On behalf of Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, I am delighted to present this comprehensive

brochure about our department.

The department is one of the oldest departments of IIT Madras, having born in the same year as the institute (1959) and

started functioning as Department of Metallurgy under the leadership of Prof. E.G. Ramachandran. In the first few

decades, the department was more identified as an industrial metallurgy department with its strength in casting, forming

and welding of metals and alloys. There has also been emphasis on process metallurgy of iron & steel. Over past two

decades, the focus on nonmetallic materials grew to the extent that the department was renamed as Department of

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering in 2003.

The department has 30 dynamic faculty members, at an average age of 45 years, with their teaching, research and

consultancy activities in various areas ranging from conventional metallurgy to frontiers of materials science. It has

about 160 research scholars (M.S & PhD) working in the above areas. The department offers B.Tech, M.Tech, M.S and

PhD (Direct and Regular PhD) degrees. A new M.Tech program on Industrial Metallurgy through e-learning mode has

been recently launched by the department for the benefit of personnel from industry and R&D labs.

The department is endowed with some of the best processing and characterisation facilities along with the most

comprehensive software for the materials design and modelling in its Integrated Computational Materials Engineering

(ICME) lab. The department has taken the responsibility of establishing aberration corrected Transmission Electron

Microscope (Titan) as a central facility of the institute, which can offer 0.1 nm resolution, the only IIT to have such a

facility. The department also has the state of the art Thermal-Mechanical simulator (Gleeble), a unique facility catering to

the needs of people working in forming, welding and particulate technologies of materials.

The department continues to strive for excellence and realising its vision of becoming a leading department in the

country for teaching, research and consultancy in the emerging areas of material science and engineering while

consolidating its strength in traditional areas of metallurgical engineering.

Testimonials

Abhik N. Choudhury (Professor, IISc, Bangalore)

The atmosphere of very bright students and all the encouraging professors has contributed in shaping my future. I will always remain indebted to my alma-mater for providing me with the fertile environment where I could develop both my academic and professional competence, making those five years an unforgettable part of my journey.

Christopher Berndt (Professor, Swinburne University of Tech. Australia)

The primary strength of the department lies in their core attribute of using excellent infrastructure to perform the mission of serving the academic community in undergraduate and postgraduate scholarship. The department is preparing engineers, scientists and scholars for the enduring demands and challenges of the 21st century.

Dheepa Srinivasan (Principal Engineer, GE, India Technology Centre, Bangalore)

The faculties are enthusiastic and energetic for discussion on a wide range of topics including both fundamental and industrial research. Looking forward to our continued collaboration, which has been in place since 2013.

Horst Hahn (Executive Director, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany)

It has excellent balance between modern materials science i.e. nanomaterials and established areas of high importance for Indian industry i.e. steels. It has been generating excellent students on all levels for Indian society/industry and with high competence for international careers.

Kamat S. V. (Director, DMRL, Hyderabad)

This is one of the few departments in the country that has found the right balance between traditional metallurgical engineering and the emerging areas of materials science and engineering. They have been a valuable partner for DMRL in several of our key projects and we expect the partnership to grow in the future.

Ravi Ravindran (Professor, Ryerson University, Canada)

The MME department stands out due to distinctly high quality students, distinguished faculty, state-of the-art research facilities and global outreach through personal rapport and collaborative partnerships. It enables innovative publications of high impact and professional friendships.

The strength of the department largely derives from the youth of its faculty and the diversity of its interests. Personally I would like a greater importance given to the technology of engineering metals.

Ramachandran E. G. (First Professor & HoD, MME, IIT Madras)

Pradip P (VP, Chief Scientist and Head, TCS Innovation Labs - TRDDC, Pune)

Sharma S. C.(Director, Materials & Metallurgy Group, VSSC, Trivandrum)

Under the Space Technology Cell of ISRO at IIT Madras, there is an intense collaboration on materials development related activities between Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering of IIT Madras and Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). Findings of research at the Dept. under the collaborative projects complement and supplement the R&D efforts at VSSC. Student Academic Activities

70

MetSA: Metallurgical & Materials Engineering Student Association (MetSA) is a student body which

handles the various departmental activities for the students of MME. The main aim of the MetSA team is

to promote a departmental connection within the students through different activities; some of them

include Industrial Visits, Fresher’s Night, Farewell, Informal Games etc. A major event which comes

under MetSA includes annual technical festival of the department Amalgam.

ETCH: ETCH is a departmental magazine which projects the departmental activities from faculties,

students and alumni. Etching is a process in metallurgy, which opens up the microstructure of

materials to us. Inspired from that, ETCH opens up to the students and alumni the fascinating research

that is going on in our department and around the globe. Comprising the interesting stories of alumni

and scientists, it inspires toddlers to take their first steps in research. It is also a career guide for current

students. The first issue of Etch was brought out in 2013 (July-Nov semester) and has been bringing

out an issue in the beginning of every semester.

AMALGAM: Amalgam, popularly called as “Material Festival” is an annual technical event organised by

Department of MME, IIT Madras. Amalgam consists of a variety of events, workshops, demonstrations

and lectures designed to give you a flavour of the happenings in the depar tment. The events include

Industry Defined Problem (IDP), paper and poster presentation, The Ultimate Metallurgist, Project X and

many more. In addition, an initiative “Jaagruthi” has been taken to create awareness among the school

children about the fascinating aspects of metallurgical and materials science.

International Symposium for Research Scholars (ISRS): The Department of Metallurgical and

Materials Engineering (MME), IIT Madras in association with IIM Chennai Chapter, has been organising

the biennial symposia, National Symposium for Research Scholars (NSRS), on Materials Science and

Engineering, since 1996, at the national level. This was later transformed into International Symposium

for Research Scholars (ISRS) since 2004. This year’s symposium, ISRS-2016, is the seventh in the

series of international symposia and will be held from 21-23 Dec 2016 at IIT Madras. ISRS is devoted

solely to research scholars (MS & PhD students) so that they can interact with their peers from all over

the world and exchange research ideas, which can help in improving their quality of research, analytical

and presentation skills.

In-House Symposium (IHS-2016): The first in-house symposium of the department was held from

January 27-28, 2016. The event was organised by an active team of students with active support from

faculty members. About 25 oral papers and about 30 posters were presented by the students of the

department in various sessions in IHS-2016, which were chaired by the faculty of the department. IHS

gives a platform to the students of the department to showcase their research work in front of their

colleagues and faculties and gain useful insights to progress ahead. A cultural night was also organised

which included performances from students and faculties. There is a plan to make this a regular event

of the department.

The FEI-Titan 80-300 Transmission electron microscope at IIT Madras is equipped with a field emission

electron gun (X-FEG) and a Cs image corrector which provides superior performance for atomic resolution

imaging.

It is equipped with a CCD camera (4k x 4k pixels) and a set of STEM detectors for bright field, annular dark field

(ADF) and high angle annular dark field (HAADF) STEM imaging. It is

equipped with ChemiSTEM Technology which consists of the FEI

proprietary X-FEG high brightness Schottky field emission source, the

patented Super-X 4-SDD, windowless EDX detector system and fast

mapping electronics capable of collecting 1,00,000 spectra/second

during EDX spectrum imaging.

This Super-X/ChemiSTEM combined with STEM enables EDS spectral mapping down to the atomic scale. The

microscope is optimised for a 0.11nm probe resolution and 0.07nm information limit to facilitate atomic

resolution. Until now IIT Madras is the only institute among IITs/IISc to have such an aberration corrected TEM.
