We are a ‘Nut Aware’ school At Dundurn School we are committed to provide a safe environment that is inclusive for all children. In common with most other schools, we have a number of children with nut allergies. The purpose of this newsletter item is to give families the infor-mation they need to support us in providing a safe and inclusive school.

Why ‘Nut Aware’? Dundurn School is ‘Nut Aware’. We do not describe the school as being ‘Nut Free’ because we can’t guarantee that students or adults have not brought nuts, or traces of nuts, into the building.

What is Anaphylaxis? Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that can be life threatening. Approximately 1-2% of Cana-dians live with the risk of an anaphylactic reaction. Food allergies are the most common cause of anaphylaxis. The most common food allergens are peanuts, tree nuts, seafood, egg and milk prod-ucts. Anaphylaxis can affect multiple body systems. This can range from skin inflammation to ana-phylactic shock, which is an explosive over-reaction of the body’s immune system. This can be characterized by swelling, difficulty breathing, abdominal cramps, circulatory collapse, coma and, ultimately, death. Source: Anaphylaxis Canada Prevention It is our responsibility as a school community to avoid exposing students with allergies to the prod-ucts which could start an allergic reaction. This means that we take great care to avoid any prod-ucts that could contain allergens in our school snack program and other food items that are brought into school. We ask parents to exercise care when preparing lunches to carefully check labels and to not send any products which contain nuts, or traces of nuts. We also ask that families exercise care when baking for snack or fundraisers.

Treatment The best treatment for food allergies is prevention. However our staff are trained to recognize the symptoms of an allergic reaction and, if necessary, deliver the medications which help to reduce the reaction. When an incident of anaphylaxis occurs, first responders will be called, as well as the parent of the child. Common Questions

What if my child has peanut butter for breakfast? Could this cause an allergic reaction for another child at school?

The answer is ‘Yes’. Children should thoroughly wash hands and brush their teeth before coming to school.

Are the peanut butter alternatives, such as ‘Wow Butter’ safe to send to school? There are several peanut butter substitute products which do not contain common allergens, however we ask that parents exercise caution with using these products as they are difficult to distinguish from peanut butter and may cause confusion, or even anxiety, for students with allergies.

More Resources There are many websites which list nut-free and allergen-free products. These can be reached with

a simple Google search. However, families should still carefully check labels.

GOOD SAMARITAN FUND The Dundurn Good Samaritan Fund exists to help children and families access opportunities for sporting or cultural activities. If you would like your child to play hockey, learn to dance, learn to play an instrument or participate in any sporting or cultural activity but the cost is a barrier, please contact the Good Samaritan Fund for assistance. The Fund is administered by Jason Hill and Steve Menshenfriend. Anyone can apply and there is no means test.

To find out more, or apply for assistance, please contact Jason Hill at 492-2050.

Administering Medication School Board policy #413 regulates the ability of employees to dispense medications. If

your child requires medication, prescription or non-prescription, during school hours,

please contact the school to arrange to pick up the appropriate forms also on the

school web site. We are unable to dispense any medications until this procedure has

been followed.

Attendance If your child is absent from school, please contact the school before 8:50 a.m. OR send a note with a sibling or email. It is our policy to contact all parents if your child is absent and we have not re-ceived notification.

Pre Kindergarten - Mrs. Peters The Pre K classroom has been learning all about bugs, especially caterpillars & but-

terflies. Our caterpillar friends arrived on May 19 & they have grown a lot. We have watched them slowly make their chrysalises. We have transferred them to the butterfly cage and our first ones have emerged!! We have been learning new poems: “Caterpillars Changing” & “The Butterfly Song”. This Friday June 3rd we will get together with our Grade 2 big buddies for a butterfly party. We will do some crafts and activities together and of course share some food. Once our chrysalises change into butterflies we will have a butterfly release party.

We had our year end field trip to Brightwater Greenhouse west of Hanley on May 10th & 16th . We explored lots of vegetable plants, herbs & flowers. We even transplanted our own flower which we got to take home. Thanks to our parent drivers & chaperones. We had snacks at Mrs. Peters’ farm too!! We have since planted some potatoes and onions in the gar-den boxes by the school. We hope to use them in our stone soup next fall!!

Friday June 10th you can join us in Labyrinth Park for Snack day in the Park. We will get there about 10:30. Our final Pre K day is Monday June 13th. We are having a family pot-luck at Tristan’s back yard. Please sign up for a food item if you have not already done so. We will also play a few games. Mrs. Peters will be contacting you soon to arrange for year-end home visits if you have not arranged this yet,, please do so during drop off or pick up.

Finally I would like to thank the Pre K parents for an amazing, inspiring year of Pre K. Mrs. Seymour & I think we have the best jobs, & it has been a pleasure sharing this with you and your child. I need to thank Char as well; I feel lucky to be a part of the Pre K team. Dun-durn staff and students continue to embrace this program making it a fantastic year – year after year.

It is hard to believe how quickly the time is flying by! The end of the year will be here before we know it and it feels like there is still so much to do! May was a very busy month with the Grade 4’s participating in Jump Rope for Heart, the Saskatoon Symphony presenta-tion, the Bike Rodeo, Track and Field in Hanley, the Wilson Museum opening, and the annual Dundurn Art Show. We’re looking forward to a trip to Pike Lake, some pond dipping, and of course our annual Try-all-athon! In Lang Arts we are enjoying the novel Number the Stars, a very intriguing and suspenseful novel set in Denmark during World War II. In Social Studies we are learning all about Sas-katchewan explorers, fur traders, and the Metis. In Science we are learning about Habitats and Ecosystems. We’ve been busy skipping in Phys Ed, as well as practicing track events. We’re now focusing on lacrosse, Triathlon events and summer sports. In Math we have been working on Data Management and how to put that information into Pictographs and Bar Graphs. The students are currently working on making their own from data that they collect from the class!

Birthday greetings go out this month to Jordan, Katie, Marin, and Brook. Hope you all have terrific birthdays! In all the busy-ness and rush-ing around I have to take the time to give a huge ‘THANK YOU’ to all you parents. I really appreciate the support you have shown throughout the year.
