The Dynamo haven’t lost to D.C. United since a 1-0 defeat April 4, 2009 at RFK Stadium. The Dynamo won the next four meetings, including a 4-1 win last year at Robertson Stadium, before the clubs played to a 2-2 draw last June 25 in Washington.
The Dynamo have taken points on their last two trips to RFK Stadium. They have also won in a SuperLiga game (2008), as well as MLS Cup 2007.

United opened the scoring in the eighth minute. After stripping the ball from Thierry Henry in midfield, Chris Pontius made his way toward goal, and with a clear sight from outside the box, unleashed a powerful 25-yard shot that dipped and beat goalkeeper Ryan Meara.
United then put the game away with two goals in four minutes. In the 32nd minute, Maicon Santos worked his way down the left flank before sending in a cross that hit Meara and deflected off a defender before falling right in front of goal, where Pontius slammed it into the goal.
It was 3-0 when Dwayne De Rosario picked off another New York turnover and quickly fed Nick DeLeon in the box. The rookie fired a one-time shot that ricocheted off defender Markus Holgersson, leaving ‘keeper Meara no chance.
In the 69th minute, Pontius completed his hat trick. A long ball pumped forward from goalkeeper Joe Willis fell for Pontius, who slalomed through the center of the New York defense, skipped past Victor Palsson’s last-ditch slide tackle, and slotted the shot under Meara.
Henry finally got the Red Bulls on the board in the 72nd minute through an inch-perfect freekick.

United head coach Ben Olsen made four changes to the team that came back for a 1-1 draw with the Montréal Impact at RFK Stadium. Emiliano Dudar came into the back four for Chris Korb, and Danny Cruz and Maicon Santos came into the side for Andy Najar and Branko Boskovic.

TEAM NEWS D.C. United extended their unbeaten streak to six games in the 4-1 win against New York, their longest
undefeated run in three seasons. United had a seven-game streak from April 17-May 23, 2009. “We have to take the win with a grain of salt, but I feel like we took advantage of that, and that’s what you have
to do,” Olsen said. “Throughout the season, you’re going to have games like this where you are playing a team that’s a little down, and you got to step on them and take advantage of them.”
Chris Pontius scored the first hat trick of his professional career against New York. He had scored two goals in a game twice previously.
“I thought he had a good night,” Olsen said. “He still doesn’t know how to play forward though. And that’s a scary thing. He’s still new at the position, and some of his movements can get a lot better. But three goals aren’t too bad.”
Pontius had started the first two games of the season in a wide midfield role, then after coming off the substitutes’ bench in four consecutive matches, has started as a forward in each of the last two.
“I have always said that I just want to be on the field,” Pontius said. “The game is different. Different defenses offer different opportunities for you to get in behind. Sometimes it’s underneath, this game I had success just moving off the ball and creating space for myself and Maicon [Santos] and DeRo [Dwayne De Rosario] to run into. We were able to find each other today.”
While Maicon Santos was officially kept off the scoresheet, after scoring four goals and adding an assist over the last four games, his work helped create United’s second goal.
“He’s a big boy. He is a handful, as we all have seen so far. He put in another good day. I keep preaching to him, consistency and being a handful and being strong and keeping the ball for us,” said Olsen. “He always has times where he’s facing the goal on his left, and his left peg is a nice weapon. A little bit of an individual, just gutsy play on his part to create that goal.”
Nick DeLeon scored his third goal, the leader among rookies in MLS this season. “Last game, we had a slow start and that’s what we preached really hard for this game,” DeLeon said. We can’t afford to have that start, so we came out banging and were fortunate enough to get three goals in the first half. And from then on, it was just about trying to hold that lead and maybe sneak in a couple more.”
After starting up top against Montréal, Dwayne De Rosario shifted back into a midfield role. “Dwayne being in the midfield, he’s doing a lot for us, and we’re going to continue to score goals with him in the midfield,” Olsen said. “Dwayne doesn’t care. Of course, you always want goals and assists; we all have egos. But ultimately, you’ll see a smile on his face in there.”
United have allowed four goals in their six-game run, and have not allowed more than a goal except once this season – the 3-1 loss at the LA Galaxy.
“I thought [Emiliano] Dudar had a really good game. In particular, the way he deals with Cooper and Henry in a physical way. He had a very good game,” said Olsen. “The whole back four was solid; they were connected. We didn’t get caught in behind too many times. They defended the box very well. I was very pleased with the way they’re coming along.”
HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo played to a second consecutive draw, this time a 2-2 result with the Columbus Crew on Saturday evening at Crew Stadium. The Dynamo are tied for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 8 points from 5 games. LAST MATCH
The Dynamo woke up the match with a 58th-minute opener. From a corner kick, Will Bruin nodded home Adam Moffat’s in-swinging ball inside the back post.
The Crew tied the score four minutes later. From a long clearance, Dynamo defender Geoff Cameron pushed the ball back to goalkeeper Tally Hall, but his headed clearance went only as far as Eddie Gaven. He hit a soft shot toward goal that Dynamo fullback Andre Hainault helped further along in an effort to steer it away from the Crew’s Emilio Rentería.
In the 74th minute, Gaven doubled his tally and gave the Crew the lead. Second-half substitute Aaron Schoenfeld chested a ball down just outside the box to an onrushing Gaven, who one-timed a left-footed shot into the back of the net.
But the Dynamo pulled even nine minutes from the end. Bruin found space on the right side of the box and placed a perfect pass between Crew defenders that enabled Ching to redirect just inside the left-hand post.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made one change to the team that reached a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park. Adam Moffat came back from suspension, taking the place of Nathan Sturgis.

TEAM NEWS Through the first three games of the season, a Dynamo forward had not contributed a goal or an assist. But
after combining for the lone goal in the 1-1 draw at Chicago, Will Bruin and Brian Ching each scored in the 2-2 draw at Columbus.
“I thought Ching and Will both were battling the whole night and winning their fair share,” goalkeeper Tally Hall said. “I don’t think many can come away from a game with the Crew and say they battled as well as we did. That comes a lot from those two guys up top. Will’s goal on the corner, he was getting bear-hugged and fought right through it. For them to get two goals, they deserve it and they did it with hard work.”
But for the second time in as many matches, the Dynamo took the lead, only to see their opponents come back for an eventual share of the points.
“I thought we took our foot off the gas [after taking the lead], and that’s something I think we need to work on,” Ching said. “I think we started playing hectic and panicked. There was a loss of composure. Something we have to work on going forward is playing with the lead.”
After recording shutouts in the opening two games of the season, the Dynamo have allowed five goals in their last three games.
“We’re a team that’s been together now and when you look at the last half of last year and the beginning of this year, they don’t get rattled,” Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “We did lose our composure a little bit, especially after their first goal, and then Columbus took advantage, but the guys had enough time to get something out of the game.”
Said center back Geoff Cameron: “We’ve got to tighten up. We’ve been known to be hard to score on once we go up and we’ve got to get that mentality back. It’s just been mistakes, mental lapses, and they’ve cost us.”
With a win, the Dynamo will match the best record on an extended road trip to open an MLS season. The Columbus Crew took 11 points from their season-opening seven-game road trip to start 1999. The Dynamo have eight from the first five games of their seven-game road start.
“I've been proud of the way we've defended, not giving up goals. To give up two goals like that, it's disappointing,” said Hall. “We know we're a good defensive team, so to give up a lead is disappointing for us. At the same time, we came back 2-1 down and scored a great, late goal. Great effort, we're walking out of here with a point. I think it's probably a fair result.”

DeRo targets former teams Dwayne De Rosario likes to make his former clubs hurt, having scored nine goals against former teams in his MLS career. DeRo has scored four goals against his first MLS club, the San Jose Earthquakes, notching two separate braces with both D.C. United (7/30/11) and Toronto FC (5/9/10). With the Reds, the midfielder scored a goal against the Houston Dynamo on 7/18/09. In his first season with D.C. United, De Rosario scored against each of his former teams in the second half of last year, en route to the 2011 MLS MVP award – he tallied the match-winning goal against the Red Bulls on 7/9/11, a brace against the Earthquakes on 7/30/11 and a hat trick against Toronto FC on 8/6/11. DC to open Houston’s new stadium in two weeks Following tonight’s matchup, the first of three with the well-traveled Dynamo club, attention will be turned to San Jose for the Black-and-Red, but the two sides meet again in two weeks time, on May 12 for the inaugural match at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. DeLeon closing in on club history The club record for most League goals scored during a rookie season is five, achieved by Santino Quaranta (2001), Freddy Adu (2004) and Andy Najar (2010). D.C. United’s first-round pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, Nick DeLeon, is closing in on that record quickly – netting three through his first seven games played for the Black-and-Red. Saragosa’s return Two weeks ago while in New England, D.C. United midfielder Marcelo Saragosa left the team to join his family in Brazil to mourn his fathers death. Saragosa returned to Washington on Tuesday and trained with the team on Wednesday and will be available for selection tonight.
Defense the difference The strides United has made on defense this year have perhaps flown under the radar, but the improvements over last year are drastic. Through eight games in 2011, United had given up 19 goals. This year, that number has been drastically cut to eight. The numbers are more impressive when one considers Ben Olsen has had to use numerous combinations across the back four in the team’s eight matches. United vs Houston, historically D.C. United welcomes Houston Dynamo to the District for the teams’ first matchup of the 2012 campaign. The Dynamo hold a 3-7-2 advantage in the all-time series record, but the Black-and-Red hold a 3-2-1 home record at RFK Stadium. The clubs played each other twice in 2011: Houston won, 4-1, on April 29 at Robertson Stadium, and the teams tied, 2-2, on June 25 at RFK. DeRo as maestro Dwayne DeRosario’s teams have lost only 1 of the last 36 games where he recorded an assist (24–1–11). The streak has been running since May of 2005. DeRo is also sitting at third in the League with four assists, just one less than Henry and two less than Zusi. De Rosario’s two MLS Cups with Houston Dwayne De Rosario, a crucial member of all his MLS teams, played a significant role for the Dynamo in his time in Texas. DeRo led the expansion team to the MLS Cup in 2006, and scored the fourth and decisive penalty kick in the final versus the New England Revolution to win the title. The midfielder continued his postseason success in 2007, leading Houston to its second consecutive MLS Cup. De Rosario scored the game-winning goal in the final and was named the MLS Cup MVP for the second time in his career. Familiar faces D.C. United midfielders Dwayne De Rosario and Danny Cruz, and assistant coach Pat Onstad had successful careers with Houston Dynamo. De Ro and Onstad led the club to two consecutive MLS Cups in 2006 and 2007. Cruz began his MLS career with Houston, helping the team to the 2011 MLS Cup Finals. Cruz played major role in 2011 Dynamo playoff run D.C. United midfielder Danny Cruz began his MLS career with the Houston Dynamo in 2009 and played there until last season. He scored his first career MLS goal against D.C. United on May 22, 2010, but now the tables have turned as Cruz has played a crucial piece of Head Coach Ben Olsen’s puzzle. The 22-year-old started all four matches of the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs, including 90 minutes in the final against eventual-champion L.A. Galaxy. Pontius wins Player of the Week Midfielder/forward Chris Pontius was unanimously selected by the North American Soccer Reporters as Major League Soccer Player of the Week. Pontius is the first player in five years of voting by the North American Soccer Reporters to be a two-time unanimous selection. Pontius earns the honor after his first career hat-trick against Eastern Conference rivals, the New York Red Bulls.
De Rosario wins MLS MVP Dwayne De Rosario’s 2011 season was an usual one, to say the least. The 4-time MLS Cup winner started the season in Toronto, before being shipped to New York. After just a few weeks in New York, D.C. United acquired him for Dax McCarty. DeRo was motivated and went on to score 13 goals in 18 games for DC. He led MLS with 16 goals, to go along with 12 assists en route to winning his first League MVP award. DeRo signed a long-term deal with United during the offseason and may very well finish his career in DC. Military appreciation night Tonight’s matchup between D.C. United and the Houston Dynamo will be the 13th Annual Armed Forces & Veterans Appreciation Day. Pre-match activities will include a swearing-in ceremony of new recruits, Colors presented by a Joint Armed Forces Color Guard, and the National Anthem performed by Master Sergeant Antonio Guiliano, Senior Vocalist & National Anthem Soloist of the U.S. Army Chorus. At halftime, MSG Giuliano will return to lead the fans in “God Bless America”, following a precision drill performance by the United States Air Force Drill Team. Dykstra back on loan This week, D.C. United loaned backup goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra to USL PRO side Charleston Battery until May 20, 2012. Dykstra was previously loaned to the Battery earlier in April and posted a 1-1 record while with the club, including a shutout in 180 minutes of play. Wolff’s role as player-coach If there’s one thing that helps you stand above the rest in MLS, it’s experience, and that’s why Josh Wolff is taking on the new role of player-coach with D.C. United. An MLS and U.S. Men’s National Team veteran, Wolff’s experiences all over the world, his personality, and his skills on the pitch will make him an integral part of the team this season on the field and in the locker room. Wolff signed as a player with D.C. United on December 15, 2010. Last season, Wolff started 23 of the 30 games he appeared in and logged close to 2,000 minutes, netting five goals and assisting on seven more.
Turning the page Following a fourth straight season without making the post-season, Head Coach Ben Olsen and the technical staff made the difficult decision to part ways with several club veterans. Santino Quaranta (10 seasons in DC), Clyde Simms (seven seasons), Devon McTavish (six seasons), and Marc Burch (five seasons) are no longer with the team, which makes Chris Pontius (drafted in 2009) as the longest-tenured player on the team. Impressive history D.C. United is the most successful professional soccer team in United States history. The club has won four MLS Cups (1996, 1997, 1999, 2004), four Supporters’ Shields for putting together the best regular season record (1997, 1999, 2006, 2007), two U.S. Open Cup titles (1996, 2008) and two international trophies – the CONCACAF Champions Cup and InterAmerican Cup, both in 1998. 2011 summary Coming off the worst season in club history (6-20-4 in 2010), D.C. United made major strides in 2011. The team increased its goal output from 21 in 2010 to 49 last season. The team was in the playoff race until the final week of the season and finished with a record of 9-13-12 (39 points). Injuries to Dejan Jakovic and Chris Pontius in the same week in September saw United finish the season 1-6-2 down the stretch without both in the lineup. Ultimately, it was largely the absence of those two players that saw United miss out on the post-season for the fourth year in a row.

Brad Davis has 24 goals in all competitions with the Dynamo. With his next tally, he will become the
third Houston player to reach 25 goals (Ching, 64; Dwayne De Rosario, 32).
Run of Play: Both of the Crew’s goals on Saturday came from the run of play. Prior to that, the
Dynamo had not conceded a goal in the run of play this season. All three prior goals allowed came off
set pieces (corner kick and penalty vs. Seattle and free kick vs. Chicago).
Possession: Despite playing their first five games on the road, the Dynamo have won the possession
battle in three of five games on the season and had slim disadvantages in the others. Houston had a
53‐47% possession advantage vs. Chivas USA, a narrow disadvantage (52‐48%) at San Jose, 56%
possession vs. Seattle, 55% at Chicago and a slim 51‐49% disadvantage at Columbus.
Onside: The Dynamo have not been called offside in their last three games. In its first two games,
Houston was offside six times.
Good Form: The Dynamo are (6‐1‐4) in their last 11 regular season games. Before the loss at Seattle on
March 23, Houston’s last regular season defeat was a 2‐0 setback at Sporting Kansas City on Sept. 10,

Reserves: The Dynamo Reserves conceded their first goal of the season on and lost their first game,
1‐0, against the Chicago Fire Reserves on April 16 at Toyota Park. A seventh‐minute goal from
Uruguayan forward Federico Puppo sealed the victory for the home team. The goal was set up after
Adam Moffat’s clearance was knocked down by the outstretched arm of Puppo. With no whistle,
Puppo played on and finished past Deric to put the Fire up 1‐0. The match was played in gusting winds
of up to 40 mph. With the loss, the Dynamo Reserves fall to 3‐1‐0 on the year.
First Road Win of 2012: Houston’s 1‐0 win over Chivas USA erased bad memories of the 2011 road
schedule. It took Houston 16 games to record its first road win of the 2011 campaign. After a 0‐6‐9
start, the Dynamo defeated FC Dallas 1‐0 at Pizza Hut Park on September 24.
Well‐traveled Jamaicans: Midfielder Je‐Vaughn Watson and defender Jermaine Taylor had a chance
to settle in for the three‐week break before Chicago after plenty of time in the air. The Jamaican
internationals played three games in seven days in three different locations in March, including 3/17 at
San Jose, 3/21 vs. Costa Rica in Kingston, Jamaica and 3/23 in Seattle. The pair also played in two
friendlies for Jamaica in February while the Dynamo participated in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic in
Orlando.
Clutch: Brian Ching’s equalizer on 81 minutes at Columbus and Andre Hainault’s game‐winner two
minutes into stoppage time at Chivas USA were reminiscent of 2011 for the Dynamo. Last year,
Houston scored 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of games, second best in MLS (Seattle).
Sarkodie’s U‐23 Time: Dynamo defender Kofi Sarkodie started in two of three games for the U.S. U‐23
team in the CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying tournament. Sarkodie played 90 minutes vs. Cuba
and El Salvador.
Offseason additions: The Dynamo’s offseason consisted mostly of moves to add depth to a core of
returning starters. Houston acquired three players via draft (F‐Colin Rolfe, D‐Warren Creavalle and
M‐Brian Ownby), three via trade (D/M‐Nathan Sturgis, F‐Macoumba Kandji and F‐Brian Ching), and
two trialists signing (GK‐Erich Marscheider, D‐Oscar Recio).
With construction continuing at BBVA Compass Stadium, the Dynamo’s new downtown facility, the
club is forced to begin its season with seven games on the road. After road games with Chivas USA,
San Jose, Seattle, Chicago, Columbus, DC United and New York, Houston opens its new stadium
against DC United on May 12.
Six years after the club’s first‐ever match on April 2, 2006, only two players remain on the Dynamo
roster: Brian Ching and Brad Davis. Defender Eddie Robinson retired in January and joined the front
office as an assistant coach with the team’s Youth Academy and as a color analyst on TV broadcasts.
