Creating mature and responsible citizens

Term 4 15 November 2013

This year has disappeared so fast and before you know it, Christmas will be here. Speaking of Christmas, that means there will be more people in town and the shops will be getting busier so it is definitely a perfect time for anyone looking for a job to approach employers. So, take advantage of this time of year.... and get out there and find a part time job. Don’t rely on the ads in the paper or the job agencies, show some initiative and go into the business that you would like to work in and ask them if they have any work available, if the answer is ‘no’, ask can you leave your resume in case something comes up. By doing this, you are showing the employer that you have initiative and you are keen in finding employment. If you don’t have a resume, go onto our website – dubbocol-legecareers.com.au and register, you then go into the sec-tion marked students and then click on the resume section and create your own. If you would like me to look at it, send me an email and I will give you some feedback and any suggestions that may help you. My email address is [email protected]

A number of students from our junior campus’ recently took part in work experience as a teachers aid. Some students were selected to return for a formal interview. Many of the students had never experienced a formal in-terview before and there were plenty of nerves on the day. They all did very well and I received positive feedback from the interview panel. Four students, three from South and one from Delroy campus, were successful in obtain-ing traineeships as Education Assistants. Congratulations to Stephen Mason (Delroy) Ashley Thomas, Shania Park and Destiny Griffiths (South). We wish you all the success for this traineeship. Well done, you will be great role mod-els to the young students in Dubbo.

Three year 10 boys took the opportunity to attend a couple of hours at Inland Truck Centre. This gave them a taste of what applying for an apprenticeship might look like when the time comes for them to actually do it. The boys were surprised at how much maths was involved in becoming a mechanic. It was a great experience for the boys and I am sure that they will now be working hard developing their maths skills further. I would like to thank

Michael Mackie from Inland Truck Centre for taking the time out of his busy day to spend with the boys, he showed them around the workshop, what skills are re-quired to become a diesel me-chanic and how maths is relevant

when working on the trucks

Community involvement is priceless and it gives our stu-dents an insight to what can be expected and what is be-ing taught at school is relevant in the workforce. Once again, thank you Michael and Inland Truck Centre.

Mrs J Grey CAREERS

CAREERS We welcome yearly examinations this week! Included in this edition is a Parent Survey about School Culture. I would ask that you take some time to complete it and return it to the front office. We are using this infor-mation as a part of the feedback for our Positive Behav-iour for Learning processes across the school. Your hon-est feedback will be much appreciated.

As can be seen on our front cover this week the Dubbo College Celebration of Sport was a great success. The evening was an opportunity to highlight the many excel-lent efforts from across the College on the sporting field. Our South Campus students faired very well in the awards in areas as diverse as horse riding, swimming, athletics, cricket and cycling. Well Done to all the award winners. Special thanks must go to Mr Tim Berry who was instru-mental in the organisation of the night.

The P&C fundraiser is now complete. Thank you to every-one who purchased items. Funds from this initiative are supporting the installation of a drink bottle refill station in the school. On this note I can advise you that the P&C has changed financial institutions. Our Community Partnership Account with Orana Mutual now allows you to nominate Dubbo College South Campus as your preferred organisa-tion. So if you have, or open an account with, Orana Mutu-al please nominate us. What a great way to support the school!

Our Junior debating team is preparing for the State Titles in a few weeks. The team of Jade Bunt, Milla Ross, Daniel Cook and Georgia Benton-Bryant will travel to Sydney University to compete. This is an excellent achievement and perhaps a first for the College. We wish them well.

It was also pleasing to read the excellent results in the ICAS English Competition. 13 students have achieved a credit or higher in this international test.

On the sporting field a very successful Interschool Compe-tition was held with Forest High and Wallsend Campus of Callaghan College from Newcastle. Thank you to Miss Ryan for her organisation of the event. Detailed results are included. Our girl’s cricket team has also recently played well against the strong Wellington HS side. I was pleased to hear this week that Chloe Ahern has been se-lected in the Western Side that will play in the State Championships.

Some key dates over the next few weeks include: The examination period commences on the 14th Novem-ber through to the 22nd November.

Our College Presentation evening is on the 28th Novem-ber at the Regional Theatre and the South Campus even-ing on the 9th December in the school hall.

Our next P&C meeting will be held on Monday 18th No-vember, due to the clash with Presentation evening, from 7.00pm at the South Dubbo Tavern. It is the Principal’s shout for our last meeting of the year. Please feel wel-come to join us.

Have a great week! Mr D Thompson

Term 4 15 November 2013

Our Year 7 - 9 cricket team played against Wellington HS in the Lisa Keightley Shield T20 Competition on November 12. Some skilled bowling by Chloe Ahern, Bianca Stewart and Macey Shipp combined with tight wicket-keeping by Georgia Benton-Bryant resulted in some great catches. We restricted their runs to 146 after 20 overs.

Chloe Ahern opened our batting innings with Jessica Ball and retired after scoring 44 quick runs. Bianca Stewart was not out 8 and Sharney Williams scored 7 in our total of 128.

Congratulations to the team for their efforts and

great sportsmanship. Thanks to Denis for driving the bus for us and Mr Matthew Ball for supporting the team during the day.

On Thursday the 31st October and Friday the 1st of No-vember, Students from Dubbo College South Campus, competed in the inaugural interschool sporting competi-tion for 2013.

Students and teachers from Wallsend Campus, Calla-ghan College in Newcastle and Forest High from Forestville on Sydney’s Northern beaches, travelled to Dubbo to compete in this event.

On Thursday the 31st, we arrived at the Athletics Track to compete in the 100m, 800m, Shot Put, Long Jump and Novelty Events. Dubbo College was a strong force all up, especially in the Year 8 Boys and Year 8 Girls.

After the Athletics, we then went and played Touch and Netball, where we had mixed results.

The last event of the day was the swimming carnival, and after this event Dubbo and Wallsend drew for the lead in the competition.

At the end of the day on Thursday all three schools came together to have free time at the pool and at the waterslide, where students had the opportunity to mix and mingle with students from the other schools. On Friday morning we played Volleyball and Soccer, which unfortunately are not our two strongest sports of the competition and thus resulted in us coming second overall to Wallsend, by only 50 points.

A big thank you goes out to the coaches and teachers who helped out with the smooth running of the event: Miss Blanco, Mr Berry, Mr Smith, Miss Brady, Mr Wood, Miss Imrie, Miss Hockey, Mr Patterson Also a big thank you to the students from south campus that assisted in refereeing and helping out with teams for the day: Daine Cox, Phil Combridge, Jo Crampton, Will Black, Eli-za Smidt-Geering, Luke Carman, Tiana Spears ,Corey Marsden, Jacob Parker, Harley Bye, Annalise Palmer, Tiarna Wakley, Skye Daley, Jade Scheibel, Matilda

Munn, Olivia Thompson, Mitch Wilson, Rebecca Galante, Bailey Delaney (senior), Jayden Quayle(senior). And finally, thank you to the students who competed in the event, you should all be extremely proud of your-selves for the excellent display of sportsmanship that was shown throughout the event!

Thank you to everyone. Miss S Ryan

Nearly 90 students participated in the ICAS competition this year.

This competition provides an opportunity for all students in Years 3 to 12 to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external testing situation. It provides teachers, parents and students with comprehensive reporting of results in the areas of English. The tests are an excellent preparation for national tests and the student report is useful for highlighting your child’s strengths and weaknesses.

Congratulations to Joshua Hicks in Year 7 who was awarded High distinction (top

1% of all entrants). Charlotte Hoynes in Year 10 was awarded Distinction (next 10% of entrants). The following students were awarded Credit (next 25% of entrants): Year 7 Brendan Gawthorne, Bailey Mountjoy; Year 8 Brooke Andrews, Richard Boon, Jordan Jalalaty, Sophie Mancer, Connah Matthews, Sam Neave; Year 10 Charlie Benton-Bryant, Shannon Finch and Elijah Stanger-Jones.

Congratulations to all students who participated.
