E-Commerce Security Considerations
By Vihanga Halwatura
Tip 01VERIFY URLs
You must make sure that the URLs are encrypted. This means the URL on your address bar once you have accessed an E-commerce site should be HTTPS not HTTP.
It is also important to check this during Mobile commerce.
Tip 02VERIFY SITE AUTHENTICATION
First, make sure the E-commerce site has a valid, reliable ‘About us’ or a ‘contact us’ page.
Secondly, check whether they have active social media accounts and interactivity with the customers.
Tip 03THINK BEFORE YOU SHARE
Improve your shopping anonymity by providing your personal details only in the required fields. You can leave out all other details which has no asterisk.
Tip 04NETWORK YOU USE TO DO TRANSACTIONS
The network you use to do E-commerce transactions must not be by an Open WiFi or a shared WiFi.
Tip 05CREDIT CARD
Credit cards are better to do transactions that the Debit cards. This is because when you pay via credit card, the payment is coming from the credit card company and any processing errors or excess charges can be easily caught on your credit card statement, if not even sooner by the credit card company's standard fraud protection measures.
Tip 06PASSWORD
Use a strong password which has a combination of letters, numbers, symbols and longer the better.
Tip 07EMPLOYEE TRAINING
If you are concerned about a company, the employees of that company should be given proper training to secure customer data as well as to act in times of data breach according to the laws and policies of their environment.
Tip 08MONITOR SITE REGULARLY
Make sure that the site you are using works well in the real time. Make sure the hosting entity does it too. They must scan, update and backup their site regularly.
