JUNGELSRShorthorn Farms
Welcome,
It seems like yesterday I was writing the intro letter for our first bull sale at the ranch. Hard to believe that was a year ago already. Feedercalves were worth a fraction of what they are today and the cost of feed was substantially higher. It has been a great year for not only ourfirm but for all involved in the cattle business. No doubt it was due, and, we look forward to the years ahead as it appears the cattle sectoris poised to be rewarded for our tireless efforts and stewardship.
Speaking of effort. The cows at JSF did a great job this past year of raising an exceptional set of bulls. You will note more weaningperformance in this set of bulls and I fully expect that to carry through to yearling weight. It is very rewarding to see the program evolve. As many know, we addressed birth weight before many in our breed chose to. Now, we are injecting more performance without increasingmature cow size and birth weight. Evidence of this is a set of bulls that is well below breed average on the whole for birth weight and ator above breed average for weaning weight, yearling weight, milk and maternal calving ease. The $Value British Maternal Index combinesall of these traits into one number that best exemplifies what SHORTHORN was set on this earth to do--make better mother cows. Whenevaluated in this manner, JSF spring born bulls rank in the top 10% of the breed and best describes what our bulls are. Balanced andfunctional.
Additionally, it speaks to what these bulls can offer the industry. As you read further in this catalog you will note we are the first Shorthornoperation to be courted by and become a member of Allied Genetic Resources. You will read much about them and their company in theforthcoming pages but know that one of best and brightest in the business, Allied CEO Marty Ropp, sees the potential in our program andin these cattle. Most importantly, I see the potential of what we can further provide you, the customer, in alignment with a network ofindividuals that is second to none, bringing more opportunity for the progenyfrom our genetics.
This stout, uniform set of bulls will be presented in their everyday clothes onsale day with a full set of current weights and ultrasound data to assist in yourevaluation. If you are able, we welcome you to come up ahead of the sale andtake the time to tour the feedlot as well as our wintering system for the cowherd.
I truly hope you are able to take time from your busy schedules and be withus on February 3. I am confident you will not find a thicker, easier fleshing, calmset of bulls anywhere.
Seeing is believing.
Sincerely,
Derek

Terms to be announced on or prior to sale date. Bulls come and go. Oftenwe don’t realize just how good they were until they are long since gone, little semen in the tank, and all we are left with is a set of daughters toremind us everyday of what we didn’t do but should have. That's what Ithink of when I look at this bulls pedigree. His sire, JSF Navigator T2 is asright for the times as any bull today and I am so thankful for the fact wefigured that out and were able to use him again at age 6. His ability to sireprogeny with performance and muscle while not adding a full frame sizeor birthweight is unique. His dam was the cow at K-Kim's that Kevin leastwanted to part with. At 11 years of age, 114P embodies functionalShorthorn cattle. His maternal grandsire, Revamp, walked here until hewas 12 years old. No one realized how good he was until he was 7 or 8.All of the aforementioned are proof of the prepotency, quality, and longevitythat is bred into one of the best bulls we've ever raised, JSF Compass186A. Set a new direction.

Yes, the Shorthorns have new EPDs....By Kris Ringwall, North Dakota State Universtiy Extension
Summer is an off time to discuss bull data. However, the American Shorthorn Association’s e-newsletter arrived last week with some good, nogreat news. In an article, the association says it has released the new "fall multi-breed EPD's" (expected progeny differences) compiled from thenew Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation.I immediately pulled up the Shorthorn website (http://www.shorthorn.org/) to see what was happening. In the article it says, “These EPDs were
calculated by the American Simmental Association as part of their multi-breed genetic evaluation. The entire set of EPDs are now on the same‘base’ as Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh and a growing number of other breeds.”This concept of data sharing or data comingling facilities efficient bull selection and adds a simpler tool to the commercial producer’s toolbox
for bull selection. I realize that there is and always will be a certain amount of competitiveness among the beef breeds.Anyone that has been involved in the beef industry will realize that the industry is segmented, so shuffling among those segments is one of the
challenges astute beef producers need to master. It may be unfortunate, but one would say such competition keeps the team sharp. To be on theteam, there is no room for error.Likewise, with the amount of effort and personal dedication that is needed to produce beef, certainly an individual beef producer has the right
to decide in what segment or segments he or she wants to participate. However, producers need to make an effort to understand the entire beefbusiness, not just the chosen segments. The breeds represent various segments of the beef industry and are very effective working units within the cow-calf segment of the industry. In
reality, the commercial cow-calf producer knits together the genetics of the beef herd and associated breeding programs that often supplementthe marketing aspects of what the producer chooses to sell.Again, this is an individual decision. Regardless of what segment a beef producer may wish to be affiliated with, all cow-calf segments need to
focus on producing calves that fit and ultimately serve the segments. These calves form the product and are marketed. Why the smile when the American Shorthorn Association released their new EPD’s? The Dickinson Research Extension Center utilizes several
breeds of bulls to produce a product that capitalizes on genetic selection and the benefits of crossbreeding. The center is utilizing Shorthorn genetics, along with Simmental, Red Angus and Gelbvieh. The center utilizes additional breeds, but this particular
news event allows the center to better understand how our Shorthorn bull fits with the other three breeds.Historically, the center does a quick check by evaluating EPDs for birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW), milk, marbling
(Marb) and rib-eye area (REA). Bulls that fit the center’s breeding objectives are selected and utilized.Using the older Shorthorn EPD values, bull x4190244 could not be evaluated very effectively, compared with the Simmental, Red Angus and
Gelbvieh genetics. The bull’s old values were minus 0.1 for BW, 16 for WW, 30 for YW, 1 for milk, 0.04 for Marb and 0.06 for REA. These values were valuable in
purchasing a Shorthorn bull, but left the center with questions on how the bull would do compared with other genetics that the center uses. The new EPD values for bull x4190244 are 1.3 for BW, 60 for WW, 76 for YW, 23 for milk, 0.16 for Marb and 0.07 for REA. The bull ranks in the
upper 30 percent or greater in all traits except REA. For REA value, the bull ranks in the upper 40 percent. However, now the center knows how the Shorthorn bulls fit in without having to spend time and money to wait out the long process of progeny
testing. The center’s typical Red Angus bulls have an EPD value for WW of 60, Simmental bulls 78, Gelbvieh bulls 62 and now the center’s Shorthorn
bulls have a WW of 60.One could list all the traits, but a quick look puts the center’s Red Angus and Simmental bulls with greater YW EPDs and the Shorthorn and
Gelbvieh bulls with greater milk EPDs.Data is important in the beef business, so a thank you is in order to the Shorthorn Association for its progressive data move. By expanding
effective data usage, commercial beef production benefits.May you find all your ear tags.
The following article ran early this fall on the Drovers Cattlenetwork as a part of Kris Ringwall’s Beef Talk series and was reprinted with hispermission. We thank want to thank Kris and the staff at the Dickinson Research Center for their use of Shorthorn bulls and confidence in ourprogram.

I am very proud of this bull. His pedigree reads like it's straight from thegreat performance herd in Loudonville, Ohio, Byland. Its very humbling toread it and see 2 of the best bulls we have ever raised included in it. Gaugeand Reload. Gauge needs no introduction. Reload was the top selling bullin Durhams for Denver 2008, returning here to breed cows this summer atthe age of 7. Thanks Dr. Jeff and Jon Byers. I love the traditional look of thisbull. I expect many people will come February 3.

Terms to be announced on or prior to sale date. Proud, Stand-Out, HerdSire and he knows it. I cannot count the mornings I've come out to feedand found this bull posing as I came to he and his mates pen. He has beena standout all his days and Joe's pick of the bulls since he was a week old.Hard to argue, he was showing off even then. It's rare to have a bull with a75 lbs., BW scare 700 lbs., at weaning time and all the while maintain theeye appeal and balance this bull has. Couple all of this with his great damwhose list of accomplishments include: Raising the first Shorthorn bull tobe purchased by Select Sires for nearly 3 decades, JSF Capiche 46U.Raising the top selling bull in Durhams for Denver 2012, JSF Limitless 87Y,and year-after-year, coming in early bred and looking like a lead cow should. It's no wonder he's cocky, he has to be. Suitable for heifers.

Regulator 118B has always been a standout in the younger bull pen andquickly rising to the forefront of the entire offering. It comes as no surpriseto me given his dam. JSF Adelaide 2R has done some pretty amazing thingstoo. Namely, and most recently, raising last years farm record $40,000 JSFHot Wire 70A to the premier program in the nation, Cates Farms, Modoc,IN with semen packages sold all over the country. This bull is soft made, incredibly sound, and fault free. Pay close attention to this bull. I have ahunch he could be heard from for many years to come. Suitable for heifers.

Here's another one. Far be it from me to tell people which one of thesewhite studs is better. 36B has a tick more performance but packs all thesame look and ability of his 3/4 brother. He and 20B make breeding cattlefun.

The boys named this one Hidalgo and it stuck. I can't say we've ever hadone this loud colored but given his dam's unique markings anything waspossible. We got anything...and although I wish he hadn't been quite ascolorful I will not apologize for his quality. He's an absolute standout calfwho's progeny will be purebred out of purebred cows. His dam brings in atop tier calf each and every year. For those Shorthorn enthusiasts that wantour genetics but get bored with red bulls...here's your guy.

This is a young outcross Plus bull wouldn't letus not put him on the sale. His quality isundeniable. If you have a set of solid red cowsthat need some additional shape and dimension while not sacrificing performance, this bull deserves a serious look. Conversely, if you are looking for a good Plus bullto campaign and later turn out, he could do that too.

I have always liked this bull. He is only son wegot last year out of the service sire to ourcommercial bred heifers, JSF Bar None 99Z. Heis proof of the calving ease, performance, and type 99Z transmits. His first calfpurebred Simmental dam represents fresh genetics as part of the Plus side of theequation at JSF. This much like lot 48, this bull can work a lot of ways.

Only one black Plus bull this year and he's agood one. Lots of performance and muscle inthis calf. Use him on your black cows, keep thecalves black, all the while adding performance and muscle as well as maternalheterosis in his daughters.

We are very excited at Allied Genetic Resources to have our first provider of high value Shorthorn genetics as an Allied owner andlook forward to working closely with the Jungels Family and their commercial customers. If you are not familiar with the Allied team,we are a genetics and service company built around some of the very best and highest reputation seedstock producers in the US. Asa multi-breed business that promotes the proven profits of heterosis every day, we too have been searching for Shorthorn geneticsproviders that truly are committed to the commercial cattle industry and have a plan to deliver the unique value traits inherent to theShorthorn breed to the larger beef business. After visiting with Derek and his family for nearly a year, they have made the commitmentto be part of our organization and in turn we accepted the charge to help with the service end of what they already do well. British breed cattle must deliver substantial maternal profitability and end product value. To be important contributors to commercial
cattle herds and crossbreeding systems these breeds need to generate efficient, moderate sized females with all of the disposition, udders, feet quality and fertility it takes to keep cow costs down and remain in the herd for many years. Shorthorn cattle came to thiscountry with so many of those pieces bred in and for those who chose to embrace those value traits, the flexibility they add to acrossbreeding program can be terrific. Elite, highly selected Shorthorns too are blessed with as much marbling as any other Britishoption and thus nearly ideally compliment Continental gene sources. That gives them a solid one, two punch for generating dollars. It doesn’t take long touring the Jungels’ pastures or searching the Shorthorn database to see that these folks made good strategicgenetic decisions long ago and stuck to them. You’ll find more proof of their direction in the Jungels’ signature Blue Roan femalesalong with the red and red baldy Shorthorn based commercial heifers they offer. It’s obvious they use all the tools available to themto create profit based opportunities both for their program and more importantly, their customer’s future. As committed a multi-breedshop, a large part of our business at Allied is with SimAngus genetics both red and black. Jungels’ genetics is a great way to takeadvantage of the added heterosis a third breed brings to the table as well as the breed complimentarity offered by Shorthorn geneticsof proven value.Great genetics are job 1, but the other half of the profit equation needs to be great service. That is where Allied comes in. By
representing the best group of people in the seedstock business it only stands to reason that we get the opportunity to work with thebest group of commercial customers as well. Reputation, logoed feeder calf and replacement marketing services, genetic systemsconsulting, industry representation and seedstock procurement options are a big part of our menu of services at Allied. We also helpproducers grow by promoting supply development initiatives, cooperative programs and our personal efforts to help build and retainloyalty business. Strategic relationships are a priority at Allied as well. Currently we maintain working partnerships with SuperiorLivestock, Zoetis, Select Sires, ORIgen, Loomix ADM Nutrition and Great Plains Consulting to help insure our clients have greateraccess to proven services, products and information that helps drive success. These reputation businesses help insure that Alliedfunctions at a high level in the beef business every day and keeps our focus firmly on commercial customer services. The Allied logo coupled with maximum information about genetics and process is one easy way to tie into Allied programs right
