e are all gripped by a bout of feverish excitement as the curtain finally

goes up on THE MEJIA MIRROR  –   a monthly E-magazine exclusively of

MTPS, solely by the members of MTPS but hopefully, not only for MTPS. It is a

tiny step in a relatively uncharted territory, taken with a few trepidations in mind

but many an expectation in heart. We know everything may not fall in place right

from VOL:I, but we are ready to learn the ropes as we move along & we would

lend a receptive ear to anyone & everyone with a say on the magazine, right from

our staunchest critic to our strongest supporter.

But what does a magazine actually signify? Well, a bit of ‘Google’ing on its etymology reveals that the word

is derived from the Arabic ‘ makhzin’  (plural of ‘ makhzan’  meaning storehouse) which in turn has its roots in

another Arabic word ‘ khazana’, whose meaning we are all familiar with. So it seems that a magazine can be

literally & figuratively embodied as a treasure trove of information. Now, we all have our own precious, little boxes full of nuggets of wisdom & knowledge, tips & tricks, ‘info’s & ‘funda’s which we pick up on the way

through the journey called LIFE. How wonderful it would be, if we lend & share & borrow from each other’s

boxes to build up a storehouse, a magazine –  a collective effort to not only proudly exhibit to the outside

world but also to open up a few creaky windows of our minds, hold a mirror before ourselves & introspect on

the reflection. Hence the name of our magazine & as the tagline suggests we would strive to be ‘ thoda hatke’ ,

both in our perspective & our approach. We intend to be informative without being preachy, inclusive

without being nosey & entertaining without being crass. For that, we need the help & support of each &

every member of the MTPS family to whom we fervently appeal to be prolific in their contributions &

scathing in their criticism. Else it won’t take much time for this sapling to wither out. Please do remember

this is neither yours nor theirs. This IS & has to be OURS. So let’s nurture it likewise. Thank you.

The passage of days in our lives is, in a way, similar to a journey by a night train where the world outside the window zooms past in the darkness – mostly unnoticed. Going through the grind mill of everyday responsibilities, we find ourselvesturning into recluses, confined to the narrow boundaries of office and home. The television and the internet keep us up-to- date with news from around the world, but many of us would be stumped when asked about the events in our immediate neighborhood. This section is an attempt to make us realize that so much is actually happening right outside our windows.

The best thing about the Vishwakarma Puja was that it

attracted a sizeable audience from among the family

members of our employees, who otherwise seldom get a

chance to be acquainted with the enormous affection and

emotional involvement the DVC family displays for

    everything related to the organization.

While everyone associated with the Puja enjoyed his own

way, be it through decorations, lighting, creative inputs,

financial management or delicious Prasad distribution,

each Puja Pandal was graced by the the presence of our

Hon’ble  Chief Engineer & Project Head, Sr. D.

Choudhury, Chief Engineer (O&M), Sri. C.S. Tripathi,

Chief Engineer (Common Services), Sri. G.K.Chanda,

Chief Engineer (R&D), Sri. D. Biswas, and a number of

higher officials. All considered, this Vishwakarma Puja

has been an event to fondly remember in terms of

    innovative approaches and unending enthusiasm.

The occasion of Sri Sri Vishwakarma Puja on 18.09.15

has yet again inspired the best of creativity in Mejia

Thermal Power Station to surpass past standards by

considerable distance so much so that we had more thanseventy opulent Pujas around the station!

This year, MTPS has revelled in ‘Theme  Pujas’

conceived with utmost care for details and accuracy, the

most noteworthy being CHP # 1-4 employees’  Puja

replete with an unbelievably realistic model of stacker

cum reclaimer, while CHP # 5-6 displayed a whole coal

rake on its way, chugging along accompanied by engine

whistles and sirens. Praiseworthy efforts were displayed

by CHP # 1-4 Electrical Contractors, who designed their

Pandal nestled amid an uncanny reproduction of old ruins

housing an ancient banyan tree and a real beehive!

Technical Section, MTPS, meanwhile opted to go in for a

mellower version of a tragic dummy who sat with his

head in his hands, as he struggled to devise plans to put

up with the rapidly changing technological and technical

    sides of his job areas.

An awareness program on AIDS was arranged on 16.09.15 at

MTPS Hospital where an Integrated Testing & Counselling

Centre (ICTC) - a joint collaboration of DVC & WB State govt.

was inaugurated by our Hon’ble  Member(Secretary), Shri

P.K.Mukhopadhyay in presence of Jt. Director of State Health

Sevices, Dr. D.Goswami. Shri Mukhopadhyay in his address

cautioned against this disease reaching epidemic proportions

across the industrial belts among the low income populace. The

ICTC has been planned to counter this trend where anyone can

have free & discreet counselling & testing regarding HIV/AIDS.

The occasion was also graced by Shri A.Ghosh, Addl Secretary,

Shri Prabhat Kiran, CE & I/C (HR) & our Chief Engineers.

    9

The program was attended by a large number of personnel from

various organisations as well as CISF jawans. Dr. A.K.Agrawal,

DHS, DVC elaborated on the guidelines of the NACC(National

AIDS Control Council) which would be followed in the ICTC.

Dr. (Smt) Kajari Bose, MS & Dr. S.Kundu, MO I/C, MTPS

placed their views on the topic illuminating on the probable

causes & cure of AIDS which as per WHO remains one of the

world's most significant public health challenges.

As per statistics published by WHO, globally, an estimated 36.9

million people were living with HIV in 2014, and 2.6 million of

    these were children.

Subsequent to the conclusion of the programme, Hon’ble

Member(Secretary) visited the power plant & held discussions

with the Chief Engineers & sectional heads at Conference Hall.

    Our Hon’ble Member(Secretary) Mr. R.P.Tripathi visited MTPS

    on 08.10.15 along with CE(OS&U) Mr.D.Kar & other members

of the OS&U team, to instruct us on the roadmap to be followed

for ‘PRAGATI’  –  a blueprint for performance improvement that

was launched on 27th August at DVC HQ, Kolkata. He went foran inspection of the CHP & U#7,8 after which he met the

members of the MTPS ‘PRAGATI’  (Performance R enewal

Actions through Gap Analysis, Technical Audit & Improvement

plans) committee at the conference hall in the presence of our

Chief Engineers. He stressed on the practice of knowledge

sharing & preparation of work practices to be uploaded in the

EBA system in the near future where a user can have the

detailed information regarding spares, tools, manpower & cost

    10

involved for a specific job. He also advised on tapping the

experience & knowhow of the senior members citing the

example of ‘guru-shishya parampara’ . He lauded the formationof “such a well represented team” & pointed out the pivotal role

to be played by the IT cell in the entire process.

Later Mr. Samir Haq Khan, DCE(OS&U) who is acting as the

Chief Co-ordinator, PRAGATI, separately fielded queries from

the committee members mainly regarding codification, duplicity

of codes & preparation of work practice templates for

preventive, overhauling & repair jobs. The need to strengthenthe MP Cell & Condition Monitoring Cell of MTPS for proper

& successful implementation of PRAGATI & benchmark

maintenance practices at our power plant also came up in the

    course of discussion.

I was trying to concentrate, to empty my mind of all thoughts

and focus solely on the sounds of the jungle. I was hoping to

pick up alarm calls –  of deer, langoor, peacock or jungle fowl  –

warnings about the presence of the tiger we had crossed half the

country to see. But for a novice like me, it was a task easier said

than done. The arrival of the safari Gypsies at almost regular

intervals kept cutting into my concentration and the voices of

the new visitors and the banging of the Gypsy doors were of no

    help either.

It was a quarter to three in the afternoon of 15.02.2015. We were

standing in front of the watch tower at zero point, the only place

in the Bijrani zone of Corbett Tiger Reserve where visitors out

on safari are allowed to disembark from their vehicles. In front

and slightly below us lay the dry bed of the Reethapani sot, a

seasonal stream now mostly covered with tall grass. Tiring of

the futile efforts to concentrate, my thoughts had started to drift

when, suddenly, I was jolted back to attention by someone

whispering over my shoulder “Saab, jaldi chalo, cheetal bol

    raha hai”.

It was Arief, our driver-cum-guide. In order to be able to listen

more closely to what the jungle had to say, Arief had wandered

off a few metres from the gathering at the foot of the watch

tower to a relatively quieter spot. All this while, none of us,

including the drivers and guides of the other Gypsies, had heard

RENDEZVOUS WITH CHARAMMA:anything worthwhile. But Arief, with his keen sense of hearing,

had picked up the alarm call of a spotted deer. The watch tower

is located in the hilly terrain on the right bank of the Reethapani

sot and the alarm call had come from the left bank, further

    upstream from where we stood.

Time was at a premium and we needed to leave for the opposite

bank immediately if we were to have any chance of sighting at

all. Arief started our Gypsy as soon as I had helped my mother

climb into her seat. Not wanting a procession of other vehicles

to follow us and scare the tiger away, we slipped away from zero

point as quietly as possible. I had procured my first DSLR

camera along with a pair of lenses a few months back in

preparation for this trip. The camera, with the 70-300mm lens

attached, was now clasped ready in my hands and, as we sped

    17

  • 8/20/2019 e Mag Mejia Mirror First Issue Oct 15

    19/29

towards the Reethapani sot, I could feel a slight tremble in my

fingers. For the first time in my life I was going after a tiger!

As part of routine post-monsoon activity every year, the forest

department prepares motorable tracks across the bed of the

Reethapani sot at intervals along its course by clearing away

grass, rocks and gravel and filling in fresh soil where required.

We took one such track to cross the sot and, upon reaching the

other side, turned left to follow another track that ran along the

left bank of the sot. There were pugmarks of a tigress on this

track, but these marks were not recent as we had noticed them

earlier while passing this way en route to the watch tower. Arief

had informed us that the marks had been made by Charamma,

the resident tigress of this region. The name Charamma literally

translates to ‘mother  of four’. The cubs of Charamma were now

almost fully grown. In another three or four months, they were

expected to disperse and stake out their own territories. We had

read about Charamma and her four cubs and had deliberately

chosen to visit Corbett while the cubs were still with their

mother. Having five tigers in the same region greatly increased

    the chances of sighting.

I was, therefore, fairly surprised when Arief suddenly stopped

the Gypsy and pointed excitedly towards what appeared to be

part of the same set of pugmarks. On questioning, my

misconception was promptly, though somewhat impatiently,

removed. In this set of marks, the tigress was moving upstream

like us, the exact opposite of the direction she was travelling in

case of the earlier set of marks. Clearly, these marks were fresh

and the alarm call picked up by Arief had, in all probability,

been set off while these marks were being made. We were on the

    right course!

We hurried after the marks sensing that the course of events

were drawing to a climax and expecting to see the tigress at

every bend. The marks were continuous and clearly visible in

most parts, missing only in the places where the tigress hadwalked on grass or stone. However, after a while, the marks

suddenly vanished. We continued further up the sot thinking that

the tigress had meandered from her course temporarily and

would return to thetrack soon. But inspite of searching for a

    18

considerable distance, we could not trace any more marks.

Even Arief seemed perplexed. He backed up the Gypsy to the

spot where the pugmarks were last seen and switched off the

engine. He was trying to deduce what had happened. We could

hear him murmuring to himself, weighing the different

possibilities. In less than a minute, he had reached a conclusion

and the Gypsy growled back to life.

Continuing on our course upstream, Arief explained that the

cubs of Charamma were currently hiding somewhere in the low

hills on the opposite bank of the sot. Charamma had been out

patrolling her territory and, on the completion of her rounds, was

likely to return to her cubs. The sudden disappearance of her

pugmarks could be easily explained if it was assumed that she

had left the motorable track and entered the sot to cross over to

her cubs on the other side. If we drove really hard, chances were

that we might intercept her on the right bank.

A little further upstream, there was another motorable track for

crossing the sot. Keeping the accelerator pressed all the way,

Arief swung the Gypsy onto this track. The sense of urgency

was now turning to desperation and the sot was suddenly

appearing broader  –   its opposite shore receding further awayinstead of coming any closer.

After what seemed like an eternity the Gypsy finally clambered

up from the bed of the sot to another track which bore the name

‘ Naya Job’. We had hardly moved 200 feet along it when, ahead

of us on the track, we saw a group of spotted deer. The deer

were on full alert and were looking in the direction of the sot.

Clearly, they had sensed the presence of a tiger! Arief stopped

the Gypsy to observe the deer and the ensuing silence was

broken only by the ‘thump, thump, thump’ of our heartbeats.

Suddenly, all hell seemed to break loose. The deer were literally

flying in all directions, filling the air with their alarm calls. My

camera nearly bounced out of my hands as I tried to photograph

the fleeing deer and I realized that our Gypsy was hurtling

forward at a pace even faster than that of the deer. “Tiger nikal

raha hai” was the brief announcement from Arief.

I am omnipresent...So what if my mortal eyes could not behold the

wonders of the seven continents, the mighty land or the vast oceans?

Here I am, flying at lightning speed with a bolt of thunder this moment,

and in the next, I am graciously diving in and out of the Coral garland in

the tranquil Pacific blues, singing some obscure forgotten long lost

melody, with a school of dolphins...

I stand awestruck by the splendour of the Aurora Borealis in the northern

skies wondering about the fact that, it seemed just yesterday, when I bore

witness to the marching parade of a community of penguins in a wintry

blizzard ridden polar night under unforgiving heavens streaked with the

    Aurora Australis.

I stand mesmerized by the triumphant victory call of the celebrating

Masai, who have returned with a bounty of Wilde Beast, but my heart

strains to remember the memories graciously steeped in the many

flavours of the colourful Caribbean islands... I face the dilemma of

deciding which of the svelte dusky beauties stand out in my dreams,

beckoning me to join them in their celebration of life.

I saw Florence ridden with the pestilence of Black Death, I shudder atthe overbearing stench, which still assails my senses; but, I also

remember the vicious relentless whip lashes on my blood-stained back,

while working under the watchful eyes of Cuban plantation owners. I

remember regaling with peasants, dancing to the success of demolishing

the Bastille, but, strangely, I also feel the cold pulsating fear gripping me

as they marched me to the Guillotine.

I remember how Alexander the Great travelled to Delphi to ask me if

he was invincible, while, the strings of memory nag at my heart to

recollect the horror mankind witnessed after the ground shuddered

with the impact of the 'Little Boy' at Hiroshima. I remember how I

suffered there, all the while enjoying and congratulating my fellow

country-men in America. I remember abandoning all riches andwalking the paths of Kapilavastu in the wake of Prince Siddhartha,

and also having rejoiced alongside Saladin in Hattin.

I know how it felt to be imprisoned by my own son, to stare longingly

at the beauty of the moonlit Taj from behind bars, all the while

knowing the swooping liberation I felt as Apartheid was crushed by

the collective efforts of humanity in Africa. I remember being born as

wailing infants, who came to be known as Leonardo Da Vinci, Adolf

Hitler, Mohandas Gandhi or Joan of Arc, while dying as an eighteen

year old in the wet jungles of Laos, in the arms of my mates.

Believe me or not, I was there since time eternal and shall never cease

to exist... I was crying with joy at the beginning of universe, was

feeling exhilarant at the big bang and shall cry again, not out of

despair when darkness falls again, but with the lightness that engulfs a

free quantum of energy called the ‘soul’; when it feels that it has

broken free of all restrain that binds it till it derives the free will of true

glory on having completed the cycle of time and space...

     यक …

    BOSS भी कभी ..

I   joined DVC on 20th  Nov’84 as G.E.T. After getting through the

orientation program for familiarization with different Stations of

DVC, I was finally posted at BTPS A plant in Jan’85 for on- job

training. However, within a couple of months I was transferred to

BTPS-B plant where Unit#1 (210MW) was being commissioned.

At that time Sri A.K.Dasgupta, DCE(M) was in charge of

commissioning. Besides being a very good engineer, Dasgupta Sir

was a very simple-hearted & noble person. He advised we traineesto see all the equipments & different pipelines in detail. However as

we had joined directly from college, we used to ignore his

suggestions & were more interested in gaining bookish knowledge

by sitting inside the control room. Dasgupta Sir, ever punctual,

daily came to the control room sharp at 8 o’clock   in the morning.

After explaining the functioning of a particular equipment he would

instruct us to go to the field & see the system physically. One day Iasked him for the O&M manual with a view in my mind that once I

get my hand to it, I would get all the relevant data about the various

systems & equipments & thus those field surveys in the annoying

heat & dust won’t be no longer necessary. But to my utter dismay he

flatly turned down my request saying in spite of devouring plenty of

books in our college days we are yet to attain the level to read a

power plant manual, as we are devoid of any practical knowledge

which is far more important than any theory in running a plant.

And that knowledge can only be achieved if we visit each &

every equipment, see the system with our own eyes, analyze them

in our minds & get our confusions cleared by talking to the

people working there. Then & only then we would be entitled to

go through the O&M manual. Today when I enter our modern,

sophisticated control rooms & see the newly joined engineers

stuck to their workstations, seemingly oblivious to what actually

happens with that one click of the mouse, I remember those

words of wisdom of Dasgupta Sir, which are so very true even

after thirty long years. As one of my seniors, Mr.S.K.Chatterjee

once said to me way back that one must be able to haveconversation with the equipment which will then reveal so much

to us about itself. In these days of Condition Monitoring we

deploy machines who can do just that for us but out of old habits

we still touch the body of a running pump or motor, strain our

ears to hear something…who knows maybe if we put our heart to

it we can really feel its pulse..maybe it will tell us its little secrets

in hushed whispers. It is rightly said “ य :  याान स : पडत :”  – one who practicesthe knowledge is the real pandit or scholar .
