During Great Lent Fasting: Orthodox Christians are called to ab- stain from all meat—(yes, chicken is meat!)— dairy products i.e. eggs, milk, etc., fish, wine and olive oil during Great Lent, which begins on February 23, Clean Monday ( ). To strengthen ourselves, the Church asks us to increase our prayer life (attending the Lenten Services), flee from sinful behavior, and to give alms. Let us together keep the fast as strictly as possible, increase our daily pray- ers, approach the Mystery of Holy Confession and forgive one another any offenses that have caused division or anger. If we are unsure about fasting or confession please see Fr. Den- nis. May God bless us; grant us strength and faith to complete the course of the fast. Liturgy of St. Basil the Great: During the Great Lenten period we use the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great every Sunday and on Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday mornings. Services: We are called to abstain from certain foods during the Great Fast as we are to ab- stain from sin. This cannot be achieved without an increased prayer life. The Church in Her wisdom has not only called for us to fast, but gives us more services that will aid us in our Lenten journey. The Great Compline will be offered every Monday evening, the Presancti- fied Liturgy every Wednesday evening and the Salutations to our Theotokos every Friday even- ing. Coffee Hour/Dinners During Lent: When bringing treats for the coffee hour during the Great Lenten Fast, please remember we must maintain the fasting practices of the Orthodox Church. While each may not be able to keep the fast as strictly as prescribed, let us nonethe- less, keep it when we gather as community and people of God. The Prayer of Saint Ephraim Lord and Master of my life, deliver me from the spirit of laziness and meddling, the lust for power and gossip. Rather, grant the spirit of wisdom, humility, paence, and love to me Your servant. Yes, Lord and King, grant that I may see my own faults and not judge my brother; for You Food for the Soul The closer one is to God in reality—and not simply in one’s imagination—the more one feels unworthy and sinful, more sinful than anyone else. The Holy Fathers felt this way. There are many examples of this. The publican considered himself a sinner for altogether other reasons. Nevertheless, he realized his sinful state and did not try to justify himself. He asked only for mercy and forgiveness of the Lord, and he received it. Everybody has an insolvent debt before God. No amount of ascetic struggles can repay this debt. The Lord Himself says: If you do all that is demanded of you (that is, follow all the com- mandments), consider yourselves unprofitable serv- ants whose duty it is to fulfill the master’s order (Luke 17:10). How necessary it is for us, who con- stantly break the commandments, to keep the same disposition of soul as the publican: not to look for virtues in ourselves. Regardless of any spiritual labors we might undertake, we shall always remain abominable slaves. Only by the mercy of God, those who repent are forgiven and are vouchsafed to en- ter the Kingdom of Heaven. Instead of “It is truly right…Axion Etin” In you rejoices all creation, O you who art full of grace, the hierarchy of the angels, and all mankind, O consecrated temple and paradise endowed with speech, glory of virginity, of whom god, who is our god before the ages, was incarnate and be-came a little child.

Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church Holy Communion of the Orthodox Church is the Holy Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is “With the fear of God, faith and love” that we ap-proach the Divine Mysteries. Therefore, Holy Communion is reserved only for those baptized and chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves by prayer and fasting, as pre-scribed by the teachings of the Holy Orthodox Church. We ask that women, before approaching to receive from the Holy Cup, in respect of our Lord, to please remove lipstick.

Church School Pascha Passport We are again offering this wonderful program for our community. Please read more about the Pascha Passports created by Fr. Evan Armatas at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Loveland, CO: http://www.stspyridons.org/lentenmaterials/paschapassport/. All the chil-dren will receive their own passport and we need a photo for each child so we can attach it to the passport. It would be great if the parents could bring a photo anywhere between 1x1 (inch) up to 2x2. Adults are encouraged to par-ticipate as well. Please see Bogdan Georgescu for more details.

Bookstore and Library Lent is upon us and there are many good books available that are food for the soul. If you are interested in purchasing parallel Greek/English Holy Week books for $25.00, they are located in the Church Bookstore or you can see Olga Son-nenburg.

Lenten Charity During this Lenten season, Archangel Michael Church is committed to helping children and families in Colorado. Each week following ser-vices, we will take a collection for the Tennyson Center for Children which is dedicated to helping children who have experienced severe abuse, neglect, and/or trauma so they can change their

life’s story. The Center employs Spiritually Inte-grated Therapy to help reintegrate the children back into safe families, schools, and communi-ties. This is a charity that we contributed to from our Festival profits last year and hope to support again this year. Please consider giving. https://www.tennysoncenter.org/

Car Pool We are starting a new program to offer rides to those who cannot attend services due to lack of transportation. We are asking for volunteers to help transport our faithful. Please contact Steph-anie Falko for more information at 719-238-7590 or email: [email protected]
