PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
ISSE
Thanks so much to Vicki Martin, Danielle Bonacci, Alison Willcox, Alexis Tsourlenes and the entire Mount Waverley Staff for ensuring our Japanese visitors had such a positive experience and will return to Japan with wonderful stories of their Australian experience. Thanks also to the families and students who hosted our Japanese visitors and made them feel so very welcome. They did an amazing job welcoming the delegation into their homes so warmly and generously hosting over the 3 week period. Well done and congratulations on a successful exchange. Staff have embraced this program and I congratulate them on the engaging learning tasks they have provided our Japanese students as part of our commitment to Global Education and Internationalising Education. It won’t be long before Vicki and her committee start planning for our 2019 program with Mexico which will be followed by the 2020 program with Cambodia. Exciting times ahead!

LIBRARY OPEN DAY
Last Saturday was our annual Library Open Day and the atmosphere was fantastic with a large number of our community visiting during the day. Thanks to Jacqueline Griffeth for organising such a wonderful day with people of all ages experiencing our great Library. Jacqueline had a large number of staff assisting her who all did a terrific job not just assisting but also engaging with our community. I brought my four year old daughter Ruby with me and she thoroughly enjoyed making her pirate treasure chest (with a lot of help from Year 6 teacher, Ing Lim). STAFFING
This week we interviewed for a Numeracy Leader to commence from the start of 2019. I am pleased to announce that Ramya Deepak Kumar will be joining us and Ramya comes to us with terrific credentials. In addition to her skills in leading numeracy, Ramya also has a background as a scientist. I know that the community will embrace Ramya as a new addition to our community and curriculum leader of our staff next year. Greg Paine Principal

LIBRARY NEWS
OPEN LIBRARY SATURDAY
What a wonderful day it was. We opened the library last Saturday and invited you to come and celebrate reading with your family and over 300 people came through the door! The weather was absolutely beautiful, which probably helped.
Throughout the day there was such a busy, happy atmosphere as Mums and Dads sprawled on cushions or snuggled up on couches to share books with their children, chatted with other families or got stuck in to the activities on offer, assisted by one of the seventeen teachers who rostered on to help out.
There were treasure maps and bookmarks being made, pirate cutlasses being fashioned from card and silver foil and carefully constructed treasure chests being assembled at various tables around the room. At 4 pm families were still arriving, and everybody helped to clean up at the end as we reluctantly closed the doors on another great Book Week!

Victorian State Schools Spectacular – Get your tickets!
Tickets open Thursday 19th July 9am at Ticketek.
We are proud and excited to have some of our students participating in the 2018 Victorian State Schools
Spectacular: With the Beat.
This year’s Spectacular will be held at Hisense Arena on Saturday 15 September, with two shows at 1pm and
6:30pm.
The journey of exploration will see Hisense Arena transformed into a mystical Venetian masquerade ball, a
wondrous Steam Punk Fairground in a cornucopia of new and old mixed together.
There is something for everyone’s musical taste in this year’s show, from Macklemore, Imagine Dragons,
Sheppard, Tim Minchin, Beyonce, to Karl Jenkins.
Talented young skaters, skate boarders, BMX riders, puppeteers, musicians, dancers and singers will feature
on stage, while many other students will work behind the scenes, gaining unique, on-the-job, professional
experience.
This is a creative vision of industry professionals including Creative Director Neill Gladwin, Musical Director
Chong Lim, Dance Director Deon Nuku, (Scooby Doo, Happy Feet, Moulin Rouge) and Associate Dance
Director Yvette Lee, (Dancing with the Stars, X-Factor Australia, Australia’s Got Talent and So You Think You
Can Dance).
This program – managed by the Department of Education and Training – helps to develop each student’s
performance skills, discipline, perseverance, cooperation and confidence under the training of industry
professionals.
For a fun, family entertainment experience, and to cheer on our students from the audience, be quick to
secure tickets.

MWPS WALKATHON
Dear Parents and Guardians, The annual Walkathon is used to raise money to purchase a range of literacy resources such as reading sets, big books for shared reading sessions and comprehension cards and games. To achieve this goal, we need the support of our school community. We are asking the students to be sponsored by family, friends and neighbours. Please donate by selecting an amount per lap, or by giving a donation. Any money received will be greatly appreciated. The Walkathon will take place on Wednesday 5 September from 11:30am to 1:00pm. The senior classes will walk around the school perimeter (Toirram Road, William Street and Park Lane). The junior classes will be walking around the basketball courts. The amount of laps your child completes will be recorded on the sponsorship form that has been sent home with your child. A copy of the sponsorship form can be found, downloaded and printed out from Compass if required.
We ask students to come dressed in sporting attire for the walkathon. We would also like to invite parents to bring a healthy lunch and join their children on the oval for a whole school picnic. Please note that ALL visitors to the school must sign in at the office upon arrival.
We look forward to your support of this fundraising event and ask you to assist your child in obtaining sponsorship for their efforts. Please return the completed sponsorship form by Tuesday 31 August (Do NOT send any money to school on this day). We will then return this form to you so that the money can be collected and paid via Qkr and for the sponsorship form to be returned to your class teacher by Friday 14 September. Qkr payments can be found under ‘School Excursions and Events’ under the ‘Donations’ tab. Many thanks for your support.
