Duncan Boak Chair and founder Duncan lost his sense of smell as the result of a head injury in 2005. It wasn’t until late 2011, however, that he had the idea to set up Fifth Sense after being put in contact with Mr Carl Philpott and learning that his condition was not as rare as he had previously thought. Duncan has drawn on his experiences of working in education, with businesses and in the music industry in establishing Fifth Sense the charity for people affected by smell and taste disorders. Matt Jones Honorary Treasurer Matt has a background as an accountant and Finance Director. He has donated consultancy time and skills to charities in the past, including working on a project with the housing and homeless charity Shelter. He became interested in being involved with Fifth Sense after meeting members of the team at a public engagement event in 2016. Through the meetings that followed he was struck by the value that Fifth Sense brings to its members and to society and astonished to learn there was no charity for smell and taste disorders before Fifth Sense was created. Maggie Rosen Director of Marketing and Communications Maggie Rosen is a journalist, editor and author who writes mainly about the wine industry. Born and bred in New York City, she moved to London in the late 1990s to work in banking and eventually changed direction. She met Duncan at a perfume workshop in 2013 and realised that while sight loss and hearing loss attract a great deal of research, funding and empathy, disorders that affect the senses of smell and taste are misunderstood, ignored and Prof Carl Philpott Director of Research and Medical Affairs Prof Philpott is a Consultant ENT Surgeon and Director of the UK’s first NHS clinic to specialise in smell and taste disorders which he established in 2010. His research roles include being ENT Lead for the Eastern Clinical Research Network, Champion of Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) in research and Chair of the British Rhinological Society Research Group where he has helped to shape the national research priorities for nose and sinus diseases. Ian Maude Director of Business Development Ian is the Business Development Manager for the Faculty of Business and Law at Leeds Beckett University, where he has worked for over 12 years. During his time at the University he has worked extensively with many organisations to provide training for business. Ian works closely with organisations to provide a broad range of Continuous Professional Development. It was while working at the University that Ian met Duncan and they forged a great working relationship. Through this Ian saw what Fifth Sense wanted to achieve and offered to help the organisation by joining the Board of Trustees in
