A gem in the heart of Dartmouth, “The City of Lakes.” What was once King George III’s personal wood lot that provided masts for the Royal Navy has since become a 40 acre urban park. Shubie Park sits between the shores of Lake Micmac and Lake Charles and is a popular recreational retreat for local residents and visitors throughout the year. There are several trails that offer a wonderful wilderness experience for hikers including an off-leash trail for pet owners. The Fairbanks Interpretive Centre features a scale model of canal lock mechanisms and various displays for history buffs; and there is a self-guided interpretive walk along a portion of the historic Shubenacadie Canal, constructed between 1826 and 1861. Shubie Park is an important asset which is co-owned by the Halifax Regional Municipality and the Province of Nova Scotia through the Canal Commission. The Municipality developed the park primarily as a green space; an area bordering Lake Charles was established with a beach, day use picnic area and campground. Many residents and visitors enjoy the peaceful year-round retreat provided by Shubie Park’s urban forest. I encourage all residents to get outdoors and get active. Plan to visit Shubie Park today!

Used by the native Mi'kmaq for centuries, the Shubenacadie waterway was carvedout of bedrock by glaciers during the last ice age.
Construction of the Shubenacadie Canal started in 1826 to provide a safe traderoute to the Bay of Fundy. However, construction stopped in 1831 when theShubenaccadie (sic) Canal Company went bankrupt. In 1854 the InlandNavigation Company was formed and construction started on the canal once again. Construction of 9 locks and 2 inclined planes connected a chain of 7 lakes and theShubenacadie River, enabling boats to travel from Halifax Harbour to the MinasBasin.
The famous "deep cut" between Lake MicMac and Lake Charles, in what is nowShubie Park, was the single most expensive and time consuming piece of workin the entire canal. It was a cut into the bedrock over a kilometre long and atleast four feet deep. The deep cut section of the Canal includes two of the Canallocks.
The Shubenacadie Canal opened in sections and operated between 1856 and1870. Steam vessels hauled barges laden with goods along the system. The canalmoved goods needed for gold mining to Waverley which included machinery andcoal from Dartmouth. Lumber, bricks, and granite from the Grand Lake area werealso transported through the canal.
By 1870, railways were able to transport goods faster and more cheaply thanships. The canal was used in the construction of the railway and – ironically - thelow railway bridges that would ultimately prevent the passage of vessels and forceits closure in 1870.
The Shubenacadie Canal System is now a National Historic Civil Engineering site.
