Construction Schedule• We are being told to plan for the following
• Beneficial occupancy of integration test facility 9/1/21
• Begin integration testing of components at ITF 2/1/22
• Cryostat ready for TPC installation 5/1/23 (1st month reserved
for installation of first wall of TPC field cage)
• Begin closing TCO 5/1/24 (February 24 reserved for second
wall of TPC field cage, March and April reserved for testing and
fixes before TCO closure)
• Detector ready for filling 10/1/24
• Detector ready for operations 10/1/25

Is this feasible ?• The assumption is that we install 1 row of APAs per week (after
some ramp up time)
• Work 2 shifts per day (6:30-16:30, 14:30-00:30 ?), 1+8+1 hours
• Day 1: cable and test first APA stack
• Day 2: cable and test second APA stack, insert first APA stack inthe cryostat
• Day 3: cable and test third APA stack, insert second APA stack, connect first APA stack to penetration and test
• Day 4: insert third APA stack, connect second APA stack to penetration and test
• Day 5: connect third APA stack to penetration and test
• Day 5 was planned for fixes/repairs ….

Is this realistic ?• We don’t know that we can stack, cable, and test two APAs in
two 8 hours shifts, needs to be demonstrated (need ~8 hours for
testing alone based on protoDUNE experience)
• Can we run all the cables through the chimneys, connect them
and run a basic test to ensure that we don’t need to take the two
stacked APAs out again in 1 day ?
- This is not the protoDUNE experience, need to understand what can
be improved and whether this is realistic
- I would still prefer to have a full test before putting next row of APAs
• There are a few extra weeks in the schedule, maybe we should
relax a little bit the schedule

Workshops• There will be a one day workshop prior to the collaboration
meeting to review the needs for integration and test facility (1/2
day) and to review the installation procedure (1/2 day)
• This is clearly insufficient, probably nothing more than two 15
minutes presentations “these are the plans of the CE
consortium”
• Dedicated workshop for the single phase TPC planned, possibly
for Sat 19 May (but need to make sure that everybody who
needs to be there can actually attend)

Prototypes (i)• Availability of ITF needs to be earlier
- APA consortium plans to start building APAs in early 2021
- Will need at least to stack them at ITF already in Spring 2021
- We could be able to start populating APAs with CE already in Fall
2021
• More prototypes
- protoDUNE APA #7 will be available for testing at CERN in
November 2018
- Will need full complement of protoDUNE electronics plus FEMBs
populated with new ASICs (multiple flavors) for testing prior to TDR
submission
- Checked that we will have access to cold box (will not be moved)

Prototypes (ii)• First three production APAs will go to CERN in early 2021
• Will populate with new electronics
• Discussion of a protoDUNE run 2 in 2021 / 2022
- TCO closure will be done in such a way that we will be able to
reopen, replace 3 APAs, close again
- This sets the scale for having electronics (pre-production quality)
available in Spring 2021

CE Timeline• We are now in the first iteration of the ASICs
• There will be time for 2 more iterations (as long as the
development + testing cycle is short) prior to pre-production
• Will need to make sure that we have a detailed plan available of
what we test and when
• Will need funding for this
• Schedule may be to aggressive, but planning for 3 cycles allows
for problems we may find in ASIC development

FY18• The US now has a budget and this may will good for
LBNF/DUNE
• Exact allocation between LBNF/DUNE not yet clear
• We have tried to restrict expenses for FY18 (in part due to cost overruns in protoDUNE)
• Not clear that we will be given a green light to expand scope, but clearly need to do in some areas
- Need to design / fabricate FEMBs for new ASICs and have them ready for testing on protoDUNE APA #7 in November at CERN and on small TPC at Fermilab
- May start next design cycle of LArASIC early
- Please send suggestions, will try to argue with LBNF/DUNE management that this is needed and urgent

Current WBS/Schedule/Deliverables
• DOE IPR recommended having updated cost/schedule ready in
October 2018
• This requires a lot of work
• Preliminary WBS ready (for DUNE international / DUNE-US) in
DocDB-5612
• Will also have a preliminary schedule available there today
• Please check for missing deliverables
