From Our President… At our board meeting, Sandi Scrugham suggested that we revisit club music that had been
played but is not currently on the KADC web pages. We hope to use this suggestion and grow
the choices and styles available on the club music resources page. One piece that she suggest-
ed was Suo Gan, a part of the February intermediate class. This piece reminded me of an event
and a KADC member who gave so much to our club in many ways. In March of 2012, 32 of our
players presented a two hour concert of Celtic music for St. Patrick’s Day at
Maryville College. Anne-Marie Begley had the leadership role in this concert
with assistance from Terri Jolly and Evelyn Coomer. Anne-Marie was a multi-
talented person who shared her enthusiasm and knowledge with KADC and
many other area musical groups and organizations. The number of instru-
ments that she owned and played was only exceeded by the variety of ani-
mals that she cared for on her Heiskell farm. Among her many contributions
to area music was her service as the Music Director of the Joy of Music school
which is across the street from where our club meetings are held. Our club benefitted greatly
from Anne-Marie’s teaching and contributions to the club, and her name is on several of the
arrangements that are in our club music today. We lost Anne-Marie much too soon to cancer
in 2012. Dulcimers were played by her bedside until her death, and dulcimer music was played
at her memorial service. We fondly remember and appreciate all she did for KADC and the
Knoxville area musical world. We hope to resurrect additional tunes from that Celtic concert.
Danny Boy is scheduled for the March intermediate class along with When Irish Eyes Are Smil-
ing. Our participation in the Irish festival is a great venue for our Celtic music to be played.
If any member has favorite tunes from our club music or other sources that are public domain
music (1922 or before), or that has written permission for KADC use from the copyright owner,
let us know and we will work on getting them added to the club music on the web page.
A gentle reminder to all members- Please be sure that you have submitted your club member-
ship form and dues for 2018 no later than the March club meeting. This, according to our by-
laws, is the deadline for continued receipt of the newsletter, access to the members’ only sec-
tion of the web site, and the only way you maintain member-in-good-standing status that al-
lows you to legally play music with permission for KADC use only designation. We hope that
these three things that you get exclusively with your annual membership is important to you.
We have already had a good number of renewals and good attendance and participation in our
meetings and activities. Thank you for your participation and support of your club. Your full
participation encourages the efforts of those who prepare for the classes and activities that are
available to you. Additional volunteers for teaching and leading activities are always welcome.
As always, if you have any suggestions, ideas, or opinions regarding your KADC, please send me
an email. Communications, sharing, and support of your club and fellow members is vital as we
work to give, get, and grow in our club. Les

Dulcimer Daze Volume 28, Number 3
He wasn’t always a dulcimer player. As a matter of fact,
Rudy Ryan had never even seen a dulcimer until 1996, dur-
ing a family reunion. The hosts were dulcimer players, and
put on a duet performance for the gathering. Although
curious, he didn’t pursue the interest at the time. The fol-
lowing year, he was able to lay hands on the instrument
and take a private lesson. During the lesson, sparks flew
and music flowed.
He was captivated.
He came home, bought a Frank Bruin kit dulcimer in Norris,
and got right to it. He attended workshops, got lessons via
Skype (he highly recommends KY Music Week, Bing Futch,
Steve Seifert, Larry Conger, and Butch Ross!), and he prac-
ticed.
And practiced. And practiced some more.
Until in 2003, when he started teaching a beginner lap dul-
cimer class at Pellissippi State Community College. The
response was so enthusiastic, he felt compelled to add a
novice class to help his students progress. Yet they still
clamored for more, and the intermediate class was intro-
duced. However, after introducing the intermediate class,
he found a kink. There was just enough of a gap in the
skills between novice and intermediate that the students
struggled to make the leap. To ease that transition, Mr.
Ryan split the class into Part 1 and Part 2. Not long after,
he also added a Music of the Civil War class, playing some
of his preferred genres of hymns and waltzes.
While he had a very successful career as an electrical engi-
neer, he has found that playing and teaching dulcimer to
be far more personally rewarding and fulfilling, in equal
measure. He gets just as much from interacting with his
students as he does from personal playing. For him, the
old adage is true – “Do what you love, and you’ll never
work a day in your life”. And he’s loving every minute of it.

This song was part of the same shows and movies as Yankee Doodle Boy and was also written in 1904 by George M. Cohan. You may see the movie clip with James Cagney at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpVq9-oID-g This version includes the verse as well as the familiar refrain: https://youtu.be/rD9rQrbU-HM
ABOUT THE MUSIC…...Suo Gan
SuoGan is a traditional Welsh lullaby written by an anonymous composer with the first version in print around 1800.
The original lyrics were by the Welsh folklorist, Robert Bryan. The English translation gives us the words to a lullaby
which many consider to be a lullaby for the baby Jesus. The song’s title means lullaby (suo=lull, gan=song).
Many arrangements and recordings have been made using this Welsh tune. The tune is used with an Easter text by
John Bell & Graham Maule (1988) in the Presbyterian hymnal (#231) as “Christ Has Risen While Earth Slumbers”.
It appears in a Catholic hymnal (#408) with an Advent text by Mary Louise Bringle as “Now the Heavens Start to Whis-
per”. Bringle also wrote a text for Lent (#479), also in the Catholic hymnal, using the Suo Gan tune titled “As the Win-
ter Days Grow Longer”. These both were part of her 2006 hymn collection.
Probably the most famous use of the Suo Gan tune was in the 1987 Warner Brothers film “Empire of the Sun” directed
by Steven Spielberg. The film score for this movie was done by John Williams, and the soundtrack recording on Warner
Brothers Records has Suo Gan as the first track. The album was nominated for Academy Award, Golden Globe and
Grammy for Best Score.
