Dan Burt, the only coach in the history of Duquesne women’s basketball to lead the program to the NCAA tour-nament, was named head coach of the program on April 27, 2013. In his five seasons leading the Dukes, he has had unprecedented success in both the Atlantic 10 Conference as well as nationally. It took only 149 games for Burt to claim his 100th career victory, the 15th fastest to that feat in NCAA women’s basketball history. During his 11 seasons on the Bluff, including six as the program’s top assistant coach, Burt helped the Dukes to 237 victories and ten postseason appearances. He has recruited and coached 14 players who earned all-conference honors a total of 28 times as well as 11 1,000 point scor-ers. He has also coached four players that received the Atlantic 10 Con-ference highest postseason awards – Player of the Year (April Robinson in 2016), Defensive Player of the Year (Kristi Little in 2008 & 2009 and Joce-lyn Floyd in 2011), Rookie of the Year (Wumi Agunbiade in 2011) and Sixth Woman of the Year (Deva’Nyar Work-man in 2016) A key component in Burt’s coaching philosophy is player and career devel-opment. In his time at Duquesne, 13 of Burt’s players have gone on to play professionally overseas and 100% have earned their degrees. In June 2013, Burt was selected as one of 30 head coaches across the nation to participate in the Center For Coaching Excellence by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The event introduces coaches to various aspects of leadership and provide a deeper understanding and appreci-ation of the importance of ethics and integrity in college women’s basketball through a rigorous curriculum present-ed in a seminar-style environment. . Burt has also facilitated roundtable discussions at the WBCA National

Coaches Convention. He was one of 15 assistant coaches selected from around the country to lead the discus-sions in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2011 and 2013. He also coordinated a roundtable meeting for the entire ath-letic department at UNC Wilmington during 2003-04 that focused on recruit-ing for all sports at the school. In 2002, Burt worked with YES - Youth Education through Sports - Basketball Clinic as part of the Final Four Festivi-ties in San Antonio, Texas. He reprised the role at the 2014 Final Four in Nash-ville, Tenn. YES is the NCAA’s premier outreach to youth across the country, connecting young athletes with col-legiate coaches and student-athletes to provide fundamental instruction in sports, conditioning and life skills at select collegiate championships. Burt graduated from Trinity High School in Washington, Pa. prior to earn-ing a bachelor’s degree in physical education from West Liberty State Col-lege in 1993. While a Hilltopper, Burt was a scholar-athlete award winner as a member of the men’s basketball team. Following graduation, Burt worked as an admissions counselor at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va. for five years. He was an assistant coach with the men’s team during the 1994-95 cam-paign and was also a college bas-ketball referee in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland. Burt got his coaching start at West Vir-ginia (1998-01) and had stops at UNC Wilmington (2001-04) and Bucknell (2004-07) before arriving on the Bluff in April 2007. Burt is married to Kata Katan-ich-Burt, who received her MBA from Duquesne’s Donahue Graduate School of Business. The couple have two sons - Soma and Milan.

BURT’S DEGREES OF SEPERATIONSix degrees of separation is the theory that any person on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. The six degrees of separation theory was first proposed in 1929 by Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy and execut-ed by Duquesne sports information director Ryan Gavatorta in 2016 using Dan Burt as a subject. Burt can be connected to every opposing head coach via players and coaches by as few two and as many as 13 intercessors.

NOTESGETTING TO KNOW THE DUKES Duquesne returns all five starters from last season’s team and was selected to finish first in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Dukes garnered 12 of the 14 first-place votes for a total of 194 points. Seniors Chassidy Omogrosso and Julijana Vojinovic, who were both named to the Preseason All-Conference First Team. The duo are joined on the preseason squad by senior team-mates Kadri-Ann Lass, who was named to the Preseason All-Conference Second Team, and Conor Richardson, who was named to the Preseason All-Defensive Team. The Dukes reached the postseason for the 10th con-secutive season last year advancing to the third round of the WNIT.

FIRST-CLASS CHAS Omogrosso is coming off another stellar year in 2017-18. Her 17.3 points per game led the Dukes and was fourth in the Atlantic 10 Conference. She made 92 3-pointers which set a single-season school record and was the most in the A-10. The junior guard scored her 1,000 career point in Duquesne’s 70-51 victory at VCU on Jan. 7th. She was named 2018 A-10 All Conference First-Team. On Feb. 7 at Massachusetts, she became Duquesne’s all-time leader in 3-pointers made.

SERBIAN SENSATION Vojinovic continued her sharp-shooting ways last season. She was second in the A-10 and 23rd in the NCAA with a 41.6 3-point field goal percentage. She set a new career-high when she scored 28 points against VCU, which was one of 10 20-point games. For her efforts, she was named A-10 All Con-ference Second-Team.

THE ESTONIAN ERASER Lass set the Duquesne career, single-season and tied her own single-game school record in blocks last season. She finished ninth in the NCAA and first in the A-10 with 97 blocks this season. Her eight blocks against ETSU tied her school record she set her freshman year against UMass. She set the program record at Saint Joseph’s, helping the Dukes to their first-ever win on Hawk Hill.

CON-TINUING SUCCESS Richardson continued to have a high level of defensive prowess last season. Although her accomplishments did not often show on the stat sheet, she continued to be the nucleus of the defense this season. She netted a career-highs of 22 points at ETSU and seven assists against North Carolina A&T.

CANNON FIRE Paige Cannon worked her way into the starting lineup last season. She set personal bests in every category including a career-high 19 points at Davidson and a career-high 15 rebounds at Virginia.

KUTTOR HOPES TO REBOUND The Dukes top rebounder Eniko Kuttor will return for her junior season. After sitting out the 2016-17 season as a redshirt, Kuttor was a monster on the boards, grabbing almost seven rebounds per game while averaging just over 15 minutes per contest. She is curently rehabbing an injury and dresses for the first time this season against UCF.

SUPER SOPHS Both Libby Bazelak and Amanda Kalin had productive freshmen seasons last year.

Bazelak played in 33 games, making four starts. She scored a season-high 14 points vs. #1 UConn.

Kalin played in 24 games, but missed nine due to injury. She scored 11 points in her collegiate debut at Charlotte.

FAMILIAR FACES The Dukes will welcome back three players who did not see action on last season’s squad.

Guard Nina Aho missed all of the 2017-18 season with an injury. She played in all 34 games, making 15 starts as a freshman in 2016-17.

Guard Halle Bovell was a developmental redshirt last season. She played in 29 contests in 2016-17.

Forward Angela Staffileno was also a developmental redshirt last season.

SE RÉTABLIR AP! Anie-Pier Samson missed 12 games last season with an injury and is cur-rently rehabbing an injury.

WHAT A SURPRISE! On June 14th after the Dukes 6:30am conditioning session, Coach Dan Burt brought everyone into the film room, telling the team he had paperwork for them. He gave everybody unsealed envelopes that contained letters that said “We are offering Kiersten Elliott a scholarship in ten seconds...SHHH!!!” Kiersten’s envelope was sealed and said “Congratulations on two years of hard work. You’ve earned your scholarship!”

KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY Kiersten’s younger sister Caroline joined the team in June. The freshman led Vincentian Academy to three WPIAL and two PIAA titles.

KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY...AGAIN The Dukes welcome Laia Sole to the team this year. Her older sister Judith played two seasons with Duquesne, graduating last season. Laia comes to the Bluff from Maine, where she was named the America East Conference Sixth Woman of the Year and on the All-Rookie Team.

SUMMONING SIMMONS In September, the Dukes added Machaela Simmons to the roster. The Alexandria, Va. native was a 6-A Occoquan Region Second-Team selection her senior season at Hayfield High School.

WELCOME, VÄLKOMMEN, MIRESEVINI, ДОБРЕДОЈДОВТЕ In November, Coach Burt announced the signing of Amaya Hamilton (USA), Precious Johnson (Sweden), Snezhe Serafimoska (Macedonia) and Bernada Rreshpja (Albania) to National Letters of Intent.

HOOP AT THE COOP On Oct. 23, Duquesne announced plans for a comprehensive renovation of the A.J. Palumbo Center. Set to break ground in March, the modernized and re-imagined facility will be named UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse in honor of men’s basketball legend and NBA trailblazer Chuck Cooper, who captained Duquesne University’s men’s basketball team before going on to become the first African-American to be drafted into the NBA in 1950.

The project will create a consolidated, total performance center as well as house a new game-day layout. Additionally, the renovation will add significant square footage to the building site and will positively impact every aspect of the student-athlete experience. Beyond Duquesne Athletics, the facility will serve as a center for community and campus engagement, events and activities.

The long-term strategic partnership between UPMC and Duquesne Uni-versity will develop and support mutually beneficial sports performance, sports medicine, employee health and productivity, fitness and nutrition,

health and wellness as well as related education and community engage-ment programs and services to sustain and advance the missions of both organizations. The partnership will focus on establishing an integrated platform of services and capabilities that will benefit Duquesne students, student athletes, employees and dependents.

In addition to private and corporate support, the University has been awarded a grant from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP). The RACP is a Commonwealth grant program administered by the Pennsylvania Office of the Budget that was developed for the acquisi-tion and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic and historical improvement projects.
