History

In the early days of its existence, decorators and their suppliers were the main

customers for Dulux, with Say Dulux to your decoratorused as an advertising slogan in

the 1950s. y 195!, Deluxe was availa"le in the retail mar#et and ten years later the

famous $ld %nglish &heepdogwas used in advertisements, to the point where 'Dulux

dog' has "ecome a common nic#name for the "reed. (he name Dulux is derived from

the words Du)ont and *uxury.

In 010, alongside Deluxe alentine, oral and 2arshall, Dulux launched the *et-s

olour )ro/ect.+1+3 glo"al movement which called communities around the world to

paint grey pu"lic spaces with "right colours. (he initiative first went to ra4il with a

group of volunteers painting the *apa &tairs in io de 6aneiroin 2arch 010.+!(his was

followed "y the community painting event at the irginia )rimary &chool in (ower

Hamlets.+7It then went to )urohiton 8i Haveli community suare in 6odhpur.+5(hese

painting events were filmed and captured in a tv commercial -Dulux :alls-directed

"y3dam ergand documentaries on their ;ou(u"e hannel.(he colour movement

3n $ld %nglish &heepdog, mascot for the Dulux "rand since the 19>0s

(he $ld %nglish &heepdog is the "randmascot for Dulux paint. (he dog was first

introduced in advertising campaigns in 19>1. &ince then they have "een a constant and

highly popular feature of Dulux television and print adverts wherever the paint is sold.

&o much so, that many people in those mar#ets refer to the "reed as a -Dulux dog-

rather than a &heepdog.

$ver the years, different dogs have appeared in the adverts. However, they all loo# very

similar, partially as a result of most of them "eing selected from a closely related line

of pedigree dogs. (he first Dulux dog was Shepton Dash, who held the role for eight

years. His successor, Fernville Lord Digby, was the most famous Dulux dog and also

made his owner, ynthia Harrison, famous. :hen filming advertisements, Dig"y wastreated li#e a star, "eing driven to the studio in a chauffeurdriven car. ar"ara

:oodhousewas employed to train Dig"y and his three stunt dou"les, who were used

whenever specific tric#s or actions needed to "e filmed.

?am"it @ another Dulux dog, was used in a photographic shoot in 19A0 for )hilips ideo

and its new generation of video recorders. y the time the shoot was finished there was

enough hair to fill a mattress @ the dog was constantly groomed during the shoot.
