aSix months ago, Chicago’s oldest bookstore still belonged to Chicago. Nestled in Hyde Park along a favorite footpath of university students, O’Gara & Wilson, Ltd. was – from the outside – perfectly situated to survive the newest wave of digital literary consumerism. After all, it only makes sense that antiquarian booksellers (the few that are left) would find their natural habitats in large metropolitan areas stocked with academics, affluent hobbyists and focused 30-somethings who still value the cultivation of a personal library. The fact that Chesterton, Indiana – population 12,000 – managed to steal not only Chicago’s oldest bookstore, but also a little piece of the city’s heart and soul, is stunning.

oOr is it? When they decided to leave behind the unfortunate municipal management of Chicago’s Hyde Park, shop owners Doug and Jill Wilson knew that Chesterton’s historic downtown shopping district was the place to go. the couple had a long relationship with the town, and were excited to deepen the connection. “Chicago was raising taxes every other year, as well as enacting preposterous inspection and licensing fees that bore no connection to reality,” Doug explained. “then, when the university started providing shuttle buses for its students, our foot traffic virtually disappeared. everywhere we looked, our neighbors were closing their doors. But in Chesterton, we witnessed the opposite process. More businesses were coming in and staying open for long periods of time. The choice was not difficult.”

now, as one of the more severe winters in recent years loses ground to chorus frogs and bluebird sightings, Chesterton’s newest resident at the corner of 3rd street & Broadway is thriving. in the world of antiquarian booksellers, ‘thriving’ is a ratio of discoveries: the number of people who find delight in the treasure hunt of used book shopping divided by the number who can’t quite wrap their minds around it. so

far, O’Gara & Wilson, Ltd. is solving the equation, one curious customer at a time. Of course, they have some help. From the street view, O’Gara & Wilson, Ltd. Antiquarian Booksellers is romantic, with beautiful brick frontage; symmetrical, story-high windows; and noble, serif font on both sign and door. When Mark swanson, owner of the former Brainstorm Computers building, determined to relocate his business in order to make room for a “shopable storefront” in the heart of his town’s shopping district, Jill and Doug Wilson knew they’d found their new home. “i couldn’t imagine a more beautiful bookstore,” Doug reflected. Indeed. Smooth wooden floorboards run the length of the store, underpinning six rows of thoughtful wooden bookcases. A small study in the back is mirrored in the front – both fitted with lamps, chairs, newspapers and other amusements from the 1920s. Blown glass medicinal decanters keep company with thick pottery and a gorgeous vintage remington typewriter. if you look up (which is doubtful, given the visual feast at eye-level), you’re treated to an expanse of ornate, milk-white pressed tin reminiscent of a turn-of-the-last-century

formal dining room. the books, at times, seem almost like props from an old film like Casablanca - that is, if rick had reached for a book instead of a bottle in order toforget his lovely ilsa.

Only the books aren’t props. they’re earnest translations of a complicated world into manageable pieces. they sit still – on the shelves, in your hands, and in your mind. In an era flush with moveable, mashable parts, it’s remarkable that something as self-confident and unapologetic as a printed book still exists. “i’m concerned with the survival of printed text,” Doug explained. “When you own a 1st edition, you own something immutable, with all its errors and forthrightness. electronic books – especially political texts – are changed immediately when errors or social gaffs are brought to light. there’s no true preservation of history.”

While it’s understandable to presume that an antiquarian bookseller would sell only rare and dusty tomes, the truth is far more interesting. “each volume in our store has been hand-selected to appeal to the varied interests of our customers.” Jill shared. “i’ve been encouraged by the very young people who come in, gather up a big stack

of books with myriad titles to purchase…and then come back later with their friends for another visit.” The Wilsons’ inventory reflects the depth and breadth of their constituency. Leather-bound, multi-volume classics share space with leadership titles by Covey and Maxwell; a massive “Banish Your Belly” Men’s Health publication; and a travel guide to ireland that may or may not have incriminating stories totell about its previous owner.

“How much more meaningful it is to hold in your hands something that belonged to someone else, with their notes and pressed flowers,” Doug said. “Given the choice of something transient or something permanent and beautiful, i would always choose the latter. We’re running an 18th century business in a 21st century world, but as long as there are people out there who value the process of discovery, there will be a place for us.”

Doug and Jill Wilson have lived in a 19th century home in Chesterton for nearly 25 years. the couple raised three children - ellen (23), Colin (19), and evan (16) - in the Duneland community, and are currently cohabitating with a pair of corgis - Pippin and Gwennie. O’Gara & Wilson, Ltd. Antiquated Booksellers is located at 223 Broadway in Chesterton, and may be reached via 219.728.1326 or websitewww.ogaraandwilson.com.

Historians know this. the terms of the agreement are clear: in exchange for a second life, the ghost reveals its transgressions. the unfortunate caveat is that historians can only explore the vagaries of another life by keeping a handle on their own. understandably, this scares away all but the ghost’s most ardent suitors. it’s not just anyone who can resurrect a soul from the grave while still makingsure the kids brush their teeth.

in her book “Don Drummond: the Genius and tragedy of the World’s Greatest trombonist,” author Heather Augustyn delivers on her end of the bargain, breathing life into the heyday of Jamaican ska music through compelling storytelling and tenacious investigation. Heather has chosen for her ghost not just a person, but a genre, and over the past decade, she’s become something of a world expert on the subject. But don’t tell her that.

“there are a lot of people with encyclopedic knowledge of every ska album ever recorded,” Heather explained. “i don’t have that, and i never will. What i’ve built is an understanding of the people behind the records – how they couldn’t make enough money to feed their families, so they picked up a horn to make a living. there are hundreds of those stories to be uncovered. Here in the u.s., we do a pretty good job of celebrating our musicians. But in Jamaica, so many of themlive in obscurity and die destitute.”

enter Don Drummond, the touchstone of the book’s conceit. the art of illuminating a life is part natural talent, part mastery of trade. Heather exhibits both as she chronicles Don’s fortunate education at Jamaica’s Alpha Boys school, sublime coming of age in the Wareika Hills, outrageous exploitation at the hands of music executives, and dramatic submission to schizophrenia at the zenith of his musical career. Drummond died in a mental institution at the age of 35, but not before stabbing his lover - Margarita the rhumba queen – to death. “Don’t tell me the moon is shining,” wrote russian physician, dramaturge and author Anton Chekhov. “show me the light on broken glass.” Chekhov would have been pleased with Heather’s search for her ghost. “i walked the same paths as Drummond,” she wrote, “went to the same fields, stepped onto the same stage and stared into the audience as he must have….i touched his trombone. i peered beneath his home, through the gaping

holes in the fallen cinderblock foundation where old 45s lay in the underbelly, left by long-gone tenants. i walked the barren earth around the room where he slept, now devoid of vegetation and mottled with debris and lost memories. i examined the home from all angles, circling it like a ravenon carrion.”

Hundreds of pages – thousands, maybe – of hand-transcribed interviews with those who knew (or knew of) Don Drummond keep company in Heather’s home office with boxes of cassette tapes, photos, Jamaica Gleaner newspaper clippings, official letters from museums and other record-keepers, LPs, CDs, liner notes, and an impressive library of popular and obscure Jamaican music texts. it’s not just the wealth of information that defies comprehension. It’s the fact that it’s all been digested, annotated, cross-referenced, categorized and filed. “I give full credit to Chesterton’s Speech and Debate team for my organizational skills,” Heather said. “i learned how to research and produce an argument from my time in extemporaneous speaking and Congressional Debate. i still think about how much i gained from that experience, and how thoroughly it’s influenced my career.”

in spite of two other well-received books about ska music (and another already half-completed), scores of international radio interviews, keynote presentations, and blog fans, Heather is not convinced she’s fulfilled her contract with the ghost.

Falling in love with a ghost is a binding contract.

“it is a painting whose brush never quite touches the subject,” Heather wrote of her research in the book’s first chapter, “yet fills in the space around it to reveal the subject’s shape.” Heather is too humble in the assessment of her work. wWith her book “A Miracle in Progress,” author Ann Howard proves to be salinger’s favorite kind of writer. she captivates her readers with delightful humor and heartwarming compassion, luring them into vicarious friendship not only with her, but with each of the endearing personalities who inhabit her pages in technicolor. Like any good friend, Ann’s words teach, inspire and comfort, all the while building little bridges across every conceivable barrier to her story’s front stoop -Duneland resale.

As a hostess in her own home, Ann is everything you’d predict. Before settling in for her chat with Duneland tODAY Magazine, she’d supplied her interviewer with hot coffee, a cuddly puppy and a cozy seat in her bright kitchen. “i’m sorry the house is such a mess,” she apologized. “We’re leaving to see family tomorrow, and we still have a lot of packing to do.” neat stacks of presents and cardboard boxes were arranged in the dining room. Ann’s house was messy in the way that her coffee spoon was messy – marginally, and with worthy purpose.

“i didn’t want this to be my book,” Ann began. “i wanted this to be our book. i wrote it to honor the workers of Duneland resale, and the Duneland community as a whole.” Ann’s tribute to the store and its environs is thoroughly readable as she navigates the roles of storyteller, sage and vaudeville comedian with equal charm and finesse. Through her, we meet the “back door boys,” the “worker bees,” the “tornado,” the inspirational Miss Martha, and more “earth Angels” than canreasonably be accounted for per capita.

When a book is both funny and heart-wrenching, you find yourself recommending it to all sorts of people you normally wouldn’t. And when that book is embedded with convincing evidence that a higher power is helping out those who need it most on a regular basis? Well, then you begin recommending it to complete strangers. “the most profound

God was with us that day.” [spoiler Alert: section 4, page 150; a mysterious dog keeps a young woman from freezing to death in thomas Centennial Park, thendisappears into thin air.]

It would have been easy – and justified – for Ann to focus solely on tragic and shocking stories for her book. there were certainly enough of them. But that would have been only part of the story. “i wanted this to be the quintessential feel good book,”

Ann explained. “i wanted people to understand what an amazing community this is, and that miracles happen here on a routine basis. Maybe it’s that at Duneland resale we’re Christian-based, and we’re open to receiving things that others wouldn’t be. Whatever the case, volunteering atresale has strengthened my faith.”

Ann’s story is as optimistic and infectious as bubble-gum. What a gift, to have local, first-hand accounts to remind us that not everything in the world can be explained by mathematics or physics. some things - especially when they occur with

Rob Pikula o“Our Children Come First” is Rob’s first-hand account of his marriage to, divorce from, and decades-long entanglement with a woman grappling unfathomable mental illness. 159 pages of stark language and detail draw the reader into a blow-by-blow account of what it means to father a child with a woman who becomes progressively unable (and unwilling) to be a parent. the book is staggering in its transparency…and in its heartbreak.

the world has a hard time accepting when a father is more fit than a mother to take care of a little girl. Our court system, especially, is wedded to the notion that mothers always make the best custodial parents – even if those mothers are proven to be deeply ambivalent about their own roles as caregivers. As rob and his daughter suffered through his wife’s escalating instability, there came a moment when he realized his child neededprotection from the woman he’d married.

“this book began with a police report,” rob said. “i was seeking full, sole and legal custody. if i was

a mother, that would’ve been a given. But since i was a father, i had to work twice as hard to prove that i was capable of taking care of my child. When you go to court, the judge doesn’t know who’s telling the truth, so that made it even more difficult. i was advised to start documenting everything.” And so he did. Documenting a life in real time is not easy. rob spent his mornings caring for his daughter, his days at work in a fire protection firm, and his evenings building a safe environment for his little girl. At night, after she’d gone to sleep, he’d write. He filled a notebook. Then another, and then another. every detail of every encounter with his wife’s bizarre emotional rollercoaster was carefully recorded in neat, dated entries. Many years later, after he’d won and kept full, sole and legal custody of his daughter, rob began thinking that he’d like to tell others about his experiences. For more than a year, he funneled decades of notes into a manuscript. then, with guidance from an international publishing lawyer, he gathered his journals, court documents and police reports. robwas ready to share his story.

Author of Our Children Come First: A Parent’s Responsibility to Do the Right Thing Amidst Emotional Chaos

When you meet Rob Pikula, you can tell he’s on a journey like nothing you’ve ever experienced. It hangs in the air like age, intractable and untranslatable. War veterans have similar carriage and cadence – as if each breath is weighed against a balance to see if it’s absolutely necessary. The parallel isn’t surprising. As a single father who’s carved out and defended a safe corner of the world for his daughter against repeated attack for more than 20 years, Rob’s been on the front lines of a domestic battle as mind-numbing as any tour of duty.

“i feel like this all happened to me so that i could help other people,” rob said. “i’ve been in court 10 times to keep my daughter safe, and i ended up helping my ex-wife’s second husband with his custody battle, too. i learned through extensive research that nationally, our system – the courts and child protective services – is really broken when it comes to parents’ and children’s rights. After all of my research, i understand why the judge made certain decisions in my case. But people need to know what’s going on nationally so that they can handle their own cases more effectively.” From California to West Virginia, state legislators are taking a close look at a system that’s failing too often in its mandate to care for our country’s most vulnerable citizens. “there are many hardworking people trying to do their jobs well in child protective services,” rob said, “but there’s also a lot of corruption, and some horrific cases of abuse, neglect and even death. It has to change. We have to ask ourselves: How do we affect change respectfully and peacefully within the CPs system, so that all individuals involved in a case can make better decisions and understand that their decisions are for the children – not the system?” Rob knows that fixing what’s broken won’t be easy. But then, nothing worth going to war for ever is.

“THe fIRST feW yeARS Of A CHILD’S LIfe ARe CRITICAL TO THe DeveLOPmeNT Of NORmAL vISION. if caught before the age of six, otherwise catastrophic abnormalities can be remedied with relative ease. the diagnoses sound intimidating - Myopia, Hyperopia, strabismus, Astigmatism, Anisocoria, Cataract, Coloboma, Ptosis – but the truth is that many can be treated with an eyepatch, eye drops or minor corrective surgery. that is, if they’re caught in time. if they’re not, the child could suffer permanent vision loss or complete blindness.

At the 1925 Lions Club Convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, Helen keller stood before the assembly and urged her listeners to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.” Previously a generalized volunteer group, the Club became galvanized around keller’s irresistible plea to aid the blind and visually impaired. From their birthplace in Chicago, the Lions ventured out into the world, eventually becoming the largest service organization on the planet. today, there are 1.35 million Lions in more than 46,000 clubs in every nook and cranny of the globe working tirelessly towhittle down the effects of eye disease.

Chesterton has nurtured its own contribution to this colossal effort for eight decades. in that time, the Chesterton Lions Club has raised tens of thousands of dollars for local projects and international initiatives with sight conservation as a primary mission. “One of the things we’re really proud of,” said Club secretary Don Habel,“is that we provide vision screening for all preschoolers and kindergarteners in the Duneland school Corporation, as well as in the Discovery Charter school, the Head start Program, and otherindependent schools in the vicinity.”

the screening process itself takes 5 seconds. each child stands 4-5 feet from a hand-held scanner, which triggers a camera to take a photo at precisely the right moment. together with school nurses, Club members conduct the screens and send results to experts in indianapolis, who then contact parents directly with results and follow-up recommendations, if needed. Of the children screened, 4% (or 1 in 25) have one or more of the conditions screened for, and are referred to physicians. “We need parental consent to conduct the screening, so it’s very important for us to communicate that this is a free, completely non-invasive, extremely brief process.” Don explained. “if these conditions are caught early on, they’re nearly 100% correctable. As kids get older, however, the disorders get much moredifficult – if not impossible - to treat.”

in addition to conducting school vision screenings, the Chesterton Lions Club finances eye examinations and glasses for needy adults both locally and abroad; contributes to the Leader Dogs for the Blind Program; supports the indiana school for the Blind & Visually impaired; backs the indiana Lions eye & tissue transplant Bank; and donates to the Lions Clubs international Foundation, which dedicates its resources to world-wide prevention of and care for eye sight diseases. the Club also

has installed optical equipment in the thomas and Hageman Public Libraries, as well as financed the installation of bleachers and a water fountain at the new ball park for the state Park Little League Challengers – a baseball program designed for children with physical, mental orvisual impairments.

“Our mission is to improve the quality of life in this community,” Don reflected. “And without community support, we couldn’t accomplish anything. For a Club like the Lions, the principal is to collect and redistribute the support of the community to help those who need it most. Our 52 members don’t get financial reward. Their satisfaction comes from making a difference. We may work hard, but we have fun doing it.”

A bright orAnge monster sAt in the middle of the clAssroom. it wAs stuffed, of course, which mAde it mArginAlly less scAry, but the teAcher still couldn’t imAgine thAt Any of her students would pick the fluorescent AnomAly As their reAding buddy – not when there were plenty of sensible beArs, girAffes, puppiesAnd rAbbits on hAnd. As she called her students’ numbers one-by-one, the pile of stuffed animals dwindled around the monster, and she began to worry that one of her kids was going to be stuckwith a Buddy they didn’t want.

Meanwhile, a little boy fidgeted uncontrollably as he waited for his number to be called. What if someone else took it first? What if he had to pick a different one? Why was his number so high? then, just when he’d started to give up hope, his teacher called the number he’d been holding his breath to hear. the boy catapulted himself from his desk, ran to the small pile of toys, grabbed the orange monster from the bottom of it, and hugged it to his chest. “it looks just like me!” he exclaimed with an infectious smile. the little boy had brightred hair. so began the life of a reading Buddy for united Way regional Volunteer Center’s i need a Hug Program. since the initiative’s inception, more than 12,000 stuffed animals have been distributed to

1st and 2nd graders in more than 100 classrooms throughout northwest indiana. in an effort to increase the number of students reading at grade level (and their oral fluency), the kids read aloud to their reading Buddies for at least 15 minutes every school day. some stay at their desks while doing so, while others are allowed to scatter to their classroom’s four corners. Afterwards, some reading Buddies are stored at their owners’ desks, while others are tucked back into supply cubes or coat closets. in combination with each teacher’s supportive curriculum, the outcome is impressive. 48% more

first graders and 28% more 2nd graders read at grade level after participating inthe i need a Hug program.

the percentage of students meeting the Oral reading Fluency Benchmark (as defined by the mClass DiBeLs standardized test) is even better: a 52% increase for 1st graders and a 29% increase for 2nd graders. As a bonus, the data shows that students read more often - and read more just for fun - after striking up friendships with their reading Buddies.

not surprisingly, teachers clamor to get involved with the program - and not just because of the test scores. “My students love the comfort of holding a reading Buddy as they read,” said Linda rodenbarger, 2nd grade teacher at Paul saylor elementary in south Haven. “there’s no pressure, or ‘scared’ feeling as they read aloud to their Buddies. They gain confidence to then read aloud in small groups, or even in front of the whole class.” More than just motivational tools, the stuffed animals become integral parts of the children’s lives as they learn to care for their furry friends. One teacher noticed that after reading time, one of her students was covering up her reading Buddy with an opened folder. soon, all of her students

began tucking in their Buddies under these make-believe “blankets.”

Any teacher – or a school system as a whole – can make a request to be included. “We distribute Buddies to our current classrooms first, then on a first-come-first-served basis as inventory allows,” explained Mackenna Dickt, a program coordinator. “the reading Buddies go home with the students to inspire good reading habits over the summer, which is quite a special moment. We’ve had many parents tell us how excited their children were to bring the reading Buddies home to ‘meet the family!’ However, this does mean that the stuffed

animals have to be replaced every year for the incoming classes. to satisfy current demand, we would need to collect and distribute 5,000 stuffed animals every year. Last year, we distributed nearly 3,700 and still had a waitlist, so the need isdefinitely there.”

Aside from orange monsters, what sorts of animals make the best reading Buddies? According to the adorable “Anatomy of a reading Buddy” graphic on the program’s website, the stuffed animals should be 12-16 inches tall; soft and cuddly; fit in a child’s lap; and – most importantly – be brand new. so, while you may be tempted to clear out your college student’s closet while he’s away at school, those teddy bears will need to go to a different home. “it’s so sweet when people donate a big collection of stuffed animals,” Mackenna said, “but Health Code regulations prevent us from givingaway anything that’s not brand new.”

“Monetary donations are gratefully accepted, as they allow us to accommodate more classrooms by purchasing stuffed animals in bulk,” Mackenna pointed out. $5 will put a reading Buddy in a child’s lap, and $150 would sponsor a classroom. We hope that individuals and businesses would consider sponsoring the program. We do have a lot of clever ideas for drives, so i’d encourage anyone with an interest in the program to reach out to united Way, so we can work together to get those readingBuddies in our community’s classrooms!”
