MLS GAME INFORMATION

HOUSTON DYNAMO vs CHICAGO FIRE ROBERTSON STADIUM, Houston, Texas 3 p.m. CT (Telefutura; KHOU) October 1, 2011 (WEEK 29; MLS Game 278)

Two of the hotter teams in Major League Soccer meet at Robertson Stadium on Saturday afternoon when the Houston Dynamo take on the Chicago Fire. The Dynamo have moved to the top of the Eastern Conference in recent weeks, coming off a huge 1-0 victory at FC Dallas last weekend. The Fire won for the fifth time in six games at midweek, a stunning 3-0 win at Real Salt Lake that keeps them firmly in the playoff hunt. REFEREE: Edvin Jurisevic. In their first meeting this season April 23 at Toyota Park, Houston’s Bobby Boswell scored in the 83rd minute, canceling out Diego Chaves’ early opener, as the teams ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Fire’s 2-0 win last April 24 at Toyota Park was their first against the Dynamo since the 2007 campaign. The Dynamo had won five games in a row vs. Chicago.

The Dynamo have won the last three meetings between the teams at Robertson Stadium. Coaches record: Dominic Kinnear v CHI: P16 W7 L5 D4 … Frank Klopas vs. HOU: first game

LAST MEETING (MLS) 4/23: CHI 1, HOU 1 (Chaves 18 – Boswell 83)

The Fire took the lead with an opportunistic goal in the 18th minute. Marco Pappa's dribbling run was finally stopped just outside the box, but Diego Cháves beat Houston defender Corey Ashe to the loose ball, turning and sprinting into the right side of the area before blasting a 10-yard shot into the top left corner.

But the Dynamo were able to snatch the equalizer seven minutes from the end. Center back Bobby Boswell rose above Fire defender Yamith Cuesta to head home a Brad Davis corner kick to extend Houston’s unbeaten streak and Chicago’s winless streak.

CHICAGO FIRE (4-1-4-1): Jon Conway – Jalil Anibaba (Dasan Robinson 76), Josip Mikulic, Yamith Cuesta, Gonzalo Segares - Logan Pause - Marco Pappa, Diego Chaves, Baggio Husidic (Michael Videira 65), Patrick Nyarko - Dominic Oduro (Gaston Puerari 82)

HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-4-2): Tally Hall - Hunter Freeman (Je-Vaughn Watson 78), Bobby Boswell, Andre Hainault, Corey Ashe - Danny Cruz (Colin Clark 67), Lovel Palmer, Geoff Cameron, Brad Davis - Cam Weaver, Will Bruin (Jason Garey 88).

HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo extended their unbeaten streak to three games and won for the first time this season away from home, a 1-0 win over FC Dallas on Saturday afternoon at Pizza Hut Park. The Dynamo have 42 points from 31 games on the season, taking over the top spot in the Eastern Conference to start the week. LAST MATCH

The only goal of the game came three minutes from full time. Brad Davis flighted in a corner kick from the left and Geoff Cameron steamed in to power home a header and give the Dynamo the full points.

Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made two changes to the team that came back for a 2-1 win against the San Jose Earthquakes at Robertson Stadium. Danny Cruz came back into the midfield for Colin Clark, and Brian Ching started up top for Carlo Costly.

HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-1-4-1): Tally Hall - Andre Hainault, Geoff Cameron, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe - Adam Moffat - Danny Cruz (Je-Vaughn Watson 58), Luiz Camargo, Brad Davis - Calen Carr (Colin Clark 64) - Brian Ching (Carlo Costly 78).

TEAM NEWS The win was the first away from home all season for the Dynamo. That leaves only Vancouver Whitecaps FC

without a road victory in MLS this year. “We know and people keep talking about it,” head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “[I am] happy for the guys.

They are sick and tired that we haven't won on the road. … We’ve played some games on the road where we've completely dominated and come away with one point or nothing. To come away with three is a great feeling to have in the locker room."

For the 10th time this season, and the sixth time in the last nine games, the Dynamo scored a goal in the 79th minute or later to get a result.

“[The late] success just means we’re playing until the last whistle,” striker Brian Ching. “It shows the mentality of our team and the fact that we’re coming out and seeing games through.”

The Dynamo have scored 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of games, leading MLS by one ahead of Seattle Sounders FC.

“It’s not just a confidence of, ‘Oh we’re going to score late here,’ but it’s a mentality to keep going and keep pushing to have that ability to score,” midfielder Brad Davis said. “To win a championship, you have to have that and play until the final whistle, and that’s what we try to do.”

Although he’s moved to central defense in recent weeks, Geoff Cameron scored his fifth goal of the season, tying him for the Houston club lead with Brian Ching.

“I think we’re dangerous on set pieces, and we have a lot of guys who can be dangerous with Brad [Davis] serving the ball in,” Kinnear said. “Bobby [Boswell] has four and Geoff [Cameron] has five, some of which are from set pieces, so you have that. Then in the run of play, we get our wide guys involved and get service into the box. When we do that, we’re a dangerous team.”

Davis moved into a tie atop the MLS assist standings with his 14th of the campaign, equal for the league lead with the LA Galaxy’s David Beckham.

“On this team, it’s not about one guy, it’s about all the plays that everyone’s making over the course of 90 minutes,” Davis said. “We have a bunch of different guys stepping up in different ways, and that helps spread things around.”

The shutout was the first for the Dynamo since July 9, a span of 12 games, and the fifth of the season for the club.

“Anytime you get a shutout, it puts you in a good position to win a game,” Kinnear said. “We got a little bit of luck at times, and they had a few near-misses, but we just kept our heads down and held on, and it worked out, and we scored a goal late.”

After Sporting Kansas City’s midweek win against Columbus, the Dynamo find themselves in second place in the Eastern Conference, two points back. All three teams at the top – including third-place Columbus, with 41 points – have three games remaining; fourth-place Philadelphia (with 40 points before their Thursday game vs. D.C. United), will have three games remaining beginning this weekend.

“We've got three games left now, two home and one away, so maybe [the Dallas win] will start some momentum for the rest of the season and into the playoffs,” Cameron said. “That's our main goal: to finish off the season strong, get into the playoffs, and make a run for it."

CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire extended their winning streak in impressive fashion, rolling to a dominant 3-0 win against a 10-man Real Salt Lake on Wednesday evening at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Fire have 36 points from 30 matches on the year, sitting in seventh place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH

Chicago opened the scoring in the ninth minute. Patrick Nyarko and Daniel Paladini combined on the left side of the penalty area before the ball went to Pappa in the heart of the area for a shot that beat RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

Two minutes later, the home side when down a man when Kyle Beckerman appeared to head-butt Paladini, who had given him a nudge from behind just moments prior, and Beckerman was sent off by referee Baldomero Toledo.

The Fire took advantage in the 39th minute. After slipping through an attempted tackle in the area, Pappa was able to pick out his target on the left side of the goal and scored his second on the night.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

The Fire and Pappa completed their night in the 75th minute from the right wing. The Guatemalan international got free on the right flank and cut into the area, lifting an angled shot past Rimando inside the far post to complete his hat trick.

Fire interim head coach Frank Klopas made two changes to the team that claimed a 3-2 win over the New England Revolution at Toyota Park. Cory Gibbs came into central defense for Jalil Anibaba, and Daniel Paladini replaced the injured Sebastian Grazzini in midfield.

CHICAGO FIRE (4-4-2): Sean Johnson - Dan Gargan (Michael Videira 78), Josip Mikulic (Jalil Anibaba 70), Cory Gibbs, Gonzalo Segares - Logan Pause, Pavel Pardo, Daniel Paladini, Marco Pappa - Patrick Nyarko (Corben Bone 81), Dominic Oduro.

TEAM NEWS The win continued a remarkable late-season run of form for the Fire. It’s their first three-game winning streak in

league play since May 16-28, 2009, and they’ve won five of their last six after winning just twice in the first 24 league games of the season.

The Fire also won for just the second time this season on the road, the first since a 2-1 win at Columbus on June 12.

“It was a great win against a very good team in a very difficult place. They don’t drop a lot of games at home. I was very happy with the performance of the guys, not just that we won, but tactically as well,” said Fire coach head coach Frank Klopas.

With the three consecutive victories, the Fire now find themselves just three points behind the New York Red Bulls for 10th place overall and the final wild card spot, with four games left to play.

“We’re talking in the locker with our teammates that each game is a playoff for us right now. We’re still alive and we need to get points, and we know the next game is going to be hard in Houston,” said Marco Pappa.

Pappa scored his first career MLS hat trick and just his second game with multiple goals since coming to the league midway through the 2008 season, also scoring two goals vs. Colorado on June 9, 2010.

“When we started, (Pappa) was playing as a left midfielder, then we switched formations and played more of a 4-2-3-1 and he was in front of Pavel (Pardo) and (Daniel) Paladini. With Dominic (Oduro) I kept telling him to think in terms of depth when we had the ball, so he was able to constantly sprint at the depth and create some gaps in between their midfield and their back line, where I thought that Marco would find the space and get the ball,” said Klopas. “He has the ability one-on-one to beat players, but his finishing was clinical tonight.”

The Fire have now scored three goals in each of their last three games, after scoring their season-high three once in the first 27 league contests – that coming in Week 2, a 3-2 win against Sporting Kansas City on March 26.

“This is a team, and when you have a good player it’s good for the player to play well like Marco (Pappa), and sometimes they decide the match,” said Klopas. “Sometimes it’s Marco, sometimes (Sebastian) Grazzini, sometimes Dominic (Oduro), so now I think we’re playing better and better, which is good for the team.”

With the U.S. Open Cup final ahead on Tuesday night at Seattle, Klopas indicated there could be significant changes in his team for the trip to Houston.

“You have to. Wednesday is a game where I think that most of the guys that played [against New England], unless there are more injuries, can play ... but I think the Houston game on Saturday is going to be very difficult,” Klopas said. “[It’s impossible] for guys to play on Wednesday, play on Saturday for 90 minutes in the heat and then recover in time for Tuesday. We’re going to have to make changes.”

Sebastian Grazzini missed the RSL game with a hamstring strain, and the club will await results of an MRI examination to see if he can play in the Houston game, or wait for the Open Cup final.

Houston Dynamo vs. Chicago Fire Saturday, 1 October 2011 – 3 p.m. CT

MLS regular season Robertson Stadium, Houston TX

DYNAMO VS. CHICAGO FIRE The Dynamo will play their second-to-last regular season home game at Robertson Stadium on Saturday, hosting the Chicago Fire in the only afternoon match of the season in Houston. The teams played to a 1-1 tie earlier in the season and were also involved in a trade that sent Dominic Oduro to Chicago and brought Calen Carr to Houston.

DYNAMO NOTES Houston leads the all-time series between the teams 6-3-2 and is 6-1-1 in their last eight meetings. The

last three matchups at Robertson Stadium have produced one-goal Houston victories by progressively increasing scorelines (2-1 in 2008, 3-2 in 2009, 4-3 in 2010).

The Dynamo’s 87th-minute goal last Saturday was the 10th time this season Houston has scored in the final 11 minutes to win or tie a game, including six of the last nine. The goal was Geoff Cameron’s fifth of the season, tying his career high in all competitions set in 2009 and tying him for the team lead.

Midfielder Brad Davis is one of the leading candidates for Major League Soccer’s MVP award, thanks in-part to his 14 assists, tied for the league lead. In addition to the assists, however, Davis leads the league by a wide margin in chances created, according to MLS stats partner Opta. While starting all 31 games, Davis has created 104 chances, 41 more than second-place Mauro Rosales of Seattle. Davis’ deadly set-piece delivery is part of the equation, as 55 of the 104 chances have come from free kicks, but Davis still leads the league with 49 chances created from open play. He has been involved in six of the Dynamo’s 10 late tying or winning goals this year.

Brazilian midfielder Luiz Camargo has started the last three MLS games for the Dynamo, and the team has posted a 2-0-1 record in those contests. The insertion of Camargo has allowed Geoff Cameron to shift to center back and has, for the last two games, pushed Andre Hainault to right back. The Dynamo have allowed just one goal from open play in three games with Camargo in midfield.

Goalkeeper Tally Hall made four saves in the win against Dallas to post his first shutout since July 9 and his fifth of the season. Hall is tied for fourth in MLS with 10 wins on the season. In all competitions, Hall has posted 10 career shutouts and is likely to make his 50th start for the Dynamo on Saturday.

Houston has scored first in 11 out of 31 games on the season; the Dynamo are 7-1-3 when notching the first goal and 3-8-7 when the opponent scores first; there have been two 0-0 ties. Houston’s 10 results when allowing the first goal are the most in MLS; the Dynamo’s winning percentage when allowing the first goal (.361) ranks third.

SPREADING THE WEALTH

The Dynamo have gotten goals from 15 different players in 2011 out of a total of 25 field players who have taken the field in an MLS game. Houston has six players with at least four goals, including co-scoring leaders Geoff Cameron, Brian Ching, and Will Bruin with five goals each and Bobby Boswell, Brad Davis, and Cam Weaver with four goals apiece.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

The Dynamo have scored 21 of their 39 goals (53.8%) in the final 15 minutes of a half, portions of the game that combine to make up 30 percent of a match. Houston has scored 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of games, most in MLS.

RE-WRITING THE RECORD BOOKS

Brad Davis is playing his way to the top of the Dynamo record books. Davis is the all-time club leader in games played in all competitions (194) and MLS (156); games started in all competitions (176) and MLS (142); and assists in all competitions (69) and MLS (60). Davis also ranks second in team history in minutes played and third in goals in all competitions (22) and MLS goals (20).

ALWAYS THERE Goalkeeper Tally Hall is the only Houston player to contest all 2,790 minutes of the MLS regular season so far. Hall and midfielder Brad Davis are the only players to start each MLS game.

UP NEXT: FIRST TRIP TO PORTLAND After breaking with most of Major League Soccer for an international fixture date next week, the Dynamo will return to action on Friday, October 14, with their first trip to JELD-WEN Field to take on the Portland Timbers. The renovated venue has gotten rave reviews for its atmosphere in the Timbers’ first season in MLS, and former Houston assistant coach John Spencer has led Portland into playoff contention. The Dynamo won the teams’ first meeting on August 14 by a 2-1 score, including a long-range goal from former Timber Adam Moffat.

NEW BLOOD Of the Dynamo’s 26 players on the roster, 14 are new to the orange in 2011. Houston acquired three players via draft (Kofi Sarkodie, Will Bruin, Evan Newton), four via trade (Colin Clark, Jason Garey, Calen Carr, Adam Moffat), five via international signings (Hunter Freeman, Jermaine Taylor, Je-Vaughn Watson, Carlo Costly, Luiz Camargo), and two via the Dynamo Academy (Alex Dixon, Josue Soto).

LOCAL FLAVOR Almost one-third of the Dynamo’s current roster has close ties to Texas. Six players are native Texans (Bobby Boswell, Tyler Deric, Alex Dixon, Hunter Freeman, Francisco Navas Cobo, Josue Soto), Colin Clark attended SMU in Dallas, and Jason Garey (Gonzales, La.) has a sister, Melissa, who was a standout player at Texas A&M University in College Station.

The Dynamo enter Saturday’s encounter coming off two straight league wins and sit just a point off the Eastern Conference lead, knowing that a win on Saturday would go a long way towards punching a postseason ticket. In the first match of the 2011 series played April 23 at Toyota Park, the Fire ran out to a 1-0 lead as Diego Chaves buried an effort just inside the box in the 18th minute. The Fire looked like they would escape with three points but Bobby Boswell headed home an 83rd minute equalizer giving each side a share of the spoils. QUICK KICKS vs. Houston Dynamo (10-9-12; 39 GF, 39 GA) FIRE vs. Houston: 1-3-2; 6 GF, 10 GA FIRE at Houston: 2-3-0; 8 GF, 9 GA

After winning their first two matches at Robertson Stadium in 2006-07, the Fire have dropped their last three away to the Dynamo.

The Fire are 6-1-2 across all competitions since falling 4-2 at Vancouver on August 7.

A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (7-8-15, 36 pts.) enter their 14th season of MLS play after posting a 9-12-9 record in 2010. Disappointed with missing out on the playoffs for just the second time in club history, the Fire have made many changes to the roster for 2011, bringing in the likes of veteran U.S. defender Cory Gibbs, Croatian Josip Mikulic , as well as Uruguayan striker Diego Chaves. The team also found a consistent goal scorer in Dominic Oduro via trade with Houston at the start of the season. In all, the Fire returned 13 players to the roster, meaning more than half the players opening the season are new to the club in 2011. 2010 MLS All-Star selection and Goal of the Year winner midfielder Marco Pappa returns for his 4th MLS season and looks to build upon his team leading seven goals in 2010. Joining Pappa in the midfielder are 2010 Fire MVP and newly named captain Logan Pause and last season’s assist leader Patrick Nyarko, while 2011 MLS Combine MVP Jalil Anibaba will patrol the backline with offseason acquisitions Gibbs and Mikulic. Marco Pappa tallied three sensational goals on the way to his first career hat trick as the Chicago Fire (7-8-15, 36 points) rolled past Real Salt Lake 3-0 in front of a record sellout crowd of 20,762 at Rio Tinto Stadium Wednesday night in Sandy, Utah. The victory, the Fire’s fifth in their last six matches gives the Fire 36 points and leaves the Men in Red three points behind the New York Red Bulls for the 10th and final MLS Cup Playoff spot with four matches to play. For the sixth time in the last eight matches the Fire found the back of the net within the first 20 minutes. Patrick Nyarko collected the ball on the left side before linking with Daniel Paladini at the top of the 18-yard-box where he found an open Pappa lurking with the space to operate. The Guatemalan international took two touches and sent a measured blast that beat Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando to give the Fire a 1-0 advantage after 10 minutes. The match turned in the Fire’s favor in the 11th minute when RSL captain Kyle Beckerman was issued his walking papers for head butting Daniel Paladini at the midfield stripe. Words were exchanged between the two sides but the end result was a red card for Beckerman and a man advantage for the Fire. Real Salt Lake had the opportunity to pull one back in the 28th when former Fire midfielder Andy Williams found Alvaro Saborio in behind the Fire defense with a looping pass. The Costa Rican international snagged the ball with his back to goal and turned a fired a whizzing shot just wide of Sean Johnson’s net. The Fire doubled their lead in the 36th minute on a fantastic bit of patience and passing from Fire midfielder Pavel Pardo. The two-time Mexican World Cup veteran ran onto a loose ball and dribbled in on goal before sending a perfectly weighted through ball to Pappa charging along the right side. The playmaking midfielder latched onto the ball in stride before slotting a low driven shot into the back of the net at the far post. Pappa would complete his magical night at the foot of the Wasatch Front in the 75th minute. The Guatemalan midfielder outmuscled Real Salt Lake defender Chris Schuler as he carried the ball along the touchline on the right side. Pappa cut inside and took the ball inside the box before curving a sensational goal around Rimando into the netting at the back post to give the Fire a commanding 3-0 lead. Sean Johnson and the Fire defense were stout throughout the match. The second-year Fire ‘keeper recorded his seventh shutout of the season and the Men in Red closed out the game to earn their second road victory of the 2011 MLS campaign. FIRE ONE OF THE HOTTEST TEAMS IN MLS With a third straight league win in Wednesday’s match at RSL, the Chicago Fire maintain their streak as the second hottest team in Major League Soccer, behind only the league-leading LA Galaxy. Having won four of their last five matches, the Fire seem to have turned things around following a 4-2 loss at Vancouver on August 7. Since then, the club has gone 6-1-2 across all competitions, pushing for the playoffs while also earning a spot in next Tuesday’s U.S. Open Cup final at Seattle. PAPPA BECOMES FIFTH FIRE PLAYER TO RECORD HAT-TRICK IN 3-0 WIN AT RSL Having not scored since June 26, Chicago Fire midfielder put the league on notice that he’s still an offensive threat, scoring all three goals in the team’s 3-0 win at Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night. With the trio, Pappa became the fifth player in Fire history to record a hat trick in an MLS game and first to do it since Chris Rolfe’s first half effort in a 5-2 win vs. New York on October 23, 2008. See below the list of Fire players that have scored hat tricks in an MLS Regular Season match PLAYER DATE RESULT GOAL MINUTES Ante Razov 5/6/00 3-0 W at MIA 49’, 56’, 72’ Ante Razov 5/19/02 3-1 W at NE 34’, 54’, 73 Damani Ralph 6/5/04 3-0 W vs. DC 15’, 55’, 69’ Nate Jaqua 6/4/05 5-2 W vs. CHV 2’, 60’, 74’ Chris Rolfe 10/23/08 5-2 W vs. NY 11’, 38’, 44’ Marco Pappa 9/28/11 3-0 W at RSL 9’, 36’ 75’ With the hat trick, Pappa bested his season high total from last year of seven. If the Guatemalan international scores two goals, he’ll join Dominic Oduro in the Fire’s 10+ club, marking the first time since 2003 that two Fire players scored double-digit goals during the regular season (Razov and Ralph had 14 and 11 respectively). 2010 YEAR IN REVIEW The Fire ushered in a new era with the hiring of former El Salvador national team boss Carlos de los Cobos ahead of the 2010 campaign. The new manager brought in a new system to the club, while welcoming in Designated Players in Mexican striker Nery Castillo and Swedish winger Freddie Ljungberg. Despite the acquisitions, de los Cobos’ side came up just short of the 2010 MLS playoffs, missing the postseason for just the second time in club history. At season’s end, two legendary players announced their retirement, with the Fire bidding goodbye to U.S. giant Brian McBride and the last remaining “Fire Original”, defender C.J. Brown who spent all 13 seasons of his MLS career in the Windy City, appearing in 371 matches for the club across all competitions.
