LOOKING WAY AHEAD IN THE BRACKET Should the seeds hold on Duke’s side of the bracket, the Blue Devils will have another weekend of playing in the Triangle. A third round victory over Fordham will allow the Blue Devils the chance to either stay at home for the quarterfinals or make the short trip to Cary for a game against North Carolina. With two seemingly home games on the horizon, Duke could only have to travel 48 miles round trip to advance to the College Cup in Philadelphia.

2017 DUKE MEN’S SOCCER4
DUKE REACHES 13 WINS With a 12-4-2 overall record in regular season play, Duke reached the 12-win mark for the first time since 2011 and for the second time under head coach John Kerr. Duke, now 13-4-2 overall, is one win shy of matching the 14 the Blue Devils posted in 2011 – a season in which they had 12 in the regular season as well. The 12 regular-season victories are the most since the 2006 squad had 13 before starting its postseason run. The regular season record for wins is 16 held by the 1982 squad. Duke made a five-win improvement from 2016, the largest jump from one season to another since the six-game leap the Blue Devils made from 2003 (8) to 2004 (14).
DUKE IN THE POLLS Duke came in at No. 14 in the final regular season coaches poll. It was the highest ranking of a Blue Devil squad heading into the NCAA Tournament since 2006 when it was No. 1 after winning the ACC title. Duke, ranked for eight straight weeks to end the regular season, was among the top 25 for multiple consecutive weeks for the first time since it was in the top 25 for seven straight weeks during the 2010 season. The No. 11 ranking a couple weeks ago was the highest since November of 2009.
DUKE STAYED STEADY IN RPI Duke debuted at No. 12 in the first nationally released RPI rankings and gradually moved up in the rankings, ultimately to No. 3 in the final poll. Duke’s No. 3 RPI is the highest under head coach John Kerr and the best since the final No. 3 ranking in 2006. Wake Forest and North Carolina are Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, with seven of the top 10 teams hailing from the ACC. Duke finished 1-4-1 against teams from the top 11 in the RPI and 8-4-1 against the top 50.
HOME SWEET HOME The Blue Devils featured a busy home schedule in 2017, playing at Koskinen Stadium 14 times. Duke is 10-3-1 this season. The Blue Devils had just five road games overall and only one non-conference road contest. Under John Kerr, Duke is 76-26-15 at home for a .714 win percentage. The Blue Devils’ best season was 2009, going 12-1-0 at home.
KERR REACHES CENTURY MARK Head coach John Kerr captured his 100th win at Duke Sunday night with a 2-1 victory over FIU. In his 10th season, Kerr is only the second Duke coach in program history to reach the century mark. Kerr’s mentor and head coach, John Rennie, won 410 games in his 29 seasons at Duke and still ranks 22nd all-time across all three divisions with 454 wins overall. He is ninth among Division I coaches. Kerr’s current .577 win percentage is fourth among Duke coaches with Rennie leading the way at .706. Roy Skinner (1966-76; 71-45-5) is second at .607, while inaugural head coach K.C. Gerard (1935-48; 41-27-10) finished with a .589 win percentage.
DUKE VS RANKED TEAMS Duke played its ninth ranked team in FIU this past Sunday. Under John Kerr, Duke is 9-14-1 against ranked teams when unranked and 7-14-3 against top 25 teams when also ranked in the top 25. The Blue Devils own four top 25 wins this season, the most by a Kerr team after they won three in 2017, 2015 and 2008. Duke is 4-4-1 in 2017 and went 2-6-0 last year.

JACK DORAN THE SWISS ARMY KNIFE Sophomore Jack Doran is the Swiss Army knife of the Blue Devils. The Boston area native, after not seeing time as a rookie, has been successful for Duke on both midfield flanks and most recently as an outside back. Doran made his debut at left back at Notre Dame, helping shut out the Irish. This was his first foray into defense, providing more depth to the Duke lineup. He returned to the midfield for a couple games, but was solid on the backline to fill the void left by Markus Fjørtoft.
MCKENNA MAKES RETURN Junior Ciaran McKenna returned to the field at Notre Dame, playing in his first game since Sept. 5 after suffering a broken leg. He missed just over six weeks of action despite the serious injury. McKenna played 16 minutes overall against the Irish, 35 minutes against the Blue Hens and 25 versus Virginia. The Glasgow, Scotland native earned his first start of the year for Duke, getting the call to play up top.
MARATHON MEN Markus Fjørtoft, Brandon Williamson, Carter Manly, Brian White and Cody Brinkman are marathon men for the Blue Devils as the five field players who have played in at least 90 percent of the team’s 1665 minutes this season. Manley leads the way at 1746, while Fjørtoft has played 1657 after missing the previous game due to red card suspension. Williamson is at 1745 and White has been on the field all but 110 minutes and Brinkman for all but 132.
THE FIVE FEARLESS LEADERS The Blue Devils are led by the five captains in Kevon Black, Cody Brinkman, Markus Fjørtoft, Carter Manley and Brian White. Black also served as a captain in 2016. All five are crucial players for the Blue Devils, starting virtually every game.
DUKE’S INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR The Blue Devils’ roster has an international flavor with nine different countries represented, including the United States. Duke brought in freshmen from Austria, Iceland and Italy this season and has returning players from Argentina, Norway, Peru, Canada, Austria, and Scotland.
Argentina Nicolas Macri (Buenos Aires, Argentina)Austria Max Moser (Brengenz, Austria) Matthias Frick (Feldkirch, Austria)Canada Kevon Black (Brampton, Ontario) Oliver Spring (Toronto, Ontario)Iceland Kristófer Garðarsson (Akranes, Iceland)Italy Daniele Proch (Riva Del Garda, Italy)Norway Torbjørn Alseth (Trondheim, Norway) Markus Fjørtoft (Asker, Norway)Peru Miguel Yzaga (Lima, Peru)Scotland Ciaran McKenna (Glasgow, Scotland)
WHITE’S SPECTACULAR SUMMER Senior forward Brian White had a spectacular summer with the New York Red Bulls U23 squad. The New Jersey native led the PDL in goals, netting 17 in 14 games to earn the PDL Player of the Year award. He tallied four in one game en route to helping the Red Bulls capture the Mid Atlantic Division Title and PDL regular season crown. His success also landed him on top of the PDL Top Prospects List.
SUMMER SUCCESS It was a busy summer as Blue Devils suited up for PDL or NPSL teams. In addition to White, many players found success with their hometown clubs. Markus Fjørtoft joined White on the New York Red Bulls, serving as captain of the club that won the PDL regular season title. Cody Brinkman had a strong summer playing with the North Carolina FC, while also interning locally. Brinkman was voted to the PDL Team of the Week following his two-goal outing against Max Moser’s Tobacco Road FC club. Junior Ciaran McKenna saw quality minutes with the Jacksonville Armada U23s, while Jack Doran netted four goals and an assist for FC Boston. Carter Manley and Brandon Williamson both honed their skills with DC United, which goes up against teams from both leagues.
INTRODUCING THE NEWCOMERS Kerr welcomed the addition of nine newcomers to the program this fall, including seven freshmen and two transfer student-athletes. The group consists of a trio of goalkeepers, a host of quality defenders and multiple midfielders and strikers to bolster the Blue Devil lineup. Graduate student Erik Hanson and sophomore Daniele Proch arrive as transfers. Hanson was a two-year starter in his four seasons at Brown. Proch comes from Catawba College where he led the team in scoring with 23 points. Matthias Frick and Kristófer Garðarsson are the two new international players, hailing from Austria and Iceland, respectively. Both excelled for their local clubs and are expected to have an immediate impact for the Blue Devils. Daniel Wright is the top rated rookie, coming in at No. 20 in the IMG Academy rankings. Playing for the Crew Soccer Academy Wolves, Wright had 21 goals in 24 games this past season to rank 10th among all academy players. Wilhelm Jacques played his club soccer for FC Boston Bolts. He started all 18 games at defense to help the Bolts secure a playoff spot. Stephen O’Connell will provide depth to the lineup after leading Black Rock FC to the New England Premiership Connecticut State title. Michael Reis will be a key addition to the goalkeeping corps. He played for FC Golden State Academy and started all 21 games in goal and posted six shutouts. Will Pulisic rounds out the group after his year of playing in Germany.
ALL IN THE FAMILIES Soccer success certainly runs through the Pulisic name. Will’s cousin, Christian Pulisic is a standout for the United States National Team and for Borussia Dortmund. Christian, only 19 years old, has played his way into the starting XI for the U.S. Will experienced success with Dortmund’s U19s before enrolling at Duke this summer. Suniel Veerakone must share a little bit of the limelight with his sister Rubina, who is a senior on the Michigan women’s soccer team. Rubina started 10 of the 18 games this season for the 6-6-6 Wolverines.
UP NEXT A Duke win will send the Blue Devils to the NCAA quarterfinals where they will play the winner between North Carolina and SMU. The game will kick off Dec. 1 or Dec. 2 at a time and place to be determined. The highest remaining seed hosts.
