    Helping you into workStarting work for the first time, going backto work or changing jobs can be goodways of meeting new people, making newfriends and increasing your income.

    You have lots of options when you areready to work or change your workingpattern. If you havent worked for a while,you might want to spend some time gettingused to being back in a work environment.Or, you might want to find training to helpyou get the right job.Support and advice for youOne of the things you can do first is toget some advice from one of our personaladvisers, who can discuss your situation

    and goals with you, and help you work outwhats right for you, and for your children.

    If you are having money worries, ouradvisers can check youre getting all thebenefits youre entitled to and put you intouch with other organisations that canhelp. They can also help you find childcare,or put you in touch with nurseries and play-schemes.If you are bringing up children on your ownand claiming benefits, we can invite you toattend an event where we can share ideaswith you about going back to workincluding childcare. If you are ready forwork, we may be able to introduce you toemployers with vacancies suitable for you.

    If you are a lone parent enteringemployment after getting benefits, supportis available to you in the first 6 months ofstarting work.Work to suit your needs

    Youdonthavetoworkfull-time.Otheroptions might suit you better when youhave a child to care for.

    Your personal adviser will do a Better off inwork calculation with you. They will start byconfirming what benefits youre currentlygetting and adding up your weekly income.

    Then they will look at the amount you couldbe earning in a job youre interested in andthe benefits you could still get, such asHousing Benefit. This will help you decide if

    Help with finding a jobNew DealNew Deal aims to help you get a job if youare out of work. It will give you the chanceto train, learn and do work experience sothat you:get more confidentget new skillscan be worth more to people looking for

    staff, andcan find and stay in workNew Deal for lone parentsNew Deal for lone parents is a voluntaryprogramme for people who are bringing upchildren on their own and are interested inworking. If youre not working or workingless than 16 hours a week, you may beable to join New Deal for lone parents.New Deal for partnersIf your partner is claiming benefit for youand you work less than 24 hours a week,you may be able to join New Deal for

    partners and get a whole range of help. Itis voluntary, so you can choose whether ornot you want to take part.When you join New Deal for lone parents orNew Deal for partners, your personaladviser will work with you to find a job thatsuits you and your situation. You may also

    Helping you apply for jobs

    A personal adviser can help you compile aCV or there are lots of books which offerpractical advice on writing your CV, filling inapplication forms and how to do well ininterviews. Visit www.direct.gov.ukfor otheruseful tips.WhenyoureputtingtogetheryourCV(whichsetsoutyoureducation,jobqualificationsandworkbackground),youmaywanttoincludetheskillsyouvegainedwhilelookingafteryourchildren.Skillslikeorganisation,administration,managingyourtimeand

    jugglingprioritiesareusefulinmostjobs,andmanyemployerswillbeinterestedinyourlifeexperienceaswellasinthejobsyoumayhave

    done

    in

    the

    past.

    You may be able to get free help with jobapplications at one of our programmecentres. Many offer learning and trainingpackages to improve your interview skillsand phone techniques, and to developyour experience in how to research, applyfor and get a job. To find out whether

    theres a centre near you and whether youare eligible to use its services, contact apersonal adviser.Getting a taste of work

    Work trial is a programme that gives youthe chance to try out a job with anemployer for a short time. Youll carry ongetting your benefits while youre on thetrial, so its a risk-free way of finding out if a

    job is right for you. If you are taking part inNew Deal for lone parents or New Deal forpartners, you may be able to get a trainingpremium and help with childcare costswhile youre on the work trial.If you are offered a job at the end of yourwork trial and you accept it, this does notmean that all financial help will end, as youmay be eligible for some benefits and taxcredits while you are working.

    Your working rightsRight to flexible workingIfyouhaveachildwhoisunder6(oradisabledchildwhoisunder18yearsold),youmayhavetherighttoaskyouremployerto

    consider

    the

    option

    of

    flexible

    working

    or

    workingpart-time.

    Youhavethisrightifyouhavebeenworkingforyouremployerforatleast26weeksinarowatthetimethatyouaskforflexibleworking.Youonlyhavetherighttoapplyonceevery12months.Therightcoversbothmothersandfathers.If you do not have a child under 6 (or adisabled child under 18), you can still askyour employer for flexible working hours.

    They do not have to consider your request,but many employers support flexibleworking to keep good staff.

    If you have the right to ask for flexibleworking, your employer must consider yourrequest seriously. However, they can turnyour request down on business grounds orthey can suggest another flexible or part-time option which works better for them.

    You need to bear in mind that, if youremployer agrees to your request, this willpermanently change your contract ofemployment.

    This is a one-off payment and you do nothave to pay tax on it. You could get 250 ifyou are a lone parent or part of a couplewith children.IfyouhavebeenclaimingIncomeSupportyoumaybeabletogethelptowardspayingfortheinterestonyourmortgage.Thiscanbepaidforthefirst28daysafteryouoryourpartnerstartfull-timework.Jobgrantsandhelptowardsyourmortgageinterestarepaidautomaticallyyoudonothavetoclaimthem.Youmusttellusassoonasyougetajob.

    Once youre in work, you may find thatyou qualify for Working Tax Credit, whichcould help you to hold on to more of yourearnings and pay for childcare. We tell youmore about this on page 16 of this leaflet.In Work CreditIn Work Credit is a fixed tax-free payment,payable for up to 52 weeks on top of yourearnings. It may be paid weekly to parents,who have a dependant child living in thehousehold, have been getting certainbenefits continually for 52 weeks and whostart work of at least 16 hours a week.If you are a parent and your partner isreceiving Jobseekers Allowance or IncomeSupport, In Work Credit may be payable ifyou start work of at least 24 hours a weekand as a result your partners claim forbenefit ends.Contact us for more information on In WorkCredit and to see if you can claim it.     Training for the futureEverybody has skills that they can bring toa job. But if its been a while since youworked, or if youve been in the same jobor type of work for some time, you mightbe worried that your skills are out of date.

    Training can help you to:

    develop your skills develop new skills, and get useful qualifications.

    All of these will increase the range of jobsyou can apply for. Some employers alsogive training after you start work.We can help you decide what sort oftraining is best for you, and tell you abouthelp with course fees, transport costs orthe cost of looking after your children whileyoure training. If you are taking part in NewDeal for lone parents or New Deal forpartners you might also receive a weeklytraining allowance.

    What sort of training can I do?There is training available out there to suitevery need. For example, you might needhelp to improve your basic skills (reading,writing, maths or English language).

    Financial and practical supportSometimes, it can be difficult making endsmeet, and you may need extra financialhelp. You may need to claim benefits or taxcredits to help you support yourself andyour family, or help pay your rent ormortgage. You may also be able to get helpwith health costs, or with childcare.Work focused interviews

    You may be asked to attend a workfocused interview where an adviser will tellyou about the complete package ofsupport that is available to help parents intowork. If you receive an appointment for awork focused interview, you must attendwhen asked to do so or any claim forbenefit that you make may be affected.Jobseekers AllowanceJobseekers Allowance is the main benefitfor people who are out of work. If you areeligible, it is paid when you dont have a joband you are looking for work.

    Thereare2typesofJobseekersAllowance.The first is based on how much National

    Insurance you have paid in the last 2 taxyears. We can pay you this for up to 182days. It is called contribution-basedJobseekers Allowance.

    The other is based on your income andsavings. This is called income-basedJobseekers Allowance.

    To get Jobseekers Allowance you must beactively looking for work and meet anumber of conditions.We have a leaflet which gives you moreinformation about Jobseekers Allowance.

    Working Tax Credit and Child Tax CreditTaxcreditsaretheretohelppeoplewhoworkbutareonalowincome,andtohelpparentsonalowincometomakeendsmeet.WorkingTaxCreditistheretohelpyouifyouworkandareonalowincome.Theamountyougetdependsonanumberofthings,suchasyouryearlyincomeandthenumberofhoursyouwork.Working Tax Creditcan include help withpaying for childcare. You could get back upto 80% of your eligible childcare costs, upto a weekly limit.Child Tax Creditcan help you if you areresponsible for a child or young person.Whether you can get it and the amount you

    might get depend on a number of things,such as your household income and thenumber of children you have.Child BenefitChild Benefit is paid to the personresponsible for looking after a child. It is

    not affected by your income, NationalInsurance contributions or savings.You can receive it until your child reaches16, and perhaps for longer if they are infull-time further education.

    The rate of Child Benefit is reviewed everyyear and HM Revenue & Customs publishthe new rates.

    Work and childcareIf youre starting work or training, you mayneed to think about who will look after yourchildren.

    You may find that formal childcare isnt asexpensive as you thought. Many peoplecan receive help with the costs through thechildcare element of Working Tax Credit.

    Your local Families Information Service(formerly called the Childrens InformationService) can tell you about local childcare,early education and other care and supportservices for children and parents.
