  • A special congratulations goes out to the Gr. 7 Boys Volleyball Team. It was an

exceptional season for this team who brought together a group of boys who had

the boys were unable to advance but were awarded the Conference Finalists

banner. Ms. O would like to thank the efforts of this team, who even came in to

practice on P.A. Days. Way to go boys! We'll see you next year!

  • Survival

Campfire making Campfire making was very fun since we both had never made a campfire before. It was interesting to learn about how a campfire is made and how many other materials, besides wood, you need in order to build it. By learning how to make a fire we now know that you need tinder, kindling, and fire wood. We also learned that tinder includes small twigs, dry leaves, needles or forest duff. In the end, we think this activity was our favourite in survival.

Survival Shelter When we were building the survival shelter, it taught us a few things about building a good shelter. For example, depending on the weather, different shelters are needed because if you had summer shelter when it was cold out, you would be freezing throughout the night. Another thing we learned is that, there are many things that could knock down your shelters with a simple blow, so in order to make sure your shelter doesn’t get broken down, all you need to do is make sure it’s stable and make sure it can survive the weather by putting large rocks to keep it from blowing away.

Predator and Prey The game predator and prey reminded us of the game tag but the predators also had to avoid getting caught by the diseases and natural disasters. I think the prey had a harder time not getting caught because they had the most people hunting for them. As for the predators, they also had to avoid the construction workers and so did the prey. I think the diseases, natural disasters, and the construction workers had the easiest jobs because they didn’t have anybody chasing after them and all they had to do was catch the predators and pray. In conclusion, I think this was an okay game, although I would have rather played tag.

  • My trip to island school

    What I learned:

I learned how to build a fire and how to make a tarp shelter. It was super fun and super easy to learn. I loved it!!!!

    My favorite activity:

My favorite activity was “Predator and Prey”. It was my favorite activity because there was a lot of running and going around different obstacles. There were three types of players. The prey (Mouse), the predator (owl) and natural disaster. The mouse can be tagged by anything, the owl can only be tagged by the natural disaster and the natural disaster can’t be tagged but can tagged. The natural disaster can tag the owl. But the owl can’t tag the natural disaster. The natural disaster can tag anything.

    My struggles:

My struggles were going to sleep at night, waking up in the morning at 7:30AM, the meal portions and the bad weather.

  • THANK-YOU DUKE!

Our Red Nose campaign in the final two weeks before the winter break was a huge

success. We wanted to share this email of appreciation so that you know your efforts

are making in impact far beyond the walls of the school!

    From: Rosenberg, Elaine (TDSB)

    Date: Wed, 30 Jan 2019 at 08:51

Subject: Red Nose Campaign - Thank You

    To: Dupont, Lise, Quildon, Jennifer

    Hi Lise and Jennifer,

A quick note to let you know we received your online donation for the Red Nose

Campaign. Thank you so much for all your support in organizing and running the

event this year. Your generous contribution of $1,000 is so much for us, and will help

    in many ways.

All funds raised will be used to help students by providing warm coats, mittens,

nutritious meals and other essential items that some families cannot afford.

Once again, thank you so much for all your help during this time of year.

  • Note to Parents Re: School Grounds & Winter Weather Information:

Our Canadian winter is definitely upon us!

It was an “all hands on deck” kind of night and morning on Tuesday. All of our TDSB

contractors and grounds staff and equipment were dispatched to clear the 27+ cm of

snow that fell. Under regular winter conditions, here is our ongoing practice:

Caretaking staff clear snow and salt as required daily and it is a priority in all shifts.

Sidewalk at the front entrance of the school along Woodfield Rd. is cleared.

Pathways from Woodfield Rd to main entrance Door 7, Door 6 (Childcare), continuing

to the west side or the building to student access doors are cleared and salted.

Pathway that leads south from Kerr St. to the north entrance of the schoolyard is

    cleared and salted, as needed.

Parking lots are contracted out by TDSB and are cleared and salted in accordance to

    this contract.

Schools with permits on weekends, such as our own, clear snow and salt as required

on each shift (sand is added according to conditions), otherwise snow is cleared at

the beginning of the shift on Monday mornings.

Should you encounter a pathway or Door entrance that is not easy to navigate or

access, please contact our main office: 416-393-9455

    Cold weather alerts and reminders:

    · During periods of extreme cold temperatures, we follow the TDSB’s operational procedure

for severe weather. When the temperature and/or windchill factor reach –28C or

lower, there is no discretion for school staff, and children remain indoors during the day

due to risk of frostnip and frostbite. When temperatures and/or windchill factor are –20

to –28C, or other inclement weather conditions warrant it, recesses may be shortened

or cancelled depending on local conditions. While do our best to get outdoors for

fresh air every day, that is not always possible. Of course, daily physical activity is

always an important part of each and every day at school, so on those days where

we cannot get outdoors during the day, our staff strive to provide students with

alternative opportunities for activity during recess so that we can keep our bodies and

    minds active and alert.

    With warm regards,

    Carol, Kelli & Carl
