About the City ofDundee
When choosing somewhere to work and live, quality of life is key. Dundee is one of the few
locations in the UK which combines the best of both worlds city facilities on a friendly
community scale and easy access to some of the most stunning countryside in Scotland.
Set on the spectacular Tay Estuary, Dundee is a city in a landscape of wild beaches, rolling golf
courses, quaint coastal villages and beyond them Scotlands famous mountains and glens
providing a range of lifestyle choices and house prices unbeaten by other Scottish cities.
The salaries of employees in Dundee currently go further on the property ladder than almost any
other city in the UK. Where the average UK house price is six times the average salary, in
Dundee the ratio is just under four times salary. The range of properties within commuting
distance to the University covers the widest spectrum from rambling country houses and
seaside cottages to handsome town villas and sleek city quay apartments. Dundee has put
enormous effort into the redevelopment of the city centre and its stunning waterfront along the Tay
is nowbeing developed. Excellent shopping sits side-by-side with a vibrant cultural quarter hometo Scotlands award-winning Dundee Rep Theatre and the highly acclaimed Dundee Contemporary
Arts which has become a lively social hub and film house aswell as a champion of leading edge arts.
These are among the closest neighbours to our city centre campus. In addition, Dundee is to become
the home of the V&A at Dundee, a new development which will be housed in an award-winning,
iconicbuilding designed by Kengo Kuma.
Dundee is a post-industrial city which has worked hard to reinvent itself and today the
University is a key economic driver for prosperity, particularly in the life sciences and medicine. The
University is involved in a range of partnership initiatives including a strong access programme and
social, education, cultural, business and voluntary partnerships aimed at raising confidence, skills
and achievement. The University has excellent working relationships with the City Council, other
local authorities, Scottish Enterprise Tayside (the local economic development company), NHSTayside and a range of other local and national bodies in Scotland and the UK.
Dundee has become known as the City of Discovery the place where Captain Scott of the
Antarctics ship, the RRS Discovery was built and is now permanently berthed. It is a line which
serves contemporary Dundee well with its reputation as a strong research led environment. The
University is one of the three biggest employers and the ratio of students and university
personnel to general population is among the highest in Scotland.
The highest levels of annual sunshine, more green spaces and the purest air quality ofany city in
Scotland make Dundee a pleasant place to live and comparatively low levels of traffic cut the daily
hassle factor considerably. An apocryphal tale has it that the local radio station has on occasion
warned of traffic jams causing delays of up to three minutes. Dundee is also renowned as a
friendly city where it is easy to mix and if your passion lies with the green, Dundee is one of the
best places in the world foraccess to quality and affordable golf. 18 championship golf courses lie
within 30 minutes and include St Andrews, Carnoustie and Gleneagles. Within similar reach lie
spectacular opportunities for everything from watersports to mountaineering and hillwalking.
There are 41primary schools in the region feeding into ten secondary schools. In the private sector,
Dundee High School is one of the leading fee paying schools in Scotland, consistently scoring well on
academic and sporting achievement. A further eight independent/private schools are within driving
distance including St Leonards, Strathallan, Glenalmond College and Lathallan School. Preschool
education is widely provided including a number of excellent private nurseries. Dundee is just a 90
minute drive from 90 per cent of Scotlands population. Edinburgh is less than an hour away and
Glasgow around an hour and a half by road orrail. IfLondon beckons, you can get down for a meeting
and back on the same day using Dundee Airport, flying direct to London City. Short check-in times are
an extra bonus and crystallise the quality of life enjoyed in this part of the world.

This group has led major archival investigations into three specific areas: early video art in the UK
and Italy (REWIND); expanded cinema; and the Richard Demarco photographic collection. Theseprojects have established web-based archives and collections that stimulate curatorial activity by the
research group, and curators in the contemporary gallery and museum sector from Glasgow,
Edinburgh, Rome, London, Milan and Singapore. Window to the West and Ossian Hall,
Stereoscopy, Natural Magic, investigated visual aspects within Gaelic culture, and Poetry Beyond
Text explored relationships between the word and image. The Centre for Artists Books established
by Alec Finlay, is a key collection for study and curation of artists publishing. DJCAD Exhibitions
is also a component of the group with four galleries (Centrespace, Cooper, Matthew and Foyer) and
a lively annual programme that attracts external funding from Creative Scotland, British Council,
and Henry Moore Foundation.
Artist researchers foster innovation within creative practice, employ creative practice as a
methodology to enhance other disciplines and domains, and contribute towards explicit and
transparent knowledge bases that further our discipline. Individual creative practice plays a majorrole in our research culture, alongside collaborative and interdisciplinary research. A
multidisciplinary approach extends far beyond traditional strengths in art, in interdisciplinary
projects in the arts, humanities, social sciences, physical and life sciences and technology. Foci
include cultural identity and values, constructed photography, museum culture, envisioning the oral
ephemeral, visual publishing, perception, performance, ecology, physical and digital place-based
practice and technologies.
Partners are located across the world and the UK and in our local region and include arts agencies,
museums and galleries, UK Research Councils, NHS, European Union, Foreign & Commonwealth
Office, local/regional/national and multinational companies, and charities.
This research group has been successful in attracting substantive (over 1.5m) and continuous
funding for over eight years from the AHRC, Creative Scotland, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal
Society of Edinburgh, Henry Moore Foundation and Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland.

Craft in a Digital World:Diverse practices and inquiries that centre on the issue of Craft in aDigital World contribute directly to our theme of Design Innovation. We aim to explore and definenew domains of maker-led innovation that connects craftmakers based in traditional processes andmaterials with the opportunities offered by digital manufacture, smart materials and communicationstechnologies. Current research in these areas conducted within DJCAD is providing evidence of anew value for craft in terms of developing new digital making tools, enhancing the quality of the
digital worlds we live in and contributing to innovation in product development, healthcare andother services.
Design for Servicesrepresents an integrated cross-disciplinary cluster of expertise that isinternationally distinctive and innovative in scope. Embracing service design, design ethnography, strategic innovation and design management, we believe in breaking down boundaries betweenteaching, research and consultancy, between students, faculty and those 'outside the academy',between thinking and doing. Our mission is to create a vibrant space where all with a stake in thefuture of design for services can gather, act and reflect, consolidate knowledge and share. We arelooking for an adventurous, open-minded, critically aware thinker with an enthusiasm forunderstanding the possibilities of the design for services in transforming public, private and thirdsector organisations and their offerings.
I nnovation using design as strategyuses a different set of design skills, those traditionallyundervalued by the discipline. Innovation methods are constantly evolving both inside and external
to the academy, with unfavourable economic conditions innovation is rising on the agenda ofindustry. It is now viewed as a way to develop a companys products to give them an edge within ahighly competitive market. Universities are now seen as a catalyst occupying the interface betweenresearch knowledge and economic growth. We are seeking an individual who has a soundknowledge of design and its application in a variety of forms where it can act as a transdisciplinaryfacilitator building conceptual models that are both generic and discipline specific to harness theenergy of academic research and ensure that it is applied in external contexts with the aim ofdelivering economic growth and sustained company development.

The Product Research Studio at the University of Dundee explores the impact of digital technologymade physical. We are excited about the current trend towards low-cost open-source hardware thatcan connect anything to the web and we want to know how this can benefit society. Taking on someof the worlds most pressing problems, from democracy, news and journalism, to inclusive societyto exploring data from space, we learn through prototyping, and making. We are currently workingwith Mozilla, Microsoft, NASA, NCR, EMI, and BBC R&D to understand and demonstrate a futureof a web that looks beyond the screen and into the way we live our lives.

The SerenA project - Chance Encounters in the Space of Ideas (RCUK) combines multidisciplinaryresearch with the role of serendipity in creative practice and design technologies to supportconnections between people and ideas. It investigates how mobile technology, data visualisation andaffective interface design can support people to identify things that they did not know they needed toknow and within this the ways in which the design of affective interfaces can influence perception, communication and interaction. SerenA is being designed and implemented as a physical presencein the British Library and the working environment, and via smartphones. This work has resulted inpublications and exhibitions nationally and internationally, and across art forms including Live Art,Digital Art, Interface Design, Interaction, Sound and Site Specific Installation.

Ekaterina KomendantskayaArgumentation Technology covers a broad range of computationally oriented research coveringtechniques in philosophical logic, artificial intelligence, jurisprudential theory, distributedcomputing, economics, rhetoric, cognitive and social psychology, marketing and linguistics whichfocus on understanding, representing, modelling and evaluating processes of reasoning, argumentand persuasion. The Argumentation Research Group is looking to further strengthen its researchprofile which currently balances excellent publications with practical high impact applications withpartners such as the BBC.
In addition to computational work in argumentation, the research group collaborates with twofurther research themes in which applications are also invited:
Constraint Programming covers a wide range of AI research from the intensely theoretical to thevery applied. One focus is on interdisciplinary research which applies constraint programming toother scientific disciplines, and a particular interest is on how constraint programming can be used tosolve problems in computational group theory. Recent work has also looked at how constraintprogramming can be used to create the levels in computer games and educational software.
Computational Logic focuses on programming language semantics and theorem proving. Interactive
theorem provers provide a rich programming environment for formal verification in mathematics(such a verifying proofs of the Four-Colour theorem) and industry (such as verifying the correctnessof Intel processors and mobile phone operating systems). Informatics for Social Inclusion encompasses diverse themes in Computing, all of which areunited by the common thread that being human provides everyone with a special bonda bond thattechnology can facilitate. We take social inclusion seriously, emphasizing that technology designshould consider not just those who are early adopters of technology, but also those who through ageor disability may have difficulty using technology. In addition, we consider the important role thattechnology can play in enabling enhanced quality of life through the use of technology supports.Working within the tradition of Human-Centred Computing, general research approaches include: Multimedia and multi-modal interfaces in which combinations of speech, text, graphics, gesture, movement, touch, sound, etc. are used by people to communicate with one another. Intelligent interfaces and user modelling and adaptation of content to accommodate differentdisplay capabilities, modalities, and bandwidth. Systems that control and coordinate actions and solve complex problems in a wide variety ofdomains, such as education, healthcare and successful aging. Speech language processing systems that support communication for people with physical, speech and cognitive impairments. Technical solutions to address the needs of individuals who are at risk of social exclusion due tocircumstances such as age, impairment, or health conditions.

A significant area of current research is multiscale mathematical modelling of cancer growth andtreatment through the development of a variety of original mathematical models for all the mainphases of solid tumour growthavascular, tumour-induced angiogenesis, vascular, invasion, andmetastasis. Recently Professor Chaplain has developed novel multiscale models of chemotherapyand radiotherapy treatment of cancer and spatio-temporal models of intracellular signallingpathways. In collaboration with cancer specialists in the College of Life Sciences and the Collegeof Medicine, his research develops highly original and novel mathematical models which are
beginning to impact on clinical decision making for optimising individual patient treatment. He hasalso contributed to the numerical analysis of systems of mixed hyperbolic-parabolic equations, helping to develop new, efficient techniques for their solution.
The University has a long-standing history of research excellence in the area of MathematicalBiology going back to Professor Sir D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson, which it seeks to developfurther through these appointments. The successful candidates will take their places in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment following substantial University investment in this area, which hasrecently seen the addition of a new chair in Systems Biology and five lecturers in MathematicalBiology. There is also an expected commitment to interact with colleagues in the Colleges of LifeSciences and Medicine (Ninewells Hospital) and the James Hutton Institute, and developinterdisciplinary collaborative research projects in the areas of computational biology, biophysicsand bioengineering. The successful candidates should therefore have a PhD in AppliedMathematics/Computational Mathematics/Numerical Analysis/Physics/Engineering (or cognate
discipline), and have either an outstanding research record in these areas, or display a clearpotential to work at the highest level within the field. They must also demonstrate enthusiasm forgenuinely inter-disciplinary research.Websites:
Through a long-standing collaboration with the James Hutton Institute (JHI), the GeotechnicalEngineering Research Group is actively researching the potential uses of biological systems (suchas plant roots and microbes) geotechnical engineering design. A particular focus is paid on thepotential benefits of plant roots to slope stability and erosion protection, and the ability tonumerically model root-soil interaction for design use. Within the University, the group has accessto a 3.5m beam centrifuge with controlled-environment capability, supporting laboratory soilelement testing equipment and numerical modelling software/expertise. Glasshouse facilities, advanced microscopy and biological laboratories can be accessed at JHI.
Bioengineering is a strong multidisciplinary group, which has strong cross-College andinternational collaborations. By exploring the properties of single-crystals and light, tissue, andtheir interactions, we developed state of art facilities and research in high power, high intensityultrasound for diagnosis and surgery, multi-modality imaging guided robotic assisted high intensityultrasound for cancer treatment, surface-wave sensing of elastic properties of tissue, full-rangecomplex Fourier domain optical coherence tomography, phase-sensitive optical coherencevibrometry, Photothermal OCT and their applications in imaging tissue morphology, blood flow, and regeneration medicine.

Photonics is one of the key research strengths at CASE, encompassing a range of themes whichinclude ultrafast photonics, optical manipulation, biophotonics and non-linear optics). Acrossthese themes, cutting-edge research activities include, for example, the development of a newgeneration of miniature and versatile semiconductor ultrafast lasers, optical trapping of aerosolsand novel modalities of optical microscopy for biomedical applications. The Photonics researchgroups have also established extremely fruitful collaborations with other disciplines wherePhotonics acts as a catalyst for generating further ground-breaking research, particularly in LifeSciences and Medicine.
From medieval stained glass windows through to all-optical computer chips, an understanding ofthe interaction of light with a complex medium has been a key to designing and tailoring theproperties of optoelectronic devices. Our research in Photonics and Materials Science andTechnology combines the strengths of nanomaterials and micro/nanoscale laser manufacturing, two important strands of technology at extreme scales that make it possible to develop anddeploy processes and materials at the cutting edge of technology. Our focus is on the importanceof miniaturization - to develop components, devices and systems of increasing efficiency andsmaller size - and advanced laser techniques that emerged as the key enabling technologies in thefield of micro and nano processes for the fabrication of such components and devices.
