note: If this part of the code is "0" the light will not flash

5. Repeat step 4 four more times for the remaining digits.Press number 2 for the second digit, 3 for the third digit,4 for the fourth digit and 5 for the final digit.

CHANGING VOLUME LOCKDepending on how you set up your remote, the VOL and MUTEmay control the volume only on your TV or other compo-nents, regardless of which position the switch is under. Thisremote can be programmed so that the VOL and MUTE keyswork ONLY with the component selected above the slideswitch. To select this feature, perform the following steps:

1. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys until the greenlight under the DIRECTV icon flashes twice and releaseboth keys.

2. Using the number keys, enter in 9-9-3 (the green lightwill flash twice after the 3).

3. Press and release the VOL key (the green light willflash 4 times).

Now the VOL and MUTE keys will work ONLY for the compo-nent selected by the slide switch position.

To Lock Volume to AV1, AV2 or TV1. Move the slide switch to the AV1, AV2 or TV position to

lock the volume.2. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys until the green

light under the selected switch flashes twice and releaseboth keys.

3. Using the number keys, enter 9-9-3 (the green light willflash twice).

4. Press and release the SELECT key (the green light willflash twice).

RESTORE FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGSTo reset all the functions of the remote control to the factorydefaults (the original, out of the box setting), follow thesesteps.

1. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys at the sametime until the green light flashes twice and then releaseboth keys

2. Using the number keys, enter in 9-8-1 (the green lightwill flash 4 times).

TROUBLESHOOTINGPROBLEM: Light at top of remote does not blink when you

press a key.SOLUTION: Try replacing the batteries (see page 8).PROBLEM: Light at the top of the remote blinks when you

press a key, but the home entertainment com-ponent does not respond.

SOLUTION: Make sure you are aiming the DIRECTV® Universal Remote Control at your home enter-tainment component and that you are within 15feet of the component you are trying to control.

PROBLEM: The DIRECTV Universal Remote Control doesnot control home entertainment component orcommands are not recognized properly.

SOLUTION: Try all listed codes for the device brand being set up. Make sure all home entertainment components can be operated with an infrared remote control.

PROBLEM: TV/VCR combo does not respond properly.SOLUTION: Use the VCR codes for your brand. Some

combo units may require both a TV code and a VCR code for full operation (see page 12).

PROBLEM: CHAN , CHAN , and PREV do not work foryour RCA TV.

SOLUTION: Due to RCA design (1983-1987), only the origi-nal remote control will operate these functions.

PROBLEM: Changing channels does not work properly.SOLUTION: If original remote control required pressing

ENTER to change channels, press ENTER on the DIRECTV Universal remote control after entering a channel number.

PROBLEM: Remote control does not turn on Sony or SharpTV/VCR Combo.

SOLUTION: For power on, these products require program-ming TV codes on the remote control. For Sony, use TV code 0000 and VCR code 0032. For Sharp, use TV code 0093 and VCR code 0048.
