2 - The Upper Hunter Entertainer - September 29 to October 5, 2012

The Toughest Sport on Dirt Hits Scone!Sean Constable, Manager Economic Development & Tourism, Upper Hunter Shire is proud to announce the upcoming PBR Touring Pro event at White Park on Saturday 13 October.Council was approached by PBR General Manager Glen Young, seeking support to hold a professional bull riding event in Scone which has led to the inaugural event this October, and following considerable investment at White Park this bull riding spectacular will show off the most modern equipment in Australia.

“We want to make this an annual event that will grow in popularity.” stated Sean.

“Scone has always been on our radar, and we are keen to establish this as one of our key signature events for years to come.” advised PBR General Manager, Glen Young.

“We already have established events in other major capital cities and towns so it made sense to include Scone as part of our international pathway to the multi-million dollar PBR World Finals in Las Vegas in late October.”

“Our organisation is the only one of its kind in this country that allows riders to compete on our tour with all points and money they win counting towards a legitimate international pathway that includes USA, Canada, Brazil and Mexico. The stand-alone sport of professional bull riding is still relatively young in Australia but we are experiencing a huge growth in attendances and media interest like all the other countries.”says Young.

With over $6,000 up for grabs in Scone, this particular event is one of the qualifying events for riders to earn one of the fourteen Australian spots available for the International Cup Series Events taking place in November at the Wollongong Invitational, Troy Dunn Invitational and Tamworth Invitational.

On Saturday 13 October, forty of Australia’s most accomplished bull riders representing NSW, QLD, VIC and the NT will converge on Scone’s White Park Rodeo Complex for what is shaping up to be one of the most gruelling and anticipated regional events of the year. With so much on the line every bull will be tested, and with the way the PBR competition format is structured, it is going to come down to the last bull on the last night before the event champion will be decided.

This is going to be one event you do not want to miss!

September 29 to October 5, 2012 - The Upper Hunter Entertainer - 3

The place was Thornthwaite, a property fi rst settled by Joseph Docker in the 1830’s. Joseph was a skilled graphic artist and his pen and ink and watercolours display a fi ne eye for detail. He was also a surgeon and qualifi ed as an apothecary (chemist) who was familiar with scientifi c method and chemicals of the day.

Experimentation with photography during the 1840’s by Louis Daguerre and Fox Talbot captured the imagination of Joseph Docker. Images of people and places produced by chemical processes that previously would have taken many hours of drawing opened up a new dimension. Joseph photographed many images of his property – peaceful creek scenes, the vineyard, seasonal activities with sheep and family members. The Docker family were keen cricketers and one day Joseph decided to capture an image of his sons playing a match. The backdrop for the photo is the Thornthwaite homestead, one of the fi nest sandstone residences in the Hunter Valley.

Many of Joseph’s prints taken between

1850 and 1870 remain in very good condition. An exhibition of these photographs will be held at the Scone Historical Museum during October. Come and join us for the opening of this exhibition on Sunday 7th October at 11am.

The Mitchell Library of New South Wales has dated the cricket photograph circa 1855 due to the method of using a paper negative coated with silver salts. Joseph was assisted by his son Earnest who also had a keen interest in photography. The following quote by Peter Docker, great grandson of Joseph and also a photographer is as follows –

“What was remarkable about the photographic achievements of Joseph and Earnest and their consequent recognition among pioneers of photography was: • The excellence of their work as a father and son photographers from 1850. • The extraordinary diffi culties under which they worked in a remote part of the colony of NSW from 1850

to 1870. • Their ingenuity and perseverance with photographic experimentation, building their own equipment and making and processing all their photographic materials without the ease of communication with other workers in the fi eld. • The enduring quality of their photographs, many which survive today. • The time they were able to devote to their hobby in spite of Joseph’s commitments to his property, his local community and to politics.”

Everyone is invited to the re- enactment of the fi rst photograph of a social cricket match to be held at Thornthwaite, 6 October at 11am. There will be signs with direction to the property from Scone on the day.

Experience Big Band Jazz with The Dilworths in SconeThe Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music (UHCM) is very pleased to bring The Dilworths back to the Upper Hunter on Thursday 27 September, as part of its 2012 Visiting Artists Series program. The Dilworths is the brainchild of emerging Sydney trumpeter/composer Eamon Dilworth and has evolved into one of Australia’s freshest, young jazz groups. All members of the band have individually performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House, so their visit to Scone offers a wonderful opportunity for local jazz musicians and the broader community to easily access and experience their exceptional talent.

The music of the Dilworths offers the perfect balance of modern jazz infl uences, lending from American and European traditions while embracing the raw earthiness of their Australian roots.

The Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music had the pleasure of bringing the Dilworths to Muswellbrook earlier in the year, with a focus on improvisation. This time they will facilitate a workshop with students with an emphasis on Big Band music and perform in Scone following the workshop.

The Dilworths concert will be held at Scone High School hall on Thursday 27 September at 7:30pm. Tickets are now available and are just $20 for adults and $15 for concessions. Book your tickets now by calling the UHCM offi ce on 6541 4888.

Early Childhood Music encourages and assists with the development of good listening and comprehension skills, and enhanced concentration in the formative years of childhood.

Photo Competition for Blokes“Celebrate, Connect, Grow” is the theme for the photo competition for blokes being run by the Scone Neighbourhood Centre in October. We would like your photos to feature how you, as a male, celebrate the positive things in your life, how you connect with others doing things that make you feel good or how you grow by trying new and different things.

Bernie Rischke, project offi cer for the Neighbourhood Centre said, “Males provide a strong infl uence in many positive ways to each other, their families and the wider community. We often take this for granted and overlook the things that are important to men. We want to give males a chance to share those things through photographs and look forward to receiving many entries.”

An open day to exhibit the photographs will be held at the Scone Neighbourhood Centre on Saturday, 20 October from 9:00 am to 12:00pm followed by a presentation and light lunch. Everyone is welcome to attend the open day, and those planning to stay for the presentation and lunch will need to let the Neighbourhood Centre know by 17 October.

Entry forms for the competition are available from the Scone Neighbourhood Centre. Entries close on Friday, 12 October.

For more information, contact Bernie Rischke on 6545 2562.

Whilst the number of entries in this year’s Scone Photographic Competition were down slightly from last year, judge David White said the quality of entries was exceptional.“People are increasingly benefi ting from high powered cameras with excellent resolution.” said David.

“There were some real quality in the entries and it was certainly a hard job picking a winner.”

David awarded fi rst place in the Travel Division to Paul Boniface’s ‘Refl ection’.

“The tonal quality and depth of the image was excellent. The colour saturation was beautiful as was the presentation.” said David.

Other winners in the Travel section were: 2nd ‘Sunrise’ (Anna Gipps) and 3rd ‘Too Much To See’ (Willy Hyland). Novice winners were

Willy Hyland (‘Too Much to See’), Amanda Archibald (‘Beyond the Blue’) and Sinead Scott (‘Where To Now?’).

In the Horse section, Katrina Partridge’s portrait of thoroughbred stallion Arlington was the division

winner. Katrina also collected third prize for her photo of a mare and newborn foal titled ‘So very shy’. Rhonda Thwaite secured second prize for her image titled ‘Horse Talk’.

The photographs have been on display at the Scone Arts and Crafts Centre.

Sponsors for this year’s competition were Pharmasave Scone Chemist and Scone Instant Images.

Trade Flourishes At Scone Homegrown + Handmade MarketStory and photos by Katrina Partridge

Sunny skies welcomed bumper crowds at Scone’s recent Homegrown + Handmade Market.A variety of new stallholders showcased their wares and extended trading hours assisted in stallholders recording strong sales for the day.

“The Spring market introduced a Spring Handmade Creations Fashion Parade with all items on the catwalk available for sale at the markets,” reports Amelia. “It was great to see this select showcase of the design talent from our region. Thank you to the Scone Grammar School for loaning the stage and to our keen junior models. Parade organiser Wendy Bennett and compere Mary Spora did a fabulous job and we certainly appreciated their involvement.”

“Don’t forget to get in early and order your Christmas Hampers from Meredith Bowman at Upper Hunter Hampers!” advises Amelia.

“The Spring market had a more balanced market with the offerings for sale however we are still keen to see more locally grown produce and boys attire and toys for the next quarterly market,” commented Amelia.

The Christmas Market scheduled for Saturday 15 December is already shaping as a huge affair and promises Christmas shoppers an ideal opportunity to fi ll their baskets.

“The Scone Homegrown + Handmade market would not be possible without the efforts of John, Taka and the staff of Kerv Cafe as well as the EVENT storeroom Market staff: Dannielle, Kylie, Emily + Fiona - we certainly look forward to working with them again in December,” said Amelia.

For information regarding the December market or to book a stall please contact Amelia Wilkinson on 0400 099 761 or [email protected]. You can also fi nd the Scone Homegrown + Handmade Market on Facebook.

New Mayor for Upper Hunter ShireBy Katrina Partridge

Nine councillors were elected to the Upper Hunter Shire Council at the recent local government elections and at an extraordinary Council Meeting on Monday evening, three put forward their names for the role of Mayor.Michael Johnsen, who has just completed a four year term on the previous Council, was elected Mayor by his fellow Councillors. The Director of Johnsen Walker Financial Services thanked former Mayor Lee Watts for the signifi cant contribution she had made to the wellbeing of the Shire. “The people have spoken. There are nine councillors with a great variety of skills, personal history and experiences. We have been given a huge opportunity by the people of this Shire to make a difference and that is what we will work towards achieving.” said Mayor Cr Johnsen.

At the recent local government election Cr Watts received more than thirty per cent of the fi rst preference votes, a substantial rise after a term as mayor from the ten per cent she received at the last election in 2008.

Cr Johnsen received almost sixteen per cent of the vote, a rise from twelve per cent in 2008.

Cr Bishop received about seven per cent to be elected to the Upper Hunter Shire Council for the fi rst time. He previously served on the Merriwa Shire Council for nine years.

There are a number of new faces amongst the nine Upper Hunter Shire Council Councillors: Peter Bishop, Ron Campbell, Maurice Collison, Wayne Bedggood and Kiwa Fisher.

Spring into Spring with Aberdeen NurseryWell spring is well and truly here! What a better way to get over those winter blues, than to spend some time rejuvenating your garden.

Now is the time for planting all your annuals, perennials, new season roses and trees.

Here are a few tips to make your gardening easier:

• Water your garden well, to make the task of weeding easier

• Mulch garden to keep the moisture in and the weeds down

• Sandy soils need plenty of organic matter, such as cow or horse manure.

• Powdery mildew, black spot and rust are all fungal diseases that can affect roses at this time of year. Spray with fungicide, using a combined insecticide and fungicide mixture to save time and money. This will also assist with the common pest problem of aphids attacking the new growth on roses.

Thoroughbred Hotel Explodes with the Sound of Metal!

By Cheri Gibson

When bands recently took to the stage performing both covers and originals at Scone’s Thoroughbred Hotel’s premier event - BANGOVER, it was a scene that had patrons literally screaming for more. The domination of metal and hardcore music in every shape and form performed by a series of bands aka Bangover is fastly becoming an event in the Hunter not to be missed.

Bands from Muswellbrook, Newcastle and Sydney including ‘Texaw’, ‘The World in Cinematic’, ‘Balescream’ and headliner ‘Evocatus’ garnered their fair share of attention performing with uncanny ability to grab the audiences with their powerful music and turn the crowd into a headbanging army.

A celebration of spring events in the Upper Hunter

Spokesperson Eni McInness is thrilled with the Bangover series.

“The number of people attending is increasing with each gig. To date, well over several hundred people have attended since we initially launched the first Bangover in June.” reports Eni.

“It is becoming so popular, and plans are already underway for the next Bangover.”

“Audiences would normally have to commute to Newcastle or Sydney to see an event like this.”

You don’t have to look hard or far to find great entertainment – so for all of those metal fans out there set aside Saturday 3 November when the Thoroughbred Hotel promises another great event.
