DMS Geo Bee

Duxbury Middle School once again participated in the annual Geography Bee sponsored by National Geographic. Social Studies classes in Grades 6-8 held preliminary competitions, producing ten finalists: From Grade 6: Max Harrington, Sara Moffitt and Calvin Shepler.

From Grade 7: Charlie Coon, Callie Robbins and Charlie Stanwood. From Grade 8: James Lawlor, Connor Maichle, Charlie Rubin and Matt Szafran.

On January 30, these ten finalists squared off in the school-wide bee. After a very competitive

game, James Lawlor emerged as the winner, followed by Charlie Rubin and Matt Szafran.

James will complete a written exam to be submitted to National Geographic for eligibility in the state-level competition in March.

Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic

Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. With a top prize of a $50,000 college scholarship—plus other prizes—the contest is designed to encourage teachers

to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.

Congratulations to all of our finalists, and good luck to James in the next round!
