National Literacy and Numeracy Week I have included an interesting article that outlines the benefits of reading to and with children.

Reading Aloud to children. “Many argue that both children and adults miss something when there is no reading aloud: they lament the "fabulous illustrations" some children never see, as well as the "esoteric" vocabulary and "thrilling" adventures they may never experience. They say adults who don't read to their children forgo "a precious point of sustained connection" with their child and "a lot of goofy fun". Some experts say computers, televisions, tablets and phones have become fierce competitors to the bedtime story.” http://www.smh.com.au/national/education/reading-aloud-has-huge-benefits-to-children-but-many-parents-stop-too-early-20151123-gl5v85.html

A Challenge to families As part of National Literacy and Numeracy week can you attempt to read to your children every night for a week? Try reading from different printed formats, e.g. newspaper, magazine, book, brochure…… There are a lot of fantastic picture books around these days. Picture books are not only for little children. There are themes and concepts in picture books for all ages. Explore the end papers (the pages between the cover an dtitle page). Why are they there? How do they relate to the story? Explore the pictures in the book. Do they tell you more about the story? If you just look at the pictures, can you make up a new story? We have plenty of books here in the library waiting to be borrowed. Have fun reading. Sue Buttrey Teacher Librarian

Morph This Wednesday the Morph students will be working with the ‘Get Hooked’ fishing program which will fully begin in Term 4. If you require further information please contact Miss Kent.

We have been lucky enough to have Jamie and Donald come and help us start with our pallet tent projects. We are hoping to begin the projects this term ready to be used in Term 4. If you would like to be involved please let me know hop on Facebook and start sharing the Morph update so our fellow community members of Dubbo can get involved. Let’s keep Morphing.

Congratulations Alexander Price competed in the Western Multicultural Speaking Competition in Wagga on Monday the 28th of August. His speech was about refugees and he was awarded 3rd place! Unfortunately only first moves to the state competition but we are extremely happy with his result. He represented the Western region and competed against other students from the Riverina region. Alexander says it was really fun to compete and he met a lot of people from other schools.

P&C News Next P&C meeting is Wed 6th Sept 6.30pm in The Shed.

Canteen Roster Volunteers required—even for an hour or two! Please ring Jodie on 68822957 if you can help!

Wear Yellow for Cancer Day This year, like many Australians, Paige will be taking part in Relay for Life. Her goal is to raise as much money as possible to help combat this horrendous illness. To help Dubbo South Public School students are asked to wear yellow on Friday the 15th of September with a gold coin donation. Every little bit helps! If you would like to donate to the cause please go to https://www.relayforlife.org.au/get-involved/donate/

Let’s Make a Difference It’s that time of year again where we can make a huge difference to another child’s life. Operation Christmas Child involves packing a shoe box full of wonderful and useful surprises for a child in need. It is a wonderful project to do with your own children to teach the important lesson of thinking of others as well as appreciating and valuing the life we have. To fill a box with gifts consider these categories: something to love, something to wear, something for school, something for hygiene and something to play with. Ideas include: T-shirts, thongs, washers, soap, toothbrush, coloured pencils, lead pencils, note pads, exercise books, match box cars, balloons, stickers, hairbrush, comb, tennis balls, plastic cups, soft toy (something to love). If you can’t manage a whole box, maybe think about donating a few items to be combined with other donations. Mrs Prince is currently coordinating donations. Boxes are available from the top office or Mrs Prince.

The Szymkow family – Ruby, Jack, Grace and Max have

supported Operation Christmas Child for many years and

are happy to make a difference for children in need.

Kinder Kinder assembly will be held at 9.40am in the hall this Friday. Kinder will be having an encore performance of their Rabbit item.
