The Plant Hardiness Zones divide the United States and Canada into 11 areas based on a 10 degree Fahrenheit difference in the average annual minimum temperature. The United States falls within Zones 2 through 10.

Suggested hardiness zones have been indicated for all trees and perennials available online from the Foundation. If a range of zones, for example, zones 4-9 is indicated, the tree or perennial is known to be hardy in zones 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Suitable hardiness means a plant can be expected to grow in the zone’s temperature extremes, as determined by the lowest average annual temperature.

Keep in mind that local variations such as moisture, soil, winds and other conditions might affect the viability of individual plants.

Dutchman Tree Farms is a family owned and operated tree farm located in beautiful

Northwestern Michigan. Our knowledgeable workforce is dedicated to all aspects of growing trees and ensuring quality products and service to customers. We plan years in advance to maintain company operations, keep the tree cycle going and ensure overall customer satisfaction.

In the late 1990's we planted over 900 acres of spruce and pine for landscaping purposes. They are planted in a one-year rotation so we can maintain a consistent supply of quality trees. Although Michigan is known for sandy soil, all of our balled and burlap trees are planted in heavy clay-like soils to ensure a successful transplant.

We expanded our landscaping operation in the early 2000's to include our pot-in-pot nursery for a true container grown tree. Each tree is planted in a #3 and #5 container as a seedling, where it stays for two years. Trees are then up-potted to a #7 and #10 container where they grow for another two years. This ensures our trees are resistant to transplant shock. A “true” container grown tree is half the weight of field-dug trees that ship in containers, making shipping and handling easier.

High standards, quality service, products and expertise make us, Dutchman Tree Farms, a leader in the industry.

balled & burlap trees

Balled and burlap trees are grown in heavy, clay-like soils for guaranteed quality. The root ball is wrapped in burlap so it remains strong and intact during shipping, and safe from transplant shock.

White SpruceCarrying a cone-shaped crown and short needles, this tree can reach a height of 60 feet tall. This tree grows best along stream banks and lakeshores where there is moist, acidic and loamy soil.

Hardy Zones 2–6

Norway SpruceThe Norway Spruce is the fastest growing of the spruce family and makes a great windbreaker because of its strong branches. This tree can grow to 60 feet.

Hardy Zones 2–6

Serbian SpruceKnown as the most graceful of the spruce family, the thin arching branches and slender, straight trunk will add dimension to your landscaping project. The tree grows well in deep, moist, well-drained soil.

Hardy Zones 2–6

Colorado Blue SpruceThe Colorado Blue Spruce carries a full pyramidal shape with a cone-shaped crown and takes its name from its dull, blue-grey needles. The needles are longer on lower branches and shorter on upper branches. Also available: Colorado Blue-Green Spruce.

Hardy Zones 2–8

Black Hills SpruceThis tree is known for its darker green color and many layers with short, stiff, blue-green needles. It is darker and has foliage more dense than a White Spruce. This tree adapts well to the cold and grows well in many different soils.

Hardy Zones 2–6

White PineThe White Pine is often referred to as America’s loveliest pine. It grows well in a range of environments, but it grows best in full sun or partial shade. This tree grows quickly and reaches heights over 70 feet.
