COACHES

DAN BURTHEAD COACH • 3rd SEASON

Dan Burt was named head coach of the Duquesne women’s basketball program on April 27, 2013. In just two years time, he has had unprecedented success.

Burt is coming off his second season as head coach - one that was touted by many as a rebuilding year. The team that was predicted to finish seventh in the Atlantic 10 Conference finished third, had one of the most successful years in program his-tory recording the most league wins (12) in team history. Overall, the Dukes’ 23 vic-

tories was the third-most for the program all-time. The non-conference season was highlighted by Duquesne being crowned champion of the Ball State Federal Credit Union Classic as well as defeating cross-town rival Pitt in The City Game. After dropping its first two home decisions to NCAA Tournament teams Princeton and Syracuse, Duquesne went on to win its next 12 at the A.J. Palumbo Center. During that streak, the Dukes won a single-season program-best eight straight Atlantic 10 Conference games. This season marked the first time Duquesne was undefeated in conference play at the Palumbo Center. For the seventh straight season, Duquesne won 20-or-more games (just one of 18 teams in NCAA Division I that has won 20-or-more games each year since the 2009 season).

For the first time since 2006, the Dukes advanced to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship. Duquesne earned a #3 seed and a bye into the quarterfinal round, where whey defeated Rhode Island before falling to conference runner-up and NCAA Elite Eight team Dayton. Despite having a top 50 RPI, the Dukes did not receive an invitation to the NCAA Tournament. However, they tied their best finish in the WNIT, advancing to the 3rd Round of the 64-team tournament defeating Youngstown State and Richmond before falling at tournament runner-up West Virginia.

Junior guard April Robinson was named Atlantic 10 Second-Team All-Conference as well as College Sports Madness Atlantic 10 First-Team All-Conference. She was one of 31 finalists for the 2015 Nancy Lieber-man Award as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Kenny Kallina of Florida Girl’s Basketball along with John McGraw Scouting Service named Burt its Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.

In his first season on the Bluff, Burt guided the Dukes to their sixth straight 20-win season. Duquesne played in the postseason for the sixth straight season, capping the year with a 2nd Round appearance in the WNIT.

The team made program history on December 1, 2013 when they played their first-ever game outside the United States. The Dukes and #5 Notre Dame played a neutral site game at Ryerson University in the venue formerly known as Maple Leaf Gardens in downtown Toronto. The contest sold out in a matter of hours.

Burt became the first 1st year head coach to win 10 Atlantic 10 Conference games since 2009. The 10 wins tied Duquesne’s second-best total since joining the league in 1983-84. The Dukes also set a then single-season team record with seven straight conference victories from Jan. 8 to Feb. 1, 2014. The winning steak culminated with Duquesne receiv-ing three votes in the prestigious USA Today/Coaches Poll.

The end of the A-10 season saw two of Burt’s student-athletes named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team in Wumi AgunbiadeClick here to hear it and Raegan MooreClick here to hear it. The season concluded with a sixth straight post-season berth. The Dukes defeated Mount St. Mary’s in the 1st Round of the WNIT before falling in the 2nd Round at Michigan.

One of just five NCAA Division I 1st year head coaches to win 20 games, Burt was named a finalist for the 2014 Spalding Maggie Dixon Division I Rookie Coach of the Year award, which honors a WBCA Division I head coach who has led his

COACHESor her team to a successful season during his or her first year at the helm.

During his eight years on the Bluff, including six as the program’s top assistant coach, Burt helped the Dukes to 166 victories and seven WNIT appearances. He helped recruit and coach 10 players who earned all-conference honors a total of 18 times, eight 1,000 point scorers and the 2008, 2009 (Kristi Little) and 2013 (Jocelyn Floyd) Atlantic 10 Defensive Players of the Year.

A key component in Burt’s coaching philosophy is player development. In his time at Duquesne, seven of Burt’s players have gone on to play professionally overseas: Vanessa Abel - Germany and Sweden, Wumi Agunbiade - Romania, Jocelyn Floyd - Germany, Alex Gensler - Hun-gary, Kristi Little - Hungary, Orsi SzecsiClick here to hear it - Hungary, Diana Voynova - Bulgaria and Italy.

Recognized as one of the country’s top recruiters, Burt assembled a 2011 class that was ranked 38th in the nation by ESPN HoopGurlz and 47th by Blue Star Basketball. Duquesne’s class of 2013 was named the 39th-best in the nation by Blue Star Basketball. The class of 2015 has been ranked 52nd best in the country by The Collegiate Girls Basketball Report, owned by Dan Olsen who prepares the re-cruiting rankings for ESPNW.

Burt was instrumental in recruiting the 2011 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Wumi Agunbiade and Orsi Szecsi, who was a member of the 2011 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. Agunbiade was ranked the 43rd best power forward by ESPN HoopGurlz and 108th best player by Blue Star Basketball. Szecsi was rated the 14th best small forward and 77th best player by ESPN HoopGurlz. Blue Star ranked Szecsi the 84th best player overall and Scout.com had her at the 17th best player in the Middle Atlantic Region. Jose-Ann JohnsonClick here to hear it was listed as the 38th best post player in North America by ESPN Hoop-Gurlz and was the highest ranking of any player from Canada in the 2011 recruiting class.

A native of nearby Washington, Pa., Burt came to Duquesne from Bucknell where he was an assistant for three seasons (2004-07). He was also an assistant for three seasons at both West Virginia (1998-2001) and UNC Wilmington (2001-04).

In June 2013, Burt was selected as one of 30 head coaches across the nation to participate in the Center For Coaching Excellence by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The event intro-duces coaches to various aspects of leadership and provide a deeper understanding and appreciation of the importance of ethics and integrity in college women’s basketball through a rigorous curriculum presented in a seminar-style environment. The exclusive invitation-only elite leadership program was held at Columbia University in New York City.

Burt has also facilitated roundtable discussions at the WBCA National Coaches Convention. He was one of 15 assistant coaches selected from around the country to lead the discussions in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2011 and 2013. He also coordinated a roundtable meeting for the entire athletic department at UNC Wilmington during 2003-04 that focused on recruiting for all sports at the school.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE

2015-16 DUQUESNE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCEABOUT THE A-10 On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country.

That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlan-tic 10 – Davidson, Dayton, Duquesne, Fordham, George Mason, George Washington, La Salle, of Massachusetts, of Rhode Island, of Richmond, St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph’s, Saint Louis and Virginia Commonwealth.

The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference.
