EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
SEVERE ICING 99
ALL
INTRODUCTION ABOUT SEVERE ICING
CONDITIONS:
In severe icing conditions, the ice protection systems no longer
prevent the accumulation of ice.
The ice may accumulate on wings, propellers and cause:
• A degradation of the lift
• An increase of the drag
• A loss of engine power.
Impacts on aircraft performance and handling qualities:
• Speed decreases (aircraft may not be able to maintain ICING
BUG + 10 kt)
• Rate of climb decreases (aircraft may not be able to maintain
100 ft/min)
• Operational ceiling is reduced
• Abnormal aircraft behavior may appear (abnormal feeling
when AP disconnected, or abnormal vibrations).
The major risk in severe icing conditions is aircraft STALL.
Objectives of the procedure:
The SEVERE ICING procedure guides the flight crew in order to
avoid aircraft stall and leave icing conditions.
The procedure includes actions classified by order of priority to:
1. Increase the speed of the aircraft
2. Increase the engine power (torque)
3. Enable the detection of abnormal aircraft behavior
4. Avoid stall during maneuvers (limit the maximum bank angle
when IAS is lower than ICING BUG + 30 kt)
5. Leave the icing conditions.
The procedure also provides guidance:
6. To enable a quick reaction of the flight crew when stall is
suspected
7. For flight and approach while aircraft is not clear of ice.
Finally, the procedures indicates:
8. How to detect severe icing.

OEB n°36 (Bank Angle Limitation in Severe Icing Conditions) taken into account:
Lateral flight guidance of the FD/AP may order HI BANK turn, although the aircraft is protected at LO BANK only.
Some in-service events occurred and led to a loss of control in the conditions detailed below:
- Severe icing conditions
- DEGRADED PERF alert triggered
- IAS at or below VmLB0 icing + 10 kt
- AP engaged in HDG SEL (HI BANK) or LNAV.
To avoid this undesired behavior, the minimum maneuver speeds in HI BANK and LO BANK are increased:

INTRODUCTION
ALL
CRUISE SPEED LOW kept as a separate procedure (Initiated when the CRUISE SPEED LOW alert is on)
All icing procedures are merged into one single procedure
In icing conditions, the probability of ice accretion is high, and the flight
crew needs to anticipate ice accretion and its possible adverse effects

PROCEDURE FOR OPERATION IN ATMOSPHERIC ICING CONDITIONS
ALL
Action changed into a lasting
limitation for clarification, and
moved to the first position
(Speed monitoring and
awareness is the highest priority
in order to avoid stall)
Action replaced by a phase
with an associated lasting
limitation, and a lasting action
(In the case of ice accretion, the
speed must be increased by 10 kt
in FLAPS 0 configuration in order
to counteract the effect of the ice.
Monitoring the speed and vertical
speed enables the detection of
severe icing )
Note:
The action DE-ICING systems…ON is before the actions to monitor speed
because speed monitoring is already in progress (first action of the procedure).
